Chapter 8: The Zigzag Path

Tom, Gloria, and Hop continued on the path leading out of Wedgehurst, the beginning of their adventure ahead. Their hearts were full of excitement, the weight of their first steps in the world of Pokémon settling on their shoulders. Despite the calm air, the buzz of anticipation was palpable.

"Can you believe it?" Hop said, practically bouncing along the trail. "We're really starting our journey! First, we'll head toward Route 1 and see what Pokémon we find. Maybe I'll run into a Pidgey or a Rookidee, eh?"

"I think I'll wait to catch something until we get to the next town," Gloria said, grinning as she glanced at her Sobble, who trotted happily beside her. "But I've heard rumors of a few wild Pokémon around here, so we'll see what catches our eye."

Tom, walking just a step behind them with Lycanroc by his side, smiled at his new traveling companions. He was glad to be starting his journey at the same time as them, and he had to admit, the prospect of discovering new Pokémon was something he'd always dreamed of. He adjusted the strap of his bag, his mind wandering to the plans he'd made. If all went well, his first team would be expanding soon.

As they made their way down the path, the sound of their footsteps echoed in the quiet countryside, but there was something else—something faint. A rustling in the nearby grass caught their attention, and before anyone could react, a small, black-and-white striped Pokémon darted out of the underbrush, sniffing the air like a curious child. It was a Galarian Zigzagoon, looking around with a bit of confusion before locking eyes on Tom.

"Oi, what's this?" Hop asked, stopping in his tracks. "That Zigzagoon looks a bit... curious."

Tom, who'd been keeping an eye on the ground ahead, noticed the small Pokémon immediately. His bag, filled with Pokéblocks, had inadvertently left behind a faint, irresistible scent. The Galarian Zigzagoon sniffed the air again, its nose twitching as it followed the trail of the smell.

Tom smirked to himself, having expected this moment. "Seems like I've been making too many Pokéblocks," he muttered to himself.

Tom's telepathic abilities had been steadily growing over the last few years, and now, he was able to communicate with Pokémon in ways that felt like second nature. He wasn't sure if the Zigzagoon would trust him, but it had already caught its attention.

The Zigzagoon paused for a moment, sniffing the air in delight. Then it waddled over, its eyes bright and curious. Tom focused, extending his mind toward the small Pokémon.

Hey there, little one, Tom thought, his voice calm and inviting.

Zigzagoon's ears perked up, and it took another cautious step closer to Tom. It sniffed the air again, its curiosity growing.

I've got something that might interest you, Tom continued telepathically. I've got some treats here, and you look like you could use a snack. How about it? Want to join me on my adventure? I could use a partner like you.

The Zigzagoon blinked in surprise, clearly startled at hearing a voice inside its mind. It looked up at Tom with a mix of suspicion and interest. The Pokémon hesitated for a moment but then seemed to lose its resolve, its stomach rumbling.

Pokéblocks... it thought back, the idea too tempting to ignore. Zigzagoon shuffled closer and gave Tom a pleading look.

Tom chuckled. I'll give you some, but first, you'll need to come with me. You'll be part of my team. What do you say?

There was a moment of stillness, then the Zigzagoon nodded, making its decision. It was clearly a little gluttonous, but Tom had always known that sometimes, food was the key to a Pokémon's heart. With a determined gleam in its eye, Zigzagoon bounded forward and hopped straight into the Pokéball that Tom tossed in its direction.

The ball wobbled for a second, then clicked shut.

"Well, that's a first," Hop said, his eyes wide with disbelief. "You just... talked to it? That was amazing! I've never seen anyone do that before!"

Gloria's eyes were also wide with surprise. "Aye, that was somethin'! I've never seen anyone get a Pokémon to join that easily."

Tom grinned, the warmth of the moment settling over him. "It wasn't that hard. I've got a bit of a knack for talking to Pokémon, you could say."

He tossed the Pokéball in the air, letting Zigzagoon out once more. The Galarian Zigzagoon immediately scurried around Tom's feet, its tail wagging furiously. It made a few excited zigzags in a circle, as if to show off its agility.

"Well, aren't you energetic," Tom said, reaching down to give the little Pokémon a scratch behind its ears. "I'll take that as a 'yes.' You're part of the team now, little guy."

The Zigzagoon responded by making a happy sound and bounding around Tom's feet in a flurry of energy. He could already tell it had a mischievous side. In fact, it looked like it could eat through Tom's entire supply of Pokéblocks if given the chance.

"That one's gonna be trouble," Hop chuckled, shaking his head. "But I can tell you'll have a blast with it. Zigzagoon's a good pick."

"Aye, but make sure ye don't feed him too much, or he'll get out of hand!" Gloria added with a grin, watching the little Pokémon bounce around.

Tom let out a laugh, feeling the warmth of the moment. His journey had truly begun, and with a new team member, he was ready for whatever lay ahead. But first things first: the next plot point in their adventure.

"Let's keep moving," Tom said, slinging his bag over his shoulder. "We've still got a ways to go before we hit the next town."

With a final playful bark from Zigzagoon, the three Trainers—plus one overenthusiastic Pokémon—continued down the road. As they walked, Tom couldn't help but feel the growing excitement for what awaited them ahead.

And though he wasn't sure what else the journey would throw his way, one thing was for certain: things were only going to get more interesting from here.
