The Emerald Demon
"Tell me something, my friend... You ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?"
- Jack Napier, AKA Joker, Batman (1989)
It was All Hallows Eve in Japan, and everyone was preparing for the festivities, particularly the kids who were buzzing with excitement for some trick-or-treating. For the students of Class 1-A, what better way to celebrate the holiday than a costume party at Momo's house? Everyone had their own unique costume: Momo redesigned herself as a scientist, Bakugo unleashed his rage as Asura from Asura's Wrath, Kirishima went full old-school by dressing as a traditional Oni, Mina styled herself as Android 21 from Dragon Ball, Tsuyu took on the haunting visage of Kayako Saeki from The Grudge, Sero donned the mantle of Spider-Man, Mineta- fittingly enough- went dressed as a bunch of grapes, Jiro embraced a full gothic look, and Kaminari went for a classic look as Frankenstein's monster.
The atmosphere was truly delightful, filled with food, drinks, and plenty of cheer. But for one Ochaco Uraraka, the party lacked a certain spark. This was mainly because of the absence of one of their number. The one in question being a certain greenette who just so happens to be her boyfriend. Yes, she and Izuku Midoriya had been dating for a full month now, which came as no surprise to the rest of Class see the two had eyes for each other, so when they finally made it official, the response was a collective "About damn time!"
Ochaco herself was dressed as a witch for her Halloween costume. Her outfit was an orange and black dress complimented with a classical witch hat and bat-shaped earrings. As Ochaco stood at the balcony, she couldn't help but wonder where Izuku was. It wasn't like him to be late, and he would've called if something came up. She truly hoped nothing happened to him, especially after a certain incident that happened when the two of them went to get their Halloween costumes. Earlier today, the two went to the local costume store for their Halloween costumes. Ochaco would dress up as a witch and Izuku would dress up as her pet cat. After getting their costumes, the rather eccentric storeowner offered Ochaco a red spell book to compliment her witch costume, claiming it to be an authentic spell book.
Ochaco and Izuku were naturally skeptical about this claim, but the storeowner insisted, even urging them to try it themselves if they didn't believe him. Despite her skepticism, Ochaco felt a spark of curiosity. So she opened the spell book and read one of the spells aloud...
...and that's when things got weird.
The book began radiating a crimson light and grew hot in Ochaco's hands, causing her to throw the book to the ground as crimson smoke and flashes of black lightning erupted from the book. The smoke then took on a humanoid shape with glowing golden eyes before lunging at Ochaco. Ever the stalwart hero, Izuku leapt into action and pushed Ochaco out of the way, which unfortunately led to him getting engulfed by the smoke. After what felt like an eternity of agonizing moments, the smoke cleared and Izuku was left surprisingly unscathed. The two went see Recovery Girl and the doctors for a more thorough examination, but they could find nothing amiss so they considered the matter closed.
Ochaco gazed up at the night sky, taking in the beauty of the pale moon and the numerous stars surrounding it. Unfortunately, she was so captivated by the scenery that she failed to notice a hand had grasped her shoulder. Her Gunhead Martial Arts training immediately kicked in and Ochaco rounded on her potential attacker, only to take a sigh of relief when she found it was merely Izuku. "Jesus, Deku, thanks for the heart attack!" Ochaco exclaimed, putting a hand over her heart to help calm her breathing as relief washed over her. "Taking a bit of a risk, don't you think? Sneaking up on a girl with martial art skills? I could've thrown you clean off this balcony!"
Izuku chuckled. "Well, at least I could die knowing my last sight on this earth was the face of a beautiful woman." he said, a mischievous smirk dancing upon his lips. Ochaco's eyes widened as a blush colored her cheeks red at the surprisingly flirtatious statement, something she never thought she'd hear from Izuku of all people. Not that she minded, of course. Overcoming her initial shock, she took a closer look at Izuku's costume, which consisted of a white shirt, a red tie, and a black vest with matching black gloves, pants, and shoes. The most striking features, however, were the curved crimson horns protruding from the sides of his head and the black, spaded tail extending from behind him.
"Wait a second..." Ochaco said. "I thought you were going to dress up as a cat?"
"I was, but then I had a change of heart." Izuku replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "Thought I'd opt for something a touch more...sophisticated. So what do you think?"
"It's nice and all." Ochaco said. "But I thought the cat costume was adorable. Would've been a perfect match my witch outfit. You know, the witch and her pet cat?"
"Well think of it this way: Instead of a pet cat, you now have a demonic familiar here to fulfill all your deepest desires." Izuku replied with a dramatic bow. "Quite the upgrade, wouldn't you agree?"
"Huh. Can't argue with that logic." Ochaco said as Izuku walked next to her, leaning on the railing. "So, enjoying the party so far?" Izuku asked.
"Yeah, it's been a blast!" Ochaco replied. "But where have you been? You almost missed most of it."
"Sorry about that." Izuku said. "I had to help my neighbor with something and I lost track of time. Still, Momo definitely can throw a party." Izuku then fell silent, gazing up at the full moon. He remained quiet for quite a while, seemingly mesmerized by its soft glow. "Deku..?" Ochako asked, attempting to recapture his attention.
"Say, Occhan…?" Izuku asked, still gazing up at the moon. "Tell me, have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight?"
"I'm sorry, what?" Ochako asked, blinking a few times. The question caught Ochaco off guard, and the nickname even moreso. Most of the time, he referred to her by her surname. The only person he ever referred to by a nickname was his childhood friend Bakugo, who he called "Kacchan".
"Just a little poem I read once." Izuku said as he moved closer to Ochaco. "Have you ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight? Where the stars are dim and the air is chill, and the world is cloaked in night?" Once close enough to Ochaco, Izuku outstretched his hand, a silent invitation for her to join this metaphorical dance. There was a gleam in his eyes and an almost seductive smile on his face. For a moment, Ochaco hesitated, unsure of what to make of this. Cautiously, she extended her hand and allowed Izuku to wrap an arm around her waist, pulling her close as the two began their slow, graceful waltz. Once again, Ochaco was caught off guard by the brazen act, her cheeks flushing a brilliant shade of red at the feeling of their bodies being so close together.
"Have you felt the thrill of danger as you moved to his dark beat?" Izuku continued as they swayed together. "And let his fiery passion sweep you off your feet?" He then twirled Ochaco around. "The devil wears a tempting smile and his eyes are filled with fire. And when you dance with him, my friend, you'll feel a burning desire." After a few twirls, he suddenly pulled Ochaco back into his embrace, this time with her back against his chest. Ochaco could feel the heat emanating from his body. "But heed my warning, little one," he whispered in her ear in a low, sensual tone that sent a chill down Ochaco's spine. "For the devil's dance is wild. And once you start to sway with him, you may never be beguiled."
Izuku then turned Ochaco around so she was facing him, staring deep into her auburn eyes. "So if you feel his call tonight and hear his seductive tune, remember what you're risking and be careful what you do." With a final, dramatic dip, he added. "For dancing with the devil is a dangerous game to play. And once you're in his grasp, my friend, you may never... break away."
"W-Wow, Deku..." Ochaco said, a bit breathless from the dance. "Never knew you were into poetry."
"Well, it seemed fitting for the occasion." Izuku said as he helped her to her feet, placing his hands on Ochaco's shoulders as he stared directly into her auburn eyes. "This night, where we take on different personas, putting on masks to hide our true selves." He gently caressed Ochaco's cheek with the back of his hand, causing her body to tense up at his touch. "Or... perhaps it's the opposite. A chance to shed our societal roles and embrace our true nature... if but for a fleeting moment."
"Okay... that's strangely philosophical." Ochaco replied, feeling another shiver run down her spine at the intensity in Izuku's voice. And there was something in his gaze she couldn't quite place. Was it a trick of the light or were his usually emerald green eyes glowing gold for a second?
Izuku let out a small laugh. "Just some food for thought." His hand now traced her ear, sending tingles down her neck when he suddenly pulled a black envelope seemingly out of thin air. A sleight-of-hand trick? He leaned in close to whisper in her ear again. "For your eyes only," he said as he handed her the envelope, planting a quick kiss on her cheek. With a nonchalant wave, he walked away with his hands in his pockets, leaving a thoroughly confused Ochaco alone on the balcony.
Ochaco watched as Izuku sauntered off, feeling the heat rise in her cheeks and spread throughout her entire face. Everything about this scenario was so... bizarre. First, instead of dressing up as a cat like they had planned, Izuku showed up as a devil. Not that it was particularly odd, but then there was his whole demeanor. Gone was the timid and awkward boy she knew and loved. In his place was a bold and confident man, qualities rarely seen outside of intense battles. To say nothing of the flirtatious way he spoke. It was as if he had become a different person altogether.
After snapping out of her daze, Ochaco opened the envelope and read the letter:
"The party's nice and all, but I'd much rather have you all to myself. You are thus cordially invited to a sleepover at my apartment. Mom will be out with friends for the night, so it'll be just the two of us. We could cozy up and watch some movies together, and I have quite the surprise in store for you. I hope to see you there."
With love, Deku.
While this seemed like a normal invitation, Ochaco couldn't shake the nagging sensation in the back of her mind that something was off. Still, this was Izuku. He has never given her a reason to distrust him before. And a sleepover between friends should be harmless right?
...Right?
I hope I'm doing a good job with Devil Deku here. I'm trying to make him sound sensual and seductive without coming off as too sleazy or predatory. The main event happens next chapter, so stay tuned.
