Chapter 2
Kimberly sat next to Steve as he watched the tablet on the footage of the Hulk's attack at Culver University against the army. She knew that the video would probably throw Steve for a bit learning about what they tried to do to remake the serum that was used upon him. She had to admit that experiments were always done on others, but she didn't condone the information that they would use on humans.
Steve looked up as Agent Coulson came over to them. "So, this Doctor Banner was trying to replicate the serum that was used on me?"
"A lot of people were." Agent Coulson admitted. "You were the world's first superhero. Banner thought gamma radiation might hold the key to unlocking Erskine's original formula."
"Didn't really go his way did it?"
"Not so much. When he's not that thing though, guys like Stephen Hawking."
Steve blinked a few times in confusion.
"Phil we haven't made it that far in his learning." Kimberly pointed out letting out a soft breath and leaning back against the seat.
"He's like a smart person. I gotta say, it's an honor to meet you officially."
Steve smiled at Agent Coulson.
"I sort of met you, I mean, I watched you while you were sleeping."
"Phil," Kimberly said looking at the man.
Phil ran his hand over his face. "Sorry. I mean… I was… I was present while you were unconscious from the ice. You know, it really, it's just a…. Just a huge honor to have you onboard."
"Well, I hope I'm the man for the job," Steve admitted unsure of the whole thing.
"Oh, you are. Absolutely. Uh… we've made some modifications to the uniform. I had a little design input."
"The uniform? Aren't the stars and stripes a little… old-fashioned?"
Kimberly let out a soft chuckle as she got up to her feet looking out the front window.
"With everything that's happening, the things that are about to come to light, people might just need a little old-fashioned."
"Perhaps more than what we will ever know," Kimberly said as she put her hands in her pockets. "Phil… who was compromised?"
Phil looked over at Kimberly knowing that the young woman was worried about who was taken over when they were working on Project Pegasus. He took a breath. "Agent Barton… Dr. Selvig.'
Kimberly took a sharp breath through her teeth thinking about Clint Barton who was her friend. He had taught her many things that the young woman would never forget and he was rather open about what she could do. He treated her like she was part of the huge family that Shield had become.
"I know you're worried Kim, but we will get him back," Phil said coming over to the young woman. He put his hand on her shoulder giving it a light squeeze.
Kimberly took a breath. "You've told Nat?"
"Yes."
Kimberly nodded her head weakly.
AVENGERS
Kimberly, Steve, and Phil came down the ramp meeting up with Natasha.
"Agent Romanoff, Captain Rogers."
"Ma'am."
"Hi," Natasha said with a small smile. She looked at Phil. "They need you on the bridge. They're starting the face-trace."
"See you there," Phil said walking away leaving Natasha with Kimberly and Steve.
Kimberly stuck her hands in her pockets as she walked towards the railing.
"It was quite the buzz around here, finding you in the ice. I thought Coulson was gonna swoon. Did he ask you to sign his Captain America trading cards yet?"
"Trading cards?"
"They're vintage, he's very proud," Kimberly said looking over her shoulder at Steve with a small coy smile playing on her lips.
"Doctor Banner." Steve shook Bruce's hand.
"Oh, yeah. Hi. They told me that you'd be coming." Bruce said rather timidly.
"Word is you can find the cube."
"Is that the only word on me?"
Steve smiled slightly. "Only word I care about."
"It must be strange for you, all this."
"Well, this kind of familiar." Steve looked off to where a group of men in training were running.
"Gentlemen, you might want to step inside in a minute. It's gonna get a little hard to breath."
Kimberly smiled at Natasha and slowly followed her friend inside of the Helicarrier. "Are you sure that it is alright for us to have Dr. Banner here? I mean this might be more dangerous than being in a submarine." She pointed out to Natasha as she ran her hand through her blonde hair.
"He wouldn't be here if we didn't need him."
"Right searching for the gamma rays shouldn't be none too hard." She admitted softly. "I can just only hope that we're not too late in finding it." She walked into the main room taking a soft breath.
"We're at lock, sir." Maria called out to Nick.
"Good. Let's vanish." Fury said with a nod of his head.
Steve and Bruce walked in through the glorious gleaming bridge.
Natasha looked back with a slight smile on her lips.
Kimberly wrung her hands together in worry.
"Gentlemen."
Steve gave Fury a ten dollar bill.
Kimberly let out a soft chuckle as she watched Steve walking around marvelling in what he was seeing.
Fury walked over to Bruce and extended his hand.
Bruce relucantaly took it shaking it.
"Doctor, thank you for coming."
"Thanks for asking nicely. So, uh... how long am I staying?"
"Once we get our hands on the Tesseract, you're in the clear."
"Oh yeah, where are you with that?"
Fury turned his attention to Phil.
"We're sweeping every wirelessly accessible camera on the planet. Cellphones, laptops. If it's connected to a satellite, it's eyes and ears for us."
Natasha turned her head still crouching down. "That's still not gonna find them in time."
"You have to narrow the field. How many spectrometers do you have access to?" Bruce explained.
"How many do you need?" Fury questioned looking at them.
"Call every lab you know, tell them to put the spectrometers on the roof and calibrate them for gamma rays. I'll rough out a tracking algorithm based on cluster recognition. At least we could rule out a few places. Do you have somewhere for me to work?"
"Agent Romanoff, would you show Dr. Banner to his laboratory, please."
Natasha stood up nodding her head before leading Banner down the hall. "You're gonna love it, Doc. We got all the toys."
Kimberly looked at the photo of Barton that they had up. She bit her lower lip softly. She knew that they needed to find Clint and get him back safely to them. What worried her the most was how could such a thing happen.
