Chapter 2
Preparations
NINETEEN YEARS LATER
"Excuse me. I'm coming through," Olaf called as he ran through the hallways, trying to avoid bumping into any passing staff. He was carrying an envelope for the Queen of Arrendella.
As he ran down the hall into the vast throne room, he bumped into a tall, rugged, muscular man dressed in mountain clothing.
"Whoa, steady on Olaf."
"Oh. Hello, Your Royal Majesty." Olaf bowed at Kristoff and began to grovel at his feet.
"We've been over this Olaf. You don't have to grovel, nor do you have to refer to me as your majesty. You can still call me Kristoff."
"Oh, right. I forgot." He shot up.
"For the seventh-sixth time." A passing cinnamon hair maid commented, rolling her green eyes.
"Anyway, what's the rush?" He asked.
"This letter came for Anna." The snowman held out his twig hand, revealing it was empty. "Ah! I've lost it!"
"Other hand." Kristoff pointed.
Olaf looked at his other hand. "Oh, silly me." He chuckled before handing over the letter to him. "Any idea where she is?"
"Sure. She's in the kitchen."
They headed off, Olaf ambling behind the Prince.
Anna was talking to the head chef about the meal for the upcoming royal ball.
"And finally, the pièce de résistance. Le gâteau double chocolat avec glaçage supplémentaire." (The double chocolate cake with extra icing.) He jesterd to an enormous cake.
"It looks incredible. Excellent work, as usual, Peter."
"Merci, Votre Majesté." (Thank you, Your Majesty) The obese French cook bellowed then returned to his work.
She exited the kitchen just as her husband and her friend arrived.
"Anna, Anna!" Olaf called as he rushed towards her, nearly slipping.
"Careful Olaf." She said, catching him, before straightening his carrot nose.
"Thanks. This came for you." He held out his empty hand.
"Um."
"Other hand," Kristoff said.
"Oh right." he handed her the envelope. Anna opened it and read the latter.
"What does it say? Who's it from?" The snowman asked.
"It's from the kingdom of Hiemquata." She stated.
She read the letter in her head. While she did Olaf spotted the tasty dessert. He tiptoed into the kitchen while the cooks were occupied.
"Ne touchez pas le gâteau Olaf!" (Don't touch the cake, Olaf!) Peter yelled when the snowman was just about to take a slice.
Olaf backed away and returned to his friends, muttering a silent "darn it."
When Anna got to the end her smile slowly dropped.
"Anna?" Kristoff asked, concerned.
"The King and Queen can't attend the ball due to political obligations. They're sending over their son, Prince Elias."
Kristoff and Olaf looked at each other, unsure what to say next. It was well known that Anna wasn't the biggest fan of Princes ever since the Han incident. Over the years, she had to meet with a few mainly when visiting other kingdoms, but she was always suspicious of them. Even the kindest of them couldn't fully earn her trust.
Kristoff gently put a comforting hand on her shoulder. "It'll be fine Anna." He reassured her, but she wasn't convinced.
"Do you think we could have Mattias double the guards?"
"Anna, you don't need to worry. The chances of him being a threat are a million to one."
"And what if it is the one?"
"He won't be."
"How do you know that?"
"Because, only one Prince has stabbed you in the back, while none of the others hasn't."
"Yet."
He shook his head. "Well, I doubt he has any plans to kill you."
She hummed unsure.
"Of course, we can always cancel the ball if you want." He jibbed.
"Absolutely not." She firmly stated. "You know how the kingdom has been looking forward to this for months."
"I knew you'd come to your senses." He teased earning a chuckle.
"Besides, it means I get to see Elsa again." Then she realised something. "Um, Olaf."
"Yes." He said.
"You did give Gale the letter for Elsa?"
"What letter?"
"The one telling her about the ball we gave you three months ago." Kristoff reminded, having a knowing feeling where this was going.
"Um. I think so."
"You think or you know?" Anna asked worriedly.
"What colour was it?" Olaf shrugged.
"I'll call for Gale while you write a new one," Kristoff said before going to get the wind spirit.
"Olaf."
"I swear I didn't mean to forget."
"I know, but this is happening too often. I give you an important task and then you don't do it."
"I know, but I promise it won't happen again."
"You keep saying that, only to do it again."
"Oh come on, give me another chance." He was pleased with puppy dog eyes.
"Alright, but this is your last chance, got it."
"Got it."
"Alright then. If you excuse me, I've got a letter to write." She left Olaf to return to her room.
"Gale!" Kristoff called in the yard. "Gale, we need you!"
Inside the stables, Sven was munching on some hay. He was about to take another bite when a cold breeze flew through the open top door, making him shake. He looked bewildered. It wasn't uncommon for a nippy wind to blow during early Spring, but this one was more of a winter wind. He turned to eat again only to stop when he spotted an unusual-looking snowflake lying on the pile of hay. He sniffed it only to sneeze when some hay got up his nostrils.
"Gale!"
Sven headed over to his friend.
"Hey, buddy." Kristoff greeted, patting the reindeer's head.
Anna came into the yard with the new invitation when Gale swooped in.
"Hey, Gale." She welcomed.
"Thanks for coming on such short notice," Kristoff added.
"Could give this Elsa. It's for the ball tonight." She handed Gale the letter. The wind spirit nodded her leaves and sped off.
"Thanks, Gale!" Anna called out.
Elsa was by the river with the Nokk when Gale arrived. She circled Elsa earning a chuckle then handed her the letter.
"Thank you." She said then read the invitation.
Dear Elsa.
Sorry for the late notice. We're having a royal ball tonight and would love it if you could attend.
Sincerely,
Anna
She looked at the Nokk. "Olaf must have forgotten to send the original one."
The waterhorse shook its head.
"Wait here. I'll be back shortly." She left to inform Yelena that she would be in Arendelle this evening. Just then a cold breeze blew past her, making her long hair fly. She blinked in surprise before turning back. "Gale!"
Gale moved in a way that said, "It wasn't me."
"Then who was it?"
The wind shrugged.
Another cold breeze whooshed by, spinning Gale. When it stopped a single snowflake fell to the ground beside her feet. She kneed down and examined the snowflake.
"How is that possible?"
The wind picked up again and carried the snowflake. She watched as the icy star flew toward Arendella.
