Chapter 1
Moon Zero | Crow
It took time and perseverance on Hazelstar's part to find the energy and strength to clean up the wreckage so StormClan could have a place to call home. Nests were made with the torn pelts of the sails, making a comfortable hollow in the sand and stone. Darkwhisper had gone on patrol with Haillaurel and Rustyfeather to try and find proper prey to eat and keep their strength up. The sea gently roared towards the shore as Hazelstar awaited their return. Sleetcrash stuck nearby, seeking remedies for future injuries from the nearby sandy dunes. Meanwhile Rainstripe and Heatherpaw worked hard to pull planks of wood to the outskirts of camp, attempting to make it into a wall of sorts.
It didn't take long for Darkwhisper's patrol to return, jaws empty of any prey. Gray eyes glinted with irritation as the dark gray tabby tom curled his lips in a snarl. "There was nothing further inland for us to hunt. Not even a rat survived the crash!" He reported sourly.
"Perhaps we should look to the sea and find prey that way?" Rustyfeather suggested with a tip of her head.
"And fight the waves!?" Darkwhisper turned on the dark ginger tabby.
"Enough!" Hazelstar snapped, her tail puffed up and lashing irritably.
"But Hazel, its a mouse-brained idea to even-" He started again in fury, only to fall silent at the wordless hiss that escaped his leader.
"How can you be so annoying!?" Hazelstar hissed, "Get off your high perch and take a look around, Darkwhisper. We have to try everything no matter how stupid it sounds. Maybe along the shore we can find some pools to catch smaller prey. It won't be much, but it will be something!"
The dark gray and white tabby tom grimaced, looking away stiffly. "Fine. We'll try against tomorrow at dawn."
Soon, the light brown elderly she-cat turned to Haillurel, "Keep an eye out, alright?"
"I will." She promised softly, her hazel eyes flitting around the camp slightly. "I'll keep lookout for now."
"Let Rainstripe know." Hazelstar murmured. "She's been taking charge in ensuring the camp looks tidy after all."
Haillaurel blinked warmly, turning away with a wave of her tail. "Of course, I'll report back if I see anything important."
The pale she-cat quickly scaled the nearest cluster of rocks, reaching their peaks with relative ease. Hazelstar narrowed her eyes, unsure how to feel about the she-cat. She was friendly, yes, but she was lacking in security. Often nervous and keeping an eye out for danger. While it was soothing for the rest of them, the light brown she-cat could only frown at the thought that Haillaurel might just leave her post and flee should any danger actually show up.
Rustyfeather was swift in following the pale she-cat, sending Hazelstar a reassuring look in those pale blue eyes of hers.
Maybe, I am just overthinking it.
Haillaurel hasn't run off yet anyway.
She would have done it by now if she wanted to.
It was reasonable enough for the elderly leader to turn back to Sleetcrash as the light gray she-cat reappeared, this time with some catmint in her jaws. Her pale green eyes bright with triumph as she padded to the sail-cloaked spot where she made her den. Clearly, there were herbal remedies around, whether that could provide for them in later moons was another question entirely. Hazelstar returned to her silent musings, enjoying what was left of the sunlight.
As nightfall approached, Rainstripe and Heatherpaw returned with some sort of sea-bird that they managed to ambush. It had a long yellow beak and webbed feet. Hazelstar blinked in surprise, it was a gull. Suddenly feeling a bit more assured, she knew that sticking by the wreckage had been a good idea. It provided not only shelter, but a place to eat and hopefully thrive in peace. The only issue was, there was no other cats being picked up on the winds. Hazelstar fretted over how they had many she-cats, but a single tom.
It would be hard to bring forth a legacy that the spirit-cat could be happy with, but they had only just arrived only a half-moon ago, give or take. As the days seemed to blur, Hazelstar could only watch as the cats she was chosen to lead began to find their paws. Darkwhisper was a pain, occasionally annoying as he constantly overstepped his place. However, Rainstripe proved herself as a reasonable second-in-command. She weathered Darkwhisper's complaints with stride and assured that his complaints did not fall on deaf ears.
So much so, that the two seemed to be sharing a den of importance. Another thing Hazelstar had taken note of was how a playful interaction seemed to soothe the insecure heart of Haillaurel. The pale she-cat was always unable to feel at home, yet Rustyfeather brought her companion a sense of calm. It was hardly a surprise that the two she-cats began to share a small sandy cove as their den. With the dark ginger tabby's care and guidance, it was as though the many moons upon the sea-monster had finally blossomed.
Sleetcrash was another story. The self-proclaimed healer refused to turn her back on medicinal supplies for the good of the colony. Her sail-covered den was all she needed to protect the catmint she gathered. She even managed to venture out with Heatherpaw to bring back another sprig of catmint and some plantain to help dress wounds with some rosemary that she managed to find. The plantain proved useful in carrying it all back to camp.
Yet, as the moon shifted and changed, Hazelstar knew trouble was slowly rising.
Moon 1 | Fish
The warmth of the following moon had swept over their new territory. Hazelstar watched as Rainstripe began to prepare for the duties of the morning. Her meow rang out clearly as she chose Darkwhisper to explore the territory with Rustyfeather before turning to Haillaruel and suggesting her to hunt with Hazelstar along the shore. Rainstripe rounded it out that she would be taking Heatherpaw on another hunting expedition in the opposite shore that the first hunting patrol will take.
The small Clan was being stretched thin. Hazelstar narrowed her eyes slightly before sitting up and heading down from her post to lend a helping paw. She didn't want Rainstripe to lead the Clan entirely, after all.
"Is there any objects, Hazelstar?" The dark gray tabby she-cat asked, her gray eyes searching over her leader.
She shook her head. "Not at all, I just hope to remind that these duties need to be spread throughout the day. We cannot leave Sleetcrash all alone should some wild animal come and attack."
"I haven't considered any threats." She blinked, her eyes becoming quite round. "I apologize, I'll keep that in mind."
"It's perfectly fine. Darkwhisper and Rustyfeather should head out first to ensure the area around our camp is safe before Haillaurel's hunting patrol is sent out." She suggested warmly, pride glowing in her dark brown eyes. "I'm still proud of your imitative, mind you. I look forward to many more moons working alongside you."
"Thank you." Rainstripe dipped her head, before turning back ahead. "Patrols, share your morning prey and discuss among yourselves of how far you wish to search. We need to ration prey while we can in this cool moons."
Hazelstar turned and padded towards Haillaurel, putting her trust into the insecure she-cat. "Shall we?"
"By all means." Haillaurel meowed respectfully, "Would you like to pick or should I?"
"This time I'll pick, but next time we are paired together, you pick. Does that sound fair?" She asked patiently.
"Yes." She whispered awkwardly, looking away.
Hazelstar blinked, not quite sure if she particularly liked this insecure she-cat. Yet, she chose to give her a chance altogether. She turned to the prey pile, seeing Darkwhisper snatch up a songbird and take it to Rustyfeather. The light brown she-cat couldn't help but feel grateful that she hadn't been paired with the sour-faced tom. With great care, she picked up a small sea-bird and brought it over to Haillaurel so they could pluck the feathers and save them for the nests so they could be kept warm and soft for moons to come.
The two she-cats talked idly, planning if they should head to the north or south shores to search for prey or even venture into the forest away from the beach. All the while, Darkwhisper and Rustyfeather had long since left after sharing their meal, leaving Sleetcrash to gather the feathers to find the softest ones to line the nests with. As the sun climbed higher and higher, voices soon called out from the edge of camp.
"Hazelstar! Hazelstar!"
It was Rustyfeather, rushing into the camp with sure-footed steps in the sand, her tail raised as the tip curled in such excitement that Hazelstar was convinced that they found another colony of cats on the land. She rose to her paws, stepping forward, before pausing seeing a stranger before Darkwhisper. They were an unusually spotted pale she-cat. Her pelt was silvery-white with pale gray rosettes along her pelt and soft gray eyes full of curiosity and warmth.
"This is Miyun." Rustyfeather began to chatter out of excitement, "We ventured as far as we could and found a barn on the other side of those tussocks of grassy dunes. Well, she told it was a barn. It was on solid earth as well, it's a bit of a cliff to climb, but there are Twolegs that live here and even other cats!"
"That's great to know." Hazelstar blinked warmly, looking Miyun over a moment before glancing to Darkwhisper. "Seem you two have a great adventurous spirit."
"We weren't planning to climb it, but this cat was standing on the rise looking out to the sea. It was only fair to investigate to ensure they weren't a threat. Turns out, she was just a loner who wished to join us." Darkwhisper reported tersly.
"Is something the matter?" Hazelstar murmured.
Darkwhisper simply glanced to Miyun who looked around the camp with wonder.
"I suppose he was right, it really isn't much to look at." Miyun chuckled to herslef, her dove-colored eyes meeting Hazelstar. "I'm sorry for intruding. I should have been asking you if I should join, right? They reported to you, so you must be the leader of this colony."
"We are calling ourselves StormClan." Hazelstar informed the she-cat. "I am Hazelstar, chosen to lead this small Clan. I'm afraid that Darkwhisper is the only tom among us, so I hope you can understand if he chooses to be with a single she-cat."
"The only tom?" Miyun blinked, curiously. "But that ginger tabby is also a tom, is he not?"
"No, Rustyfeather is a she-cat." Hazelstar answered patiently. "She has been for as long as I've known her since she was a kit."
"I see, I'm sorry for being disrespectful of her wishes." Miyun rounded her eyes in apology. "I never meant to offend, it is just not that common."
"I will let it slide this time, but make that mistake again and we might have to decide some consequences for it." Hazelstar warned, looking to Darkwhisper. "Aside from Miyun, is it safe for us to hunt?"
"It is. I will see to Rainstripe about what Miyun can do for today." Hazelstar nodded before looking at Miyun. "Rainstripe will assign us to patrols while ensuring the camp remains protected. Prove yourself to us and we shall see how you fit in."
"I understand. May you have good hunting." The spotted pale she-cat murmured respectfully.
Hazelstar glanced at Haillaurel. "Let's get going."
Haillaurel closed her eyes, taking a steadying breath before opening them with a fierce determination. "Let's." She answered strongly and hurrying to her side.
Hazelstar began to lead the way to the southern shore. She knew they haven't begun exploring it just yet. Her paws sank into the sand as she trotted along, Haillaurel was close behind, her eyes and ears flicking this way and that. Clearly, the insecure she-cat was trying to keep alert for her leader.
The further they left the camp behind, the more that Haillaurel seemed to stare at the sandy dunes. Hazelstar was about to scold her, when the rank scent of a fox reached her nose. The light brown she-cat wrinkled her nose, it was hard to tell whether it was a powerful red fox or a meek gray fox. However, she knew, from her hunting expedition on her own a quarter-moon prior, that meant the fox could have caught something.
"Let's take a peek through the strands of grass. Maybe it's still there or maybe it has prey it abandoned." Hazelstar suggested.
Haillaurel blinked, looking between the sandy hills and her leader before giving into temptation. "Very well, but let's be careful. You say you have eight lives to spend, but I'm not taking any chances."
"I understand." She murmured, creeping closer to the sandy dunes; Haillaurel just a few paces behind.
Hazelstar waited a moment before peering over the rise of the sand and between the tussocks of grass. There a red fox was plucking feathers off of a plump seagull. They needed this prey just as much as the large fox did. Hazelstar glanced at Haillaurel who looked absolutely terrified. It was far too close to their camp to feel safe about. A plan soon formed.
"Skirt towards camp with me. There is some brush over there, I will leave you there and be a few paces away. We start yowling as fiercly as though we are about to defend the sea-monster from the rats. If we do it right, we can sound like many cats and scare it away from our camp and steal its catch." Hazelstar explained.
Haillaurel blinked, shivering a little. "What if it doesn't work?"
Hazelstar narrowed her eyes and hissed in a scolding tone. "Be brave, Haillaurel! This isn't just for prey, this is to protect everyone back in camp!"
Haillaurel flinched, looking away. "I'll try."
"Trying is all I need." She snorted, carefully slithering back to base of the dune. "Now follow me and keep close. I know you can do this. You survived the impossible and you can survive this as well."
The pale cream she-cat nodded, swiftly following despite the tremble in her legs and paws. She was taking slow deep breaths behind Hazelstar, trying to find strength and a sense of calm to not ruin her leader's plan. After a moment, Hazelstar was back at the rise, behind the fox and ushered Haillaurel to sneak to the brush. Her pale coat would protect her from being noticed while Hazelstar followed the rise of the dune, keeping in the grassy tussocks as much as she could. With a flick of her tail, the pair of she-cats let out rounds of bone-chilling yowls, slowly growing stronger and longer after each other.
The red fox practically jumped out of it's own fur and skin. Abandoning its catch as it raced away without looking back. It's tail tucked between its legs as it let out screaming calls of fear and warning to any other creature in the area. Swiftly, Hazelstar leaped through the tall grasses with a screaming yowl of agitation, before snatching up the seagull and dragging it over to Haillaurel for the other she-cat to help carry it back over the sandy dunes and back to camp.
The hunt was successful and the danger of the predator that caught it was also frightened off. There was a light of relief in Haillaurel's eyes, as well as a spark of pride deep within them. Clearly, the she-cat was just as brave deep down. Giving Hazelstar a feeling of hope for the she-cat to win against her mental hurdles in time.
.
Once back at camp, Hazelstar shared the news of the red fox and how she and Haillaurel chased it off to keep it at bay and steal its prey. Rustyfeather wasn't too happy to know Haillaurel was endangered, but soon settled for that they were at least safe. However, Rainstripe was swift to take her apprentice out to try and get more prey as promised; explaining that Sleetcrash would have Miyun to join her in seeking out more herbal remedies from the forest inland.
Hazelstar had no choice, but to accept her deputy's plans and watched as the pair left to seek more hunting on the northern shores. If they were lucky, there wouldn't be more dangerous predators on the beach. The Clan leader found herself watching her cats, taking note of how Sleetcrash was teaching Miyun the herbs she had so far to how Rustyfeather rasped her tongue over Haillaurel's pelt to sooth her anxiety after the hunt. Darkwhisper was on the tallest rock, keeping watch on the outside of their fragile camp.
Despite how Darkwhisper was, Hazelstar was glad to have a cat like him around. He took his guarding duties seriously and was willing to defend what was now theirs. In truth, StormClan was in safe paws with Rainstripe and Darkwhisper within it. Although, she couldn't shake the feeling that the dark gray tabby seemed suspicious of Miyun. The pale she-cat seemed friendly, but not even Hazelstar could be certain.
Evening was approaching when Rainstripe and Heatherpaw had returned from their hunting expedition. In the young she-cats jaws was some strange creature with eight long limbs. Hazelstar blinked, trying to figure out what it was as the cats gathered to see the huntress' catch.
Miyun blinked, surprised. "I think this is what my mother called an octopus. I'm not sure why it's called that, but its supposedly delicious. It's just usually very difficult to catch."
"Well, then I guess we will have a nice feast for today." Rainstripe chuckled, looking at Sleetcrash. "You should at least eat something before you and Miyun head out."
"We will." She promised, looking towards the pale silver she-cat. "Want to try an octopus arm with me before we go?"
"I'd love to." Miyun purred warmly before taking off a couple of octopus arms to take to Sleetcrash.
Hazelstar blinked, wondering just how much they could trust the new she-cat at all. She seemed to be fitting in, but only time would tell if it would change.
Moon 2 | Flower
The big day had finally arrived, Hazelstar had been pacing in her wooden-clad den in anticipation; practicing the ancient words that Cricketwhisper had taught her. Giving promise of the name she should give the spirit-cat's place among the endless sea she met them over and over. It was time and she wouldn't look back on the choices she had to make. For StormClan to survive, she had to do it.
The morning sun rose above the sea as she scaled the slanted deck, her bronze-colored eyes catching the golden rays of the sunlight. Her pelt shining gold as she stood powerfully, the seabreeze caressing through her fur, billowing it into her face slightly. It was as though the sea she once called home was welcoming the new changes to come. The stars have guided her sea-cats for many generations and now she knew the storms have led her here for good reason.
"Cats old enough to fish in the sea, come below Slanted-deck for a Clan meeting!" She yowled.
As her cats gathered, she watched their eyes stare up at her with anticipation and confusion. She kept her head and tail high as she spoke the words she had practiced.
"It has been two moons since we awakened from the tides and windstorm taking our sea-home down. Now, the time has come for us to accept the truth. We are StormClan and we will be staying at this beach and hunting along its shore for many moons to come. As such, I wish to call upon Heatherpaw. Her skills in swimming have achieved her to become an excellent huntress in the tide pools of the north, isn't that right Rainstripe?"
Rainstripe dipped his head respectfully. "Yes, that is correct."
"Heatherpaw, step forward." She commanded.
The light brown she-cat hesitated before she approached the slanted deck and stood firm in the sand.
"I, Hazelstar, call upon Cricketwhisper of the Sea of Stars to look down upon this apprentice. She had learned the ways of the sea-monster's rocking and the ways of this beach to provide. Heatherpaw, do you promise to provide and protect StormClan with your life?"
"With every breath I take." Heatherpaw replied, her heather blue eyes trained on Hazelstar as she leaped down and landed before the young she-cat.
"Well said." She murmured, stepping forward. "From this moment on, Heatherpaw, you will be now known as Heatherstem. StormClan honors your devotion." She rested her head upon the she-cat's head, who licked her shoulder in return. "You are now a full warrior of StormClan. You will have a silent vigil tonight. You may only break it should danger appear and only Rainstripe can relieve you of this duty."
"Thank you." Heatherstem whispered, warmth in her mew. "I'll do the Clan proud, I promise."
"I believe you." Hazelstar murmured back, turning her attention to Rainstripe. "The meeting is over, you may assign the patrols for today."
"Thank you." The dark gray tabby dipped her head, looking to the rest of the Clan with pride.
.
As the days passed, prey continued to be bountiful. In Hazelstar's mind, the moon was living up to its name as small trout and sea bass were being brought to their prey pile. Even now while on a patrol to explore more of their nearly made territory to expand it to include enough hunting opportunities into the forest she found herself with Miyun and Heatherstem. The two stuck close to her as they ventured along their current border on the shore to complete their territory markers.
However, while Hazelstar meandered behind, letting Miyun and Heatherstem take the initiative, she noticed some wet pawprints in the sand on the beach. She narrowed as she picked up a scent of cat. She wasn't sure whether they were tom or she-cat, but she turned to the members of her patrol and flicked her tail.
"Miyun, Heatherstem." The two she-cats looked at her, puzzled, "To the dunes at once, there is another cat nearby."
With grim expressions the two cats hurried to the sand dunes to hide behind the grass on top. Hazelstar was swift to follow, using her long-furred tail to sweep up their pawprints so they could hide effectively. Soon enough, an unknown cat was stalking back through and, with a flick of her ears, Hazelstar lead the surprise attack on the stranger. The cat let out a startled yowl and scrambled away, their tail puffed up in terror as they were chased back over the border.
Thankfully, it seemed to be all that was needed. Quickly, they marked their new border for as long as they could before returning back to camp to let the two hunting parties have their turn in the evening and giving them a chance to guard the camp and ensure all was well.
Moon 3 | Meadow
The sun shone brightly as Hazelstar kept watch over the camp. Her dark brown eyes scanning the rocky walls of their camp for any danger lurking. Now that she knew there were other cats, let alone Twolegs in the area, she was on high alert. Foxes were just as dangerous, but she couldn't rest easy knowing that a sea-monster length away was the cliffside that led into Twoleg territory. They had a small bit of forest to share hunting rights with loners and rogues and even the other various predators of the land. Just beyond the edge of trees past the sandy dunes heading inland was a meadow that had begun to bloom last moon.
She could remember having gone there and being met with the aggression of the loners and rogues that called it their hunting spot. It took a lot of talking, but she chose to allow them free hunting rights on the meadow as long as her cats also had rights to catch land-prey. After all, with the pools brought from the low tide, her cats would eat well enough without it; however, she had to give her cats a fighting chance to not starve during the high tides. The leader of the rogues agreed, while Miyun won the favor of the loners in her promise to speak out for them.
It was a successful meeting and gave them all hunting rights on the shared bit of forest. She just hoped it would last until they had the skills to hunt in the shallows like Heatherstem seemed to. The young she-cat had powerful legs and admirable skill in swimming and diving for prey in the pools for more sea-prey. Hazelstar was positive that they would be able to learn such a skill in time.
In fact, the rogues often checked StormClan borders. So much so that Rainstripe and Darkwhisper often came across them while renewing the markers. Luckily, they seemed to be satisfied that they haven't moved it from their chosen positions. Rainstripe would report on their meetings to Hazelstar, explaining how she would tell embarrassing stories about herself as she attempted to do right by Clan and Non-Clan cats. Much to their delight, the rogues seem to find it rather humorous and them less of a threat to the way of life they had known for many moons.
However, Hazelstar felt uncomfortable when Rustyfeather and Haillaurel reported their hunt being soured by Twolegs on the shore doing something. They aren't sure what, but they were too worried of what might happen if they stuck around too long. Haillaurel confessed it was her idea to hunt elsewhere whenever it happened. Hazelstar wasn't pleased, but thanked the two for being cautious. They were a small Clan and potentially losing them would only make it more difficult to thrive.
It took Heatherstem and Miyun padding back into camp to reveal their misadventure towards the south of their territory. Heatherstem had confessed about trying to cross a strange black path and some kind of land-monster had screamed at them as it skidded to a halt. Miyun was quick to back up Heatherstem at the shocked gasps, but it was too late.
"You are to never cross those land-monster paths again!" She ordered.
Miyun glared at the light brown she-cat and argued, "Hazelstar, there are more hunting oppurtunities on the other side! We could have expanded the southern half of the territory into the farmland there!"
"And risk having a land-monster pounce on a cat stupid enough to be on it's path?" She snarled, fear coursing through her pelt. "It's for the good of the Clan that it never happens again."
The dark ginger she-cat thumped her tail on the sand. "Hazelstar, you're being unreasonable! Sooner or later this Clan will grow in numbers. We will need the extra territory now, not later!"
"Rustyfeather, I don't want any cat making a rash decision like this. Not as long as I'm still alive." She growled warningly. "We can try again, but we don't have many cats, we have to preserve what little we have until we have enough skill to take those risks. What if they hot attacked by a land-monster and they were killed or even wounded beyond Sleetcrash's abilities?"
"Fine, but don't expect any cat to not cross one of those... those paths again." Rustyfeather growled.
"They're called thunderpaths." Miyun spoke up, her gray eyes trained on Hazelstar. "They're only dangerous if you don't know how to cross them or freeze. Heatherstem wasn't fast enough, but your so-called land-monster was quick to not run into her. I don't know what your water-monsters are like, but I promise, it isn't dangerous if you know what your doing."
"This discussion is over, Miyun. I don't care what path those land-monsters patrol. I just want my cats safe a while longer." She snapped before turning away from the cats that gathered.
The light gray she-cat padded forward, her long fur being pulled gently by the wind. "Maybe we should walk together, Hazelstar?"
"No, I need to walk on my own." She sighed, looking at the healer almost defeated. "Another time I will, alright, Sleetcrash?"
"As you wish." Sleetcrash whispered, padding away to go in search of more herbs.
Hazelstar blinked forlornly, her mind wandering as she quietly shuffled herself out of camp to wander the beach alone for a while. Slowly she meandered along the beach, stopping at the edge of the border and following it as she thought over what had just transpired. Perhaps she was just old and afraid? Perhaps she lived too long on the safety of the sea-monster she called home?
So much had changed in such little time. It was only a few moons ago when she awakened on this beach and now she was trying to protect cats who didn't value their single life. Suddenly, she understood Haillaurel's insecurities and timid nature. The she-cat was trying to survive and she pushed her boundaries. Then, would Miyun also push their boundaries as well? Push them into a new life on land to be wiser and smarter?
I may have made a rash and harsh judgment.
But, if they die to a land-monster out of my viewpoint, what kind of leader would that make me?
Hazelstar didn't have any answers for her questions, but she did slowly wander her way back to camp with more clarity than before. This was their home now and it was no longer as safe as being on the sea-monster, but it was no safer than their perilous battles against the wind, rain, and waves. That much, she was certain.

I will cover 4 moons a chapter, the goal is 1,000 moons (as that will be 100 years in total)
Also, I love the Lunar calendar so I will continue to happily use it. I personally believe that the sea-cats used this for whenever they stopped somewhere for a short time.
Crow = March; the first sign of warmer temperatures.
Fish = April; when the fishing is really good
Flower = May; when all spring flowers are in full bloom
Meadow = June; when the hotter months arrive and farms remove meadow flowers
