Jay Halstead woke up to the soft vibration of his phone on the nightstand. Still groggy, he reached for it, squinting at the bright screen. His heart sank as he read the message. It was from Hailey.

Hailey: Saw you talking to Moose last night. You seem very comfortable around him. Interesting choice of company. Maybe I should keep tabs on you.

Jay sat up in bed, his jaw tightening. He stared at the message for a moment before typing out a response.

Jay: What the hell, Hailey? Are you spying on me now?

Her reply came almost immediately.

Hailey: Just staying informed. Small towns have a way of revealing things, Jay.

His frustration boiled over as he quickly fired back.

Jay: This isn't staying informed. This is stalking. Whatever you're doing, stop. I swear, I'll tell Veronica about this.

A pause. Then her reply came, laced with a mocking tone.

Hailey: Go ahead, tell her. Let's see how much she really cares about your little complaints.

Jay gritted his teeth, anger flaring in his chest. He threw off the covers, pacing the room as he thought about what to do. He grabbed his phone and dialed Veronica's number.

"Jay?" Veronica's voice was groggy but alert. "What's going on?"

"It's Hailey," Jay said, his tone sharp. "She's been spying on me. She sent me a text this morning about Moose and me. She's… watching me."

There was a pause, then Veronica's voice turned icy. "She what? Oh, hell no. Jay, you don't have to deal with this. I'll handle it."

Jay blinked. "Veronica, I don't think—"

"No," she interrupted firmly. "This isn't just your problem anymore. She's messing with you, and I'm not about to let that slide. I'll talk to her."

Jay sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Veronica—"

"Trust me, Jay," she said, her voice softening slightly. "I've got this."

The next night, after Jay's shift at the Sheriff's Station, he found Veronica waiting for him outside his apartment building. Her arms were crossed, her expression a mix of determination and simmering anger.

"Veronica," Jay greeted warily. "What happened?"

She stepped forward, her heels clicking against the pavement. "I confronted Hailey. Told her to back off. And I made it very clear that if she doesn't, I'll get Cheryl involved."

Jay blinked in surprise. "Cheryl? Why would you—"

"Because Cheryl doesn't play games," Veronica said bluntly. "If Hailey thinks she can waltz into Riverdale and make your life hell, she hasn't met Cheryl Blossom."

Jay stared at her, a mix of gratitude and frustration swirling in his chest. "I didn't want you to get dragged into this, Veronica."

Veronica placed a hand on his arm, her expression softening. "You're my friend, Jay. I'm not going to stand by and let someone like Hailey mess with you. She crossed a line, and she needs to know there are consequences."

Jay exhaled slowly, his anger bubbling just beneath the surface. "She's relentless. Even after everything we've been through, she can't just leave it alone."

"She's bitter, Jay," Veronica said. "She's trying to control a situation she already lost. But you're stronger than this. Don't let her win."

Jay nodded, though his frustration lingered. "I just… I don't understand why she's doing this. Why come here? Why try to take over my life?"

Veronica's eyes softened. "Because she can't stand the idea of you moving on without her. But Jay, you have people here who care about you. You've got me, and you've got Moose, and you've got this new start. Don't let her ruin it."

Her words hit him, grounding him in a way he hadn't expected. "Thanks, Veronica," he said quietly. "I don't know what I'd do without you."

She smiled, squeezing his arm. "Lucky for you, you won't have to find out."

That night, Jay sat on his couch, replaying the events of the day in his mind. His anger toward Hailey hadn't diminished, but Veronica's unwavering support gave him a glimmer of hope. No matter what Hailey tried to pull, he knew he wasn't alone. And with friends like Veronica, he was ready to face whatever came next.
