Chapter 24: Going to the Underground Fights
[Office Building, Saffron City]
Lynn and Ronnie Anne had reached their destination, which was a tall office building. Who owned it or what they did there, neither of them knew. Ronnie Anne looked at the building confused and looked to see her smiling. She said nothing and started walking, gesturing to her to follow, which she did. They walked into the lobby of the building that was currently empty and walked up the reception desk. The receptionist was a 30 something man wearing a nice gray suit, short cut black hair, and clean shaven. He saw them approach and put on a friendly smile. "Hello there, how can I help you?"
"Hey, we are here for the special service you have here" Lynn replied with a smile of her own.
His friendly demeanor vanished, he tensed up, and subtly looked around. "I'm sorry, but I think you-"
"The Murkrow flies at night," Lynn started interrupting him. "Chansey dances in the afternoon, and Onyx burrows underground in the morning." Ronnie Anne looked at her confused, while the man became less tense but his expression didn't change.
He looks around once more, before pulling 2 forms from his desk and puts them on the desk in front of them. "Sign these and then you'll have to pay the entrance fee" he said in a professional tone. Lynn started signing it and paying with Ronnie following her lead. After taking back the forms he made a call and after a minute or so, another man in a black suit came to the lobby. "He will take you where you need to go, follow him and don't attempt to go anywhere else." Both nodded and started to follow him. He took them to where the elevators were. Instead of using one of the public elevators, he took them to a private elevator that needed a card key to use. Once in he pushed Parking 1, Parking 2, and an unmarked button at the same time. Both girls could feel the elevator go down and stayed silent. When it stopped and the doors opened, he gestured for them to exit. "Enjoy your time and don't cause trouble" he said before the elevator doors closed
The 2 trainers found themselves in a fairly large octagonal room. In the center of the room was a large pentagon that went lower into the ground. A wire fence surrounded the pentagon with a small built-in staircase on 2 sides of the pentagon. Around the fence was baseball park style seating, with 3 different tables in different parts of the room. One was another man in a suit taking bets, another had another suited man taking participants for the fights, and the last had a woman in casual clothing with a few coolers selling drinks. While it wasn't packed, there were a good number of people in the seats, getting drinks, and entering to participate. There was also another elevator off far against another wall.
"Whoa! I didn't expect this" Ronnie Anne said looking around in slight amazement. "I would've never guessed something like this was under an office building."
"That's the point Santiago" Lynn replied with a chuckle. "If it was in abandoned buildings or suspicious looking places like warehouses, that would be one of the first places police would look. It's not surprising to see companies do this to generate extra income. They make it so you need a passphrase to get in, escort people to get in, and have another way for people to leave." She then pointed to the other elevator. "That one probably goes to a room in the back of the building with a door back into the building and one to the alley behind it. That's where we'll leave."
As the 2 girls made their way to get seats, a new match was just getting started. In the pentagon was a 20 something year old male wearing karate gi facing a Machoke, there was also a woman dressed as a referee.
"So I'm guessing that passphrase won't work anywhere else?" the younger girl asked, while watching the fight. "Also what were the tables with people lined up for?"
"That's right, it's only for here and they change them every 3 months or so" the veteran trainer replied. While watching the young man try to grapple the large Pokemon, only for him to be pushed away with ease. "As for those tables, the ones being run by the suits are for people participating or taking bets and the other one is mostly likely selling drinks and maybe snacks." She then let out a sound of discomfort seeing the young fighter get knocked flying after charging at the Machoke. "Why? You're not thinking of betting right? Cause you're not entering." She then gave her a glare.
"No, no, I was curious" she replied shakily, scared of the older girl's glare. Her attention was brought back to the fight hearing a whistle. The referee had blown the whistle and indicated that the young man was knocked out. What followed was cheering and shouts of anger, disappointment, and frustration. "Honestly I don't think I would do well betting on these matches and I never had any plans to enter. I only came to see what these places are like, to see what Lincoln had to go through."
Lynn said nothing and went back to watch the pentagon for the next fight. For the next 2 hours, they stayed to watch fights. They saw a 15 year old boy take on a Hitmonlee, only for him to give up after five minutes. Watching a 40 year old bodybuilder face a Machoke, he lasted 13 minutes. A young adult dressed as some sort of dancer had to be taken to a hospital after 7 minutes against Lucario. A kid who wore some kind of school uniform went up against a Machop, only to be knocked out in 3 minutes. Finally a man dressed as a martial artist and a biker win their matches against a Sawk and Hariyama respectively. Ronnie Anne enjoyed her time there watching the fights, while occasionally going to get snacks in between fights. Lynn meanwhile watched the fights and relived memories of her and Lincoln coming to these on their journeys together. When Lynn thought they spent enough time there, she told her younger companion they were leaving. Ronnie Anne accepted that and went to go get a snack for the road. After getting soda and going back to her mentor, she saw her talking to an older man before he went back to sit back in the stands.
"Did you know that guy?" She asked curiously.
"No, he was just some wandering trainer," Lynn replied nonchalantly. "He just noticed that you were a beginner trainer and wanted to give me some info about something here in Saffron."
"What was it?" Ronnie Anne asked, her interest now peaked.
"You'll find out tomorrow" she simply replied with a smirk. "Anyways let's head back to the pokecenter and see if Clyde is back." The younger girl nodded in agreement, leaving the underground area. On their walk Ronnie Anne drank her soda while replaying the fights in her head. Lynn meanwhile watched her from the corner of her eyes, having an idea of what was going on in her head. Upon making back to the pokecenter, they were about to head to their reserved room when they spotted their target. He was on the video phone talking to someone. They assumed he was talking to his dads and headed over to say hi. However once they got close enough, they saw it wasn't his dads but a familiar orange head. Both stopped and stared at the back of the boy, with him unaware of the 2 girls behind him.
"Well it's getting late, don't be afraid to call me again" Misty said with a teasing smile and a wink. She had seen the 2 behind him and decided to hang up as a little prank, leaving a confused Clyde from her suddenly ending the call. Thinking it was nothing important he put the phone up and turned around to go back to the room, only to jump back in fear at not expecting to see the 2 people behind him. There was Ronnie Anne looking at him with a teasing smile and Lynn looking at him with a blank expression. After calming his heart back down, he was about to speak when he noticed their expressions. Confused for a second before realizing they must've seen who he was talking to on the phone.
"Wait! It's not what you think! I can explain!" Clyde said in a panic, before he started to explain.
