Jay Halstead woke up to the soft morning light filtering through his curtains, the sounds of Riverdale stirring to life outside. Today was a big day, and for the first time in a long while, he felt a sense of anticipation instead of dread. He dressed in a neatly pressed button-up and dark slacks, wanting to make a good impression for his interview with Tom Keller at the Sheriff's Station.

As he walked down Main Street, the quaint charm of Riverdale continued to grow on him. It was so different from the chaos of Chicago—a quieter, slower pace that, strangely, felt right for where he was in his life.

When Jay arrived at the Sheriff's Station, Tom Keller greeted him warmly, his firm handshake setting the tone for the conversation.

"Jay, good to see you again," Tom said, gesturing for Jay to sit across from his desk. "Let's get started."

Jay nodded, sitting down and straightening his posture. "Thanks for giving me the chance."

Tom smiled. "From what Veronica's said, you've got plenty of experience, and I can tell you're the kind of guy who gets things done. But before we get too far, I need to ask: Why'd you leave the Chicago PD?"

Jay took a deep breath, bracing himself. He'd anticipated the question, but it didn't make answering it any easier. "I was fired," he admitted. "I had a record of insubordination and… I missed some shifts when I shouldn't have. Things got complicated, and I made some bad calls."

Tom studied him for a moment, his expression unreadable. "And do you think you've learned from those mistakes?"

Jay met his gaze directly. "I do. I let the job consume me, and I lost sight of everything else. That's why I'm here—to start fresh and find a better balance."

Tom nodded, his face softening. "I appreciate your honesty. Nobody's perfect, Jay, and it sounds like you're taking the right steps to turn things around. I think you'd be a great addition here. If you're ready to put in the work, the job's yours."

Relief washed over Jay as he extended his hand. "Thank you, Tom. I won't let you down."

After the interview, Jay stepped outside the station and immediately pulled out his phone to text Veronica.

Jay: Got the job. I'm in.

Her reply came almost instantly.

Veronica: I knew you would! Congrats, Jay. Chinese food tonight to celebrate. My treat. Be ready at 7.

That evening, Jay opened his door to find Veronica standing there with two bags of Chinese takeout and her signature confident smile. "Congrats, Detective," she teased, handing him one of the bags. "Or should I say, Sheriff's Deputy?"

Jay chuckled, stepping aside to let her in. "Not sure what my title is yet, but I'll take it."

They set the food out on the small kitchen table, the smell of General Tso's chicken and fried rice filling the air. As they ate, Veronica raised her glass of sparkling water. "To new beginnings," she said, clinking it against Jay's soda.

"To new beginnings," he echoed, smiling.

They ate in companionable silence for a while, the clatter of chopsticks and the occasional laugh filling the room. Veronica broke the quiet first, her tone playful.

"So," she said, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Have you noticed Moose acting… different around you?"

Jay paused, mid-bite. "Different how?"

She smirked. "Oh, come on, Jay. The way he lights up when you're around? The way he talks to you like he's known you forever? It's pretty obvious."

Jay set his chopsticks down, a small smile tugging at his lips. "You think he has a crush on me?"

"I know he has a crush on you," Veronica replied, leaning back in her chair. "And honestly? It's adorable."

Jay laughed softly, shaking his head. "I don't know about that. Moose is a great guy, but I don't think I'm in the best place for… anything like that right now."

Veronica's expression softened. "Jay, no one's saying you have to rush into anything. But don't close yourself off either. Moose likes you, and from what I can tell, you two get along really well. Who knows? Maybe it's worth exploring."

Jay sighed, a wistful look crossing his face. "I wish I had that kind of clarity. After everything that happened with Hailey… it's hard to think about starting over in that way."

Veronica reached across the table, resting a hand on his. "You're allowed to take your time. But don't let the past stop you from finding something good now. You deserve to be happy, Jay."

He looked at her, gratitude shining in his eyes. "Thanks, Veronica. I mean it. You've been a great friend."

"Someone has to keep you in line," she teased, though her smile was warm.

As the evening wound down, Veronica helped Jay clean up before she left, leaving him with a lot to think about. Moose's easy smile and their late-night conversation at Pop's flashed through his mind. Maybe Veronica was right. Maybe there was more waiting for him in Riverdale than just a fresh start.
