Chapter 9: The First Step of the Journey

Today was the day—the day I'd been preparing for my entire life. Just a few days before my fourteenth birthday, I passed my Trainer License exam. That little card now resting in my pocket felt like a ticket to freedom, adventure, and everything I'd ever dreamed of since Arceus brought me to this world. My gear was ready, all thanks to the long hours I'd put into earning pocket money at Dad's shop. I'd saved up enough for five Pokéballs, a small stock of potions, and, as a final treat, I'd ordered a custom child-sized version of the Pokémon Ranger outfit from Omega Ruby. It arrived just in time for my birthday, and it fit perfectly. I felt prepared.

While I knew the League stipend would help me cover most expenses, I preferred to be cautious, saving every bit I could for surprises along the way. And this morning, I had another gift to add to my inventory. Mom and Dad had surprised me with a new bag—one enhanced with extended-space technology, which meant it could hold far more items than its size would suggest. They'd also included a portable Pokéblock machine to keep Lycanroc's energy up and any future teammates I'd catch. It was perfect, more than I could have hoped for, and I couldn't wait to start using it.

My journey's first stop was clear in my mind. I'd be heading to Wedgehurst, where Leon would return today to visit his family, and Gloria, the future Galarian champion, would pick her starter Pokémon. I'd heard she lived in Postwick, meaning this world really was a mix of both the games and the anime. My first plan of action? Catch a Wooloo or, even better, a Galarian Zigzagoon. I'd had my eye on the latter, knowing it would be a solid addition with its Dark/Normal typing and its future evolution into Obstagoon.

I spent the morning saying goodbye to Mom and Dad, who were both proud yet emotional as I packed up. They'd always known this day was coming, but that didn't make it any easier. We had one last breakfast together, then my parents walked me to the door, their own Pokémon by their sides.

"We're proud of you, Tom," Dad said, his voice steady, though his eyes were a bit misty. "Don't forget to send us messages when you're able. And remember, there's always a warm meal here waiting for you."

Mom hugged me tightly, a familiar warmth that I knew would stay with me long after I left. "Take care of yourself—and your Pokémon," she whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from my face. "You're ready, Tom. Remember that."

After our goodbyes, I sent a message to Sonia and Marnie, letting them know where I was headed. Sonia replied quickly, asking me to stop by her grandma's lab so she could update my Rotom Phone with the Pokédex app. Marnie's response made me grin. She'd already started her journey a few days ago with her Morepeko and told me I'd have to hurry if I wanted to keep up.

With my plan set, I pulled out my phone to check Leon's schedule. As soon as I got the notification that he was on his way to Wedgehurst, I headed for the Corviknight taxi station, ready to book a ride. Galar was vast, and the trip to Wedgehurst from Spikemuth would take too long on foot, but with Corviknight's speed, I'd make it there in time for the main event.

As we soared above the rolling hills and fields, I marveled at the sheer beauty of the Galar region from above. Fields stretched as far as I could see, dotted with the occasional Pokémon—Wooloo grazing, Rookidee flying in flocks, and even a few Yamper racing through the grass. The excitement of finally being on my way to start my journey buzzed through me like electricity.

Before long, the familiar silhouette of Wedgehurst came into view, its quaint buildings nestled against a backdrop of trees and fields. The Corviknight landed smoothly, and I hopped off, giving a quick thanks to the driver. With Lycanroc by my side, I walked down the path to Professor Magnolia's lab, where Sonia was waiting outside, a grin on her face as she waved.

"Tom! Good to see you!" she greeted, her Yamper barking in excitement.

"Hey, Sonia! Thanks for updating my Rotom Phone with the Pokédex app," I said, pulling out my device. She took it and tapped a few buttons, downloading the necessary updates.

"There you go! And… all set!" She handed it back, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Starting your journey at the same time as Gloria, huh? Smart move. And who knows, maybe you two will cross paths along the way."

I grinned. "That's the plan. I'll take any advantage I can get!"

We chatted for a few more minutes about my plans and her recent research, then said our goodbyes. With my Pokédex now fully functional, I was one step closer to officially beginning my journey. I felt ready, energized, like I could take on the world.

Making my way to the edge of Wedgehurst, I kept an eye out for any sign of Leon's arrival. Sure enough, after a short wait, I saw his signature Charizard flying down, landing near his family's home just outside of town. My heart pounded as I watched Gloria run up to meet him, her excitement evident even from a distance. Soon, I'd get to witness her first Pokémon battle against Leon's younger brother, Hop.

With Lycanroc by my side, I found a comfortable spot under a tree where I could watch the upcoming battle. My journey had officially begun, and I was ready to face every challenge it would bring.
