"Kat! Jesus are you okay?"
"I'm fine, I'm fine!"
Ben holds his head in his hands. "Oh, shit, oh, shit, oh, shit..." He looks up straight at Lilly, seeing her annoyed expression. "I'm sorry."
"Everything's fine, Ben." Carley tried to reassure him.
"Everything is not fine," Lilly said. "We just lost everything..."
"Well, We're lucky as shit to have this RV!" Kenny said from the driver's seat.
"We lost Doug..." I look down at Clementine, seeing her saddened expression.
"He was cool..."
"Kat's head is split open!"
"I'm fine!"
"I'll be right back, Kiddo," I stand and go to the cupboard underneath the sink, I open it to see the small duffel bag I hid.
"What the hell is that?" I hear Lilly ask but I ignore her.
"Here, Katjaa," I set down the duffel bag next to her seat. "There's some meds in there to clean yourself up."
"Thank you."
"Someone in here caused this..."
"Yeah, you did!" I turn around to face Lilly, feeling my anger coming back to me. "Why the hell did you pull the trigger?! Lee had everything under control but you and your itchy trigger finger got Doug killed!"
"Calm down, Elijah," Lee says to me before Kenny added.
"Bandit's have had our numbers for weeks! This was bound to happen."
"This is different," Lilly went on. "Somebody was working with them. Whoever it was was slipping them our meds. They didn't get their last package, so they attacked."
"Calm down back there! That's nuts!"
"Lee found a bag of supplies hidden outside the wall."
The rest fo us look to Lee, seeing him nod. "It's true."
"So, Elijah," Lilly stares daggers at me. "is there something you want to say?"
I roll my eyes. "You really are losing it of you think I'm behind this."
"Then explain that hidden bag of meds you had in here, they didn't just appear out of thin air!"
"Lilly..." Lee warned.
"Most of that is from the dairy, I've snuck out a few times to get what was left and stashed most of it here in case we needed to get away from the Motor Inn."
"Damn, son..."
"You went by yourself?" Carley asked me.
"A likely story. If not you, then Carley, anything you want to add?"
"Now you're just pointing fingers."
"Back the hell off, Lilly."
"You're in no position to make demands, kid."
"And you are?"
"Probably not the best time, Lilly!" Kenny shouted.
"Of not now, when? Look at what just happened!"
"Again, because of you!"
"Carley's trustworthy, Lilly. So is Elijah, they're not traitors."
"Thank you, Lee."
"They can fight their own battles," Lilly retorts. "Unless there's something going on here that implicates the three of you."
"Don't be ridiculous."
"Like, look, maybe we should, uh, vote or something like that," Ben suggested.
"Vote? What?"
"Just, look, Carley's a stand-up gal, and maybe this was all just a mistake."
"We need to look at the facts," said Carley. "Let's calm down, we'll eat and deal with it."
Ben nodded. "Yeah, let's do that."
"We can just deal with this in the morning," I add. "we've already been through enough for one day."
"Just stop waving the finger at everybody," Lee scowled at Lilly. "We know something's going on and we can get to the bottom of it if we keep our heads."
"I know what we found." She retorted, getting more angry.
"I know, Lilly. I know."
"Nobody was stealing anything!"
"Was it all three of you?"
"What?"
I scoff. "Don't implicate me into this, bitch."
"I've seen you three together. Was. It. All. Three of you?!"
"Look, just let me out," Ben crosses his arms. "I didn't do it, but I don't like this' I don't like where it's headed.
"..." Lilly leaned down to him, glaring deep into Ben's soul to get the 'truth' out of him. "Look me in the eyes and tell me you didn't have anything to do with it."
"Lilly, lay off of him."
"I-"
SLAM!
I nearly fell back after the RV had come into contact with something in the road. "What the fuck?!"
"Shit!"
"What's going on up there?" Lilly questioned Kenny.
"I hit something, we gotta stop!"
"Alright, well, we can deal with this now then."
Kenny pulls the RV to the side of the road and comes to a complete stop. "Kenny, is it safe?" asked Lee.
"Should be." He confirmed.
"Everybody out," Lilly demanded.
"Lilly..." Lee warned...but she didn't want to hear it.
"Out."
Everyone minus Katjaa and Duck exits the RV, Clementine tries to follow me but I turn around and stop her. "Just wait in the door, Kiddo."
"Is everything okay?"
"..." I take a glance outside...I don't really know the answer myself, not with how Lilly's paranoia is making her irrational. "...We're about to find out." I left the RV and checked underneath the vehicle, seeing a Walker pinned and struggling to get free. "Kenny, the RV sustained minimal damage but there's a Walker trapped underneath."
Kenny looks under the front bumper. "Goddamn it. Everyone, keep your eyes out," He works on getting that Walker free as the rest of us circle up. Lilly looks at me, Carley, and Ben with hatred rising in her eyes.
"You know what, we shouldn't just kick you out, we should hear what everybody thinks."
"I think you should chill out."
"I'm not gonna take this. You can push Ben around but you can't push me and Elijah around."
"I'm really sorry you feel that way, Carley. But I'm starting to think maybe it was of the three of you." Lilly crosses her arms.
"No!"
"Please, the reason we're on the side of the road is because of you and your itchy trigger finger. Lee was just about to strike a deal with those fucks, now we barely have anything!"
"They were gonna kill us either way-"
"You don't know shit anymore!" I interrupt.
"Gah, this dumb-fuck walker!"
"You okay over there?" Lee asked Kenny.
"Yeah, yeah... Son of a bitch."
"Leave him alone," Carley demanded but Lilly just ignored her.
"You can tell me it was either Carley or Elijah and then everything will be right as rain."
"There's no way it was any of them," Lee says, defending us. "It was somebody else, it could've even been someone sneaking into our camp."
"Well, we already know someone who's been sneaking out," She says, glaring in my direction.
"Stop!" Lee shouted, surprising Lilly. "Don't you fucking dare accuse my boy again, he was looking out for all of us, Clementine most of all."
"...Fine, then. Kenny?"
"I don't know, fuck!" He said, struggling to get the walker free. "Just stop, would ya?!"
"Well, your vote counts for you and Katjaa."
"We don't need all these votes!" Ben shouts in a panicked tone, fearing he may be left on the side of the road to die. "What do I have to do for you to trust me? I'll do anything! I'll...I'll do watches for months!"
"Ha," Lilly scoffed at that. "The hell you will."
"I'll get more food, more food, anything! Just-"
"Stop panicking!" Lee says to the boy. "Seriously, Ben! You need to stop and just take a breath!"
"Do we need any more evidence than this?!" Lilly pointed at the quivering kid.
"Fuck evidence!" said Carley. "Stop treating him like this!"
"Shut up, Carley!" She grunted in anger. "I've heard enough out of you. You too, kid! Kenny! What's it gonna be?"
"Just gimme a damn minute!"
"Ben, you have until that Walker is dealt with to tell me it was either fo them and not you!"
"Stop this. You're torturing him!"
"No!"
"Ben!"
"Just shut the fuck up!"
"Lilly lay off, or else."
"I can't, Lee. You know I can't!"
"Thank you, Lee!" Carley said.
"Please, don't kick me out of the group!"
"Tell me. Now!"
SQUELCH!
I turn to see Kenny has finally pulled the Walker out from underneath the RV. "There, I got him!" He says. I sigh in relief.
"Now that that's over, we can finally take a breath."
"No, we need to get this sorted out now!"
I groan. "You're not helping in the slightest, not like you ever had!"
"I'm the one keeping this group going!"
"You think you're some tough bitch, don't you?" Carley goes off on her, having enough of Lilly's bullshit. "Like nothing can hurt you, but you're just a scared little girl. Get the fuck over it. Take a page from Lee's book and try helping somebody for once. Even Elijah here has more sense than you."
"All you ever do anymore is mope around about your deadbeat dad," I add. "now he's gone. Get that through your fuckin' skull. I did when Sandy died, so should you."
I hear Kenny stomp on the Walker's head, making my head turn back to him. Once the Walker's dead, Kenny approaches us. "Now, what the fucks the prob-"
"Elijah!"
BANG!
My ears start ringing... What the hell just happened? I pick myself up from the ground, seeing... "...Carley?"
Her body lies on the ground...with a hole in her head. I look up from my friend's corpse, seeing Lilly towering over me...with smoke coming out of the barrel of her pistol. She glances down at me and I see that look in her eyes...the intent to kill. Just as soon as she was about to point her gun at me, Lee grabbed her by the wrist and slammed Lilly against the RV.
"Drop it!" He ordered and Lilly let her pistol fall from her hand.
"Holy fuck..."
...That's twice now.
"Kenny, what's happening?!" Katjaa calls from inside the RV.
"Keep Duck away from the windows! Jesus Christ!" Kenny helped me to my feet before he turned to Lee. "Get in! We're leaving this crazy bitch!"
"They can't be trusted, Lee," Lilly pleaded. "I swear. Please."
"...What are we gonna do with her?" Ben asked.
"Leave her for the Walkers," Kenny answered.
"..." Lee releases Lilly. "You're not coming with us."
"I'll die out here..." She begged as Lee picked up her pistol.
"I don't care."
"You're a murderer, Lilly! We can't have you with us!"
"I'm a murderer?! You've had Lee with you this whole time!"
"I don't care what he did before!"
Lilly's eyes widen in shock. "You know?!"
"Yeah, he told me! I don't give a shit! If we keep you with us, how long until you get me?!"
"I was trying to protect all of-" Lilly falls to the ground...right after I punch her in the face. My sickle is back in the RV so I grab the next best thing on me to use. I rip off the gold pendant around my neck... As I lean down to Lilly and grab her by the throat, I see the earlier killer look in her eyes slowly fade into the one feeling I've never seen her experience.
Fear...
I direct the pendant directly to her jugular vein, one swift motion and she'll bleed out like a pig. Before I could finish the job, I felt a hand on my shoulder. Lee looks me in the eye, slowly shaking his head.
"...She killed Carley...she got Doug killed!"
"I know..."
"..." I want to do it. After everything she caused today, she needs to pay for it...
I sigh, releasing Lilly's throat and putting the pendant back on around my neck. I'll spare her life...knowing that she'll die having nothing left. Before I get back in the RV, I kneel back down to her and look deep within her soul. I may not kill her, but I'm going to make sure she knows...
"Your life will be consumed by absolute loss... Then and only then will you understand what you've done. Your father was never going to survive this world...and I don't mean that because of his condition. All you ever did was justify everything he's done. You will die like the worthless dog that he was. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but you will die just like he did. Alone, afraid, and a hindrance to others."
Now that I feel satisfied, I get inside the RV. Kenny starts the vehicle and we soon continue on. I look out the back window and I see Lilly running into the woods as a Walker appeared.
"Lee, Elijah, a word, please?" Katjaa calls us to the front of the RV.
Both of us go to her to see what she wants. "What's up?"
Lee asked as I saw Duck clinging to his mother, but...there's something off about him. "Is Duck feeling okay?"
"..." Katjaa answered by lifting his shirt, revealing...a bite mark on his abdomen.
"Oh, God..." My heart sinks. First Doug, then Carley, and now...
"What the fuck?"
"Happened during the raid," Kennt said flatly as he kept his eyes on the road.
"What's the plan?" asked Lee. "We've never had a bite victim in the group before."
"I'm going to keep an eye on him," Kajaa answered. "and see what I can do...from a medical perspective." So she says, but she doesn't sound so sure of herself.
"We keep the same plan unless something changes. East."
"Guys..."
"He'll turn..."
"What else is there to do?" Katjaa's voice rose. "We thought you two should know."
Kenny looks back at us with a solemn expression on his face. "Important to stay honest with each other."
"Anyway, if you two could tell Clementine, we would appreciate it."
Lee and I nod and go back to where Clementine is sitting, she sits between us and nuzzles her head onto Lee's chest, I take her hand and give it a reassuring squeeze. This won't be easy for her to hear, but she needs to know the truth.
"...Duck is bitten."
The little one looks up to Lee. "Huh?"
"He got bit by a Walker trying to escape the Motor Inn," I finish.
"I... don't feel good."
I'm sorry, Clem. You should be the last person to be going through this.
"What about Carley?" She asked.
"...Gone. But won't come back," Lee stated.
"Because she was shot in the head..."
"That's right. It's horrible..."
"Yeah, it is."
"I'm sorry, Lee," I say. "I know...well, I know that you two meant a lot to each other."
"Yeah... But I'm glad I still have you two."
"Me too."
"Yeah, same here, Lee."
"Sandra and I heard you outside the treehouse that day...and thought about dropping a hammer on your head."
"What? Why?" Lee asked, almost laughing.
"In case you were up to no good. Before you there was this other guy, he was yelling and trying to get into my house. He wanted to take the TV and tried to break the glass door with a rock. Then some walkers came and scared him away."
"...The door was open."
"He was a dumbass," I say, laughing at the memory. If only...Sandy was here to enjoy it with us. But there's no use in dwelling on that horrible fact now, I have to keep moving forward and keep my promise.
Lee...during the night...
Lee listens to the sound of the RV as Clementine falls asleep on him, Elijah is drifting off to sleep as well. After a few more moments of silence, the little one lets out a small groan. Lee looks down at her in concern, she looks up to him...and her face is completely torn apart.
"RAHH!"
"Clem!" She attacks Lee and he tries to push her away from him. "Fuck! What happened?! Elijah! Help!"
"...Uhhhgh." The young man groaned. When he glanced at Lee...his face was disfigured as well. "RAHH!" He attacks Lee...trying to bite his neck.
"NO!"
Lee eye's jolt awake, the morning sun blinding him. Once reality finally settles back in, he sees Clementine and Elijah asleep next to him. He sighs in relief knowing that what he saw was only a nightmare.
"We got something up ahead," Kenny called from the driver's seat. Lee gets up and sets Clementine's head on Elijah's lap. He goes up to the front of the RV, seeing what's blocking the road through the front windshield. "Damn it, now we gotta deal with this."
Elijah
I feel myself waking up thanks to a small hand shaking my shoulder. "Elijah, wake up." I'm met with Clementine's solemn expression as my eyes flutter open. "We're leaving now."
I rub the last of my sleepiness from my eyes. Once my vision is finally clear, I see the others piling out of the RV. I yawn before I grab my backpack and follow Clem out of the RV. Outside, I see why we stopped. There's a freighter train that's been stopped in the middle of the road, blocking our way. Upon further inspection, the boxcars behind the first one have been knocked off the tracks.
Damn, wonder what happened here.
"Is there any way to get around it?" Ben asked Kenny.
"Doesn't look like it. On foot, maybe. Can't really afford to do that now."
"This seems like a safe area," said Lee. "All this brush will stop anything from creeping up on us."
"I guess we should have a look at this train," I suggest.
"Yeah," Ben agrees with me. "We could have a look around."
"Everyone else, relax," Lee says to the others as they settle down on some nearby logs. "Clem, stay close to Kenny and Kat, okay?"
"Lee," Katjaa speaks up. "if you three come across anything to drink, if there's a dining car or something, I think Duck's a bit dehydrated."
"It's a freighter, Hon," Kenny looks at us. "Be careful in there."
"What, you think there might be something dangerous inside of an abandoned locomotive? Hadn't crossed my mind."
I chuckle. "I'd be surprised if there wasn't anything in there at this point." Ben, Lee, and I head for the first boxcar, opening it and climbing inside. There's a mattress, a chair, and other items scattered across the floor. "Looks like someone was living in here."
"Yeah," Lee agreed with my observation.
"Shit. Think they're gone?"
"I hope so," Lee gave Ben an answer. "but this looks recently used. You two be on the lookout and have your guard up."
I nod. "Got it," I take another look around, and I see a water bottle placed on a cardboard box. I take it and shake the bottle, it still has plenty. I put it in my backpack so I can give it to Duck. "You guys find anything?"
I turn to see Lee holding a clipboard. "I got a map of where the train goes. I think these tracks might lead to the coast. Route 27, Savannah..."
"That's where Kenny's got us going," I say. "And...where Clem's parents could still be."
We finish looking around the boxcar and now we move on to the locomotive itself. Lee leads on until we reach the cab door. "Shit," He says. I look past him, seeing what appears to be a Walker with its back turned. "We got one. Walker. Sitting in the chair."
"Here," I hand Lee my sickle and he opens the cab door. Just as he was about to strike the Walker, it fell over...already dead. I sigh in relief.
"Suppose we oughta look him over," Lee suggested as he handed me back my weapon.
Ben agrees silently as Lee drags the dead man off the chair. When it slams on the floor, the three of us notice the noticeably missing chunk of his head. I look at the front glass of the cab, seeing the bloody and cracked hole.
"Damn..."
"I don't think this guy came back."
"Christ..." Lee takes a closer look at the console, seeing an orange button flashing. "That light is blinking."
"Push it!"
"What?!"
"Push it?"
"Why not?"
"Are you fucking serious?"
"You can't be for real, Ben."
"Here, look," He goes ahead and pushes the button. The train squeals from outside. "It's just the brakes."
"Okay, I'll give you that one."
I chuckle. "I'll be damned."
"This fucker works?" Kenny joins us in the cab.
"Seems like it."
Kenny sits in the engineer's seat. "I'll be fucked. How the hell do we get movin'?"
"I don't know," Lee crosses his arms and smirks at Ben. "ask Mister Amtrak over here."
Ben shook his head. "No clue," He starts dragging the body away. I decide to help him and pick up the corpse by his legs.
We get to the front of the train and toss the body off to the side. We jump down and-
"RAAAAGGHH!"
"AHH!"
"CONO!"
Ben and I are met with a trapped walker in a wrecked car beside the train. I sigh in relief knowing that it can't get to us thanks to the seatbelt. But then again, I don't think we should leave it here. I open the driver's side door.
"What are you doing?"
"..." I slam the door a few times, seeing that it won't shut completely. "I got an idea." Using my sickle, I cut the seatbelt keeping that kept the walker from getting out. It crawls to the driver's side and as soon as it pokes its rotting head out...
SLAM!
SQUELCH!
"Jesus..."
"Well, at least he ain't a problem," I say as I look at Ben. "Go check on the others, I'm gonna see what's left in this car."
Ben leaves as I pull the dead Walker out of the car and search through it. I find...a box of animal crackers in the foot of the passenger side. I know I managed to get plenty of stuff from the St. Johns, but who knows how long it'll last. I take the box before I make my way to the others.
"Hey, Katjaa," She looked up at me as she still held Duck in her arms. "I found some water for Duck and some animal crackers too."
She smiles as she takes the bottle and box from me. "Thank you, Elijah, that's very thoughtful," I was about to turn away but Katjaa spoke up again. "He isn't fussy, you know?"
"Huh?"
"Most kids, they're really fussy about what they'll eat. Hate vegetables, that kind of thing."
"Not Duck though?
"No," She smiled. "The most trouble I ever have is making him use a fork. Thank you, Elijah."
"It's no problem."
"Elijah!" I turned my attention back to the train and saw Lee call to me from the cab. "We could use your help up here."
"On my way," I answer him, but I check on Clementine before I go back to the train. "Hey, Kiddo. You holding up okay out here?"
"..." She looks over at Duck with a sorrowful expression. Clementine should know as well as the rest of us...that boy is not gonna make it. "I don't think Duck feels good."
"I know, Clem. I know." I pat her head before I climb up to the train. Inside the main cab, Kenny sits in the engineer's chair as Lee works on a few buttons and switches on the console. "What's up?"
"We're trying to get this train up and runnin'."
I look at Kenny with an eyebrow raised. "Seriously?"
"This thing could take us all the way to Savannah," said Lee.
"So, what's the problem?"
"Well, Lee got the dash lit up thanks to a manual and some pencil rubbin', or whatever. Now we just need to figure out the rest."
"Here," Lee hands me a paper pad, showing the instructions on how to get the train up and running. The way the pencil markings take up the entire page reminds me of Clementine's leaf-rubbing pictures she was working on back at the Motor Inn. "We did everything up until the last one."
Lee points out the last picture of the instructions, it looks light the prime ignition. "I don't think you'll find that in here," I remember a few doors on the side of the train, maybe we could find it in there. I leave the cab and find the four doors on the side of the train, one of these has to be the engine compartment. Lee follows me and starts opening doors along with me.
"Oh, shit..."
Lee's surprised words brought my attention to him. He opened one of the doors and found a few tools hanging from them. Looks like there's a monkey wrench, a spanner, and a railroad spike remover.
"You should probably hand on to one of those, a tool could be useful for more than just fixin' things," I suggest.
Lee nods and takes the monkey wrench, I open another one of the doors, finding some marked lights above a prime switch. Yes! I take another look at the instructions, I just have to turn it left and then right to start the engine. I turn the ignition to the left and a green light marked 'low oil' lights up for a second, I then turn it right and the engine comes to life.
"Nice work!"
"Hell fucking yeah!"
Kenny soon joins us with our shared excitement. "Holy shit, we're golden!"
"Yeah we are," Lee agreed...but my mind goes back to a more important matter that we have to get to eventually.
"What about Duck?"
"What about him?" Kenny asked almost defensively.
"Kenny," Lee tried to see reason. "he's right. It's something we're gonna have to deal with."
"Did you two not hear Kat? We don't know shit, guys. Let's fucking enjoy this," Lee and I share a knowing glance. Kenny is in denial... "Come on, let's see if she'll move." We follow him into the cab and he sits down, he uses the throttle and the train moves forward, only to stop and nearly make me and Lee fall over. "Damn it. Of course, we're still attached. Could y'all go find out where we're stuck, and get us...unstuck?"
"Yeah."
"We're on it, Kenny."
Lee and I head to the boxcar, eventually finding ourselves on the opposite side. Behind it, we find exactly what's keeping the train from moving. All we need to do is unhook the coupler pin and we're good to go. Lee takes his monkey wrench and pries the coupler free.
"There."
"Hey, Kenny!" I shout. "We're loose!"
With that out of the way, Lee and I climb back into the boxcar to get back to the others on the other side. But there was someone waiting for us inside.
"You two touch any of my stuff?" An old man covered in grime asked us.
"..." Looks like we found who was living in here.
"I took the map of the train routes," Lee answers him.
"That's fine, y'all can have that."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I got 'em all right up here," He pointed to his head. "What about you, boy? You take anything?"
"...Just some water."
"Well, I got plenty, and y'all are probably thirsty. Name's Chuck. Charles, if you're fancy."
"Lee."
"Elijah."
"That your crew outside?" He asked us.
"Yeah."
"And the guy up in the cab?"
I nodded. "Him too."
"I saw you two walking through here...thought about scaring the pants off of you."
"What?"
"Huh?"
"But I couldn't force myself to do it."
"...You're still kinda freaking me out."
"Yeah," I add.
"Train folk'll do that," He said with a smirk. "Already met everyone outside; they all warmed to me right quick in direct sunlight."
Lee and I look at each other, feeling that this guy is not gonna be a problem...at least, not yet. The three of us leave the boxcar and go to the others. The new guy we now know as Chuck sits on a log and grabs... A guitar?
"You guys met Chuck!" Clementine runs over to us.
"Yeah."
"I guess we did," So he wasn't lying.
"It's so nice to meet someone normal for a change," Katjaa added.
"He gave us candy. Ben too!"
Lee and I look over to Ben who is chowing down on a candy bar, he stops when he realizes that we are staring. That guy had candy, the hell?
"Welcome," Lee said to the old man.
He nodded. "Thank ya."
"You met Kenny?" I ask.
"Sure did. Man shares my love of the road."
"That's for sure."
"No kidding."
"Cough! Cough!" Duck starts having a coughing fit, bringing concern to not only us but the new guy too.
"I'm awful sorry your son's not feeling good."
Katjaa gratefully smiled. "I appreciate your concern."
"Well, with a little TLC, I'm sure he'll be fit as a fiddle in no time. And I can offer whatever I got, although it ain't much."
"Thank you," She says as I see Kenny join us again. "We'd like to do the same."
"So, that's it? We're cut loose?" Kenny asked me and Lee.
"Seems that way, yeah."
"Great," He looks to the rest of the group. "We don't got much left, so gather whatever you got. Let's go." Everyone grabs their things and I grab the duffel bag of the supplies I scavenged and go up to the boxcar and set it inside. "Want a ride?" I hear Kenny ask Chuck.
"Well, it sounds like you're taking my home," He said.
"That's a yes, then."
"Haven't found anything better for keeping the creepy crawlies out than that boxcar," Chuck remarked before he hopped inside the boxcar.
I approach Lee and Kenny, Clem walks up to Lee with a sad look on her face. "Duck's sick."
"Get on the train, Clementine," Kenny said more demanding than he probably intended.
"He is getting sicker," Katjaa added as I helped Clem onto the boxcar.
"Let me look at him," Kenny takes a step closer to examine his son...bit he takes a step back as he realizes how pale and sickly he looks.
"We can't ignore this," Lee said.
"He's right," I add. "This is happening."
"Ain't shit happening. And if it were, what can we do here? We get on the train and we find something better. That is the plan."
"I think Lee and Elijah just want to talk it through."
"It's talked through! Get on, Kat. I'll be up front. I don't want to hear any nonsense until we get where we're goin'."
Kenny climbs onto the engine car and I assist Katjaa and Duck into the boxcar. Soon, the train starts moving and I sit on the edge, my legs dangling out as I see the RV get further and further away. As the train moves along the tracks, every possible scenario runs in my head of what will happen in the next few hours. All of them...lead to one irrefutable fact.
...One of us will have to put down Duck.
