We all know The Smiling Critters. But what if there exists a world full of them exist they play a card game? What if there exists a world where a friend group of the critters we know of went through a sacrifice one of their friends have made and 2 of them must fix it through that card game? Mysteries along the way? Yes, that too.

48. Chapter 47

Chapter 47: The Dark Critters

CatNap was in a dark hallway again. He was looking around when he then noticed red smoke appearing around him.

"Not again…" He said, scared as he saw behind him a giant purple cat monster on all-fours with a gaping smile, "SHIT!"

CatNap then ran from the monster, as fast as he could. He keeps turning back to check if the monster was following him. It wasn't.

Halfway, he stopped to catch his breath.

"What… was that?" He wondered, "He keeps following me… He was like… a giant version of me…"

CatNap then turned around. The monster wasn't following him. He sighed in relief as the red smoke appeared in front of him.

"...Oh no…" He said as he hears low sounded purring from behind,

As CatNap was about to run without looking back, the monster got him and was face-to-face with him. CatNap was scared as he was caught and was face-to-face with the monster. He tried to free himself by moving around, but it wouldn't work.

"NO! LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" He shouted as the monster roared at him,

Then, CatNap woke up with a scared scream. He was breathing heavily as he looked at his hands while in bed. But everything feels different. The bed he was sleeping on was red and black. He sighed heavily as he then put his hands on his face, but sometimes was off. Did he get a haircut? What happened to part of his hair covering one of his eyes? Then, he heard a voice from below.

"CatNap?" He said, sounding familiar to him,

CatNap looked down to see none other than DogDay, sleeping on the bed below him, but something was different. His little hair got… little. And he's got some sort of face paint on him. Red lines from his eyes down to his face as if he was crying, but he's not.

"DogDay?" CatNap said,

"What's wrong?" DogDay wondered,

"...I just had a terrible dream. …Again."

DogDay sighed.

"When are you gonna have a good dream for once?" He wondered, in a different mood,

CatNap took a deep breath.

"Probably never…" He replied,

Then, the two critters heard a door opening, revealing a female reptilian-like critter in red and black. She was wearing a mask to cover her face and identity.

"Ah, you two are awake." She said to them, "It's a brand new day for all of us."

"Who are you?" CatNap wondered,

"I will not tell you my real name. For now, call me by my code name, Seraphina."

"...Ok, Seraphina."

"What do we need to do?" DogDay wondered,

"Well, this is the first day for you two after all… Whenever you're both ready, follow me, we already have something planned for you both.

Seraphina left and closed the door, leaving CatNap and DogDay alone. The two looked around the room they were in.

"What is this place anyways?" DogDay wondered, "And why did I feel like I forgot something in my life?"

"I feel like forgetting something in my life as well, DogDay…" CatNap replied, "And what was that mask Seraphina was wearing? It looked… familiar…"

"Let's not get it all round up in our minds, CatNap. Let's focus on what she has in store for us, I guess…"

CatNap took a deep breath.

"Right…" He said as he got off of his bed alongside DogDay, "Whatever happened to us, I'm sure she or someone else will explain to us about it."

"Yeah." DogDay said,

Later, the two were walking in the halls to their destination, while also following Seraphina there.

"Hey, DogDay, do you ever get the feeling that you're forgetting something very important in your life?" CatNap asked him,

"Probably…" DogDay replied,

CatNap stopped walking as he then looked at a mirror and saw his reflection of himself. He does have shorter hair all of a sudden. And the facepaint on his eyes. What do they mean? DogDay saw CatNap and went over to him.

"Come on, don't keep them waiting." He said to CatNap,

"Sorry…" CatNap said, "I'm just curious about the facepaint."

"I'm curious too, now that you think about it. Why does it look like I have bloody tears?"

"I don't know…"

DogDay sighed.

"I'm sure they'll tell us why." He said, "Come on, let's hurry up."

"Ok." CatNap said,

Two masked critters in red and black, one was Seraphina, the lizard-like critter and a bird-like critter. There's three other masked critters in red and black, one is a monkey-like critter, another bull-like critter and the other is a spider-like critter.

"Hello, my fellow critters." The bird-like critter said, "I see you two have awoken from your slumber."

CatNap and DogDay were confused.

"You look… familiar." CatNap said,

"Do I?" The bird-like critter wondered,

"Yeah, but… We kind of forgot the image." DogDay replied,

"Well, I'm wearing a mask, so no need to figure out my identity."

The bird-like critter crosses his arms.

"I am Morris." He greeted, "No need for me or Seraphina to take off our masks because our identities are best kept private. The other three, on the other hand, can keep their masks on, but rather have them off around here. My three fellow critters behind me, show your faces, if you want."

The bull, monkey and spider-like critters took off their masks as red gas came out from the masks. After all of the red gas from the masks came out, the three critters revealed themselves.

"Now, want me to introduce them?" Morris asked CatNap and DogDay,

"Yes, please." DogDay replied,

"They also look… familiar." CatNap replied, "But I can't seem to paint another image."

"Don't worry about that." Morris said, "Worry about who they truly are."

The spider-like critter steps up first.

"First up, is Wendall." Morris said, "She is your slick defender of traps. Don't make her catch you falling behind. Got it?"

"We won't." DogDay said,

"It's a pleasure to meet you both." Wendall said as she took a dramatic bow,

"Who's next?" CatNap wondered,

The bull critter was next.

"Next up is Albert." Morris said, "The muscles of your new group. He'll be your sword, your shield and even your suit of armor."

"A pleasure." Albert said as he offered handshakes to DogDay and CatNap, "You two better not tick me off like Wendall."

"We won't." CatNap said,

"Y-Yes, we won't." DogDay said,

Lastly, the monkey critter stepped forward last.

"And finally, we have Harriet." Morris said, "Harriet is your brain. He'll make sure what choices you'll make are good or bad. Follow his words."

"Yes, we will try our best." DogDay said,

"Question from myself." Harriet said, "Do you two think I look familiar?"

"Well, the most out of the group, yes…" CatNap replied, "But I can't find out why. You look like a friend of our's a while ago…"

Harriet looked down and closed his eyes to smile.

"Well I did have a brother." He replied, "And a family… Where are they? I'll never know…"

"Now, you two have met the rest of us." Morris said, "And don't worry, you're not alone. Because we all have each other."

"And each other is all we need." Seraphina said, "In The Hour Of Joy."

"The Hour Of Joy?" DogDay wondered,

"Oh, speaking of which." Morris said as he went over to give CatNap and DogDay Special masks for them, "You two will wear these masks to hide your identities until it's necessary. And you need new names."

"Can you give us new names?" CatNap wondered,

"Of course."

Morris points to DogDay.

"You will be Baldwin." He said as he then pointed to CatNap, "And you will be Theodore."

"...I like that." CatNap said,

"I like my name too." DogDay said,

"Good." Morris said, "I'm glad."

Seraphina then gave them special made Duel Disks that looked like the ones used by Lenny and LabRat and new decks for them.

"And we have special Duel Disks made by our LabRat." She said to them, "Alongside new decks that we grant you both."

"Thanks." CatNap said,

"We appreciate it." DogDay said,

"And one more thing." Morris said, "You two also bear different marks to symbolize a specific card you have in your decks."

"Huh?"

"What?" CatNap wondered,

"Let's just say this…" Morris said, "Theodore, you have the mark of the killer whale. Baldwin, you have the mark of the condor. However, Baldwin, your mark is special because unlike the rest of our marks where they appear on our arms, your mark is on your back."

"My back?" DogDay said,

"Yes, your back. You'll all know when the time comes."

"When we unleash The Hour Of Joy?" CatNap wondered,

"That and unleashing a message to those in Crittopia."

Morris then puts his feathers in armor out.

"Now, let's welcome Baldwin and Theodore!" He said, "Two of our newest members of The Dark Critters! Together, we will achieve The Hour Of Joy under our Prince's name!"

"Huzzah!" The rest of The Dark Critters shouted with one of their arms up,

"...Huzzah." CatNap said with one of his arms up,

"Yes, huzzah!" DogDay said with his arm up as well,

"You'll both get used to it." Morris said, "Now, for the next step for The Hour Of Joy to occur. And that is, painting the sky red. And it requires all of us to work together, so follow me! Theodore, Baldwin, get ready and put your masks and duel disks on, because you need those for this task to occur."

Morris and the other Dark Critters then left CatNap and DogDay alone as they looked at each other with serious looks on their faces and nodded at each other as they then put on their new duel disks and their new masks on.
