Chapter 4

Amity and Luz headed to the adoption agency while Eda stayed with her new grandchildren. "I'll watch over them while you get that stuff straightened out," she said.

"Okay," Luz said before looking at the girls. "Be good for Grandma Eda."

"We shouldn't be gone long," Amity said.

Solana and Mila nodded. "We'll be good," the former promised.

Now, the two young women entered the agency, meeting up with the lady Amity had spoken to earlier. "I took a look into the two children in question and found this," the lady said, handing them a file. "Apparently, Mila and Solana were kept away from families looking to adopt and they apparently ran away a few months ago. The person tending to the orphanage never filed a missing child report."

"Did they just not care?" Luz asked, her heart aching for the two girls.

"Apparently so," the adoption lady said sadly. "I've spoken to Child Services and they will be coming to inspect your home and such to be sure the two girls are well cared for, but they did agree that you could adopt the two children right away. Apparently, with Miss Camilla being in our systems as she had looked into adoption sometime ago before you were born, Luz, it was a easy background check on you and Amity."

"So...we can adopt them right now and they can stay with us?" Amity asked. "What will Child Services be looking for in their inspection?"

"They will want to make sure the kids are in a clean, healthy environment and that they are given regular meals," the adoption lady said.

"Oh, they're going to get three meals a day and plenty of snacks," Luz said firmly. "My girls will not go hungry under my roof."

Amity smiled. "We can set up two of the spare rooms for them," she said. "Even if they didn't mind sharing a room, they should still have their own space."

"We'll get them queen-sized beds then," Luz said. "And lots of toys."

"You know Mama Eda and Mama Camilla will spoil those girls too," the purple-haired woman said, smiling.

"They deserve it," the brown-haired woman said. "Those two have been through so much. Giving them what they need and making sure that they are allowed to play and be kids will prove to them that they can trust us as their moms and that we won't hurt them."

The adoption lady smiled. "It's good to see you two are so passionate about giving these two a good home," she said before handing them documents. "Please sign the bottom where I've marked it on these papers."

The two did so immediately and the adoption lady motioned them to follow her. "You two are in luck that one of the judges and the records keeper are here right now," she said. "He usually doesn't grant adoptions when he's not in the courtroom, but I think he'll make an exception in this case."

The judge indeed did agree to make an exception. "I've been hearing a lot about these two girls from the police and the situation they had been in before they escaped," he said. "While the owner of the orphanage is now facing charges, the police were searching for the two girls. Are they alright?"

"Physically, yes," Amity said. "They are a bit thin, but that's understandable since they were sneaking food from our home while they were hiding in the basement."

"They were in your basement?" The judge asked.

"And we had no idea," Luz said. "We had just moved into the house almost a couple months ago and have been working on doing the décor the way we'd like."

"And the girls went missing a month ago," the adoption lady said.

"We really had no idea until I found them completely by chance yesterday," Amity admitted. "They were scared of me at first, but after I promised they wouldn't be hurt and that they could get cleaned up and have some real food, they reluctantly agreed. This morning, they are less wary, but still a bit shy."

"Sounds like you two are doing everything right," the judge said. "Where did they sleep last night?"

"We have a couch that converts to a bed and they slept there last night, but we are looking into getting them beds and their own rooms too," Luz said.

"We have a couple spare rooms that we have begun to plan to turn into the girls' rooms. We just have to make a few calls about the furniture and of course get supplies to paint the rooms and toys and all," Amity said.

The judge nodded and signed the adoption papers. "Go get these notorized and you'll be all set," he said.

Luz and Amity quickly went to the courthouse and the papers were notorized. "Congratulations on the adoption," the gentleman helping them said.

After they left the courthouse, Luz scooped Amity up in a hug, spinning her around while laughing happily. "We did it, Sweet Potato!" She cheered.

Amity laughed as she held onto Luz. "Yes, we did, Batata," the purple-haired woman said, hugging her partner. "Ready to go tell the girls?"

"And Eda too," Luz said. "Who should we tell next after Eda?"

"Mama Camilla and my dad," Amity said instantly. "Then we can tell King, Hooty, Lilith, and our friends."

"Okay," the brown-haired woman said. "Though, maybe do a few at a time? We don't want to overwhelm the girls."

"True," her partner said. "Okay, so we tell Eda and Mama Camilla right now. Then I'll call my dad and tell him so that he can come visit us and meet the girls."

"Then we'll call the others too," Luz agreed. "Oh! Gotta tell Vee too. She'll be thrilled to be an aunt."

They both returned home and found the heart-warming site of Solana and Mila cuddling into Eda's sides as she read them a story. Seeing the two women, Eda smiled and looked at the girls. "Your moms are home," she said.

Mila and Solana looked up and their faces shone with hope, to which Luz and Amity smiled. "You girls are officially our daughters," the latter said.

"For real?" Mila asked, going up to them. "You promise?"

"We promise, mija," Luz said, gently ruffling the young girl's hair.

Eda smiled and gently poked Solana's sides to make her giggle. "See? Didn't Grandma Eda tell you that you girls would be adopted when your moms got back?" She asked teasingly.

Amity chuckled and Solana, escaping her grandma's playful grasp, ran up to her and hugged her. "We can call you Mom?" She asked but then looked worried. "But...how do we call you both Mom?"

"How about you call Amity 'Mom' and you call me 'Mama'?" Luz suggested.

Mila grinned. "Mommy and Mama," she said. "I like that."

Solana nodded. "Me too," she said.

Just then, a knock came at the door and Eda answered it to find Camilla and Vee. "Camilla! Vee!" She said, pulling them both into a hug.

"Good to see you too, Eda," Camilla said, smiling at the woman she saw as a sister. "Are the girls home?"

"They are," Eda said. "In the living room."

She led them there. "Luz. Amity, you've got visitors," she said, revealing it was Camilla and Vee.

"Mama!" Luz said joyously, hugging her. "We were just about to call you and Vee."

"How did you know we were going to call you two?" Amity asked, hugging Camilla.

"I guess you could say a mother's intuition," Camilla said.

Vee noticed the two little girls looking at them in curiosity, but they also hid behind Eda. "Who are those two?" She asked.

Luz smiled. "Mom. Vee, Amity and I would like you to meet Mila and Solana," she said.

"Our new daughters," Amity said as she gestured to each girl as Luz introduced them.

Camilla gasped in surprise. "I'm an abuela?" She asked.

"Sí, Mama," Luz replied.

"What's an abuela?" Solana asked.

"It means 'Grandma'," Amity replied.

"Does this mean I'm an aunt?" Vee asked excitedly.

"Yes," Luz replied.

Camilla smiled and looked at the two girls who were looking up at her with some uncertainty. "It's alright, mijas," she said gently.

Eda smiled. "Go on," she encouraged her granddaughters gently.

Both girls came out from hiding and went up to Camilla, who hugged them both gently. "I come to visit my daughters and get the wonderful surprise of meeting my granddaughters," she said with a smile.

Solana and Mila relaxed and hugged Camilla. "We have two grandmas," Mila said happily.

"And two moms and an aunt," Solana said.

"Oh, trust me, the family is big," Amity said. "But you can meet them a bit later."

The two young girls smiled, feeling happy to finally have a family.

For those wondering, this story mostly stays in the human realm, but will involve the family going to the Boiling Isles too. And in answer to one reviewer, you are surprisingly right on the nose that she will be the main antagonist in this story. She'll appear soon in the story.
