Jay Halstead-Mason stirred the creamy carbonara sauce on the stove, Moose Mason chopping parsley beside him. Their young son, Kit Halstead-Mason, sat at the table, giggling as he colored on a placemat.
"This is going to be the best dinner ever," Moose said, tossing the parsley into the sauce.
"Carbonara night never fails," Jay added, tasting the sauce with a grin. "Perfect."
Suddenly, flames burst from beneath the stove.
"Jay!" Moose shouted, grabbing Kit and pulling him away from the table as the fire alarm blared.
"Call 911!" Jay yelled, grabbing a fire extinguisher and trying to control the flames. Kit burst into tears, clinging to Moose.
Veronica Lodge and Gabriel were in their next-door apartment when the smell of smoke hit them. Veronica froze mid-laugh at one of Gabriel's jokes.
"Do you smell that?" she asked.
Gabriel rushed to the window and looked outside. "It's coming from Jay and Moose's place."
They ran to the hallway just as fire trucks pulled up. Jay and Moose stood outside, Moose holding a sobbing Kit, while Jay spoke with firefighters.
"We'll get through this," Moose reassured Kit, even as his own nerves frayed. Jay rubbed his temples, feeling the weight of bad luck crushing him.
Meanwhile, across town, Betty Cooper sat at the dining room table, trying to talk to Alice.
"Mom, I've been trying to reach you all day," Betty said. "I need your advice."
Alice gave her a cold glance. "Advice? Try seeing a therapist instead."
Betty reeled back, hurt. "Why are you being so distant?"
Alice waved her hand dismissively. "You can't rely on me forever, Betty. Handle your own problems."
Toni Topaz sat in her car outside the building where her job interview was supposed to be, staring at the time on her phone. She had missed it by twenty minutes thanks to an unexpected traffic jam.
She slammed her hand against the steering wheel. "This can't be happening."
Her phone buzzed with a message from Cheryl. "How did the interview go? I know you nailed it!" Toni couldn't even bring herself to reply.
The next morning, Veronica woke up in bed next to Gabriel. He leaned over, planting a kiss on her shoulder.
"How about round two?" he asked, grinning.
Veronica hesitated, pulling the blanket tighter around her. "I... I can't, Gabriel. Something's wrong."
Gabriel frowned. "Are you okay? What's wrong?"
"I don't know," Veronica admitted, her voice shaking. "I feel... off. Like my body's betraying me."
Betty's day took an even worse turn when she found herself pulled over by police while driving to the Riverdale High gym for a volunteer event. A high schooler had been hit earlier that morning, and her car matched the description.
"Miss Cooper, step out of the vehicle," the officer said.
"What? This is a mistake!" Betty protested as she was handcuffed. "I didn't hit anyone!"
Her pleas fell on deaf ears as she was placed in the back of the police car, her stomach churning.
Archie Andrews was at his house when Uncle Frank stormed in, waving a paper in the air.
"What the hell is this?" Frank yelled, throwing the IRS penalty notice onto the table.
Archie looked at it, his face paling. "I don't know anything about this."
"Well, you better figure it out!" Frank bellowed. "You've got the IRS breathing down your neck, and guess who they came to first? Me!"
As evening approached, the gang gathered at Pop's Chock-lit Shoppe to share their struggles.
"I don't know what's happening," Jay said, holding Moose's hand. "It's like everything is going wrong at once."
Betty sighed, her hands trembling. "I was arrested for something I didn't even do."
Veronica leaned on the counter. "Gabriel doesn't know what's going on with me. I don't know what's going on with me."
"It's the eclipse," Toni muttered. "I told you it would bring bad luck."
"You were joking," Cheryl said, but her tone was uncertain.
"Was I?" Toni shot back, her frustration evident.
Archie leaned forward. "If this is bad luck, it's hitting us all hard. We need to figure out how to break it before things get worse."
The group nodded in agreement, but a heavy silence lingered. The string of misfortune was relentless, and they could only hope their bond was strong enough to endure it.
