The day had started out peacefully. No clouds in the sky, flowers blooming in the parks and along the paved streets. The air was clear, and to her surprise, there were absolutely no crimes being reported. She hadn't received a single alert from the DEO in almost three days, aside from scheduled training exercises with Supergirl, all of which had been canceled. Kara had been avoiding everyone who might pry into how she was really doing.
Alex would be lying if she said she didn't find the peace strange, especially considering the entire multiverse had been condensed into Earth-Prime just under two weeks ago. She had expected some kind of adjustment period for those who remembered what had transpired. What she didn't expect, however, was the growing distance between Kara and Lena.
Alex wasn't the type to pry, but when she finally ran into her sister for the first time since the Crisis, she could see the subtle changes in Kara's demeanor. Something was off. She knew she needed to step in before it was too late.
"—and that is why our state-of-the-art technology will change your lives forever."
Alex listened absentmindedly to the sounds from a nearby billboard as she crossed the busy intersection. As a scientist, she knew the technology being advertised was groundbreaking, but she also anticipated some backlash from those not quite ready to accept a more tech-savvy world.
When she walked into the DEO, she spotted Brainy approaching with a worried expression.
"Director Danvers, I require your attention on a more… sensitive Supergirl matter," Brainy said, not-so-gently tugging her over to the control station where he had been working. He glanced around to ensure no one was within earshot before speaking in a low voice.
"Brainy, if this is another one of your attempts to convince me to get Kara to join you for Star Trek night, I—"
"Supergirl is missing."
Brainy's interruption sent a shockwave through Alex, her confusion quickly turning to concern.
"Missing?" She asked incredulously
Alex immediately tried to calm herself. Supergirl sometimes disappeared for days—sometimes even weeks—taking time to herself to process things. Kara's communication during those times was never the best, so maybe this wasn't anything new. But something about the situation felt different.
"This morning, Dreamer called, asking if she needed to cover for Kara while she was conducting DEO business," Brainy continued. "I found that particularly peculiar, since Kara hasn't been seen at the DEO for exactly five days. Not counting the last three, when she hasn't been seen at all, and missed her designated training times. I did some investigating. I went to her usual spots, including her apartment. No one has seen her. I concluded she may be at the Fortress of Solitude, but it's 98.7% probable that no one has visited since the last Crisis. Also… before you ask, her tracker has been disabled."
Alex's mouth opened to ask that exact question, but she quickly found herself at a loss for words.
She recalled the last conversation they'd had, when she and Kara had been exchanging blows at the DEO.
"I don't need you to walk on eggshells around me, Alex. I'm fine," Kara had said, her voice tinged with frustration.
"Kara, I'm not walking on eggshells. You've been distant, and I've been trying to give you space to process, but you're MIA for briefings, aggressive during recent fights, and not visiting the med bay afterward. And that's just as Supergirl. As Kara, you've been overworking, disappearing randomly, and canceling game nights and sister nights. I just want to make sure you're okay."
Alex had explained, throwing a series of punches at Kara as she spoke.
"I appreciate your concern, Alex, but like I told you, I'm fine," Kara had responded, blocking a punch before landing a particularly nasty uppercut.
Alex stumbled back, stunned.
"I'm done for the day," Kara had said, turning toward the kryptonite panel to return the environment to normal levels before leaving without another word.
"Kara wait! I—" Before Alex could stop Kara, she was gone.
Alex had known that Kara had been distancing herself, but why hadn't she known her tracker had been disabled?
Was this because Kara hadn't wanted Alex to push the issue between her and Lena?
"Have you talked to J'onn?"
Brainy shook his head, his usual calm demeanor replaced with a rare hint of distress.
"No, Director. I've attempted to contact him as well. He hasn't responded. I've checked his usual places—his Martian sanctuaries, his office, even his personal quarters—and there's been no sign of him either. It's almost as if he's vanished, just like Supergirl."
Alex clenched her jaw, fighting the rising panic in her chest.
"This doesn't make sense. J'onn wouldn't just vanish, and neither would Kara, not without leaving some kind of trail."
She thought back to everything that had happened over the last few weeks. The Crisis had been devastating, and everyone had been on edge since the multiverse collapsed into Earth-Prime. But this… this felt different. Kara had always been a beacon of strength, and even though Alex knew her sister had been struggling, she never imagined things would get this bad.
"Have you checked the Fortress?" Alex asked, her mind racing.
"We can't rule it out completely, especially with Kara's… hesitation to open up lately."
Brainy nodded, though there was doubt in his expression.
"Yes, but as I said before, it's highly unlikely anyone has been there since the last Crisis. Not even Kara has mentioned it. I suspect she doesn't want to face it… face herself… alone."
Alex stared at him for a moment, piecing things together. The tension between Kara and Lena, the sudden disappearance, the disabled tracker—it wasn't just about the crisis anymore. It was something deeper. Kara was pushing people away. She was shutting down, withdrawing into herself in a way Alex had never seen before.
She couldn't let this go on.
"We need to find her," Alex said, her voice firm. "Now."
