Chapter 1 - Bella

Leaving Forks after graduation had been a hard decision. Charlie had encouraged me to find my own path in life and for that I was grateful. Renee had wanted me to move to Jacksonville with her and Phil. I couldn't do that. Not only for the fact that I didn't want to intrude on their space, but because I'd grown accustomed to having my own space with Charlie. Which was why I had decided to start completely over, a whole new fresh start. Which is how I ended up here in Texas.

My freshman year, I lived in the dorms. Charlie didn't want me working so he sent me money whenever he could.

My second year, Charlie had helped me get an apartment when I'd told him how crappy my dorm experience had been.

It wasn't until the summer between my second and third year that everything changed. I'd just left my last class of the day, when I got a call from Billy. I could tell that he'd been crying. That was my first clue that something was wrong. Billy tells me that there had been an accident. That Charlie had been working when he'd made a routine stop. When Charlie approached the driver's window, they shot him. Billy tells me that he died instantly. I felt the tears fall from my eyes. I immediately made arrangements to go to Forks. The service had been beautiful. Billy and Sue had handled everything. I stayed in Forks for about two weeks. I packed up the entire house. I shipped what I wanted to keep to my apartment in Texas. I signed over the house to Billy. Told him they could use it for whatever they wanted and I made sure that the utilities were paid for. I met with Charlie's attorney and found out that he'd left everything to me. I made sure that his attorney had my contact information in case he needed something. The final thing that I did before I left Forks was I paid a visit to the Cullen's old house. I hadn't been there since my eighteenth birthday. From the outside, nothing had changed. I could tell that they hadn't been there since they'd left four and a half years ago. I said a final goodbye to the life that I'd once wanted and headed to the airport and back to Texas.

During my third year, I didn't socialize much. I kept to myself. After losing Charlie, I was badly depressed. I only left my apartment to go to class. Close to Christmas that year is when everything changed again.

I walked into my last class, a Shakespeare class. In the back of the room, I noticed a girl. She was pale. Paler than me. I instantly knew. She was a vampire.

I slowly approached and sat in the seat next to her. I took a piece of paper out of my notebook and scribbled a note to her.

I know what you are.
