Chapter 5
At Camilla's house, Luz finished her otter costume and put it on. "Aren't I otterly adorable?" She asked Amity.
The purple-haired woman burst out laughing at that, surprised that the brown-haired woman had made a pun. "You are too much sometimes, Batata," she said, recovering from her laughing fit.
Mila giggled before looking at Amity. "What will you dress up as, Mommy?" She asked.
Smiling, Amity went and got her costume, which was a ninja. She went behind the changing curtain and put it on, coming out a moment later. "How do I look?" She asked.
"Stealthy," Luz said. "I like it."
Solana grinned before looking thoughtful. "I want to be a kitty cat," she said.
"That's a great choice," Amity said, pulling out a cat costume.
"Can I be a pumpkin?" Mila asked hopefully.
"Sure, sweetie," Luz said, pulling out a pumpkin costume.
The family gathered for a picture and Camilla, dressed as a wizard, smiled. "Oh, you four look so adorable," she said.
Vee, dressed as a pirate, came in with the candy to hand out to trick-or-treaters and four pumpkin candy buckets colored pink, green, blue, and purple. "I wasn't sure what colors you kids would want, so I grabbed one of each," she said to her nieces.
"Pink!" Mila said instantly.
"Green," Solana said.
Vee handed them their treat buckets. "Be careful going up to dark homes and let your moms look at the candy before you eat it," she said.
"Why?" Mila asked.
"To make sure you don't get any unwrapped candy or candy that has been tampered with to make you sick," Camilla said.
"It's just a precaution," Luz said reassuringly. "We just want you two to be safe."
"What do dark houses mean?" Solana asked.
"It usually means there's no candy at that house to give out," Amity said. "Don't worry, we'll look for porches that are lit up with lights."
"Those mean that there is candy at the house. Also, remember to say 'thank you' after you are given the candy," Luz said.
"Okay," Mila said.
"And stick by your moms at all times," Camilla said. "And look both ways before crossing streets."
"We will," Solana said.
Amity smiled. "Alright, let's go," she said. "We've got our phones and we should be back in an hour or so."
"Have fun!" Vee said.
"And be careful," Camilla said, smiling.
Solana and Mila held hands as they walked out of the house with their moms behind them. "We've never been trick-or-treating before," the latter said.
"Yeah," the former said. "We'd see the other kids doing it and wanted to join, but never could."
"Then you two are going to have fun," Luz said as they went to the first house which had two skeletons near the doorway wearing silly outfits that made the girls giggle. A lady was at the door and she smiled.
"I was hoping my silly skeletons would make people laugh," she said.
"Trick or treat!" The two girls said eagerly.
After being given the candy, they thanked the lady while Amity and Luz watched proudly. Another house had a jack-in-the-box in front of the door. Curious, Solana went and turned the handle. Just then, the top opened and the girls jumped as a scarecrow popped up. "Oh, I've been waiting all night for that!" He said, his silly tone making the girls and their moms giggle before the scarecrow held out a bowl full of candy. "Take any three pieces you'd like, little ones."
"Thank you," the girls said as they picked their three pieces of candy each and waved goodbye while going back to their folks.
"That is quite a clever way to not only make people laugh but give out candy too," Amity said.
"Some of our neighbors like to get creative," Luz said. "One year, one of our neighbors had a dance floor set up in the yard and she put on some fun Halloween-themed song the kids could dance to and they had to dance towards her to get the candy."
"Does she do it every year?"
"I think so. We should go check."
Sure enough, the neighbor did have a dance floor set up in her yard and Mila and Solana jumped in to dance on it, not only getting candy, but also a couple cute stuffed animals. Mila got a pumpkin while Solana got a cat and both were excited as the plushies matched their costumes.
By the time they had finished trick-or-treating, the girls' candy buckets were full and overflowing a little. Luz and Amity, having thought this would happen, carried plastic bags with them to hold onto the extra candy so that the girls didn't lose their treats. "This is fun!" Mila said happily.
"Yeah!" Solana said.
They headed back to Camilla's house where she greeted them warmly. "How did it go?" She asked.
"It was awesome!" Mila said.
"We got a lot of candy," Solana said.
"Want us to do a check to make sure it's all safe?" Vee asked.
"Please," Luz said with a grateful nod.
The girls wanted to help, so Camilla and Vee inspected the candy handed to them and Luz and Amity put each one deemed alright back into the girls' treat buckets. Thankfully, only a few pieces of candy were unwrapped, which Camilla deemed accidental. "Sometimes sealed bags of candy can have some unwrapped candy that was accidentally missed," she said.
"All's good here and it looks like you girls got some quarters too," Vee said.
"Oh, that was probably Mr. Hill in the house on the end of the road, before you reach the highway," Luz said. "He always gives out quarters to the kids for Halloween."
"He is very generous," Camilla said.
Vee smiled. "Oh, Eda stopped by with some treats," she said, showing them off. "Bat-wing cookies."
Luz looked before smiling, seeing Eda had been thoughtful and made the cookies with Earth ingredients with candy bat wing sprinkles. Amity took one and ate it, smiling. "Chocolate," she said.
"No Boiling Isles extras?" Luz said in a whisper.
"Nope," her partner said, smiling, to which Luz was relieved. Eda sometimes made some unusual treats, but she was thoughtful and tried to make treats she knew Amity and Luz would love.
Camilla gave her granddaughters some cookies and put the television on, going to a channel playing family-friendly cartoon for the holiday. Both sisters giggled at the cartoons while the adults talked. "Looks like they had fun," Camilla said.
"They did, even if they got startled a few times," Amity said.
"One neighbor was a scarecrow-in-the-box," Luz said.
"Oh, that was no doubt Mr. Stanley," Camilla said, chuckling. "He's actually been working on that act for a month now from what he told me when I was giving his dogs a check-up."
After a bit, Luz and Amity noticed their daughters had fallen asleep. "Looks like our little munchkins fell asleep," said the former.
"We should get home then," the latter said.
"I'll take you girls home then," Camilla offered. "I know you're just down the street, but it is dark out."
"I'll start putting things away and closing up the house for the night," Vee said.
Luz and Amity took Camilla up on the ride and they were soon home, putting the girls to bed in the living room as their new beds hadn't arrived quite yet, but the rooms were painted and already furnished with toys and books.
"When will their beds arrive?" Amity asked.
"The site we bought them from says tomorrow, so hopefully then," Luz said. "I know the girls have been excited to put their new bedsheets and comforters on their beds."
"If the beds arrive while they're in school tomorrow, then we can surprise them when they come home," the purple-haired woman said as she and Luz made sure the house was locked up tight before going to bed themselves, joining their daughters into a peaceful sleep.
I wanted to do this chapter as an extra treat for everyone. :)
