Arc I: Choice
Chapter One: Split Sides
Genma stared at Elder Kho Lon. He glared at her and looked away. His shoulders slumped. He heard her walk closer to his daughter.
"I see you sense that I am a martial artist myself," praised Elder Kho Lon as she saw Ranma look intrigued. She gave Genma a serious look. "I must inform you that if you run away from this Mr. Saotome," as he looked at her again. "That the penalty is three years of prison, and I'll seal away your ability to fight with an Ultimate Weakness Moxibustion."
"You wouldn't," gasped Genma as he looked torn. His fear showed, he stood next to Ranma, and he hung his head down in defeat.
"Pops?" Ranma asked as she looked confused. She continued to dry herself off with the towel. She took a deep breath. "Why are you scared?"
"Elder Kho Lon is a master of martial arts," explained Mr. Luó as he saw Ranma's eyes brighten. "She's very skilled."
"Oh, I see now," gushed Ranma. "How exciting."
"Shut your mouth, boy," growled Genma as he glared at his daughter. "I don't want to hear your girly voice anymore," as Ranma's eyes grew misty.
"Now. Now, Mr. Saotome. There is no reason to admonish your child," lectured Elder Kho Lon. She shook her head. "She's done nothing wrong and neither have you unless you wish for trouble," as she saw Genma gulp. "I must inform you. I know that you are a former student of Grandmaster Happosai? Yes?" She saw Genma nod. "Thought so," as she took a breath.
Genma trembled in fear as he heard Elder Kho Lon mention the name of his former master. He looked up at her in shock, fear, and horror.
"Elder Kho Lon?" Mr. Luó asked as she looked at him. He looked at the time on his smartphone and motioned her attention. "It's time I get back to work," as he saw her nod in agreement. "I see you got this well under control…Bye," as he waved bye to Genma, Ranma, and Elder Kho Lon. They waved back and bowed. He gave a bow and turned around…
Genma, Ranma, and Elder Kho Lon saw Mr. Luó walking off along the dirt road to his hut in the far distance. Elder Kho Lon took a breath and gave Genma and Ranma a serious look.
"I must inform you Mr. Saotome," huffed Elder Kho Lon. Her green eyes sparkled. "You have no chance of beating me in a fight or running away." She turned around and began to walk along another dirt road. "Well? Shall we get going. Follow me."
"Okay," obeyed Ranma as she followed Elder Kho Lon.
"Grr. If I must," growled Genma as he followed her. They walked along the dirt road for a few minutes till they spotted a large hut near a paved road. Elder Kho Lon reached the front door and turned around. "Now what?"
"Mr. Saotome," began Elder Kho Lon. "You can wait here," as she pointed to a chair. She gave a serious look. "You may sit down," as she looked at Ranma next. "Come child. Follow me," as she walked into the hut.
"Okay," exhaled Ranma as she followed Elder Kho Lon into the hut. Ranma and Elder Kho Lon sat down and took off their shoes. Elder Kho Lon and Ranma stood up. Elder Kho Lon led Ranma into the living room, down a small hallway until they reached the bathroom. "What's next, Elder Kho Lon?"
"At least for now," soothed Elder Kho Lon as she bent down to look Ranma into her eyes. "I'll need you to dress in the pink blouse, skirt, panties, and socks, child," as she saw Ranma grow wide eyed.
"Those are," sputtered Ranma as she grew bright red. "Are girl's clothes…"
"I am well aware," explained Elder Kho Lon. "One your clothes are wet," as she saw Ranma nod in agreement. "Two it is required until you and your father meet a Japanese government official," as she saw Ranma sigh, shake her head, and nod.
"I don't like this," sighed Ranma as her blush faded. "But I won't cause you any trouble," as she took a deep breath. She walked into the bathroom. She turned around and faced Elder Kho Lon. "How long will I have to be dressed as a girl?"
"That is partly up to you," replied Elder Kho Lon as she saw Ranma looked confused. Elder Kho Lon lightly chuckled and gave a smile. "One question you'll be asked soon is if you want to continue to attend compulsory education as a girl or be homeschooled as a boy," as she gently touched Ranma's right shoulder. "I'd think long and hard about what you want."
"Oh, I see," mused Ranma as she looked thoughtful. "Is this choice mine to make?"
"That's right," affirmed Elder Kho Lon as she gave a comforting smile. "Don't let your father influence your choice, child."
"Got it," gushed Ranma. She saw Elder Kho Lon stand up. She left the bathroom and closed the door.
(I wonder what I should pick.) Ranma thought. (On one hand it is horrible to be a girl now.) She looked at the clothes before her. She took off her wet clothes and stared at herself in the mirror. (On the other hand. I do like going to school.) She grabbed a towel and dried herself off more. She placed the towel up to dry.
(I think I get what is going on.) Ranma thought. (The adults are making sure that Pops does not run from this.) She put on her panties. Next, she put on her blouse, skirt, and socks. She looked into the mirror. She studied her new look. (I look cute.)
(No doubt, Pops will be upset.) Ranma thought. (Of course, he always gets worked up over the silliest things.) She stifled a giggle and examined herself for a moment before she walked out of the bathroom with her dirty clothes in her right hand…
Ranma left the bathroom. She looked up at Elder Kho Lon. She took a deep breath. Elder Kho Lon held out her hand and gave Ranma a smile.
"What do I do with my wet and dirty clothes?" Ranma asked as she looked up at Elder Kho. She took a deep breath.
"Hand them to me," explained Elder Kho Lon. Ranma gave a nod and handed them to her. "Follow me," as she walked down the hallway and back to the living room. Elder Kho Lon pointed to a couch. "It'll be about half an hour or so before our ride gets here," as she saw Ranma sit down. "In the meantime, I'll dry your wet clothes."
"Okay," gushed Ranma as she sat down on the couch. She heard Elder Kho Lon put her clothes in a dryer and turn the machine on. Elder Kho Lon walked over to Ranma as she sat down. She saw Elder Kho Lon walking back to the front door. She opened the front door.
"Mr. Saotome," exhaled Elder Kho Lon. "You may come in now," as she saw Genma stand up. He walked in and his eyes grew wide as he saw the outfit his daughter was wearing.
"Boy," shouted Genma as he grew angry. "How…"
"I'd stop right now," lectured Elder Kho Lon as she stared down Genma. She saw him gulp in fear. "Your daughter is following the law," as he looked confused. "Surely you must know about the regulations of Jusenkyo?"
"Like I care," sputtered Genma as he grew angrier. "Now I am done humoring you all regarding this little incident."
"This will be my last warning," explained Elder Kho Lon as she grew serious. "I won't warn you again," as she saw Genma pause in slight fear. "Unless you wish to lose all your strength and go to jail?" She pointed to a chair. "Now please sit while we wait for our ride."
"Fine," growled Genma as he sat down. He looked the other way from his daughter as he waited for the next step to begin…
Ranma, Genma, and Elder Kho Lon waited outside the hut as an orange car came into view. The car parked before them. The driver stepped out. She had brown hair and brown eyes. She wore a black dress that fell to her knees. She wore black socks and sneakers.
"May I introduce Hua Wèi," began Elder Kho Lon. "Miss Wèi," as she looked at Elder Kho Lon. "Genma and Ranma Saotome."
"Pleased to meet you," gushed Miss Wèi as she gave a courteous smile. "I'll be driving you to the airport," as she shook Ranma and Genma's right hands with her right hand.
"Thanks," exhaled Ranma as she gave a smile back. "Your time is appreciated."
"Ugh, thanks," sighed Genma as he refused to acknowledge her. He walked behind Elder Kho Lon and put their backpacks in the trunk. Elder Kho Lon closed the trunk.
"We should get going," explained Miss Wèi as she opened the right side for Ranma. She made a nod and Ranma got into the car. Genma got into the left side and Elder Kho Lon sat in the passenger's seat. Miss Wèi walked to the driver's seat and started the car…
Miss Wèi began to drive the car. She drove down the road for several minutes until she got onto an on ramp and onto a busy highway.
"We'll be in the city in about an hour," explained Miss Wèi as she began to speed up the car she was driving.
Elder Kho Lon turned around and faced Genma and Ranma and gave each a serious smile. She took a breath, sighed, and closed her eyes for a moment.
"So, for starters," began Elder Kho Lon. "Normally you can change back to a boy with hot water," as Ranma's eyes grew wide. "And back to a girl with cold water."
"Then why all this song and dance?" Genma asked as he growled in pure anger. "If the answer is this simple?"
"Someone else needs to talk to us, Pops," explained Ranma. "That is why," as she saw Elder Kho Lon smile at her. "Right?"
"That's right," praised Elder Kho Lon. "You are a sharp girl to remember what we talked about earlier." She saw Ranma blush. She pulled out a ruby necklace. She gave a smile to Ranma. "This necklace, Ranma," as she handed it to Ranma. "When worn will keep hot water from turning you back to a boy. It does not stop you from turning into a girl. Please wear it."
"Do not," yelled Genma as his loud voice startled his daughter. He saw her tear up and glare at him. She looked at her father and put the necklace on. "Why did you not listen, Ranma?" He saw Ranma wipe away her first tear that formed. He saw Elder Kho Lon face forward again and shake her head.
"Maybe, Pops," cried Ranma. "I'm already emotional from everything going on," as she looked away. She cried for a few minutes as Genma looked the other way. A few minutes later she settled down. "You taught me to obey adults, Pop," as he looked at her with wide eyes. "I don't want to cause trouble. I want to be a good girl. Why can't you behave?"
Ranma looked away from her father as she looked outside the window once more. Several minutes passed by in silence when Elder Kho Lon faced the back seat once more. She cleared her throat and Ranma looked in her direction as her father did.
"Feeling better, girl?" Elder Kho Lon asked as she saw Ranma's still misty eyes from her earlier crying.
"A bit," sniffled Ranma as she saw Genma shake his head. Ranma's body trembled in embarrassment from her earlier crying.
"Act like a man," roared Genma as he saw Miss Wèi shake her head.
"Ranma is hardly a boy right now," exhaled Miss Wèi as she passed by a car. She kept her speed up until she was a safe distance before crossing into the other lane. "Have a heart, Mr. Saotome. This can't be easy for her."
"So true," agreed Elder Kho Lon as she saw Ranma nod in agreement. "You could be more tactful Mr. Saotome." She shook her head. "Now back on topic. Usually, normally the government trusts parents to attend the meeting on their own," as she showed her annoyance to Genma. "We simply can't trust you, Mr. Saotome. Hence why Miss Wèi and I are involved."
"How dare you," yelled Genma as he showed his rage. "I totally would not run away," as he saw Elder Kho Lon sigh.
"I don't buy that," admonished Elder Kho Lon. "You've not been trustworthy, Mr. Saotome," as she sighed once more. "That's why I have been asked to escort you to the Japanese Government employee overseeing your situation."
"Don't worry I'll get us there on time," added Miss Wèi as she crossed a bridge on the highway she was driving at. "You'll be on your flight in plenty of time."
"That's good," gushed Ranma as she took a deep breath. She wiped the last of her tears from earlier away and gave half a smile. She felt her stomach lightly rumble and she looked embarrassed. "Well, we have something to eat soon?"
"On the plane, yes," replied Elder Kho Lon as she saw Ranma's mood brighten. She gave Genma a glare. "You should know Mr. Saotome," as she saw him look at her in annoyance. "The Japanese government will bill you for all of this," as she saw his eyes grow wide. "The government and I should not have to go through all these steps to babysit an adult."
(This situation.) Genma thought. He looked away from Elder Kho Lon's glare and looked out the window. (How dare they. It's my choice to meet the government or not.) He took a deep breath. (It is not their place to interfere with my life or my son's life…)
Early the next morning, Genma, Ranma, and Elder Kho Lon each sat on a chair. They were in an office inside a government building in Nerima Ward, Tokyo, Japan. A few minutes passed by in silence when the door swung open. Genma saw Mrs. Emica Ueno walking out.
Mrs. Ueno brown hair was tied to a ponytail. Her brown eyes glimmered at her clients. She wore a black dress that fell to her feet, socks, and high heels.
"Mr. Saotome and Ranma Saotome," exhaled Mrs. Ueno. She waved them into her office. "I'll see you two now," as both walked into her office. She had had a computer on a desk. Mrs. Ueno stood in front of her chair before her computer and Genma and Ranma sat in chairs in front of her desk. "A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Saotome." She gave a smile. "And you, Ranma."
"Hello," chirped Ranma as she shook Mrs. Ueno's hand. Genma shook her hand reluctantly. Mrs. Ueno sat down and cleared her throat.
"Good morning," sighed Genma as he took a deep breath. "Now that the pleasantries are over with," as he showed his anger. "How dare the government interfere with my life and my parenting style." He stood up. "I have rights…"
"Now Mr. Saotome," admonished Mrs. Ueno as she glared at him, and he sputtered his speech. "Good. Please sit down," as Genma sat down. She looked up and her annoyance at Genma's outburst showed. "Yes, Mr. Saotome. You have rights," as she saw he looked confused for a moment. His anger dissipated. "So too does your child, and the people of Japan."
"Elder Kho Lon," began Ranma as she took a deep breath. "Said we'd be talking about my education," as she saw Mrs. Ueno give her half a smile. "Is that what this is all about?"
"Yes," replied Mrs. Ueno. "The only reason we even had to have Elder Kho Lon escort your father and you," as she shook her head. "Is because he would have run away," as she looked at her computer for a second. "Now we got two options here," as she looked at Genma and then Ranma once more. "The first is you can be homeschooled as a boy if you wish."
Mrs. Ueno folded her arms on her lap, and she took a breath. She looked at her computer once more and looked at a screen for a moment. She looked back up at Genma and Ranma.
"The other option is for you, Ranma," added Mrs. Ueno. "To attend your compulsory education as a girl," as she saw Genma once more begin to work himself up…
Genma took a deep breath. Her face turning red once more. He waved his right hand down and opened his mouth. He failed to see Ranma and Mrs. Ueno shake their heads.
"I'll just homeschool the boy," exhaled Genma as he began to stand up.
"Sit back down, Mr. Saotome," ordered Mrs. Ueno as Genma sat back down. "That's all well and good that you let me know what you want as Ranma's father," as she took a very deep breath. She looked at Ranma and gave her half a smile. "What about you, Ranma? What do you want with regards to your education?"
"I…" Ranma stuttered as she opened her mouth. She took a deep breath and closed her mouth for a second.
(What do I want?) Ranma thought. She looked at Mrs. Ueno. Next, she looked at her father and then she looked down at her body. (I'm not comfortable being a girl.) She touched her heart with her right hand and felt it beating. (Yet, I love going to school.) She closed her black eyes for a second. (What do I want more?) She opened her eyes and gave her father a sad look.
(I can't say it will be easy being a girl.) Ranma thought. She then looked at Mrs. Ueno. She took another breath. (Yet I…I want to go to school.) She moved right hand away from her heart. She gave her father half a smile. (I just want to be a normal child growing up. Even if it is as a girl.) She looked back at Mrs. Ueno. (I doubt Pop will be happy, but this is my life…)
"I want to go to compulsory education as a girl," replied Ranma. "I like going to school too much." She took a deep breath. "I like to learn, make friends, and play together with the other kids." She paused for a moment. "I do not want to be homeschooled…"
"I won't allow it…" Genma roared as he once more startled his daughter. This time she just gave him a glare and faced Mrs. Ueno once more.
"Mr. Saotome," admonished Mrs. Ueno as she broke Genma away from his rage. "That is not your call to make," as she looked at Ranma. She softened her voice. "You'll need a girl's name, sweetie," as she saw Ranma begin to think. "I would pick a name you can live with…"
"Hmm. I like the name Kiko. So, I'll take the name Kiko Saotome," exhaled Kiko as she lightly giggled.
"Kiko Saotome," sang Mrs. Ueno as she looked at her computer. She began to type onto the machine. She looked at Kiko and gave her a nod. Kiko gave her a cute smile back…
Kiko blushed deep red as she sat on her chair. She once more touched her heart with her right hand, and she remained unaware that her father once more was working himself up.
"I will not agree with this anymore," yelled Genma as he grew beat red. He stood up and his chair fell to the ground. "Now…"
"Mr. Saotome. Mr. Saotome," repeated Mrs. Uneo in a serious voice. She broke Genma away from his reverie. "Do I have your attention now?" She saw him confirm that he did. "Now this will be the last time the government says this." She shook her right hand in anger at him. "It is not your place. Another outburst and I'll have you arrested, and your strength sealed."
"Pop," soothed Kiko as she grew red from embarrassment. "Just stop. You are going too far this time."
"All I want…" Genma sighed as he set the chair back up and sat down. "Is to train my son in martial arts…"
"As I implied," lectured Mrs. Uneo. "Your job as Kiko's parent is to raise her, take care of her, and help her grow up to be an adult," as Genma grew beat red. He paid attention to her words. "A part of that is her education." She relaxed her right arm. "Japanese Law is very clear that if a child wants to go to compulsory education their parents are compelled to send them."
Mrs. Ueno sighed, grabbed her bottle of water, and took a few sips of water. She took a deep breath and shook her head.
"Laws regarding Jusenkyo are just as binding," continued Mrs. Ueno. "My job is to inform you two of your options and go down the best route for the child," as she faced Kiko. She gave her a slight smile. She faced Genma once more. "Once Kiko decided she wanted to attend compulsory education our hands became tied, Mr. Saotome." She paused.
Mrs. Ueno cleared her throat, took a deep breath, and took another sip of water. She gave Genma a glare and half a nod at Kiko.
"Do I have your attention now?" Mrs. Ueno inquired as she saw Genma nod. "Good. Japan does not have a robust homeschooling program," as she saw Genma's eyes grow wide in surprise. "That is why the government doesn't really allow it unless circumstances allow it to be so," as she paused. She looked at Kiko. "And you still wish to attend compulsory education?"
"I do," affirmed Kiko without any hesitation. "I thought about it, and I just can't bring myself to be homeschooled."
"Kiko has the legal right to decide if she wants to attend compulsory education," exhaled Mrs. Ueno. She gave Genma a serious look. "Education and Jusenkyo Laws are clear on this," as she put her hands on her lap. "Do you understand, Mr. Saotome?"
"Yes," affirmed Genma as he twiddled his thumbs. He took a deep breath. "Why though is this even necessary?"
"You don't know, daddy?" Kiko asked as she saw her father shake his head. "I guess we'll both learn," as she faced Mrs. Ueno.
"Very well…" Mrs. Ueno exclaimed. She took another sip of water, took a deep breath, and took another look at Genma and his daughter Kiko. "It seems I'll be teaching a little bit of history regarding, Japan, Jusenkyo, and Education…"
Kiko took a deep breath as she began to listen to Mrs. Uneo's upcoming lecture. Genma sat near her, and he twitched in annoyance with the only thing keeping him in check was his fear of losing his strength and going to jail.
"Jusenkyo has been in recorded human history since a few hundred years before the Common Era began," explained Mrs. Ueno. "There were no rules regarding Jusenkyo in Japan until 1848," as Kiko and Genma's eyes grew wide.
"I'm guessing something bad happened?" Kiko inquired as she saw Mrs. Ueno give her a slight smile.
"Correct," praised Mrs. Ueno with a slight sigh. "In April of 1848 a male was cursed at Nyannīchuan," as she took a deep breath. "He got splashed with cold water in a busy market," as she shook her head. "Another woman got upset at the lack of appropriate attire by the new woman and a scuffle broke out," as she paused.
"That does not sound like it turned out well," mused Genma as his face remained red from his earlier yelling.
"Long story short," explained Mrs. Ueno. "The woman's husband accidently stabbed his wife when he tried to kill the victim of Nyannīchuan in his rage," as Genma and Ranma's mouths hung open. "Overcome with anger he stabbed the other female too and both women died within minutes from their wounds," as she paused. "He was later executed for murder."
"I am beginning to understand," sighed Genma.
"The public was beyond angry," finished Mrs. Ueno. "They demanded the government do something," as she looked at Genma. "In a short time, new laws regarding Jusenkyo were crafted in Japan," as she looked at Kiko. "One of them which is still a law today requires all those cursed by Jusenkyo to live their lives in their cursed form in any public setting."
"I understand now," exhaled Kiko with wonder. She touched her ruby necklace. "I take it someone learned to seal the curse's trigger through hot water by the necklaces?"
"Indeed, but not in reverse," replied Mrs. Ueno. She looked at Genma and gave him a serious look. "You are lucky neither of you fell into a spring that turns you into an animal such as a panda," as Genma grew pale. "The laws regarding those are not as kind as the ones where someone changes their gender." She paused. "Next we can talk about Compulsory Education…"
Mrs. Ueno took a deep breath. She took another sip of water. She looked at her computer for a moment and then back at Genma and Kiko.
"Twenty-four years later in 1872 when Compulsory Education became law," explained Mrs. Ueno. "The existing Jusenkyo laws and new education laws mingled depending on an individual's circumstances," as she saw Kiko nod.
"Such as mine," exhaled Kiko as she looked astonished.
"Exactly," agreed Mrs. Ueno. "Now, Kiko," as she looked at the young girl. "You are required to attend school until you graduate junior high school," as she took a breath. "When you turn eighteen-years-old you are legally allowed to make yourself fully female through a magic pill," as Kiko and Genma grew wide eyed. "Only you can decide to do that."
"Now listen," Genma began as he saw Mrs. Ueno begin to glare at him. "Oh right. Sorry," as Kiko shook her head in shame.
"Why not before hand?" Kiko asked as both adults looked at her for different reasons.
(Why can't the boy just shut his mouth?) Genma thought as he shifted in his seat. (I swear he is doing this on purpose…)
"Kiko," soothed Mrs. Ueno. "Do you know what you want when you are older," as she saw the young girl shake her head. "That is why you have to wait till you are older before you decide on something so life changing. Do you understand?"
"I think I do," replied Kiko.
(Good.) Genma thought. (That gives me time to come up with an alternate plan.) He took a deep breath. (Since direct threats and anger seem to have failed.) He controlled himself as best as he could. (At least all is not lost.)
"Lastly when you become an adult at the age of twenty," finished Mrs. Ueno with a slight worry on her face. "You may partake in a magic ritual that removes your Jusenkyo curse that made you a girl in the first place."
"Huh," murmured Kiko as she looked up in surprise. "Elder Kho Lon did not mention that one to us."
"If there is such a ritual," sighed Genma as he kept his rage in check. "Why all of this legal conversation?" He raised his fist. "You could just…"
"It's too dangerous for a child," snapped Mrs. Ueno as Genma and Kiko looked up in surprise, shock, and bewilderment. "The ritual can remove the curse yes," as she looked at them. Then she looked away and steeled herself before facing them. "In 1935 the ritual was performed on a girl who was cursed to turn into a boy." She wiped away a tear. "It worked, but then she…"
Mrs. Ueno took a deep breath, wiped away a tear, and took another sip of water. She blew her nose and looked apologetic.
"Sorry. I get worked up every time I talk about or hear this story," explained Mrs. Ueno as she saw Genma and Kiko nod. "They removed the twelve-year-old girl's curse, yes," as she paused. "When the ritual was over the little girl's heart stopped and she died," as Genma's eyes grew wide. "The doctors determined her body was much too young to handle the ritual."
"I don't want to die," sniffled Kiko as she trembled. "So that is why I have to wait till I am an adult."
"Aye," explained Mrs. Uneo as she wiped away a few tears. "Now let's get our meeting back on topic," as she paused for a moment. "I need a few minutes to set things up on your file, Kiko," as she saw the young girl nod in understand. "Just bear with me for a few minutes as I take care of your legal files."
"Okay," murmured Kiko.
(So, there is still hope that when this is all said and done.) Genma thought. (I just have to wait till the boy turns twenty and this will all be a distant memory…)
(No doubt, Pops is planning something.) Kiko thought. (I know him. He doesn't give up. I just have to be ready for whatever it is.) She placed her arms in her laps. (I just hope it doesn't get worse for me…)
Mrs. Ueno looked at her computer once more. She began to type in silence as she set things in Kiko's file. She looked up at Kiko and saw the little girl was slightly bored.
"Oh, I am sorry, Kiko," laughed Mrs. Ueno. "This must be pretty dry and boring," as she saw the girl nod. "I know you'd rather be doing anything else."
"It's okay," gushed Kiko. "I know when I have to buckle down and be serious," as she twiddled her hands. "I am just a little bit bored."
"I bet," exhaled Mrs. Ueno. "Now you understand that you'll have to be dressed appropriately as a girl in any public setting, okay?" She saw Kiko nod. "Good. "Now Mr. Saotome," as Genma looked up at her "I see in your file you and your ex-wife Nodoka Hano split up years ago?"
"That's correct," partially lied Genma. "Nodoka and I divorced when our child was six years old," as he said it with a straight face.
(They must not know.) Genma thought. (That the deal I made with Nodoka is she stays away from Ranma, and I make him a man amongst man or we both…) He took a deep breath as he held out a partially fake smile. (Kill ourselves. The government must not know about Nodoka's Seppuku Pledge she made me sign and accepted from Ranma's painted fingerprints…)
"I see that," affirmed Mrs. Ueno with a frown. "I also see no listed address from your ex-wife, no known location," as she studied Genma's face. "And no one has seen Miss Hano in public in years," as she looked at the computer again. She looked up at Genma once more. "You aren't hiding something from the government, are you?"
"Of course not," muttered Genma with a straight face. "I have no idea where Nodoka is anymore, Mrs. Ueno."
"Mhmm," sighed Mrs. Ueno as she shook her head.
"What's going on? Kiko asked as she looked confused. "I am so lost," as she looked between the adults.
"You sound like you don't believe me," accused Genma as he gulped. "I can assure you that I am not lying…"
"Maybe you are telling the truth," Mrs. Ueno began. "Or maybe you are not," as she gave Genma a glare. "Your credibility, Mr. Saotome is stretched thin as it is," as she paused. "With how much you resisted in this meeting in the first place." She took a sip of water. "That is why I am assigning a woman to be Kiko's Social Care Worker for a period of one year."
"You can't," stuttered Genma as he grew beat red.
"I can and I will," assured Mrs. Ueno as she looked up at Genma. "For starters you seem to me to be the type of man who is sexist," as Genma grew red in the face. "You don't live with a woman anymore who can care for Kiko," as she paused. "You wouldn't know the first thing about how to care for girl," as she faced the young girl. "Kiko?"
"Yes?" Kiko asked as she looked at Mrs. Ueno.
"The woman I am assigning to be your Social Care Worker's name is Maho Iha," explained Mrs. Ueno. "Monday through Friday she'll help you get ready for school, going to school," as she paused. "She'll be on standby to take you to the doctors for example if you get sick, and she'll be around till the evening to help you out as you need it."
"So, she'll sort of be like a mother?" Kiko asked.
"That's the idea," exclaimed Mrs. Ueno. "I suspect your father may not be so understanding with any female issues that you may have," as Genma grew pale. "I think she'll be a tremendous help to you, Kiko," as she typed onto her computer. She picked up her smartphone and gave her clients a smile. "I am calling her now…I need quiet," as she dialed a number…
Kiko, Genma, and Mrs. Ueno sat in her office and a few minutes later they heard the door open. Kiko saw a woman with black hair that fell to her waist. Her black eyes showed her warmth. She wore a black dress that fell to her knees. She wore black socks and high heels on her feet. She walked into the room and closed the door. She walked closer to Kiko and Genma.
"Thanks, Miss Iha," began Mrs. Ueno. "For coming over on such short notice," as she stood up and walked around her desk. "Genma, Kiko," as they looked at her. "I'd like you to meet Maho Iha," as she gave Kiko half a nod.
"Nice to meet you, Kiko," chirped Miss Iha. "I'll be your Social Care Worker," as she shook Kiko's hand. She gave a nod to Genma. "We'll be working together for Kiko's sake, Mr. Saotome," as he reluctantly shook her hand next.
"Hello," Genma said as he shook her hand. "Nice to meet you."
"I am so excited," gushed Kiko as she grew slightly hyper. "What comes next?" She remained unaware that her enthusiasm made her father scowl for a moment. Miss Iha bent down closer to Kiko's face and gave her a bright smile.
"You and I will go shopping, Kiko," replied Miss Iha. "No doubt you'll need new clothes, toys, and other things appropriate for a young girl," as Genma grew wide eyed.
"That I…" Genma stuttered as both adult women glanced in his direction. "I…" He tried to cling onto any authority.
"Are you saying you'll take Kiko shopping, Mr. Saotome?" Miss Iha asked as Genma grew nervous. "Thought so," as she held out her hand. "Part of my job will be to take care of Kiko and her needs, and she currently requires new belongings. So, we must go shopping."
"Ugh, right," murmured Genma. "I think this is a better idea if you take care of the shopping," as each of the three females rolled their eyes. "Where will we meet when everything is taken care of?"
"At your home," exhaled Mrs. Ueno. "We have your address on file," as Genma gave a slight nod. "Miss Iha will call when she and Kiko are done shopping," as she saw Miss Iha help Kiko stand up. "Before-hand you and I have more to talk about."
"Ready, Kiko?" Miss Iha asked.
"Aye," giggled Kiko as gave a smile to Miss Iha. She held her hand and both females left the room together.
"Mr. Saotome," Mrs. Ueno began. "Next we need to discuss what to expect with a Social Care Worker," as he looked at her "And your upcoming debt you owe to the government."
"Ugh right," began Genma as he inwardly sighed. "So, what did you want to talk about?"
(Why me?) Genma thought. (I just have to play it smart, strategically, and wait out my time.) He took a deep breath. (I'll just wait out the long game at this point…)
Kiko sat in the passenger's seat of Miss Iha's black car. Miss Iha stopped at a red light and gave a slight smile to the little girl.
"So, Kiko," began Miss Iha. "What kind of clothing, bedding, toys, were you thinking of buying for yourself?"
"Hmm," pondered Kiko. "What should I…" She began to think for a moment as Miss Iha saw the light turn green.
(On one hand I could be nice to Pops.) Kiko thought. She put her right hand near her cheek. She saw the mall a few blocks away. (On the other hand.) She frowned as she took a deep breath. (He has been a jerk since Jusenkyo.)
"Would it be wrong for me to want to get anything girly," began Kiko as she saw Miss Iha begin to park. "Just to spite my father," as she saw her caretaker look at her. "He really upset my feelings yesterday…And he's not done much to redeem himself since…"
"Listen, child," exhaled Miss Iha. She gave Kiko a grin. "This trip is all about you," as Kiko grew wide eyed. "You are the kid, and he is the parent," as she gave a slight smile and frown all in one look. "My job is to ensure your needs and even many wants are fulfilled," as she saw Kiko's eyes grow misty eyed. "If you want to go full on girl. I'm on for it…"
"Then let's do that," giggled Kiko. She took a deep breath. "Perhaps it is a bit selfish of me, but then again I been dreaming of being taken care of for so long…"
"Sounds good to me," gushed Miss Iha as she unbuckled herself. "Wait till I tell you the best part, Kiko…"
Genma sat in his chair. He took a breath as Mrs. Ueno looked at her computer for a moment before she looked up at him.
"So, since there is just one adult living in your home," began Mrs. Ueno. "Is it safe to say you are the only adult making income in your home?"
"That's right," affirmed Genma. "I work part time just enough to buy the essentials and pay the bills."
"I see," murmured Mrs. Ueno as she gave Genma half a smile. "Well, I must inform you that you'll be expected to either go full time at your job or find a full-time job," as she saw Genma grimace. "Even before this incident it is questionable judgement why you keep your home sparsely taken care of when you have a child."
"Ranma and I spent a lot of time on the road," explained Genma as he shook his right fist. He took a deep breath. "Creature comforts would just make the boy soft…"
"It seems to me, Mr. Saotome," began Mrs. Ueno. "That you spend more time considering your own needs, comforts, and wants," as she saw Genma's eyes grow wide. "And not what your child needs and wants…As I said earlier your job as a parent is to take care of your child. Understood?" She stared into Genma's eyes and studied his face for a moment.
"I do," gulped Genma. He gave a nod of affirmation. (Just play along, Saotome.) Genma thought. (It's the long game I'll need to play.) "I'll ask my boss for full-time work."
"Great," praised Mrs. Ueno. "Next order of business is your debt to the government and the price of us aiding your family."
"What do I owe?" Genma asked as he gulped in fear.
"On my recommendation," began Mrs. Ueno. "Since you are the only provider for your family your debt to the government will be cut in half to this amount," as she showed Genma on a piece of paper. "Any questions?"
"Isn't that still pricey?" Genma inquired as he grew beet red from the shock of the amount. "It hardly seems fair."
"Oh, but it is," explained Mrs. Ueno. "That money you owe will be calculated in monthly installments and will be budgeted to not interfere with your bills, food, and other needs," as she began to type once more. "Next we need to discuss the shopping trip Kiko is doing with Miss Iha," as she looked up at Genma again. "That too is money you'll owe the government."
"I see," muttered Genma as he looked thoughtful. "Do I get a discount on those purchases as well because I am the sole provider?"
"You do," replied Mrs. Ueno. "We'll bill you for half of all purchases made by Kiko and Miss Iha." She paused. "For as long as you and your daughter remain in the Social Care Worker program," as she took a breath.
"That doesn't sound too bad," murmured Genma as he took a breath. "What happens when the year is up?"
"The government will look at the situation," explained Mrs. Ueno with a serious look. "If we determine that you and your daughter meet our expectations," as she took a breath. "Then in a year from now we'll end the enrollment if not…It'll continue for another year…"
"I see," exhaled Genma as he saw Miss Iha type some more.
(This situation sucks.) Genma thought. (Darn the government.) He shook his head and tried to stay calm. (Just stay calm Saotome. In a few years things will get better…)
"Next we'll talk about what Miss Iha will do for Kiko and you, Mr. Saotome," began Miss Ueno as she took a deep breath. "As said before her primary role is to fulfill a mother role for Kiko." She paused. "In addition, she'll…"
Kiko sat on a chair in a restaurant. She ate the meal that she ordered. She sat nearby Miss Iha who was also eating.
"I been thinking about it," began Kiko as she looked at Miss Iha. "I don't regret buying female clothes, bedding, and all of the things that I need," as her black eyes filled with tears. "I do want to say I had fun, but I am changing my answer."
"Oh?" Miss Iha asked with wonder. "In what way, Kiko?"
"Earlier in the car I was angry at Pops," explained Kiko as she wiped away a tear. She trembled in sadness. "I no longer want to own feminine belongings to spite him," as she lightly blushed. "I dislike being angry," as she tried to smile. "I want everything we bought so I can fit in at school, in public, and at home. She took a breath. "I made the choice to be a girl to..."
"That's big of you to say, Kiko," praised Miss Iha as she gave her a hug. "It's easy to be angry, but not so easy to break it," as she saw the little girl sniffle. "I am proud you believe that, and I support your choice to go to school as a girl."
"Thanks," giggled Kiko as she returned to eating. "I really just like going to school," as she took a breath. "Making friends, playing, and learning is fun too," as she shrugged her shoulders. "Of course I like martial arts. I am so torn, but I feel like I made the best choice for myself, Miss Iha."
"Then just focus on that," explained Miss Iha as she finished her meal. "In the meantime, Kiko," as she stood up. "I'll support you as much as I can."
"Thank you," gushed Kiko. She finished eating and stood up as well…
Hours later, Genma stood outside his home. He looked at the truck and saw several men and women carrying Kiko's new belongings into his house. His home had a black roof and was painted white. He saw a black car pull over several moments later.
He saw Kiko and Miss Iha step out of Miss Iha's car. Kiko wore a pink dress that fell to her knees. She wore pink socks, and pink shoes. Her black hair fell to her back.
"I see the truck has arrived," observed Miss Iha as she walked over to Genma. "What are your plans now, Mr. Saotome; now that this step is done with?"
"I am going to visit an Old Friend, Soun Tendo and his daughters," exclaimed Genma as he took a breath. He gave a false smile to Kiko. "I am sure Kiko would be delighted to see Akane, Nabiki, and Kasumi today."
"Of course," gushed Kiko with a huge grin. "I wonder what Akane will say when she sees me now…"
"I have to prepare my staff for the weekends, Mr. Saotome," exhaled Miss Iha. "Will you be fine without my services for a few hours?"
"Sure," grumbled Genma as he gave her half a frown.
"Just to be sure," began Miss Iha. "Will someone watch Kiko should you choose to spend time with your friend?" She saw him fidget for a second. "Mr. Saotome?"
"Oh yes, of course," replied Genma. "Kasumi is seventeen years old," as he saw Miss Iha nod. "She can watch Kiko if I have a few drinks with Soun."
"Very well," sighed Miss Iha. "Just to be sure…Give me the Tendo number so I can talk to Kasumi for a few minutes…" She saw Genma glare at her as he pulled out his smartphone…
Fourteen-year-old Nabiki Tendo sat at her desk in her room. Her brown hair hung in a ponytail to her shoulders. Her brown eyes grew misty eyed as she continued her work. She wore an orange tank top and skirt that fell to her knees.
On her computer's right screen Nabiki had a calculator up. On the left screen she stared at her family's budget expenses. She continued to enter numbers as she calculated the final numbers. She heard her door open. She saw her older sister, Kasumi walking into her room.
Seventeen-year-old Kasumi sat next to her younger sister. Her black hair fell to her back. Her black eyes showed her warmth despite the situation their family was in. She wore a blue dress that fell to her feet.
"I see you just finished your calculations, little sis," muttered Kasumi. She took a deep breath. "Good timing I suppose. I just got off the phone with a woman named Miss Iha."
"What about?" Nabiki asked as she saw her older sister's black eyes twinkling. "Oh, can't say to me? I see…"
"You'll learn soon enough," explained Kasumi. "I promised to keep it a surprise," as she saw Nabiki shake her head. "Of course, I can say is it will bring more drama for us…"
"Figures," snorted Nabiki with slight wonder. "As if we need more challenges in our lives already."
"So, did you confirm it?" Kasumi asked as she saw Nabiki nod in affirmation. "I see. I had hoped my calculations were not right."
"They were exactly right," sighed Nabiki as she shook her head. "Our family is spending more money every month then we are taking in," as she pointed to the budget on her computer screen to her older sister. "My calculations confirm that you were right, Kasumi."
"Our family savings that our mom left the family when she died is dwindling," cried Kasumi as she hugged Nabiki. "So, it's true then…"
"Aye," sniffled Nabiki. "Our savings will be fully gone in about twelve years when Akane will be twenty-three," as she saved her file. "Without any more steady income going in we keep spending each month far beyond anything we bring in."
"Even with my part time job?" Kasumi asked as she saw Nabiki shake her head. "Oh, I see. It still is not enough?"
"No," confirmed Nabiki. "It may seem like a long time from now," as she saw Kasumi nod in agreement. "That's assuming nothing accelerates to drain our family savings even faster," as she shook her head. "As it is. Akane will just be finishing her first four years of college."
"Here's hoping we can think of something and soon," gasped Kasumi.
"Indeed," agreed Nabiki. "If daddy would get a job," as she shook her right fist. "A lot of our problems would ease up," as she saw Kasumi nod in agreement. "It doesn't help that in addition father and Mr. Saotome drain a lot of money each month drinking Sake at the club…"
"Speaking of Mr. Saotome," soothed Kasumi. "He will be here soon…"
"Really," murmured Nabiki as her eyes grew wide with surprise. "Excuse me," as she got a change of clothes. "I should get ready, and you should tell Akane," as she grabbed clean clothes and left the room.
"Well," sighed Kasumi as she held her right hand up. "You'll find out what happened soon enough," to an empty room. She shook her head and left Nabiki's bedroom…
Forty-five minutes later Genma sat next to his Old Friend, Soun Tendo. Soun's black hair hung to his shoulders. His black eyes showed his annoyance at Kiko. He wore a brown shirt, and pants. He shook his head as he heard Kiko explain her reason. Nearby on a chair sat his eldest daughter Kasumi.
Kasumi wore a blue blouse and skirt that fell to her knees. Next to her sat Nabiki who wore a green dress that fell to her feet. Nearby sat eleven-year-old Akane. Akane's black hair was tied to a ponytail. Her black eyes stared at Kiko. She wore a yellow Gi.
"…I know it may not be easy for some of you to accept," began Kiko as she lightly blinked. "I chose to go to school as a girl and took the name Kiko."
"Now son," began Soun as he looked around. "Surely you'd consider the ramifications on deciding on this, eh?"
"It doesn't bother me," exhaled Nabiki. She saw Kasumi nod in agreement. "It is Kiko's life and if that is her decision to continue compulsory education as a girl then so be it," as she gave a supportive nod to Kiko.
"I agree," hummed Kasumi. "We've known Kiko for many years and I love her like a little sister," as she stood up and hugged Kiko. "If school makes you happy then go for it, girl."
"Thanks," giggled Kiko as she failed to see Akane's eyes show her anger, frustration, and lack of understanding.
"You are such a pervert, Ranma," yelled Akane as she stood up.
"All I want is to go to school like everyone else," sniffled Kiko. "And to be a normal child like everyone else too," as she stood her ground. "That's all I want, Akane."
"I don't buy that," accused Akane as she shook her right fist. "You could just be homeschooled," as she showed her anger. "I bet you just want to check out your girl body," as she left the room with heavy angry footsteps.
"Grand," Genma called out as he missed everyone dropping sweat from his willful obliviousness. "The kids are getting along as ever," as he bent closer to Soun's ears. "Let's drink, Old Friend. We can talk there."
"Sounds good," whispered Soun to Genma. He raised his voice to normal. "Kasumi can you watch over everyone while Genma and I go out to drink?"
"Of course, father," sang Kasumi as she saw Genma, and her father get their shoes on. "I will take good care of everything." She saw the pair leave. She gave a slight smile to Kiko and Nabiki. She walked over to the kitchen…
An hour and a half later Kasumi put a tea kettle full of water on the stove. She turned it on. She saw Kiko in the living room playing with her toys by herself. She heard footsteps and saw Nabiki walk into the kitchen a moment later. She gave Kasumi a frown as she also saw Kiko playing alone.
"It's been like this since those two left the house," exhaled Nabiki as she shook her head in frustration. "Akane is still in the dojo working out," as she paused. "Or more aptly to say she is just acting out on her anger."
"It's not like Kiko has done anything," hummed Kasumi with a slight smile. "It is her choice to go to compulsory education."
"So true," agreed Nabiki as she sighed. "Tell that to Akane," as she saw Kasumi pour some tea for them. Kasumi sat down next to her younger sister, and they drank their tea. "I think perhaps you should take Kiko out to the park near her home, Kasumi."
"You don't really think it'll reach that point do, Nabiki?" Kasumi asked as she saw her little sister shake her head.
"A good chance yes," affirmed Nabiki. "Akane has always been quick to anger," as saw Kasumi's eyes grow wide. "And both her and Kiko are stubborn as hell." She paused for a moment. She saw Kiko continue to play with her toys in the living room. "Akane will eventually say something truly offensive and Kiko won't back down forever."
"Good point," exhaled Kasumi as she put her hands to her face. "Both are good friends, and this situation should not end their friendship."
"So true," agreed Nabiki as she shook her head. "The new school year is starting soon," as she gave a slight smile. "I would prefer neither girl goes to school on the first day with some bruises on their bodies if I can help it."
"I agree," exclaimed Kasumi. "I'll go and see the neighbor and have her watch you and Akane," as she saw Nabiki shake her head. "I'll then watch little Kiko at the park near her home till Mr. Saotome is ready to care for his daughter tonight."
"Thanks, big sis," Nabiki said as she stood up and hugged Kasumi. "This is the right call until Akane settles down more, and she can think clearly," as she saw Kasumi nod and leave the kitchen. "I'll take care of the cups, big sis." She saw Kasumi smile and Nabiki began to clean the two cups…
Sometime later, Kiko sat on a bench at a park in the Nerima Ward. She took a deep breath and sighed as she wiped away a few tears. She heard footsteps and saw a girl walking over to her spot. She had black hair that fell on her back, and she had black eyes. She wore a blue dress that fell to her knees. She wore socks and sneakers.
"You seem down," the black-haired girl said softly to Kiko. "If you want to talk or hangout I'll be willing to listen, girl."
"Oh hello, Narumi Sada," softly said Kiko as she looked up at Narumi. She wiped away a tear from her eyes. "It's good to see you again."
"How do you know my name?" Narumi asked with wide eyes. She took a breath and saw Kiko adjust her right hand to her side. Kiko gave her a confident smile. "No way. So, the new girl is you?"
"Aye my new name is Kiko Saotome," sniffled Kiko as she saw Narumi sit next to her on the bench.
"Is that why you are upset, Kiko?" Narumi inquired as she saw Kiko shake her head. "I see. Why are you upset, Kiko?"
"It's Akane," mumbled Kiko as she gave half a frown. "I chose to go to compulsory education as a girl myself because I like school, learning, and being with friends, but she…"
"Let me guess she said something along the lines of you being a pervert?" Narumi asked as she saw Kiko nod. "She has such an unhealthy attitude about girls and boys," as she hugged Kiko. "She'll get over it one day, but I know it must hurt that she's acting like this…"
"Indeed," giggled Kiko as she gave Narumi half a smile. "Seeing you again brings back happy and sad memories," as she wiped away a tear. "I'm sorry. I still wanted to be friends; but Pops, he had other ideas."
"It's not your fault, Kiko," hushed Narumi. "We both know how strong your father is and how opinionated he can be," as she gave a smile to Kiko.
"It's partially my fault," sniffled Kiko with tears falling down her cheeks. "I should have stood my ground like I did earlier today," as she hugged Narumi. "So, if you want. I'd like to go back to being friends with you Narumi." She took a deep breath. "Do you forgive me?"
"Of course, silly girl," gushed Narumi. "I can't say I wasn't hurt, but I was never mad at you; just sad," as she wiped away a tear from her cheek. "I forgive you, Kiko," as she hugged her friend again. "As far as I've been concerned we've always been friends even after that day…"
"Thanks," cried Kiko as she gave a smile. She looked thoughtful and took a breath. "I now know he did what he did," as she saw Narumi look surprised. "It had nothing to do with you being a girl," as she paused. "Since I was still friends with Akane," as she saw her friend's eyes grow wide. "My guess is he was upset I was friends with someone who wasn't a martial artist."
"That makes sense," soothed Narumi as she stood up. She gave a smile. "Now let's stop feeling sorry for ourselves and go play."
"Sounds good," agreed Kiko as she took her friend's right hand. She stood up and the two girls ran off towards the swing set…
Kasumi watched Kiko and Narumi play together on the slides near the swing set. She smiled as she saw both girls giggle. She took a breath when she saw a black-haired woman and black eyes walking over. She wore a sapphire dress that fell to her knees. She wore blue socks and shoes.
"Afternoon, Kasumi," the black-haired woman began. "It's good to see again. How are you doing?"
"Hello, Harue Sada," gushed Kasumi with a huge smile. "I am doing okay. It's always a pleasure to see you," as she gave a bow. "How are you?"
"I am well," Harue replied. "Who is the girl playing with my daughter, Kasumi," as she saw Kasumi's twinkle. "I never seen her before."
"Her name is Kiko," explained Kasumi. "Kiko Saotome."
"I see," giggled Harue with a slight smirk. "So, Genma took his child to Jusenkyo, and he got a daughter out of the situation," as she saw Kasumi nod. "Let me guess little Kiko decided to go to school as a girl?"
"Aye," affirmed Kasumi as she shook her head. "While Nabiki and I support her choice…Well the others including Akane do not," as she shook her head. "I am glad that Kiko stood up for herself." She paused for a moment. "She's the strongest eleven-year-old I know and yet she always did what she was told even when it broke up her friendship with Narumi."
"Seems to me that they changed that," gushed Harue. "I see Kiko and Narumi are friends again," as she smiled as she saw both girls slide down a slide. "I am glad to see it." She sat down on a bench and Kasumi sat down next to her. "I am honestly surprised that Genma took Kiko to Jusenkyo considering the rules in place…"
"No doubt he didn't think about the risks," sighed Kasumi as she shook her head. "Still, maybe this is the best thing for Kiko."
"Perhaps so," agreed Harue as she smiled as she saw the two little girls play a game of tag together. "I am glad they are friends once more," as she gave Kasumi a happy smile. "They were always good friends until Genma intervened."
"So true," agreed Kasumi with a slight smile. "No doubt Kiko is in for a rough transition period with all the rules she'll have to follow."
"Agreed," added Harue. "Still, she'll adjust. She did choose this after all," as she saw Kasumi nod in agreement. "How is…" She began to speak when both females heard some footsteps approach the bench they were sitting on…
Kasumi and Harue saw Miss Iha walking over to the bench they sat on. She gave a smile to Kasumi and Harue.
"Hello Mrs. Sada," began Miss Iha as she waved. "It's good to see again," as she bowed, and she faced Kasumi. "You must be Kasumi Tendo. It's a pleasure to meet you," as she shook both of their hands.
"Nice to meet you," soothed Kasumi with half a smile. "It's good to meet in person."
"Hello again Maho," gushed Harue with a slight smile. "So, I take it you are the Social Care Worker for Kiko?"
"Indeed. I am her Social Care Worker," affirmed Miss Iha. She sat down on the bench. "I wasn't too shocked when you called me, Kasumi," as she frowned. "I got the feeling someone would be unhappy, but I was hoping I was wrong."
"Me too," sighed Kasumi as she shook her head. "Still no doubt it is just a temporary phase," as she slightly smiled. "Akane is easy to anger, but she also is a loyal friend," as she took a breath. "Of course, she's quick to make an opinion and stubborn just as Kiko is."
"At least Kiko and Narumi can be good friends," exhaled Harue with a happy smile. "At least she can have someone to help her adjust."
"Indeed," agreed Miss Iha as she looked at her smartphone. "It'll be sometime before I need to make Kiko and Genma dinner," as she saw the other two nod. "In the meantime, why won't you two fill me in with Kiko," as she paused. "Even if it is something she needs help on. The more I know the better I can be a mother figure for her."
"Sure," agreed Kasumi as she gave a nod to Harue. "You can go first."
"Thanks, Kasumi," exhaled Harue. "For starters. I have known Kiko for several years now," as she took a breath. "She's…
Meanwhile, Genma sat next to his friend Soun in a local bar in the Nerima Ward. Both men sat on bar stools and downed Sake together.
"Oh, so that's your plan, hic," exhaled Soun with wide eyes. "The question is…Will it work in the end?"
"I hope so, Old Friend," exclaimed Genma as he shook his head. "Brute strength, anger, and psychology are not winning me anything here," as he took another drink. "The boy was so obedient until yesterday before he fell in Nyannīchuan otherwise known as the Spring of drowned Girl." His eyes grew wide, and he gave his friend a blinked look.
"Old Friend?" Soun asked as he looked confused. "What is it?"
"It all makes sense," sighed Genma as he took another drink of Sake. He took a breath. "I get it now. Hic."
"Get what?" Soun inquired. He also drank some Sake and looked at his friend with a questioning look. "I don't understand, hic."
"Nodoka was just as stubborn," replied Genma as he saw Soun nod in agreement. "No wonder that Ranma is just as stubborn when a girl," as he took another drink. "Darn the government, darn the people, and darn my stubborn ex-wife and child."
"Now, Old Friend," soothed Soun. "As long as our plan works then everything will work out, no?" He took another drink.
"It sure will," gasped Genma with wonder. He took another drink as well. "Hic. I just thought of a few new ideas, Old Friend. "What if I…" Genma leaned in and began to whisper his plan into Soun's ears…
A few hours later, Genma, Kiko, and Miss Iha finished eating dinner together. Genma stood up and gave a slight half smile that was more a frown.
"Go ahead and clean the dishes, girl," ordered Genma as he gave his daughter a stern look. He saw her nod. "Then you can go to your room and play quietly," as he took a slight breath. "Just make sure to wash up, brush your teeth, and all that." He gave a light hiccup. "I'm going to lay down. See you in the morning."
"Night dad," exhaled Kiko as she stood up. She watched him leave the room and saw Miss Iha stand up as well.
"That was a little rude," sighed Miss Iha as she shook her head. She saw Kiko begin to clear the table of their dishes.
"It's okay," exclaimed Kiko as she carried the dishes to the sink. She began to wash them. "Pops is just mad at me," as she continued to clean. "He'll be in a better mood tomorrow. I am sure of it."
"I just hope so, child," soothed Miss Iha. She shook her head and checked the black refrigerator for the food inside. She saw Kiko finish cleaning. She saw Kiko put the dishes in the drying rack. Next Kiko dried her hands. She saw a few tears fall from Kiko's cheeks. "Kiko?"
"I'm fine," cried Kiko as she faced Miss Iha. She shrugged her shoulders sadly. "I am just a little hurt by his uncaring tonight, but I hope he'll get over the anger over my choice soon."
"So do I, Kiko," muttered Miss Iha. "So do I," as she walked over. She hugged Kiko. "I shall see you in the morning Kiko for our meeting with the school," as she saw Kiko give her a slight nod. "Night."
"Good night," sniffled Kiko as she wiped her tears away. "See you in the morning," as she saw Miss Iha leave the room. She heard the front door open and close. She walked over, locked the door, picked up her toys in the living room, and quietly walked upstairs…
The following morning, Genma, Kiko, and Miss Iha sat at the table. They finished eating their breakfast. Genma stood up.
"Are we going to spar now, Pops?" Kiko asked as her eyes lit up in pure excitement. She saw her father give a slight smile.
"I don't have time," lied Genma. (If stopping all martial arts motivates the boy to do the right thing.) He took a breath. (Then so be it. I can always catch him back up. "I got a full workday ahead of me. (My other plan is to show him less affection. Saotome, you are brilliant man.) He walked over and gave Kiko a quick hug. "Now be a good girl for Miss Iha today."
"Yes dad," obeyed Kiko as she saw her father leave the kitchen. She picked up their dishes, walked over to the sink, and began to clean them.
"Hmm," muttered Miss Iha as she shook her head.
(I hope that is not a sign of what is to come.) Miss Iha thought. (That is twice now that he has rebuffed his daughter.) She saw Kiko clean the dishes. (No doubt in my mind if indeed it was what I think it was. Then things will get worse before they get better…)
"We'll need to leave soon, Kiko," began Miss Iha as she gave a supportive smile. "So, we can be on time for your meeting with the principal."
"Yes, Miss Iha," giggled Kiko as she turned around and gave a smile. Miss Iha returned the smile and saw Kiko return to her chores…
Kiko and Miss Iha sat in the waiting room in the Isa Elementary School in the Nerima Ward. Kiko sat as patiently as she could for their meeting with the principal. Kiko was wearing a blue blouse, skirt, socks, and sneakers.
"Have you thought about what you plan to say to the principal?" Miss Iha asked as she gave a smile to Kiko. "About what homeroom you want to be in?"
"A little," replied Kiko as she showed her nervousness. "A part of me is worried if I stay in the same homeroom as Akane will it make things worse?"
"I was wondering if you were concerned about that," exhaled Miss Iha as she gave a supportive smile. "You still got a little bit of time."
"Aye," agreed Kiko as she returned to fiddling her hands. "I am close to deciding on what I want to do, Miss Iha."
"That's good," soothed Miss Iha. "Afterwards were you up for playing with your friend Narumi at the park again?"
"I'd love that," giggled Kiko as her mood brightened.
(At least she has a friend.) Miss Iha thought. (If it is what I think Genma is doing.) She gave a supportive smile to the now slightly hyper girl. (Then there is nothing I or the government can do.) She looked at the time. (We can guide a parent to care for their child, but we can't force a parent to love their child.) She inwardly trembled. (We can't make them show affection…)
(I just hope that is not what is going on.) Miss Iha thought. She took a breath. (If it is.) She saw the office door begin to open. (Then Kiko is going to have a rough go of it…)
