Chapter 8
Kara walked into CatCo. – it was late so it wasn't surprising to see Cat Grant still at her desk. Though Kara wondered how much of that was habit or how much it was keeping up appearances. After all, Enigma couldn't let on that her newest "recruit" do something out of character.
"I figured you'd still be here," the blonde broke the silence of the usually busy space. The words made Cat look up.
"Shouldn't you be out chasing down Supergirl?" Her boss wondered.
"I called her," 'Supergirl' said. Kara had swung by earlier and unlocked the balcony door. Cat bolted out of her chair at the sight of the hero.
"Why would you do that?" Cat wanted to know.
"Well, the way I hear it, you want to know all there is to know about Enigma and why my friends and I haven't caught her yet. Seems maybe a little too interested," the fake 'Supergirl' poked. Kara was trying to keep her smile in. M'gann was doing an excellent job playing her role as the Kryptonian hero.
"What do you mean? Has Kara been talking to you?" Cat gave the blonde a look. It was one of the first times that the woman had gotten the reporter's name right.
"You think she's the only person I talk to in all of National City? I've got eyes and ears everywhere," M'gann smirked.
"It's been one of the biggest news stories – the one who got away – why wouldn't we be interested?" Cat threw that back at her.
"Interested sure but I don't think trying to berate your Pulitzer prize winner and have her try to wrangle me into your cause. See I think there's something going on here. Something that is not quite right," M'gann said. Cat suddenly looked nervously toward Kara, realizing that she had no exit.
"There's nowhere to run Miss Grant," Kara spoke up.
"You can't keep me here," Cat said.
"Well, we don't intend to. We were just wasting time," M'gann chuckled. Cat looked confused – until she saw a mass of ARGUS agents coming up behind Kara.
"I haven't done anything wrong," Cat told them.
"No, but you've been influenced shall we say? These agents here are going to clean you up but first, you're going to help us with something," M'gann said.
"With what?" The older woman gave them a look.
"You know where Enigma is and you're going to tell these nice people," Kara told her. Cat looked at her and at M'gann, as if looking for a way out, one she knew wasn't there. A look of panic, something that Kara had never seen on her face. Now that she could see it, the blonde knew that her boss was in there, trying to get out but couldn't.
"Papa Bear, we're going to need you in here," the voice behind Kara was Nia's. The ARGUS agents began filling the room and Cat just stood there, knowing there was no way out, but suddenly there was a furtive look back towards her desk – as if something there would save her – or something else. M'gann had seen it too and quickly tackled Cat before she could go for the desk. The agents handcuffed the affected woman and Nia, in her Dreamer attire, went to the desk.
"There's nothing here," she said as she opened the drawers and looked around.
"The glass on top," Kara told her. Nia's eyes went wide and she intuitively knew what her friend meant – broken glass was a weapon and it wasn't meant to be used on anyone else in the room but the person wielding it.
"Take everything from the desk – just in case," M'gann told the agents. Quickly, everything was collected and the whole lot left the building.
