Chapter 14
Mayor Smythe and Mrs. Smythe had arrived later that day and they were quickly taken to see Fevzi and Sarah. Elphaba and Fiyero gave them some time to spend with the young people before they would discuss the next steps. The green woman updated him on the talk she'd had with Brrr and Fiyero agreed on their plan of action.
They were seated in the dining room enjoying some dinner when there was a knock on the door. Fiyero answered it and let Mayor Smythe and Mrs. Smythe in. Mr. Samuels quickly brought them some dinner as well. Elphaba thanked the chef and he smiled at her.
"I know that dinner is running a little late, but I have some dessert baking if anyone is interested," Mr. Samuels announced.
"You know I will have some," Fiyero smirked.
"Of course, sir. I made your favorite - chocolate chip cookies," Mr. Samuels chuckled.
"Honestly, how is it that you are still in the dating pool?" Fiyero asked.
"Well, I have to admit that I am not," the chef blushed.
"That nice lady from the market?" Elphaba wondered. The two had often gotten to talking when she'd be up late and having found her way to the kitchen.
"The very one. Her name is Margaret," Mr. Samuels was blushing a little bit. He tried to keep his private life private, but he felt that he could tell Elphaba and Fiyero things, despite the fact that they had company. Still if the new couple were there for Sarah and Fevzi then he was sure that they were good people.
"I'm so happy for you," the green woman smiled.
"Thank you," he smiled again and then disappeared into the kitchen.
"I do not understand how you do not weigh three hundred pounds. This food is amazing," Mayor Smythe spoke up.
"It is difficult, especially with the desserts," Fiyero chuckled.
"Can't wait," Mrs. Smythe smiled.
"I trust you had a safe journey," Elphaba said.
"Yes, thank you and thank you for helping Sarah. She is a wonderful girl and it pains me that all of this is happening," the mayor told them.
"My parents are aware and they are just as upset as you are," the Prince let them know.
"Was Mr. Ceyhun questioned?" Elphaba wanted to know.
"Yes. When he was told that Sarah had been rushed here, he collapsed. We had to have Doctor Howat check him out. I do not believe that he had anything to do with this. I think our idiot wanted us to think that the cobbler was the culprit," Mrs. Smythe said.
"Is he ok? As far as his character is concerned, I agree with your assessment. The man showed no contempt toward me so I highly doubt that he would take part in this marking ritual," the green woman said.
"He will be, but it bothers me that we'd have someone in our small community that would do this. After everything we've been through…" Mayor Smythe was upset.
"I can understand that and we wish that we could be there, but Lieutenant Dilek's men will find the culprit," Fiyero promised them. There was a knock on the door, interrupting their meal. Elphaba got the door this time.
"Damla, is everything ok?" The green woman was concerned that the Sergeant was at the door. The young soldier had not been watching Sarah and Fevzi as closely since Sarah was feeling better and the medical staff was keeping an eye on her.
"I know you're busy but…" Damla paused.
"Hey, whatever it is, I'm not too busy. Is Sarah, ok?" Elphaba asked.
"Actually, it's me," the Sergeant admitted. The green woman scooted her out into the hallway and closed the door behind her.
"What's wrong?" Elphaba was rapidly growing concerned.
"I think I'm pregnant, but I don't want to go to the doctor alone," Damla rushed all the words out at once.
"Did you talk to Timothy?" The green woman asked.
"I don't want to get his hopes up or worse if it's not what I think it is and it's something else…" Elphaba could understand her concern. More than likely she'd never been to a doctor until she'd become a soldier. It was a fairly new thing and the poor woman didn't know what was going on with her body.
"Come on. Let's go see Doctor Talib," the green woman said.
