CHAPTER 1: CAUGHT BETWEEN TWO WORLDS
Five long years have passed since the defeat of the Trade Federation and the liberation of Naboo, a period that marked a significant change in the galaxy. With the appointment of Chancellor Palpatine, new hopes were sown, but the shadow of tragedy also lingers: the death of Qui-Gon Jinn at the hands of the fearsome Darth Maul, an event that left deep scars on the Jedi Order.
During this time, Obi-Wan Kenobi has fulfilled his promise to train Anakin Skywalker, who has become a Padawan full of potential and challenges, increasingly ready to forge his own path in an ever more uncertain universe.
Though no one in the Jedi Order knows it, young Anakin still clings to his ties with his loved ones. Despite his master Obi-Wan's constant advice about the importance of letting go of attachments, Anakin maintains an unbreakable bond with his mother and with the Queen of Naboo, Padmé Amidala. Since he met her at the age of nine, her image has been deeply etched in his heart, and as the padawan grows, so does his love for her—a feeling that challenges the teachings of the Order but also gives him strength and motivation in his journey as a Jedi.
Obi-Wan's ship travels through deep space, the interior warm and welcoming, but the atmosphere between the Jedi master and his padawan is tense.
Obi-Wan sits in one of the seats, reviewing the mission reports. Anakin, seated at the pilot's seat, gazes out the window, lost in thought. The starry landscape unfolds before them as the ship speeds toward home.
Obi-Wan looks at Anakin seriously.
"Anakin, your performance on Celanon was... questionable in some aspects."
Anakin turns his head toward his master, irritation and defensiveness mixing in his expression. His tone becomes quick and defensive.
"I did what was necessary, Master. The objective was achieved. We managed to dismantle the smuggling operation."
"Yes, we did. But your impulses often lead you to act without thinking. If you had followed the plan, we could have avoided that unnecessary confrontation with the pirates."
Anakin crosses his arms, frustrated. He feels his abilities are not recognized as they should be.
"Sometimes strategy is not enough. We must act quickly, or the results can be disastrous. I can't always wait for others to make decisions."
Obi-Wan tries to stay calm; the tension between them increases, but he also knows Anakin has a strong sense of justice and responsibility.
"I understand your point, but balance is crucial in our actions. You cannot let impulsiveness cloud your judgment. Every action has consequences, and sometimes the price to pay is very high."
Anakin looks down, knowing his master is right, but he can't help feeling misunderstood.
"I didn't want anything to go wrong, Master. I just wanted to ensure we succeeded."
The master knows his padawan well enough to recognize the internal struggle within him, so he softens his tone
"I know, Anakin. Your passion and dedication are admirable, and I'm sure those virtues will lead you to become a great Jedi. But there are times when we must be patient and trust the process."
Anakin nods, still upset but receptive. The conversation feels like a repeated cycle, but his master always tries to guide him on the right path.
"Despite everything, I must acknowledge that the mission was a success. We managed to neutralize a significant threat to the Republic. That's what matters in the end."
The mention of success eases the tension. Anakin, relaxing a bit, smiles with satisfaction.
"And don't forget the part where we made those pirates look ridiculous. They didn't know what to do when I hacked their defense system and activated alarms at all their bases."
Obi-Wan nods, chuckling softly.
"I can't deny that watching those pirates running around, clueless about what was happening, was quite entertaining. Especially when they started shooting at their own turrets thinking we were attacking them from the air."
"That was the best! I didn't think they would be so clumsy... though I admit, it wasn't easy to divert their communications signal and make them believe the Republic fleet was upon them."
Obi-Wan looks at his padawan with a touch of pride.
"An ingenious tactic, Anakin. Though your penchant for theatrics always seems to come to the fore."
Anakin shrugs with a wider smile.
"What can I say? If we can do our job and humiliate them a little, even better. Did you see the look on their leader's face when he thought he was being betrayed? I've never seen someone so confused!"
"Yes, it looked like he was going to pounce on his own men. I think it was right after we sent that false transmission saying the Republic had offered a reward for turning them in."
"It was a work of art, Master. Sometimes a little fun is what makes these missions memorable."
Obi-Wan says with a warm smile, but reminding him of his duties as a Jedi.
"Fun or not, the important thing is that we resolved the situation without causing more damage than necessary. And if, in the process, those pirates learned a lesson in humility, even better."
"Definitely, although I doubt they'll want to cross paths with us again after that."
"Let's hope not. Otherwise, we may not have as many opportunities to enjoy ourselves next time."
After a silence, Anakin finally speaks.
"Thank you, Master. I'll do my best to improve and not act impulsively on the next mission. I always want our missions to be successful."
"And you will, Anakin. Just remember that every success is also an opportunity to learn."
Anakin nods, feeling that despite his master's criticisms, he is by his side.
The ship approaches Coruscant, and both Jedi prepare to land. The ship lands smoothly on the Jedi Temple's landing platform. Master and apprentice unbuckle their seatbelts and prepare to exit.
"Do you know, Anakin? The time for your Jedi oaths will come soon. It's not long now. It's a great responsibility, something that will define your life in the Order."
The padawan looks ahead, nodding, but with a barely visible expression of worry on his face.
"I know, Master. It's just that… sometimes I feel like I'm not ready."
The Jedi master, with a faint smile, gives him a pat on the shoulder.
"No one feels completely ready, Anakin. Not even I did when it was my turn. But oaths are not just a test of your skills or knowledge. They are a reflection of your commitment to the Force, to the Jedi Order, and to what we defend."
"It's just that... sometimes I feel there's so much on my mind. The training, the missions, the responsibilities... it's hard to focus."
"It's natural, Anakin. But a fundamental part of the oaths is learning to let go of what distracts you. We Jedi must free ourselves from attachments to find balance and clarity. That's what the Force asks of us."
"What if I can't? What if... I'm not made for this?"
Obi-Wan studies him for a moment, realizing that the topic is deeper than it seems.
"Anakin, I've watched you grow since you were a child. I know what you're capable of. Your connection to the Force is unique, powerful. But being a Jedi is not just about power or skills; it's also about discipline and self-control. I know there are internal challenges you battle with, but you have the ability to overcome them."
The boy, with a touch of frustration in his voice, responds.
"It's just… it's not as simple as saying it. Sometimes I feel there's so much more... outside the Order, things I can't ignore."
Obi-Wan watches him more closely, knowing what he means but not addressing it directly.
"I know it may seem difficult. But that's what it means to be a Jedi. Finding balance amid chaos. And the oaths will help you define that path. It's a promise not only to the Order but to yourself, Anakin. The day you take your oaths will be the moment you accept your place in this legacy."
The padawan looks at his master with a mix of insecurity and determination.
"But what if... I'm not capable of fulfilling them? What if at some point... I break one?"
"Breaking oaths is a possibility for anyone, Anakin. We are not perfect, but it's our responsibility to try. You're not expected to be infallible; you're expected to be true to your principles. And when you stumble, what's important is to get back up and keep going. That's the true strength of a Jedi."
The boy remains silent for a few moments, contemplating his master's words. In the end, he nods.
"I suppose you're right, Master. I just hope to live up to it."
Obi-Wan smiles, patting him on the shoulder again as they begin to walk toward the Temple hangar.
"You will, Anakin. You will. And when the time comes, I'll be there, just as Qui-Gon was for me. I trust you, Anakin. You just need to trust yourself."
The padawan responds with a small smile.
"Thank you, Master. I'll try to focus more on what I need to do."
"That's all I ask of you. A Jedi doesn't let his fears dominate him. And you, Anakin, are stronger than you think."
His apprentice nods with pride and gratitude, but his expression still reveals a mix of emotion and nervousness.
As they walk through the Temple corridors, the sound of their footsteps echoes in the grand hall. The walls are adorned with holoprojectors displaying images of Jedi in action. Anakin observes, feeling the history of the Order surrounding him.
Master Luminara approaches them and informs them.
"Master Kenobi, Chancellor Palpatine is requesting an immediate report on your mission to Celanon."
Obi-Wan frowns, clearly uncomfortable. He has never been fond of dealing with politicians. While he understands the importance of this matter to the Republic, he isn't exactly in the mood to discuss sensitive Jedi Order issues with outsiders, especially after an exhausting mission.
His padawan watches him silently, waiting for his master's instructions on what to do next, whether to accompany him to deliver the report or stay at the Jedi Temple. The tension in the air is palpable as Obi-Wan contemplates.
Then, suddenly, a brilliant idea crosses Obi-Wan's mind. A quick way to get rid of this awkward task and free up some time. He turns to Anakin with a slight smile, almost pleased with his plan.
"Anakin, I have a task for you. I believe it would be more than appropriate for you to give the report directly to the Chancellor while I handle the one for the Jedi Council. That way, we can take care of these matters more quickly."
Anakin, surprised, blinks and nods. Although he usually prefers action over diplomacy, he knows this is an opportunity to show initiative and responsibility.
"As you wish, Master. I'll take care of it."
His master gives him one last look, as if reminding him to remain composed in front of Chancellor Palpatine.
"Remember, Anakin, diplomacy first. Be cordial, but don't reveal more than necessary. Politicians are always looking for something beyond what they're told."
"Don't worry, Master. I'll handle it with the utmost care. Thank you for trusting me."
The young man takes a speeder from the hangar and immediately heads to the Senate, where he'll meet his good friend, Chancellor Palpatine.
Upon arrival, the padawan is greeted with a warm smile by Palpatine, who is seated in his luxurious office.
Palpatine's spokesman, fully aware of the deeper plans the Chancellor has for the young Anakin, gives a slight nod before withdrawing. With a discreet gesture, he ensures not to draw too much attention while leaving the room, leaving the two of them in complete privacy.
"Ah, young Skywalker. It's a pleasure to see you. I've heard about your success on Celanon. I'm eager to hear the full report."
"That's exactly why I've come, Chancellor. The mission was a success. We dismantled the smuggling operation and secured temporary peace in the system."
Palpatine listens attentively, his gaze always fixed on the young Jedi's face.
"Excellent, Anakin. It's admirable that at such a young age, you're already achieving such feats. There's no doubt the Republic needs brave Jedi like you."
The young padawan feels a spark of pride, but also a slight pressure in the air. He tries to keep the conversation at a professional level.
"All the credit belongs to my master, Obi-Wan. His strategy was crucial to the mission's success."
"Undoubtedly, Obi-Wan is a great Jedi. But I believe your potential goes far beyond that, Anakin. Everyone at the Temple must be very proud of your performance. It's only a matter of time before you shine on your own."
Anakin felt deeply flattered, but at the same time, a shadow crossed his mind. He knew that not everyone in the Order fully trusted him. Some looked at him with suspicion, waiting for the moment when he would fail, the instant he would become the danger many had feared since his arrival. That thought troubled him, filling him with a sadness he couldn't share with anyone.
But, almost instinctively, his thoughts sought refuge in what truly mattered to him. First, his mother, Shmi. He visualized her face, imagining how proud she would feel seeing him become a Jedi when the Force reunited them. That thought brought him comfort.
Then, his mind flew to the other person who occupied his heart: the beautiful Padmé, the Queen of Naboo. In his imagination, he could see her smiling at him, telling him again and again how proud she was of him, of his growth and bravery. Visualizing Padmé filled him with hope, a hope that anchored him to his will to become stronger and better. Even though his feelings were a secret, in those moments, he clung to the idea that she would always believe in him.
"I've heard great things about your performance in all your recent missions, Anakin. Your skill with the Force, your prowess in combat... Few young people have such potential. You must feel proud of what you've achieved so far."
"Thank you, Chancellor. I do my best, but I still have much to learn. My master, Obi-Wan, is the one who deserves the credit. Without him, I wouldn't have made it this far."
"Don't underestimate what you've accomplished on your own. Your determination, your spirit... These are unique qualities. Not everyone has that combination of strength and conviction."
"I try not to think about it too much, I just try to move forward and fulfill my duties. There are too many expectations placed on me, and sometimes... it's hard not to feel the pressure."
"It's natural, Anakin. Expectations can be a heavy burden. But remember, sometimes it's precisely those pressures that forge the greatest among us. Those around you see something special in you, and not without reason."
The young man nods, though internally he struggles with the mixture of flattery and the constant sensation of being watched, of being judged by those who fear what he might become.
"Politics can be complicated, young Skywalker. Often, the Jedi must act in the interest of the Republic. How do you feel about that?"
The young Padawan feels caught by the question, reflecting on his own experiences and emotions.
"It's difficult. Sometimes I feel like there's more at stake than what meets the eye. I want to protect people, but... there are moments when the decisions are complicated."
Palpatine watches the young man with interest, his gaze almost paternal.
"That is what makes you a good Jedi, Anakin. Your empathy and understanding of others' suffering are essential."
The young man feels noticeably relieved after his conversation with his good friend, someone who doesn't judge him for his emotions and genuinely cares for his growth and well-being. It's a refuge amid the internal storm he's facing.
As the Chancellor absentmindedly flips through his papers, appearing to search for something trivial, like a sheet meant for recycling, he is actually aware that what he's looking for has a far darker purpose. Every page he displaces brings him closer to a lesson of suffering and anguish he plans to teach Anakin, a lesson that could be the spark that pushes him towards the dark side. Palpatine's serene smile contrasts with the storm lurking in the depths of his mind, where his hidden intentions wait to be revealed.
Finally, the Chancellor finds what he's searching for, lifts his gaze, and smiles.
"Ah, young Skywalker, you cannot imagine how often I'm invited to high-society celebrations. For instance, here I have an invitation that recently arrived."
Palpatine holds an elegant envelope, the gold ink shining in the room's light. The young man looks at the envelope, not understanding its importance.
"Whose invitation is that, Chancellor?"
Palpatine opens the envelope slowly, savoring the moment.
"Ah, it's from a young and beautiful queen from a planet you and I know quite well. She's marrying a noble from her world, a wonderful piece of news."
Anakin feels a knot in his stomach. The only queen he can think of at that moment is Padmé Amidala.
As the dialogue with Palpatine unfolds, Anakin feels more and more distant, as if he's watching everything from an outside perspective. The Chancellor's words become a distant echo, and his mind dives into visions of Padmé, smiling and radiating happiness alongside another man.
The thought that she might be about to marry someone else causes a sharp pain in his chest, as if it pierced his very soul.
The knot in his stomach tightens. Every sentence from Palpatine feels like another needle stabbing him, reminding him of his own helplessness. Doubts about his worth and his place in Padmé's life flood his mind, and he feels like a lost child in a vast ocean, adrift and without direction.
Anakin feels his world collapsing around him, trapped in a cycle of love, desire, and despair. His struggle has only just begun, and the shadows of the future loom over him, leaving a bitter taste of uncertainty.
Thus concludes this chapter, but the story of Anakin Skywalker is just beginning. The decisions he will make, the sacrifices he will endure, and the dark paths that lie ahead will soon be revealed.
Stay tuned! The next chapter will come soon, where we will continue exploring the tensions, loves, and choices that will define the fate of our heroes in an ever-changing universe.
