Chapter 5
TK sat on the bed in his hotel room. He was mulling over the day. Davis and him had been extra vigilant about not letting Kari get separated from them. There had been moments where it was hard. Kari had to use the washroom and they did as well. There was also May and Jennifer pulling Kari away to chat. TK looked down at his arm. He winced seeing black. He pulled his shirt down.
"So how do you think Kari's going to do tonight?" Davis asked. He was juggling a soccer ball while standing in front of the TV. TK stood and lunged forward. He caught the ball before it hit the TV.
"I'm not sure. You need to be careful." TK said sternly looking at the TV. Davis rolled his eyes and grabbed the soccer ball from TK's hands.
"Chill, it wasn't even close to hitting it." TK almost laughed. He breathed out and looked around the room.
"What time is curfew?" Davis went back to juggling.
"9. I think." TK nodded.
"Maybe I should just go check on her." TK moved to the front door when there was a knock. Davis let the ball hit the floor and the two shared a confused look. TK's eyes flashed to the clock between their beds. It read 9:10. TK went wide eyed.
"Hide the ball it's Mr. Kimo." Davis shuffled quickly and kicked the ball under the bed. TK walked to the door. He looked through the peephole and saw his teacher. TK opened the door and plastered on a smile.
"Hi Mr. Kimo." TK greeted. Mr. Kimo stepped inside.
"I am doing bed checks. It's 10 after which means no one is to leave their rooms. Understand?" TK nodded and Davis saluted. Mr. Kimo frowned a moment staring at Davis,
"You don't have a soccer ball in here do you Davis?" Mr. Kimo asked. TK looked at Davis who shook his head.
"Of course not!" Davis lied. TK looked down at Davis' feet and noticed the soccer ball slowly rolling from under the bed towards Davis' feet. TK quickly tapped Mr. Kimo on the shoulder.
"So temple tomorrow! 8am?" TK asked. Mr. Kimo looked at TK suspiciously.
"8:30 Mr. Takashi. Breakfast is at 7:30." TK nodded.
"Look forward to it!" TK said in a chipper voice. Mr. Kimo studied him a moment. He then smiled.
"Alright boys bed. I've got the rest of the class to check. I'm right across the hall so any funny business." He paused and looked at Davis. Davis was slowly trying to discreetly kick the soccer ball back under the bed. TK spoke loudly,
"And you will definitely know!" TK said enthusiastically. Mr. Kimo looked to TK.
"Yes. Alright night boys." Mr. Kimo turned and exited the room. TK waved and plastered a smile on his face.
"Night Mr. Kimo." He called as his teacher turned to walk down the hall to the next room." TK shut the door and glared at Davis.
"Get that ball under control Davis!" TK scolded. Davis rolled his eyes and bent down to scoop up his ball.
"He didn't even notice." Davis then tucked his ball under his arm.
"Come on let's go check on Kari." Davis walked to the door and TK placed a hand on Davis' chest.
"Hold it Davis. Mr. Kimo's still out there. He's checking everyone else. Which means we can't leave until we hear him come back." Davis growled.
"Ugh so annoying why doesn't he trust us." TK rolled his eyes.
"It's a mystery." TK said sarcastically. Davis started juggling the ball again. TK shook his head.
"I'm gonna brush my teeth." He didn't wait for a response from Davis. TK walked into the washroom and shut the door. He then flicked the light on and let out a sigh. His arm hurt, a lot. TK locked the door and then pulled his sleeve up. His forearm was black. It looked like a horrible bruise. TK placed his hand on top of the bruise and let out an exhale.
"Gah." TK said out loud. It was burning. TK looked at himself in the mirror. This bruise had been growing for a while now. His heart sank. He knew what it was from. Every time he touched Kari, there was a sharp pain in his forearm, he kept it a secret, but every time he touched her, he was getting hurt. TK couldn't understand why this was happening. What was worse is that Kari had been right. She was infecting him. He growled at the thought. He wondered if Davis was having the same issue. TK looked at the door. He wanted to ask Davis. Figure out if he had bruising as well. His mind flashed to Kari's face when she thought she was hurting them. TK looked down, he couldn't let her know. He ran the water and splashed his face. His heart ached. He was so worried about Kari. He hated that she was on her own at that moment. He wanted to be with her. He stood tall and dried his face. He was going to go get her. Tell her to sleep in his and Davis' room. He put the towel back on the rack, unlocked the bathroom door and opened it. He could hear talking through the closed front door in the hallway. He growled realizing Mr. Kimo was only next door. He stepped back into the bathroom and closed the door. He noticed his forearm was exposed. He quickly pushed the sleeve down and then started brushing his teeth. His mind was spinning. He was seeing Kari. He could see her when they were younger, only 3 years had gone by. But it felt like an age. She was outside in the courtyard at their school. Her face pale and her eyes lost. He could see her suffering. His mind flashed to the last two weeks. She was quieter, more careful with her steps. Her eyes were swollen. TK wanted to hold her to make everything better. He then stopped. His stomach knotted. He struggled with his feelings for Kari. Kari and him were best friends. He felt she could read him like no one else. It was always a comfort to him. Knowing he could look at her and she would know what he was feeling. He felt his cheeks warm. She was so beautiful. Every time they touched, there were fireworks in his chest. His stomach would flutter and then he would look at her lips. He wanted them. He felt almost possessive. He wanted them so badly. Everything that came out of her mouth felt like an invitation to kiss her. His body felt warm as he thought about her skin, her lips- he stopped. Davis came to his mind. TK sighed. While Kari could read him like a book. He struggled to read her. She was a flirt and TK found it adorable. But it made it impossible to know what she felt. Did she like him? TK couldn't tell. The way she looked at Davis, how she laughed at his jokes. She would reach across their table and grab Davis' hand. It made TK's blood boil. There was this anger that TK felt towards Davis. TK always felt a moment away from violence when it came to Kari. Other guys would look at her or flirt with her, and TK wanted to punch their lights out. She's mine. He would growl to himself. TK stopped. It was sick, Kari wasn't his. She was no one's property but her own. That's why TK started distancing himself from Kari. He felt so protective and primal over her. It was unhealthy and scary. He liked Davis, a lot. Davis was one of his closest friends. The way he would think about ripping Davis' head off scared TK. No girl should make me feel so violent. He thought to himself. The intensity he felt for Kari scared him. He broke away from her. He needed to feel in control. He dated Jade. It was nice, TK couldn't deny. Kissing and feeling Jade got his hormones all over the place. It was fun. Jade was good looking and TK was attracted to her. But she wasn't Kari. No matter how many times him and Jade would make out, TK could only think about Kari. He broke up with Jade after a short while. He only wanted Kari. He tried to integrate himself back with Kari. But she was different, his time with Jade had pushed her closer to Davis. He watched as the two of them walked home together. He would see her bat her eyes at Davis and it hurt TK. The three of them were close but TK was scared that Kari was interested in Davis. He felt like he should just ask her out put it on the line. Then he saw the two of them after Davis' soccer practice one day. It had been raining. Davis wrapped his coat around Kari. The two were laughing. Kari hugged Davis and put her head on Davis' chest. TK felt his stomach drop. She looked happy. TK felt his mind come to the present. He was sure, Kari liked Davis. The feeling made TK want to punch the wall or throw up. At the moment he thought about doing both.
"TK? You all good?" Davis' voice reached TK's ears. He realized he had been in the washroom a while. He finished brushing his teeth and exited the bathroom. Davis was no longer playing with the soccer ball. Instead he was laying in his bed watching TV.
"You get lost?" Davis asked. TK sighed,
"No just tired." He lied. He studied Davis. Davis was carefree and charming. TK felt a little insignificant. He then sat on his own bed. He looked into his bag. There was a pair of pyjama bottoms. He pulled out a T shirt and realized he couldn't wear that. He then started rummaging around and found a grey long sleeve shirt. TK looked over his shoulder. Davis was flicking through the channels. TK pulled off his uniform shirt and quickly put the grey shirt on. He then stripped down and put his pyjama pants on.
"I'm gonna text Kari." TK announced as he moved his bag off the bed. He pulled out his phone,
"I already did. She said she's okay. Just chatting with Jade." TK felt his heart drop. Davis had already texted her. TK felt angry. He wanted to text her. He glanced down at his phone. He saw a missed text from his brother and a few others from Jade. He had seen the text from his brother earlier but once again, decided to ignore it. He put his phone in his bag and flopped onto the bed. Davis then stood.
"Alright I'm going to use the bathroom." Davis dropped the remote on his bed and walked into the restroom. TK stared up at the ceiling. He felt mad. Annoyed and mad. Davis had been all upset with him earlier. Didn't Davis know that Kari was into him? TK thought about Kari. He growled. If she needed help, Davis could go help her. It hurt too much and this time, TK didn't feel like getting hurt any longer. He flipped open his phone and started replying to text messages.
Kari changed into her pyjamas. She stood in the bathroom with the door open. She was slightly embarrassed thinking about Jade seeing her changing but also needed Jade close. The woman wasn't there. But Kari felt cold and scared. She slipped her pyjama pants on and looked in the mirror. There was no woman staring back at her. Memories of the day played in Kari's mind. TK and Davis were so concerned about her. They kept her close and Kari blushed thinking about herself squished between the two boys. It was oddly electric. This horrible thing was happening to her and yet, she felt attracted to the boys. The same embarrassment flooded her cheeks. It felt wrong. But then there was a quiver in her stomach. It also felt fun and exciting. She brushed her teeth hoping the cool water would rid her cheeks of the vibrant pink that was flushed across them.
"Oh you left the door open." Jade spoke and Kari looked over her right shoulder. Jade was standing in the doorway. Kari spat out her toothpaste and addressed Jade.
"Do you need in?" Kari asked as she finished up brushing. Jade sighed.
"Yeah but er, we can share." Jade said in almost a sad voice. Kari nodded and rinsed her mouth out. There was a knock at the door and both girls looked at each other. Kari placed her toothbrush on the counter. She then went over to the front door. She pulled open the door and Mr. Kimo was standing on the other side. Kari let out a breath.
"Hi Mr. Kimo." Her teacher nodded,
"Miss Kamiya. I trust you are on your way to bed?" He asked and Kari nodded. Jade stepped to stand next to Kari.
"Hi Mr. Kimo." Mr. Kimo nodded at Jade,
"You girls enjoy today?" He asked with a smile. Kari nodded.
"Very much so." She responded. Her teacher then looked at Jade.
"Well I will leave you both to get to bed. Breakfast is 7:30." Kari bowed and gave her teacher a smile.
"See you in the morning." Kari bid farewell to Mr. Kimo. He waved and turned and made his way down the hall. Kari closed the door.
"You think he's going straight to his room?" Jade asked. Kari shrugged.
"Maybe." She responded. Jade went back into the bathroom.
"I think me and TK are going to hang out." Jade announced. Kari was frozen a moment.
"Tomorrow?" Kari asked. Jade started brushing her hair.
"No, now. Mr. Kimos done his checks. Which means he won't be patrolling. I was hoping to spend some time in the gardens today with TK." Jade then glared at Kari.
"But he seemed busy." Jade said in a low voice. Kari felt hurt. She didn't mean to. If TK wanted to be with Jade he should be. Kari's stomach dropped. The thought was flippant and there was a part of her that wanted to please Jade. Have her get what she wants. Kari looked down at her fingers. The image of TK and Jade entered her mind. She winced. She didn't like it.
"Okay. I'm gonna go text him." Kari looked up and noticed Jade had touched up her make up. She pushed her boobs up as she passed Kari. Kari frowned. She put a hand to her chest. Her boobs felt small. She resisted touching them. Instead she squeezed the skin above them. She shivered. It was cold. Kari felt a breath on her. She quickly stood straight and exited the bathroom. Jade was tapping her phone. Kari walked to her bed and picked up her phone. She had no missed messages. She sighed. Jade changed. Kari watched her slip on a pair of jeans and a low cut top. Kari kept her eyes downward. Kari heard crackling. She looked over and saw Jade pop a piece of gum in her mouth. Jade pocketed her phone in the back pocket of her jeans. She then looked at Kari.
"TK said coast is clear so he and I will be downstairs." Kari and her stared at one another. Kari stood, it was on the tip of her tongue to invite herself along. Kari looked away. She couldn't. If TK liked Jade, he should have some time alone with her. Kari gave Jade a small nod.
"Guess I'll see you later." She said. Jade didn't respond. She walked to the door and after a moment. Kari heard the door open and close. Kari looked around the empty room. The woman was not there. Kari looked down at the ground. Dark water was pooling around her feet. Kari quickly scrambled onto the bed. She looked around. Still no sign of the woman. Kari looked at her phone clutched in her right hand. She needed help. She didn't want to intrude, she didn't want to seem so needy. But she needed someone, and there was one person she knew she could call.
Davis watched TK check is phone, over and over again. Davis blew out a breath. TK was pacing and it was starting to annoy Davis.
"Dude what's up?" Davis asked turning his head from the TV to look at the blonde teen. TK sat down and shook his head.
"Nothing. I think I need a walk." TK's phone chimed. Davis and TK looked at the phone in TK's phone. TK read a message on his phone. He then moved and looked through the peephole on their door. Davis sat up.
"Is it Kari?!" Davis asked now feeling concerned. TK sighed and looked back.
"Oh uhm, just a minute Davis. I'll be right back." TK eased open the door and then slipped out into the hall. Davis watched as his friend gently closed it making sure not to make a noise. Davis growled. It was frustrating. TK was the savior. TK's touch is what freed Kari from the woman. Davis looked at his hands.
"Stupid." He spat at them. All his hands could do was see what horrible things were happening to Kari. He couldn't help. Davis looked up at the ceiling. His phone chimed. He rolled his eyes. Dominic and Lewis were planning an elaborate heist to sneak out of the hotel. Davis felt like it was a dumb idea.
"We are in the country, there's nothing out here except this hotel and the temple." Davis mumbled as he lifted his phone to his face. His eyes went wide. Dominic and Lewis had not texted him.
Hey Davis, you still awake?
The message was from Kari. He looked over at the door. Isn't TK with Kari? He started typing a response.
Yeah you and TK okay?
Davis pressed send and then watched as Kari typed a response.
TK's fine I'm sure. You want to talk?
Davis scrunched his face. This was confusing.
Sure
He responded. His phone then lit up as it started ringing. Kari was calling him. Davis turned the TV off and then answered the phone.
"Hey Kar." Davis greeted her. Kari breathed out and spoke.
"Hi Davis." She said. Davis adjusted the phone to his ear.
"So where are you and TK? Want me to come meet you?" Davis asked. Kari was quiet a moment.
"Did TK leave?" Kari asked. Davis looked around the room,
"Er, yeah about 5 minutes ago." Davis replied. Davis could hear Kari breathe.
"I think him and Jade are hanging out. Are you by yourself then?" Kari asked. Davis felt his stomach flutter. TK wasn't with Kari. And Kari was asking if Davis was alone. Davis smirked.
"Yeah I didn't realize TK would be the rule breaking type this trip." He commented. He heard Kari let out a small laugh.
"Have you broken the TV yet?" She asked. Davis' smile grew wider.
"No! Not even close." He said proudly. Kari chuckled,
"Just a matter of time." She quipped. Davis laid back on the bed.
"Excuse me Miss Kamiya, let's not forget whose up for captain this season." Kari then responded.
"If your insinuating that captains arent reckless then I believe the only viable option on your team is Bryson." Davis let out a laugh.
"Bryson?! He's our goalie whose afraid of the ball!" Kari laughed,
"Afraid and cautious. The perfect leader for your motley crew." Davis rolled his eyes.
"If he even makes it this year." Kari giggled and then was quiet. Davis listened to her breathe. He wondered what she was doing. Was she laying in her bed? Was she in her pyjamas? Davis' mind started to wander. He shook his head and then spoke breaking up the silence.
"Are you okay? Like is the woman…. There?" Davis was nervous for Kari's response. She stayed quiet and then finally spoke.
"No. She's not. I don't really know where she's gone but... I'm relieved. I feel so silly having you and TK around. You guys should be free to you know, do your own thing." Davis frowned.
"Kari if you think for a second me and TK are annoyed. Check yourself Kamiya. This is our jam. This is digital world activity to the next level. We were born for this." Davis felt triumphant as he spoke. Kari laughed. It was true though, Davis really felt like he had a real purpose in this world the day he was partnered with Veemon. It had been 3 years and there had been no contact. It made Davis feel empty. Sure he was worried about Kari but this was now opening the door to the possibility of Davis being reunited with Veemon.
"Kari we get to go in there and kick some Evil Digimon ass!" Davis was grinning from ear to ear. Kari was silent on the other end. The longer she was silent. The more Davis' smile began to fade.
"Kar?" Davis asked. Kari let out a breath.
"I don't want to get your hopes up Davis. What if this isn't the digital world adventure you're used to?" Davis frowned.
"But it is! Kari I get that this is bad but, we're the digidestined. This is the type of stuff we were born to fight." Davis was now pleading with Kari. Kari sniffled. That got Davis' attention.
"It's just…the dark ocean…it's not the same." Kari said in a low voice. Davis sighed,
"Sure physically it's a different world but it's all the same. I mean Malomyotismon connected all the worlds. It's-" Davis paused unsure how to phrase it. He shook his head.
"Kari it's still digital world activity which means Gatomon and the others are involved! We're going to be reunited!" Davis couldn't understand how Kari wasn't feeling excited. They had all been aching to see their partners. Now it was going to be happening. Kari took a moment and then responded.
"How do you stay so positive Davis?" She asked and Davis felt his cheeks flush.
"What else is there?" Davis asked honestly. He heard Kari smile. It was a small breath but Davis knew there was joy behind it.
"So tell me, what's the first thing you and Veemon are eating once you're reunited?" Davis felt elated. He sat up straight.
"Well-" Davis stopped. He wanted to say ramen from his favourite ramen place near their old elementary school. Davis thought about Kari, on the other end of the phone. She was talking only to him. Davis rotated his shoulders.
"I'd probably take you and Gatomon along for your favourite ice cream." He was flirting, he knew it. His heart rate picked up. How is she going to respond? Kari made a small noise,
"Ah now that sounds lovely. Where would we get it from?" She asked and Davis thought he might fall over. She was going along with it!
"Well you see I think I'd pick the one across from the park, remember where Tai and I used to play soccer?" Davis was thinking back to years ago. Tai had taken him under his wing and taught him some soccer skills. Kari was there, in a little pink dress cheering them on. She was so cute.
"I think that would be amazing." Kari replied. Davis took a deep breath.
"Then it's a date." Davis said. His heart was beating in his ears. He asked. He seriously asked Kari on a date. He waited in agony for Kari to respond.
"I think so." Kari said. Davis thought he might leap through the ceiling. He smiled even bigger. There was a noise on Kari's end of the phone,
"Oh Jades back. Night!" Kari ended the call hastily. Davis was a bit annoyed but lowered his phone. He looked around. He couldn't believe it. He had a date with Kari! Davis stood trying to figure out what to do with his body. He wanted to run and jump. He then thought about doing push-ups. Davis spun in one spot a moment. He then stopped. If Jade is back, TK will be coming in any moment. Davis abandoned his plan for celebrating. He didn't want to show boat. Hell he didn't want TK to know at all. He put his phone on the side table. Davis then pulled his trousers and shirt off. He was in his boxers and he jumped into bed. He pulled the covers up and hit the light. He'd pretend to be asleep. That was his plan. He rolled over to face the window. His mind was racing and his heart was beating fast. He was anticipating TK walking in any minute. Davis tried to settle himself. It was no use, his mind was electric, he had a date with Kari. He knew he probably would not be able to sleep.
