Chapter 15: Cerulean City Gym Battle Clyde vs Misty
"Is it alright if I go next?" Clyde asked the older girl beside him. Lynn simply nodded, so he started putting his stuff and jacket on the seat he was sitting on and Ronnie Anne items beside them. He then made his way down to meet the gym leader, while Ronnie Anne made her way where Lynn was. He declined a swimsuit and made his way to the floating platform, while Misty went to the backroom to grab the proper Pokemon.
Ronnie Anne took a seat on the opposite side of her mentor, while still drying herself with the towel. "That was an interesting battle plan," Lynn said to her. The younger trainer looked at her and saw the smirk on her face and immediately looked away in embarrassment, knowing where the older girl was going with this.
"I don't know what you're talking about" Ronnie Anne denied with a blush coating her cheeks.
"If I remember correctly…" Lynn started saying, pretending to think. "...Linc had used similar plans in a few of his gym battles. It seems like you must've watched a lot of his matches instead of studying before coming on this journey." The young dark-haired girl could only cover her head with the towel and let out a growl of embarrassment, because that was what she did. Lynn meanwhile let out some laughter at her student's embarrassed state, then decided she teased her enough and started patting her on the back. "Relax Santiago, it was impressive that you pulled something like that off on your first try" Ronnie Anne removed the towel and looked at her in surprise. "The first time I tried to battle like Linc, it was a mess and I ended up hurting my own Pokemon instead of my opponent's. You did something impressive and should be proud."
Ronnie looked at her with shock and awe, before looking away again. "Thanks" she muttered out of embarrassment and a bit of joy at being praised, not that she'd ever admit it.
Soon Misty had returned and took her place on the battlefield with Clyde. "This is an official match between Misty of the Cerulean City Gym and Clyde McBride from Royal Woods." The referee's voice was loud, clear, and echoed throughout the building. "Both trainers will be able to use two Pokemon, with only the challenger being able to switch out Pokemon. The battle is over when both of someone's Pokemon is unable to battle or one forfeits. The match begins now."
"Come out Oddish" Clyde shouted releasing said Pokemon onto one of the platforms.
"I'll start off with Psyduck" Misty called out releasing it on a platform. It was a yellow duck with a blank expression on its face.
"Start off with Razor Leaf Oddish!" The young boy shouted. Oddish nodded and started launching his leaves opponent.
"Psyduck dodge them and use Water Gun!" Misty commanded. The Duck Pokemon dodged the attack and opened its mouth and shot out a stream of water. Hit its target, but didn't do much damage.
"Are you okay Oddish?" Clyde asked, receiving a nod for an answer. "Okay, now get closer and use Stun Spore!" The Weed Pokemon then hopped to different platforms.
"Use Water Pulse!" The young gym leader shouted. Psyduck then created an orb of glowing water between its short wings, then firing it towards its opponent. Unfortunately Oddish was able to avoid the attacks. Oddish got to a platform close enough to it and released yellow pollen in the surrounding area. It covered the Water Pokemon and it felt the effects immediately, being paralyzed and unable to move. "Quickly Psyduck get into the water to get the pollen off!" Misty screamed in worry. The Duck Pokemon attempted to move, despite the effects of Stun Spore.
"Now's our chance, use Razor Leaf on it while it can't move!" Clyde commanded in urgency, knowing if it made it to the water then it wouldn't be paralyzed anymore. Oddish used his attack again, this time hitting its target. Even though it was getting hurt, falling to the ground from Razor Leaf, and could barely move from Stun Spore, Psyduck still tried to make it to the water. However before it would've made it, it was hit with another Razor Leaf, knocking it out and into the water. Psyduck fell in with a splash and floated on the water.
"Psyduck is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Oddish." Clyde let out a sigh of relief, while Ronnie Anne cheered in the stands. Lynn meanwhile stared on with narrow eyes.
"She went easy on him" Lynn muttered to herself, but her student heard her. Noticing the younger girl heard her, she started to explain. "Psyduck should know Confusion at the very least, but I would think her's should know Zen Headbutt and Psychic. However she only used Water type attacks, knowing they weren't very effective against Oddish. So the question is why didn't she use any of them?" Ronnie Anne thought about it and realized she was right and different then her match. Now she was wondering the same thing.
Misty recalled her Psyduck and sent out her second Pokemon. "It's your turn Poliwag" the Pokemon landed on a platform. It looked like a large blue tadpole with stubby feet, a swirl on its stomach, pink mouth, and big round eyes.
"Let's start off with Stun Spore!" Clyde shouted confidently. Just like before, Oddish started releasing yellow pollen into the surrounding area.
"That's not going to happen this time," the young red head said with a smirk. "Poliwag dive into the water to protect yourself!" The Tadpole Pokemon immediately jumped in and hid beneath the depths, protected from the falling pollen.
"Okay…This is harder than I expected" Clyde muttered, while scanning the water for movement. "Oddish, get ready to use Razor Leaf" Oddish nodded and watched the water as well.
"Now use Body Slam, followed with Hypnosis!" Misty ordered, to which Poliwag jumped out of the water behind Oddish and slammed it's body against him. When Oddish turned to attack, Poliwag's eyes glowed and the Weed Pokemon fell asleep. "Now use Ice Beam!" The Tadpole Pokemon then shot a bright blue beam out it's mouth, fired it at Oddish, and froze him in a block of ice.
"Oddish is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Poliwag." Clyde let out a sigh but recalled Oddish, meanwhile Ronnie Anne had a frown on her face.
"Seems like she was just testing him in the first battle" the young Mexican American trainer commented. Lynn meanwhile stared at the battlefield with suspicion.
"Yeah…" the older trainer said with narrowed eyes. While trying to figure out why the sudden change in difficulty, when she heard something behind her. Subtly looking behind her she saw someone cleaning the chairs, it was one of the staff. She started to wonder if that person was always behind them, and if so for how long. 'Was it another test…' her eyes then went to the young gym leader. '...Or did someone hear what I said?' She wanted to pay more attention to the match.
"Let's finish this Milcery" Clyde said releasing her on the platform. Milcery let out a cry of happiness and hovered happily.
"Well I didn't expect that," Misty said, surprised by her opponent's Pokemon. "Well Poliwag, let's start things with Water Gun!" Poliwag hopped onto the platform and shot a stream of water from it's mouth.
"Dodge it Milcery and then use Sweet Kiss!" The Cream Pokemon nodded and approached her opponent. She avoided the water and got close and planted a kiss on Poliwag. The Tadpole Pokemon then became confused and started swaying side to side. "Now use Tackle!" Milcery then started tackling her opponent.
"Try to shake it off Poliwag and use Bubble Beam!" Misty shouted. Poliwag attempted to attack, but it ended up hurting itself. All the while Milcery was tackling it and dealing damage.
"Finish it with Dazzling Gleam!" Clyde ordered, seeing Poliwag starting to regain its senses. Milcery started to glow brightly and released a bright flash. The flash did enough damage and made Poliwag fainted.
"Poliwag is unable to battle" the referee announced while holding his hand on Clyde's side up in the air. "Milcery is the winner and Clyde Mcbride has won the match." Both trainer and Pokemon started to cheer, Ronnie Anne stood up and started cheering, while Lynn stayed silent. The older trainer subtly looked behind and saw the same staff member cleaning the exact same spot as before.
Misty called back her Poliwag and made her opponent, with a smile on her face. "That was an excellent match" she said, once Clyde made it to solid ground. "You and your Pokemon know each other very well and have strong trust with one another. So as proof of your victory, I'm proud to give you the Cascade Badge." She then pulled out a water drop badge from her pocket and gave it to the smiling boy.
"Thank you so much," Clyde said with a smile, his voice full of pride. Just like his travel companion, he stared down at the water drop badge for a few seconds before noticing something behind it. It was a folded piece of paper, upon opening it his face went red. He looked back at the gym leader, who just gave him a little smile and a wink. He quickly shoved the paper into his pocket before making his way to the others.
"So now there's only one," the young gym leader said. Looking up towards her last challenger, a competitive look in her eyes and a challenging smirk on her lips. Lynn meanwhile stared at the girl with narrow eyes and a slight frown on her lips.
