Jay Halstead woke up the next morning to the gentle buzz of his alarm. The first rays of sunlight filtered through his curtains, but his mind was already racing. The night before had been equal parts thrilling and unnerving—a kiss with Moose that left him feeling more alive than he had in years, followed by yet another cryptic and threatening text from Hailey. He sighed, dragging himself out of bed and preparing for another shift at the Sheriff's Station.

At work, the air felt different. Jay busied himself with his tasks, trying to shake off the tension that seemed to follow him. As he finished filing some paperwork, Kevin Keller approached him, looking uncharacteristically hesitant.

"Hey, Jay," Kevin started, his tone softer than it had been in days.

Jay looked up from his desk. "Hey, Kevin. What's up?"

Kevin shifted uncomfortably, then sighed. "I just wanted to say I'm sorry. For what I said before, for being cold toward you. I was out of line."

Jay raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair. "What brought this on?"

Kevin scratched the back of his neck. "I guess I was jealous. Moose and I have history, and seeing him so happy around you… it messed with my head. But that's not your fault. Moose deserves to be happy. And honestly, so do you."

Jay nodded, appreciating the vulnerability in Kevin's words. "Thanks, Kevin. I get it. And for what it's worth, I wasn't trying to make things complicated."

Kevin smiled faintly. "You didn't. That was all me. Anyway, truce?"

Jay extended a hand, which Kevin shook firmly. "Truce."

The day passed without much incident until Jay stepped outside the station in the evening, ready to head home. He barely made it two steps before a figure emerged from the shadows. Hailey. Her eyes were wild, and her presence sent a shiver down his spine.

"Jay," she said, her voice a mix of venom and desperation. "You think you can just start over? That you can forget everything we had?"

Jay steeled himself, keeping his tone calm. "Hailey, this has to stop. Whatever you're trying to do, it's not going to work."

She took a step closer, her expression twisting. "You don't get to decide when this ends. I do."

Before Jay could respond, a voice called out, breaking the tension. "Jay!"

He turned to see Moose Mason standing near his truck, a smile lighting up his face. The sight of Moose grounded Jay, giving him the courage to face Hailey.

"I'm done, Hailey," Jay said firmly. "Whatever game you're playing, it's over."

Hailey's lips curled into a bitter smirk. "We'll see about that." She turned and disappeared into the night, leaving Jay with a heavy sense of foreboding.

Moose approached, concern etched on his face. "Everything okay?"

Jay forced a smile. "It is now. Actually, I was about to ask if you wanted to go to dinner. There's this Italian place I've been meaning to try."

Moose's face lit up. "A date? I'd love to."

That night, Jay and Moose sat across from each other in a cozy Italian restaurant. Candlelight flickered between them, casting a warm glow over the table. As they sipped wine and waited for their food, the conversation turned personal.

"So," Moose said, his tone playful. "What was high school like for you, Jay?"

Jay chuckled, leaning back in his chair. "Oh, man. High school was… interesting. I was the quiet kid, but I was good at sports. Kept to myself most of the time. What about you?"

Moose grinned. "I was the opposite. Football team, big personality, but I was hiding a lot. Pretending to be someone I wasn't. It took me a long time to figure out who I really was."

Jay nodded, appreciating the honesty. "Sounds like we were both figuring things out in our own way."

They laughed as they swapped high school stories, the conversation flowing effortlessly. But their easy rhythm was interrupted when Jay spotted something—or rather, someone—out of the corner of his eye.

"Is that… Veronica and the gang?" Jay asked, nodding toward a nearby table.

Moose turned to look and burst out laughing. Sure enough, Veronica, Betty, Archie, Jughead, and Cheryl were seated nearby, trying (and failing) to look inconspicuous.

Jay waved, and the group sheepishly waved back before bursting into laughter. Moose shook his head. "They're the worst spies."

Jay grinned. "But you gotta love them."

They returned to their dinner, the moment only adding to the warmth of the evening.

After dinner, Jay and Moose walked through the quiet streets of Riverdale, their steps unhurried as they joked and laughed. The connection between them felt undeniable, and Jay found himself letting down walls he didn't realize he'd built.

"You know," Moose said, his voice teasing, "you're pretty charming when you're not all serious and brooding."

Jay smirked. "Oh, so you like the brooding?"

Moose laughed, leaning closer. "Maybe a little."

As they reached their apartment complex, Moose stopped and turned to Jay, his expression earnest. "Thanks for tonight, Jay. I had a great time."

Jay smiled, feeling the sincerity in Moose's words. "So did I."

Moose hesitated for a moment, then added softly, "I think I'm falling for you, Jay."

Jay's heart skipped a beat, and he leaned in, kissing Moose gently. "I think I'm falling for you too."

When Jay returned to his apartment, his phone buzzed. It was a text from Hailey.

Hailey: I told Archie everything. You better watch your back. He knows what you've done.

Jay's blood ran cold. He quickly texted Archie.

Jay: Whatever Hailey told you, it's a lie. She's trying to manipulate you.

Archie's response came quickly.

Archie: Don't worry, Jay. I've had enough of her lies. She doesn't scare me.

Relieved, Jay set his phone down, only for it to buzz again. This time, it was Moose.

Moose: Tonight was amazing. Can't stop thinking about you. ️

Jay grinned, typing back.

Jay: Same here. Let's hang out at Pop's? My treat. ;)

Moose responded with a flirtatious message, quoting Taylor Swift's Lover lyrics: "Can I go where you go?" Jay laughed and replied: "Always."

He texted Veronica about the date, and they exchanged playful messages, with her gushing over how happy she was for him.

Later that night, Jay met Moose outside Pop's Chock'lit Shoppe. They leaned against the neon-lit diner, teasing each other with more Lover lyrics before sharing a kiss under the stars.

As they walked back to their apartment complex, hand in hand, Moose stopped at his door and pulled Jay close.

"Goodnight, Jay," Moose whispered. "I love you."

Jay kissed him softly. "I love you too."

He watched Moose disappear into his apartment before heading back to his own, a warmth spreading through him. For the first time in a long time, Jay felt like things were finally falling into place. Despite Hailey's attempts to disrupt his life, he knew he had something real with Moose—and that was worth fighting for.
