Chapter 16

True to her word, Fiyero did indeed find a young soldier to take Damla's shift. When he heard it was to give one of his Sergeants good news, he was more than happy to oblige. Of course, the overtime pay didn't hurt either.

"What do you think about us having kids?" Fiyero asked as he and Elphaba were getting ready for bed.

"Kids? What if they come out green?" She gave him a look. Honestly, she'd never entertained the idea. Her father, if he'd still been alive, would have made sure that she did not have a date, never mind children.

"I love you and you're green," he pointed out.

"True," Elphaba nodded.

"And our children will be royalty so they will be treated much better than you were. That pains me to have to say that but it's true," he said as he climbed under the covers of their bed.

"I know what you mean though. No children picking on them or fathers trying to hide them from the rest of the world or…" Elphaba shook her head not wanting to mention the other things she's had to endure. Fiyero held open the covers as she slid into the bed. He pulled her as close as he could.

"If I had my way no children would ever be hurt," he told her, kissing her forehead.

"It's a wonderful dream but we cannot control others or tell them how to raise their children," she said.

"Between you and Timothy, I just can't imagine that I ever complained about my parents," the Prince heaved a sigh.

"What kid doesn't complain about their parents? Besides the only reason that you and I even met was because you'd been kicked out of another college," she smirked.

"My dancing through life ended then… well maybe not ended, I just got a partner," Fiyero teased.

"Oh yeah that's me," Elphaba chuckled. They both knew she struggled to dance but she certainly wouldn't be taking up such a carefree attitude – especially since she would be becoming a Princess.

"Well, you never know," he smirked. She rolled onto her side and he followed suit so they were facing each other. The green woman cupped his cheek and asked,

"Do you want kids or is that just a requirement of being Prince?" Elphaba searched his eyes to see if there was any doubt.

"I want them. If you don't though, I won't pressure you. I've broken all sorts of molds when it comes to being a Prince. I can break one more," he told her.

"Well beyond my initial concerns… I don't know if I can have any. I'm not sure a doctor could tell me that either. If that turns out to be the case, would you be against adopting?" She asked.

"No, I wouldn't. It might even be a good thing to show our people," Fiyero nodded.

"No keeping you down huh?" Elphaba wondered.

"No. No matter what happens, as long as we're doing it together," he leaned down and kissed her.

"Don't start something you don't intend to finish my Prince," Elphaba teased him when they parted. He waggled his eyebrows but that was as far as things got. A knock on the door ruined the evening's possibilities. Fiyero groaned as his better half extricated herself and answered the door.

"Yes?" She was half hoping it was just a quick message.

"You better get dressed. We have a situation," Boq told her.

"Just me or both of us?" She asked the Munchkin.

"Both of you," he said.
