The next morning, Jay woke to find Moose still beside him, the early sunlight casting a golden glow over the room. Moose stirred, turning to face Jay with a sleepy smile.
"Morning," Moose mumbled.
"Morning," Jay replied, brushing a hand through Moose's hair. "Any texts from Hailey?"
Moose grabbed his phone from the nightstand and checked. "Nope. You?"
Jay shook his head. "Nothing yet. Maybe she's taking a day off."
Moose chuckled. "Doubtful."
Jay sighed, the weight of the past few days pressing on him. "Yesterday was... insane. From interrogating Hailey—sorry, 'Laura'—to everything that happened last night."
Moose propped himself up on his elbow, his grin softening. "It was crazy, but in a weird way... I don't know. It was the best date I've ever been on."
Jay laughed, a genuine sound that felt rare in these tense times. "The best date?"
"Think about it," Moose said, his tone playful. "High stakes, life-or-death drama, and we're still here, together. How many couples can say that?"
Jay smiled, feeling a warmth bloom in his chest. "When you put it that way, I guess it was kind of great."
"And tonight's distraction with Josie and the Pussycats?" Moose added. "That might be the thing that finally helps us put Hailey to justice."
Jay nodded, his determination returning. "Let's hope so. We can't let her keep doing this to us—or anyone else."
As Jay lay on his back in bed, his arm lazily draped around Moose's shoulders. The soft morning sunlight streamed through the window, casting a warm glow over the room. Moose traced lazy circles on Jay's chest, his grin playful and relaxed.
"So," Moose began, his voice teasing. "Did I mention you look ridiculously hot when you're all serious and intense?"
Jay chuckled, turning his head to face Moose. "You mean when I'm interrogating someone or smashing a tape recorder to pieces?"
Moose smirked. "That, and just now. You've got that whole brooding-but-irresistible thing going for you."
Jay rolled his eyes but couldn't suppress a grin. "I guess that makes you the charming distraction I can't resist."
"Exactly," Moose said, leaning in for a quick kiss. "You're catching on."
Before their banter could continue, Jay's phone buzzed on the nightstand, breaking the moment. Moose groaned, burying his face in Jay's chest.
"Do we have to check it?" Moose mumbled.
Jay sighed, reaching for the phone. "Let's see who's interrupting."
It was a text from Veronica Lodge.
Veronica: Josie's here. We're at my apartment now discussing the plan to take Hailey down. Get here ASAP. We're brainstorming big ideas.
Jay showed the text to Moose, who propped himself up on one elbow to read it. "Well," Moose said, stretching, "sounds like we've got another round of chaos ahead."
Jay nodded, scrolling through his messages briefly before setting the phone down. "Veronica's determined. She's not letting this go."
"Neither are we," Moose said, his tone steady. "We're in this together."
Jay smiled at Moose's words, appreciating how supportive he'd been through all of this. As they both started to sit up, Moose hesitated, a thoughtful expression crossing his face.
"Before we get up and face whatever insanity today has for us," Moose said, his voice soft, "I've gotta ask you something."
Jay raised an eyebrow. "What's on your mind?"
Moose reached for Jay's hand, intertwining their fingers. "I just want to make sure... are you my boyfriend?"
Jay blinked, momentarily taken aback by the directness of the question. Then, his lips curved into a soft smile. "Moose, I thought that was already obvious."
"Maybe," Moose said, his grin returning. "But I wanted to hear you say it."
Jay leaned in, brushing his lips against Moose's. "Yes, Moose. I'm your boyfriend."
Moose beamed, his face lighting up. "Good. Because I'm yours."
They shared another kiss, the moment lingering until Moose finally pulled back. "Alright, now that we've got that cleared up, let's get dressed before Veronica sends another ten texts."
Jay laughed, pulling himself out of bed. "Fair enough. Let's go see what she and Josie have planned to bring Hailey down."
As they got ready, the tension from the past few days seemed to lift slightly, replaced by the steadying presence they found in each other. No matter what challenges lay ahead, they were in it together.
Jay and Moose walked down the hallway of Veronica Lodge's luxurious apartment building, the sound of their footsteps echoing softly. Moose gave Jay a reassuring nudge as they reached her door. Jay smiled back, grateful for Moose's steady presence.
Veronica opened the door before they could knock, her expression a mix of determination and relief. "Finally, you're here. Come in."
They stepped inside to see Josie McCoy sitting on Veronica's plush couch, her legs crossed, exuding an air of confidence. Jay immediately recognized her from the posters and music videos he'd seen of Josie and the Pussycats. Her presence commanded attention.
"Jay, Moose, meet Josie McCoy," Veronica said, gesturing to Josie. "Josie, this is Jay Halstead and Moose Mason."
Josie extended her hand toward Jay, her smile professional but warm. "Nice to meet you, Jay. Veronica's told me a bit about you."
Jay shook her hand, nodding. "Likewise. It's good to meet you too. Moose has been singing your praises since we left my apartment."
"Guilty as charged," Moose said with a grin.
They all chuckled before Josie leaned forward, her curiosity piqued. "So, Jay, what brings you to Riverdale? It's not every day we get someone with your background moving to our little chaotic town."
Jay hesitated for a moment but decided to be honest. "I needed a fresh start. I used to work for the Chicago Police Department, but I got fired, and my personal life fell apart after that. My wife—ex-wife now—asked for a divorce, and I figured it was time to leave everything behind and try something new."
Josie nodded thoughtfully. "That's heavy, but it sounds like you're building something solid here. I can tell you've got people who have your back."
"Yeah," Jay said, glancing at Moose, who gave him a supportive smile. "I do."
The conversation lightened momentarily before Veronica cleared her throat, her expression shifting to one of focus. "Alright, let's get down to business. Josie, I've told you about Hailey Upton and her manipulative games. I was thinking your performance tonight at La Bonne Nuit could be the perfect distraction to lure her out."
Josie nodded but leaned back, her finger tapping thoughtfully against her chin. "I've got a better idea. Instead of just distracting her, we plant the seeds of her downfall during the performance. Let her think she's in control while we set up the trap."
Moose raised an eyebrow. "What kind of trap?"
Josie smiled slyly. "I'll get into it, but let's just say my band and I are good at pulling attention away from the chaos we're actually creating. It's all about keeping her focus where we want it."
Veronica grinned. "I love it. This is why I called you, Josie."
As they continued to strategize, Jay's phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and frowned. "It's from Hailey."
He read the message aloud: "Sierra McCoy is on my side now. Paid her off to thwart your little plans. Good luck with that."
Josie's eyes narrowed as she immediately pulled out her phone. "That's not true. My mom would never. She's smarter than that."
She texted her mother, explaining Hailey's claim and urging her not to listen to any lies. Moments later, Sierra replied.
Sierra: Hailey's lying. She reached out to me, but I shut her down. I've got your back, Josie.
Josie exhaled in relief, showing the text to the group. "Nice try, Hailey."
Jay, his patience wearing thin, texted Hailey directly: "Leave my friends, Moose, and Josie alone. You've done enough damage."
Hailey replied almost instantly: "Not a chance, Jay. This is just getting started."
Jay clenched his jaw, but Moose placed a calming hand on his arm. "Don't let her get to you. We've got this."
Moose leaned forward, catching everyone's attention. "I've been thinking... instead of just distracting her, why don't we use her own ego against her? She thinks she's smarter than everyone in this room, so let's give her a reason to overplay her hand."
Veronica raised an eyebrow. "Go on."
Moose continued, "What if we set up the performance as a trap, but instead of making it obvious, we use someone she doesn't suspect to lure her into a confrontation? Someone like—"
Before Moose could finish, Jay's phone buzzed again. This time, it was a group message from Cheryl Blossom.
Cheryl: It's go time. La Bonne Nuit is ready for tonight. Be sexy. Be scandalous. Let's set the stage.
Everyone chuckled at Cheryl's dramatic flair, but their laughter was short-lived as another text from Hailey came through.
Hailey: Hiram and I are working together now. We're going to destroy all your friendships, Jay. And your little romance with Moose? It's over.
Veronica's hands balled into fists as she stood, her voice shaking with fury. "That's it. We're ending her. Tonight."
The room erupted in agreement, and as they finalized their plans, the determination in their voices was clear: Hailey's manipulative games would end, one way or another.
