Chapter 6

15 minutes before it all went wrong…

We made our way into the store as I looked over the list that Darry gave us, though Ponyboy seemed distracted. He kept looking at me and then looked around him.

"Hey, is everything okay?" I asked as we walked into the store.

He looked at me. "Yeah, yeah… Why do you ask?" he replied.

"Because you're looking around everywhere," I explained.

"Well, I'm fine. Nothing to worry about. Now, I'm gonna go grab the pasta, meet me in the produce section," he told me.

I stared at him blankly. We stood there in awkward silence for a bit.

"Well?" he asked. I smiled.

"Um, what does 'produce' mean again?" I asked him, kinda embarrassed.

"It means fruits and vegetables," Ponyboy said and he walked off.

I did what he said and soon enough, I found myself wandering the aisles, trying to find Ponyboy when I found him in the aisle where he said he'd be.

When I reached him, he was super pale and looked as if he'd seen a ghost or somethin'.

"Hey, I'm here! What's wrong?" I asked him, worried. Ponyboy was shaking slightly but he stopped himself before it got outta control.

"It's nothing, I'm fine…" he muttered. I raised an eyebrow. Ponyboy looked at me and sighed.

"Fine, I'll tell you," he grimaced as we walked out of the aisle and into the checkout line.

"Yesterday, when the socs jumped me, I was trying to fight back and kicked one of them in the face, and then I ran away. They shouted at me that I would pay for doing that and the last thing I heard was the word tomorrow," Ponyboy explained.

No wonder he'd been so nervous. I stopped walking as we left the store and hugged him.

"Don't worry, you'll be fine!" I promise, breaking away from the hug and patting his shoulder.

But Ponyboy wasn't looking at me, he was looking at something behind me.

I turned around and saw a blue Mustang pull up, with five socs coming out of it, walking towards us. They smiled and pulled out their blades.

Uh oh. Maybe we should've stayed home after all.

Chapter 7

When it all went wrong…

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up and my mood quickly turned sour.

"Get out of here," I told them roughly.

"This is our territory!" but they didn't seem to care.

They just smiled and laughed at me. I stepped in front of Ponyboy, trying to keep him out of danger, but it only took one look around to realize that we were surrounded.

I backed up right into another soc and was trying to find a way out. I thought to myself for the billionth time in my life: How am I gonna get out of this one?

I tried to form a plan, but my brain stayed blank. I reached into my pockets but I had nothing. I looked around for a broken bottle or a cigarette or something that would help, but I had nothing.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here? A couple of grease-balls," one said, smirking.

They came closer and shoved me against the wall, pulling out a blade and pressing it against my throat.

"Get off of me!" I shouted and I called them words that would've made Darry shout at me.

They pressed the blade against my arm and cut it, while blood trickled down the cut.

"Looks like these greasers need to be taught some manners," he sneered and he threw me on the ground. I lay sprawled on the ground for a quick second. Then I heard someone shout.

"Leave him alone!" It was Ponyboy. I looked up for a moment.

One of the socs had Ponyboy in a headlock and Pony was struggling against it, but it didn't last long before Pony grabbed the soc's arm and threw him on the ground.

I stumbled to my fight and noticed a blade was on the ground from the soc Ponyboy just escaped from.

I quickly grabbed it, backing away from the socs, but they were too quick for us.

They rushed to Ponyboy and me, kicking me and slugging me in the face.

I punched one in the nose and kicked one down, but my face was smarting.

I turned to look at Ponyboy. He was bashing the socs, but his face was bloody and already bruised up.

"Ponyboy, we gotta get out of here!" I shouted as we kept backing away from the socs, throwing them down.

He nodded and grabbed my hand as we started bolting down the street.

I could hear the socs coming after us, but we didn't make it far before they caught up.

They grabbed Ponyboy and tackled me, and my face came in contact with the concrete.

I looked up and saw Ponyboy as he was getting kicked in the chest. He yelled for Darry and the rest of the gang, but I doubted that they could hear us.

I pushed the soc off of me and punched his head, knocking him out, but when I turned around, I realized I was too late.

Ponyboy had been trying to fight off the other four, but one of them had grabbed a wrench from their pocket.

I watched in horror as the soc swung the wrench as hard as he could and Ponyboy crumpled to the floor, blood pouring from his head. The socs turned towards me and started approaching me.

They held me still, despite my best attempts at getting free, and the last thing I remember was a shoe coming close to my face. Then everything went black.
