Chapter 456

Adam had not been having a good day.

He had tried to secure the perfect CI, Jessie. She had just gotten out of prison, he figured he knew enough about her to convince her to help him but she had turned him down. Flat. Rather aggressively so.

He had hoped it would work out. He had thought he was offering her a great package. She hadn't thought so, and honestly he hadn't expected her to turn it down. Now he wasn't sure what to do.

Baby steps though. He could workshop a different CI later, first he had to take Koa for lunch. He had told Tani he'd try to keep an eye on him. Not to the extent he was doing for McGarrett, mainly because he couldn't dedicate that time because of how extensive watching Rowan and Jian was, but also because Tani didn't want that. Didn't want to spook him.

He got to the construction site and immediately went looking for Koa. But he went around both floors and couldn't find him. He had even flagged down one of his coworkers to see if he knew where he was, but they hadn't seen him.

He was starting to get worried. Then his phone rang, Rowan's contact flashed onto the screen. Now he was doubly worried.

"Hey Ro, is this an emergency, cause I'm kinda…"

"Well, yeah, it's kind of an emergency," she said even though she didn't sound all that out of sorts.

"What's going on, you feeling okay? Is Jian?"

"Oh, we're both fine," Rowan said brightly. "You had that kid start today, right?"

"Uh… Koa? Yeah. Why?"

"You're taking him for lunch, right?"

"Yes. Or well… I would be if I could find him. Is everything okay Ro? You said it was an emergency? Do you need anything? Who's with you?"

"Con's out doing something for Steve, so he sent Junior in to look after me and Jian," Rowan said absently. "I'm fine, we're fine, everything's fine. Just baking. Want me to save you some cookies?"

"Sure," he said not even bothering to ask what kind of cookies they were. Everything Rowan baked was delicious. For a moment the two of them were quiet. "Is that why you called?"

"Oh, no. I was calling about the kid, Tani's brother…" "—yeah what about him?" "… I just thought you'd like to know that he's ODing in a porta-potty right now."

Why the hell did she say that so nonchalantly? He turned and just through a window he could make out the two porta potties that had been brought in for the crew.

"What?!"

"The kid…"

"I heard you Rowan!" he cried as he rushed towards the porta-potty in question.

He probably shouldn't have but he hung up but he did as he approached them. One had a door that was closed entirely but one was partially open and in the door he could see the toe of a steel-toed boot sticking out. Adam flung that door open and found him.

Koa lay there prone, slumped against the side of the porta-potty. His face was pale, his lips chapped and ashen.

"Oh god, Koa, can you hear me?" he asked, putting a hand to the kids ace to find it sweaty and yet cold. He half turned to shout: "Hey, Eli, come quick! I need some help over here!"

Within seconds people were rushing towards him, ready to help.

"Adam what the hell happened?" Eli cried as he got close, he was one of the first people to reach them.

"I don't know I found him passed out."

At this point he picked Koa up and practically dragged him out of the porta-potty.

"We gotta call an ambulance," Eli said and Adam quickly shook his head. He could not let them do that.

"No," he said quickly. "No there's no time. Help me get him to my car."

Eli along with two other coworkers grabbed on to different parts of Koa, two on the legs, Eli beside Adam at the head, dragging him towards his car. They got him into the back and Adam quickly strapped him in.

He thanked everyone as he into his car. He got the car going before calling Rowan back. She answered on the first ring with a cheery hello, which was entirely inappropriate for the situation. But he couldn't lecture her about it at that point.

"Hey, yeah, I got him… I can't take him to the hospital, especially if he's ODing. Do… do you know what he's on?"

For a moment he heard a soft, drawn out hmmm as Rowan seemingly thought that question over. Time that neither of them had.

"I'm not sure the name, but it's a kind of opioid for sure," she said and he nodded. Well, that was somewhat helpful. "Since you can't take him to the hospital, I'd suggest taking him to the morgue. I'll call Noelani."

Before he could say anything, Rowan had hung up most likely to call Noelani just like she said she would. He just had to hope that he got Koa there before he was too far gone.

With their tentative agreement in place, Pua and the assassin, he could now call Con, made their way to the Pawnshop that Kamekona had directed them towards. They had agreed on taking Pua's squad car because he was still on duty but Con had been adamant on sitting up front even if it was against policy.

Even before they went in Pua had reminded Con of the deal. He played good cop, he'd try first and if, and only if, the Pawnshop owner didn't cooperate, would Con be able to step in. And even if he did step in, he wasn't allowed to kill anyone, especially in front of Pua.

So they had somewhat walked in together. Pua had gone through the door first, and Con had followed after. Pua had gone for the man standing behind the counter, who turned out to be the owner, while Con made it seem like he was looking around at the things being offered for sale.

However, the shop owner was not being reasonable and Pua was starting to get frustrated. Like, allow Con to take over, kind of frustrated.

"I think I would have remembered if someone came into my shop with a bunch of power tools. No one has," the Shop Owner said to him.

It wasn't the first time he had said that to him, and he was certain that the man was lying to him.

"Maybe they dealt with one of your employees," Pua offered, trying to be kind about it.

"I'm the only one who works here."

Behind the man Pua spotted a security camera pointed in the direction of the shop floor. That could have caught the perpetrators.

"Mind if I take a look at your security tapes?"

But that only earned him a laugh from the Shop Owner. "That? That doesn't actually record anything. It's just a deterrent."

Pua fought back the urge to sigh forcefully.

"So if I pull footage from the car dealership across the street I'm definitely not going to see anyone dropping by with power tools. You're absolutely positive about that?"

That rattled the Shop Owner's cage.

"I uh… I couldn't really say for sure. I mean a lot of people come in and out, you know?"

Pua opened his mouth to argue, but Con appeared at his side. He smiled warmly to Pua.

"Hey, you're doing great," he said in a tone that told him he didn't actually believe that. "Would you mind if I gave it a shot? I kinda speak this guy's language."

Pua shot the Shop Owner a bit of a glance. He was getting annoyed, maybe it would be a good time to switch out.

"No… I suppose."

At that Con moved forward, pointing that oddly dangerous smile at the Shop Owner. He kept leaning towards him over the display case between them and the guy was slowly begin to lean away from him.

The man had been eyeing Con with a smug smirk like Con was joke. Now that Con was closing in, that glittering smile on his face pointed in his direction, he seemed unnerved.

The quickness in which that smile dropped rivaled the quickness of Con's hands darting out. They grabbed the front of the Shop Owner's floral print Hawaiian shirt and tugged him sharply towards Con, half slamming the man's chest into his own display case.

With him bent over, Con's glare bore down into the man's panicked face.

"Listen here, ese, if you don't tell me what I want to know…" The Shop Owner turned his panicked face to Pua, his mouth opened to ask for help, but one quick shake from Con stopped him. "No, no, don't look at him. He can't help you now. You didn't wanna play nice and now you get to play with me."

"I but…"

"Listen to me very carefully, if you don't tell me what I want to know I'm going to put your head through this glass case. I know this is unbreakable glass, so I really want you to think about how hard I'mma hit you to get you to go through it."

Pua put a hand out. "I can't actually let you do that…"

Con shot a glance over his shoulder. "I'm a big believer of no witnesses and I will extend that to you if you continue to be a problem."

Pua took a moment to absorb that threat. He wanted to believe that this man wouldn't hurt him, but looking at him now, knowing what he did for a living and who he was, logically he knew he would.

Pua turned to the Shop Owner once more. "I'd tell him what he wants to know he's not in a good mood."

The man's mouth dropped open. His eyes darted between Pua and Con and then he seemingly chose life.

"Alright, two guys came in yesterday. But I didn't get their names and I didn't know those tools were hot, I swear."

"You don't have to worry about the names, I'll worry about that, okay?" Con said. "Just give me the tools and we'll be square. Comprede?"

At that the Shop Owner winced. "Uhm… I don't have them."

For a moment both Pua and Con frowned at him. But it was Con who growled: "What?"

"I already sold them."

Con's grip tightened, forcing the man's chest a little further into the metal edging of the display case. "Name," he growled, his voice low and dangerous. "Now."

"I can do that… you just… you just gotta let me go."

Con let the man go and he wildly backed away from him. He seemingly paused to catch his breath, his wild wide eyes pinned on Con. Con simply had to gesture for the Shop Owner to scamper off towards the back.

Once he was gone Con's shoulders relaxed, the tension seemed to breathe out of him. He shot another smile to Pua, finally that relaxed man that Pua had met that morning.

After a couple of minutes, the Shop Owner came back with the names written in a slip of paper. Con snatched it from him and then went into his Jacket. The man cringed but all Con came back with was a business card between two fingers that he offered to him.

He waited for the man to take it from him before saying: "Feel free to call him, he'll uh… compensate… you know… for the inconvenience," he said.

They got all the way to the door, the Shop Owner left behind reading the card over, before he called out to them.

"Wait… what… are you…?"

"Yep," Con said brightly. "Aren't you glad you told me the truth?" When the man just stared at him in horror, Con's dangerous smile appeared again along with a tilt of his head. "You told me the truth, right?"

The Shop Owner had gone white at this point, it sort of looked like he was going to passed out. Still he managed to stammer out a yes to them. Con thanked him for information and then left.

When they were by the car, Pua paused himself. "That card you gave him… whose was it?"

"My big brother's," Con said softly as he opened the door to the squad car.

Pua joined him in the car, letting Con hand over the name so he could look them up in his system to get an address. "You know, I really could have gone to get the footage form the car dealership. I'll have to anyway if I want to get my eyes on the perps."

Another blinding smirk was thrown at him. "Yeah. But that would have been an added step and… well… my way's more fun."

Pua shook his head but decided not to argue.

In a couple of minutes they had the address to go with the name and then they were driving off. They were one step closer to recovering those tools and being done with this and each other. Though, he had to admit, that it was actually kind of fun working with someone like Con.
