AN: This might be a bit of a spoiler, Lt. Surge will use a Raichu for every battle. He seems like the type of man who would have multiple Raichus.

Chapter 28: Vermilion City Gym Battle Clyde vs Lt. Surge
[Vermilion City]
The group had made it to Vermilion City for their next gym battle. They were in the pokecenter to book a room and get their Pokemon checked up before going to the gym. Ronnie Anne and Clyde were in the lobby while Lynn was getting her team from Professor Juniper. They watched a rerun of Lincoln's win against Erika in Celadon and talked about their upcoming battle.
"So we're going up against this Lt. Surge and his theme is Electric Pokemon?" Ronnie Anne asked.
"That's right," Clyde replied while nodding. "This is also where Lincoln got his first badge here in Kanto. If our last battle was any indication, then it's going to be a three on three battle."
"So another tough battle" the young girl said with a small huff of exhaustion. "At least you got three Pokemon now and your Blissey is strong. I think I'm going to use Salazzle inserted of Poochyena in this battle."
"Still no luck huh?" The young boy asked, a worried expression on his face. She simply shook her head in negativity, knowing what he was asking. Seeing his companion looking down, he decided to change the subject. "So it's almost Christmas back home right?" This caused her to look at him confused. "I'm just wondering what Lynn is going to do for us on that day."
"I'm taking you guys back home for the holidays" Lynn voice said from in front of them. "Your families obviously want you to come back home for the holiday, so I'm taking you back. I have to go home for the holiday as well, plus I still have my contest with Linc."
"So we'll get to see Lincoln?" Ronnie Anne asked hopefully, with Clyde joining her with a hopeful expression. Both were met with a shake of Lynn's head.
"Nope, not happening" she told them. "I'm thinking of us going back home on the morning of the 24th so you can spend the day with your families. Linc will bring Roxie for Christmas, so he won't be going home until later Christmas Eve. That way Roxie can take on any challengers that day and she only has to close the Gym for one day instead of two." Both younger teens' faces became crestfallen, believing they were going to finally see their old friend. "Alright, enough of those faces. You need to focus on your upcoming matches, you can deal with everything else after. Now come on, let's get to the gym." Both nodded and started to refocus on getting their 3rd badge.
They left the pokecenter and made their way to the gym. When they got there, the 2 younger trainers were unimpressed. It was a simple larger building, it did have the Electric Type Sign above the doors and the sign beside that told people it was the gym. But it looked like any other building around it. The inside was much better in their opinion. After getting through the reception/lobby room, they were taken to the battlefield. It was a large battlefield in the center of the room, with seating on the left and right sides of it, a large sky light window on the roof with the buildings lighting. The walls had soldiers, military vehicles, and scenes of war with Pokemon and soldiers fighting together painted on them. All 3 trainers marveled at the images on the wall.
"Welcome to the Vermilion Gym" a loud booming voice greeted them. They then saw Lt. Surge walking in from one of the other rooms with a smile. He was wearing the same outfit they saw him on tv months ago. "I'm guessing you're here for a gym battle?" Seeing the trio nodded, his smile turned into a smirk. "Well it seems like I got one experienced trainer and two baby trainers for my opponents." The younger trainers glared at him for calling them that. "So who's going first?"
"I will" Clyde shouted, shocking his companions and Lt. Surge smirk growing.
"Well alright then baby boy" Surge taunted. "I'll scan your license and then you know where to stand." While they did what they needed, Lynn and Ronnie Anne went to go sit in the seating area.
"Why do you think Clyde wanted to go first?" Ronnie Anne asked. Lynn just shrugged her shoulders.
Lt. Surge took his place and a referee came from another room and took his place. "This is an official match between Lieutenant Surge of Vermilion City Gym and Clyde McBride from Royal Woods." The referee shouted, their voice loud and clear. "Both trainers will be able to use three Pokemon, with only the challenger being able to switch out Pokemon. The battle is over when all of someone's Pokemon is unable to battle or one forfeits. The match begins now."
"Come out Voltorb!" Surge called out. Out came a Pokemon that looked like a large pokeball.
"Let's do this Milcery!" Clyde called out.
"Start things with Wild Charge!" The gym leader ordered. Voltorb covered itself with electricity and started to roll towards Milcery.
"Dodge it and use Sweet Kiss!" Clyde counter, the Cream Pokemon narrowly dodge the attack. The Ball Pokemon suddenly stopped moving and winced in pain from its own attack, allowing Milcery to hit it with the Sweet Kiss confusing it. "That's enough Milcery, you can return" the younger trainer shouted before recalling his Pokemon and releasing a different one. "Come out Gloom!" The Weed Pokemon then appeared on the battlefield. "While it's confused, hit it with Poison Powder!"
"Voltorb avoid the attack!" Surge ordered, but Voltorb only hurt itself from being confused and then became poisoned from the powder.
"Now use Sunny Day!" Gloom then created a bright orb of light and sent it high above the battlefield.
"Voltorb get in close and use Self-Destruct!" the Ball Pokemon nodded and rolled towards at a fast speed. The Weed Pokemon started to move to stay away from his opponent, but it was faster. Once it was close it started to glow before becoming a large explosion. This caused Gloom to fly across the battlefield, taking massive damage, but able to get back to his feet.
"Voltorb is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Gloom." Clyde didn't celebrate, but instead asked his Pokemon if he was alright. Gloom motioned that he was still able to keep going. Surge meanwhile called back his Voltorb and thanked it.
"Well Clyde did take out one of his Pokemon" Ronnie Anne commented, trying to look at the brighter side.
"Yeah, but at a heavy cost," Lynn added. "Gloom took so much damage, they both might as well have two Pokemon each."
"He could still win right?" The younger Santiago girl asked worryingly.
"Yes, but the battle is just going to get harder from here" the older athlete replied.
"It's never good to sacrifice a fellow soldier…" Surge started to say to his opponent. "...However some soldiers would rather go out in the blaze of battle, then wait to be killed. I'll let you have this battle, because I'm going to win the war. Come out Jolteon!" He threw his next pokeball and out came a yellow spiky 4 legged creature.
"Are you sure you can keep going?" Clyde asked Gloom, to which he told he could. Clyde nodded in acceptance and focused back on the battle. "Okay then, use Poison Powder!" Gloom started to release the familiar powder on the battlefield.
"Avoid it and use Wild Charge!" The Lightning Pokemon easily stayed away from the powder. Its body then became coated with electricity and charged towards Gloom.
"Now Gloom, quickly use Solar Beam!" The Grass Pokemon's pedals glowed brightly, and he shot a bright beam at his opponent. Both attacks met one another creating a big explosion, sending both Pokemon across the battlefield. Jolteon was able to get back up, but Gloom was knocked out.
"Gloom is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Jolteon." Clyde recalled Gloom and thanked him, before getting ready to send out his next Pokemon.
"Come back out Milcery!" He said bring the Cream Pokemon back out. "Let's go with Attract!" Milcery put on a flirty look and winked, sending a red energy heart at Jolteon. The Lightning Pokemon attempted to dodge the attack, but its battered body was too sore to move and was hit by the Attract. Jolteon then started smiling goofy at Milcery with a love struck expression.
"Snap out of it Jolteon and use Thunder!" Surge angrily order. Unfortunately Jolteon didn't listen and continued to stare at his opponent love struck.
"Now use Sweet Kiss followed with Dazzling Gleam!" The Fairy Pokemon nodded and approached her opponent. She kissed him and then hit him with her dazzling pink light. This knocked Jolteon to the ground and brought him out of his love struck state.
"Get some payback with Giga Impact!" The Vermilion Gym Leader shouted. Jolteon got back to his feet and attempted to use his attack, but missed his opponent and hurt himself from not only the confusion, but also the backlash of Giga Impact.
"Try to finish it with Dazzling Gleam and Tackle!" Milcery wasted no time. Quickly using Dazzling Gleam to knock her opponent down, which was followed with the Tackle knocking Jolteon out.
"Jolteon is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Milcery." Clyde let out a sigh of relief, while Milcery danced happily. Ronnie Anne was cheering in the stands, while Lynn was clapping and smiling. Surge called back Jolteon and thanked him.
"I must say, you have a different way of battling" Surge started saying with a small frown, getting his final Pokemon ready. "However a real man would use strength and power to win, not using cheap tactics. Your old friend Lincoln The Other Worldly Trainer knew that, and did that to win his badge against me." Hearing this got both Clyde and Ronnie Anne angry at him for dismissing Clyde's strategy and saying he's nothing like Lincoln. Lynn however lets a small smirk appear on her face, seeing the bigger picture of what's going on. "Any Pokemon you get, you should evolve it as soon as possible. That's my advice for you baby trainers. Now let's get back to the match, you're up Raichu!" Surge's last Pokemon was a Kanto Raichu. "Raichu use Thunder to end that little cream!" The Mouse Pokemon cheeks started to spark, before massive electricity shot out of its body and headed towards Milcery.
"Milcery dodge the attack and use Attract!" Clyde shouted. Milcery attempted to dodge, but was unsuccessful. The Thunder hit its mark and knocked Milcery out instantly.
"Milcery is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Raichu." Clyde recalled and thanked Milcery and got ready to send his last Pokemon. Ronnie Anne started to grind her teeth in frustration and worry at this, while Lynn watched on with an impassive face.
"Alright, you up Blissey" Clyde shouted, sending out the Happiness Pokemon. Blissey let out a happy cry while throwing a couple shadow punches. "Start things off with Bulldoze!" Blissey nodded and started stomping the ground. The stomping created shock waves of dirt and dust in every direction. Raichu was unable to avoid the attack and took the hit, but stayed standing.
"Now that's more like it baby boy" Surge spoke up with a small smile. "However it will take more than that to win, Raichu hit it with a Thunder!" The Electric Pokemon, after getting its bearings from the attack, fired another large blast of electricity. The attack hit, but Blissey took it and shook it off. This caught both Gym Leader and Pokemon off guard. "I didn't expect that," the Gym Leader commented, stunned.
"Now let's hit it with a Drain Punch!" The Happiness Pokemon nodded in agreement. One of her little arms glowed with brown energy and ran towards her opponent. Raichu was still stunned seeing a Pokemon shake off one of its strongest attacks, and didn't attempt to dodge Blissey's attack. The punch sent the Mouse Pokemon back a couple feet and Blissey healed a bit from the attack.
"Let's change it up Raichu, use Giga Impact!" Raichu got back to its feet and its body started glowing and charged at his opponent.
"Let's now use Shadow Ball!" Blissey made the dark shadowy orb between her arms and fired it. The attacks met a foot in front of Blissey, the 2 attack meeting created an explosion. Raichu was blown back while Blissey was pushed and rolled back. The Mouse Pokemon was knocked out and the Happiness Pokemon stood back up after she finished rolling.
"Raichu is unable to battle" the referee announced while holding their hand on Clyde's side up in the air. "Blissey is the winner and Clyde has won the match." Clyde and Blissey started to celebrate, Ronnie Anne stood up cheering, while Lynn was applauding. Surge called back his Raichu and thanked it, before walking towards his younger opponent.
"You certainly put up one heck of a fight Clyde" Surge complimented the young trainer with a large smile. "I still believe you should evolve your Pokemon as soon as possible, but you certainly have the talent to become a strong trainer. So with your win here, I'm proud to award you Thunder Badge." He then handed him a badge with an orange core surrounded with yellow looking almost like a sun.
"Thank you sir" Clyde responded, forgetting all his other feelings for the older man. He took the badge and smiled down at it.
Surge then looked to the 2 females in the stands with a smirk. "So which one of you is next?"
