Chapter 9: New Bonds and Challenges

The group continued down Route 1, with the wind gently rustling the tall grasses and the occasional rustle of Pokémon hidden just out of sight. Tom walked ahead, his newly caught Galarian Zigzagoon bouncing energetically around his feet, while Lycanroc trotted at his side, ever vigilant and calm. Hop and Gloria were just behind him, both chatting excitedly about the Pokémon they hoped to encounter along the way.

"Don't let that Zigzagoon get too wild now, Tom," Hop called out with a smirk, watching the energetic Pokémon dart in and out of the grass. "I've seen one of those get into trouble in a blink."

Tom chuckled, glancing down at Zigzagoon, who had already begun trying to climb up his legs. "I think we're going to have a bit of a challenge keeping up with it," he said, gently nudging the Zigzagoon down before it could start nibbling on his Pokéblock pouch. "But we'll make it work."

Gloria laughed, her Sobble hopping alongside her. "Aye, Zigzagoon's always known for its speedy little legs, but it'll be good to have it along for the ride." She shot a playful glance at Hop. "Now, Hop, don't get too cocky with your Grookey just because it's strong."

Hop grinned back. "Oh, don't worry! Grookey and I are more than ready for whatever comes our way!"

Tom smiled at their playful banter but felt the thrill of his own Pokémon growing stronger as the miles passed. He glanced at Lycanroc, who had grown even more graceful since evolving. His Midnight Form was a true sight to behold, and Tom was proud of how far they'd come together. Lycanroc gave him a small nudge with his paw, a silent sign of support.

As the trio trekked further, they came across a patch of dense trees, their leafy branches creating a canopy that blocked out much of the sunlight. The path narrowed here, and Tom couldn't help but notice how everything seemed to fall into place—the tranquility, the cool breeze, and the sounds of Pokémon all around.

Suddenly, the unmistakable flutter of wings could be heard above them. Tom looked up just as a Rookidee soared down into the clearing, landing nimbly on a nearby fence post. It cocked its head at them, its curious gaze fixed on the group.

"Well, well, looks like we've got a new friend," Hop said with a grin, glancing over at Tom. "You ready for another battle?"

Tom nodded, a determined look in his eyes. "I'll give it a shot. Let's see if we can add another Pokémon to the team."

He glanced at Lycanroc, who seemed eager to step in but was clearly aware of the potential mismatch. Tom had trained his partner to know when to hold back, and today would be one of those times. He wasn't going to make this battle too easy.

"Zigzagoon, time for your first battle!" Tom called out, sending the tiny Pokémon forward with a burst of energy.

Zigzagoon scampered into the open, its fluffy tail high in the air. It seemed ready to take on anything, though it hadn't quite figured out the whole battle thing yet. Still, Tom was confident it would pull through.

"Alright, Zigzagoon! Let's start with Tackle!" Tom instructed, his voice calm yet firm. The small Pokémon charged forward with surprising speed, its body quickly closing the gap between itself and the Rookidee. With a puff of energy, it slammed into the Rookidee's side, sending it briefly tumbling.

Rookidee chirped angrily, shaking off the blow and taking to the air once again. It swooped down quickly, launching a Peck attack aimed right for Zigzagoon.

"Zigzagoon, dodge it and use Tackle again!" Tom called, keeping his focus sharp.

Zigzagoon rolled to the side, just narrowly avoiding Rookidee's sharp beak. With a quick spin, it used its momentum to slam into Rookidee once more, this time knocking it back several feet.

Rookidee wobbled on its feet, clearly not used to such a scrappy opponent, but it was far from out of the fight. It flapped its wings hard, gaining height as it circled the battle area.

"Keep your guard up!" Tom said, narrowing his eyes. "Don't let it get too much distance."

Zigzagoon responded with a determined yip and crouched low, preparing to follow up. But before it could charge again, the Rookidee dove down with another Peck, its wings cutting through the air with precision.

"Dodge and use Growl!" Tom commanded, desperate to weaken the incoming attack.

Zigzagoon rolled to the side, avoiding the sharp beak by inches. With a sharp bark, it released a loud Growl that reverberated through the area. Rookidee faltered slightly, its attack weakening as the sound threw it off balance.

"Now, Zigzagoon, finish it off with Tackle!"

With one last burst of energy, Zigzagoon surged forward, knocking Rookidee back with enough force to make it stagger and finally land on the ground with a soft thud. The tiny Pokémon looked up at Tom with bright, proud eyes. Zigzagoon had done it—this little glutton had proven it had some fight in it.

"Well done, Zigzagoon!" Tom praised, returning it to its Pokéball with a smile.

Hop let out a laugh, clearly impressed. "Blimey, that little Zigzagoon's got some fight! Can't believe it took down a Rookidee like that."

Gloria grinned, giving Tom an approving nod. "Aye, it's always good to start off with a strong team. Looks like you're off to a good start."

Tom smiled, looking down at the still-wobbly Rookidee. It had been a tough fight, but the little bird hadn't been able to keep up with Zigzagoon's unpredictable speed and scrappy attitude. As it struggled to get back on its feet, Tom's gaze softened. There was something about Rookidee's determination that reminded him of himself. He wasn't about to let it go without a chance.

"Hey, you did great too," Tom said to the Rookidee, his voice calm. "How about joining us on this journey?"

Rookidee cocked its head again, its curiosity piqued. Tom pulled out an empty Pokéball and tossed it gently, the sphere opening with a flash of light. It landed next to the Rookidee with a soft thud.

For a long moment, Rookidee stared at the Pokéball, unsure. Then, it hopped toward the ball, nudging it with its beak as if to test it. A flash of light enveloped the Rookidee, and the ball wobbled before it clicked firmly, capturing the bird Pokémon.

"Yes!" Tom cheered, pumping his fist in the air. "Rookidee, welcome to the team!"

Hop laughed and clapped his hands. "Blimey, looks like we've got a full squad going now!"

Gloria smiled, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "Aye, Tom, you've got yourself a fine team. And that Rookidee's got some spirit—it'll be fun to see what it can do!"

Tom smiled as he returned the Pokéball to his belt. "Thanks, guys. This journey's shaping up to be something incredible already."

With the group's spirits high, they continued down the road, eager for the next adventure. Tom's team was growing, and he was more determined than ever to explore every corner of Galar, make new friends, and discover the limitless potential of his Pokémon.

The journey was just beginning, and already Tom knew there was nothing that would stop him.
