As Alex walked briskly through the DEO halls, she felt a sense of urgency she hadn't experienced in years. Brainy had gathered what information he could, but it was clear there were no easy answers. The tracker had been disabled, no one had seen Kara in days, and no one seemed to know where she was. The Fortress of Solitude felt like the last place to search, and yet Alex couldn't shake the feeling that it was where Kara had gone to escape the world, to hide from the overwhelming weight of everything that had happened.

Kara had always had a strong sense of duty, but Alex knew better than anyone that even the strongest people needed to break sometimes. Kara wasn't invulnerable, not emotionally. Not after everything she had gone through in the past few months—losing so much, the weight of the multiverse collapse, and, more than anything, the rift with Lena. Alex didn't fully understand it, but she knew it was tearing Kara apart.

Alex pulled up the coordinates for the Fortress on her DEO tablet and prepared to leave, but before she could, a soft voice interrupted her.

"Alex?"

It was Maggie Sawyer, standing just outside the door to Alex's office. She looked hesitant, her brow furrowed with concern. "I overheard some of what Brainy was saying… About Kara."

Alex's heart sank. Maggie had become a confidant for Kara, even when she couldn't understand everything Kara was going through, but recently Kara had become distant with her as well. The tension between Kara and Lena had been felt by everyone, even Maggie.

"What's going on?" Maggie asked softly. "Do you know where she is?"

Alex sighed, rubbing her temples. "I'm trying to find out but.." She trailed off, uncertain. "I don't know why she would shut us all out like this."

Maggie stepped forward, her voice full of empathy. "I know little Danvers. I don't think she's trying to shut you out, Alex. I think she's scared. She's been dealing with so much, and maybe… maybe she just needs space to heal. To figure things out."

Alex met Maggie's gaze. "But we can't just leave her alone, isolated. Not like this. If she's in trouble, if she's falling apart—"

"Then you need to be there for her," Maggie interrupted gently. "But maybe she just needs to know you're not going to give up on her. Sometimes, people don't reach out because they don't want to burden anyone. Maybe she needs to feel like she's not alone before she can open up."

Alex nodded, a weight settling in her chest. Maggie was right. Kara needed her—more than ever—but Kara needed to feel like she could trust them again, too.

"Let's go," Alex said. "We're going to find her; I won't let her be alone."

The journey to the Fortress of Solitude was quiet, the cold, icy landscape stretching out before them as they flew toward Kara's sanctuary. Alex sat beside Brainy, her thoughts spinning, wondering what she'd find when they arrived.

When the Fortress finally came into view, the towering crystalline structure stood stark against the white snow-covered mountains. It felt as distant as Kara had been lately.

Inside, the silence was deafening. Kara had always used the Fortress as a place to retreat, but now it seemed like a tomb—a place where all the pain and memories were buried under layers of ice and solitude.

As they entered, the familiar hum of the Fortress's systems greeted them, but there was no sign of Kara. The place felt abandoned, even though Alex knew it wasn't.

"Where is she?" Alex asked, a sense of dread creeping into her voice.

"I'm scanning for any signs of her presence," Brainy said, his eyes narrowing as he worked.

The vast silence of the Fortress was unnerving. The doors, massive and imposing, creaked softly in the wind as Alex and the team stepped inside, their footsteps echoing eerily through the hollow halls. Every inch of the crystalline structure seemed to be waiting, but for what, Alex couldn't tell. There was a growing sense of dread in the pit of her stomach, a nagging feeling that something wasn't right.

"Where is she?" Maggie whispered, her voice strained as she looked around, the glow from the Fortress' crystals casting long shadows across the floor.

Alex scanned the chamber, her heart hammering. She had expected Kara to be here, secluded but safe—away from the world and the burden of being Supergirl. But now, with no sign of her, the reality of the situation hit harder than before.

"Brainy," Alex called, turning toward the green-skinned AI, "Are you sure you can track her energy signal?"

Brainy nodded, though his face betrayed his unease.

"Yes, Director. I calibrated the readings to account for any fluctuations. Kara's signature was here… just moments ago. But now… there's nothing."

Alex clenched her fists, frustration mounting.

"She's here somewhere," she muttered, more to herself than anyone else.

Kara wouldn't just vanish. She couldn't. Alex refused to believe that. Her mind reeled through possibilities. What if Kara had left in a hurry? What if she'd been taken? No. No one knew the Fortress like Kara did. She wouldn't be caught off guard here.

"Check the surrounding chambers," Alex ordered. "She has to be somewhere."

They fanned out, moving quickly but cautiously through the halls. The wind outside howled, but inside the Fortress was deathly still. Alex's thoughts raced—something was off. She could feel it in her bones. Kara wouldn't leave without a trace. Whatever had caused her to disappear this time was different. The Fortress was supposed to be a sanctuary, but now it felt more like a maze of cold, deserted rooms, each one darker and emptier than the last. They continued searching, each minute stretching longer than the last. Alex entered a smaller chamber; a room Kara had often used as a retreat when she needed solitude. She froze as she stepped over the threshold, her eyes scanning the space. There, by the far wall, Kara's journal lay open on the ground—its pages fluttering gently in the draft, as though abandoned in haste.

Alex's heart skipped a beat.

"Alex!" Maggie's voice came from the other side of the hall. "Over here!"

Alex rushed to her, her heart pounding. Maggie was kneeling near a wall, her fingers brushing over a strange crack that had appeared in the Fortress' crystal wall. It wasn't there before. The markings were faint, but something about them made Alex's pulse race.

"This… this doesn't look natural," Maggie said, her voice low. "It's like something was forced through here."

Alex studied the crack, her mind spinning. The Fortress' walls were nearly indestructible. What could have caused this?

Brainy arrived just behind them, his eyes widening as he took in the sight. "This… this could be a breach. Someone or something may have entered or exited the Fortress."

"But how?" Alex's voice was tight, a mix of anger and worry. "Kara wouldn't have done this. Not unless something forced her."

She stood up, frustration and panic rising in her chest. Her eyes scanned the surrounding area. The crack and the journal were the only sign of disturbance—everything else was untouched, as if the Fortress itself was holding its breath, waiting for something more to happen.

"Kara's Journal" Alex walked over to the book and gently picked it up

As Alex held Kara's journal in her hands, the weight of it felt heavier than it ever had before. The soft flutter of the pages in the draft seemed to echo the uncertainty that gnawed at her. She glanced down at the open page, but her mind was too distracted by the situation to focus on the words. Something was terribly wrong—Kara had always cherished this journal, never allowing it to fall out of her sight. The fact that it was left here, discarded, felt like a sign.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she turned the page. The ink was fresh, the last entry rushed, almost frantic, as if Kara had been trying to write something, to make sense of it all, before being interrupted. But there was no time to read more. The crack in the wall, the missing energy signature, and now this… everything pointed to something sinister lurking just beneath the surface.

"We're running out of time," Alex muttered, her eyes narrowing as she stood up and scanned the room once more. She could almost feel Kara's presence in the air, but it was so faint, as though the very space had swallowed her whole. The strange crack in the wall tugged at her focus again.

"That crack... it's not just a breach," Brainy said, his voice tight with concern as he knelt to study the jagged edges. "This doesn't match anything I've seen before. It's not Kryptonian, and it's not a standard breach. This… this has been altered—manipulated."

Alex's heart skipped a beat. "So, someone planned this?"

"I believe so," Brainy replied, his brow furrowed. "And judging by the nature of the energy fluctuations I detected earlier; this might not have been a forced entry... but an invitation. The energy patterns seem to have been guided."

Alex's blood ran cold. Guided? As in someone had lured Kara into the Fortress?

She turned on her heel, heading toward the door. "We need to find out who did this, now."

Maggie hurried after her, voice low and urgent. "Alex, wait—what are we going to do once we find her? If she's not here, if someone took her… what do we know about this breach?"

Alex's mind was a storm of possibilities, but she pushed them aside for the moment. Her priority was Kara's safety. "We'll deal with that when we find her, Maggie. First, we need to know where this breach leads."

Brainy stood, his eyes scanning the crack one more time. "I've never seen anything like it. It could lead anywhere… or anyone." He paused, looking grim. "It's possible the breach opened a portal to another location. We may be dealing with a different force entirely."

"Then let's find out where it leads," Alex said, her voice hardened. "Kara doesn't just vanish without a reason. Whoever did this is connected to everything that's been happening—the disappearance, the manipulation of energy, and whatever force is behind this breach."

Maggie stepped forward, her voice a little shakier than usual. "But what if... what if we're too late?"

Alex turned to her, meeting her eyes with a fierce resolve. "We're not too late. Not as long as there's still a chance to save her."

"Wait," Brainy said, frowning deeply. "There's something else. The energy signature that was coming from Kara... It's changing. It's still faint, but it's moving."

Alex's pulse quickened. "What do you mean, moving?"

"It's not stable. It's fluctuating rapidly, as though someone or something is manipulating it," Brainy explained. "But it's leading away from here."

Alex's mind spun. Kara was alive. She was somewhere out there, but where? What had happened? And why hadn't she left a clear trail? Had someone taken her?

"We need to move. Now." Alex's voice was sharp, resolute. "Where's the signal leading?"

Brainy quickly ran another diagnostic. "It's heading toward a remote region, beyond the boundaries of the Fortress. There's a hidden underground chamber in that area—only Kara and a select few know about it."

Alex's eyes narrowed. Her sister had never taken anyone to that chamber before—not even Lena. It was a place of deep personal significance for Kara, a place where she had once gone to reflect after the weight of the world had crushed her. Could it be that Kara had retreated there again?

"We're going there," Alex said, her tone brokering no argument.

Without waiting for a response, she took off toward the exit, her pace quickening as the adrenaline surged through her. Maggie and Brainy were right behind her. The cold wind slapped against their faces as they crossed the vast expanse of the Fortress' outer grounds. It felt different now—threatening. The deep snow crunched underfoot, the bitter chill seeping into their bones. Finally, they arrived at the entrance to the hidden chamber. It was a small door, easily overlooked by anyone who didn't know exactly where to look. Alex's hand trembled as she reached for the handle. This was it. The moment of truth. Whatever had happened to Kara, whatever had driven her to this point, they were about to find out. The door creaked open, and Alex stepped inside, her eyes searching the dimly lit room.

Kara was there, hunched in the far corner, her back to them. Her posture was broken, slumped, as if every inch of her strength had been drained.

"Kara?" Alex's voice was barely a whisper, the words caught in her throat.

Kara flinched, but didn't turn around.

"I'm sorry," Kara's voice was raw, hollow. "I didn't want anyone to see me like this." Alex's chest tightened.

"Kara, look at me. Please."

For a moment, Kara didn't move. Then, slowly, she turned. Her eyes were red and swollen, her face pale and empty of the usual spark. She looked… lost.

"I didn't know where else to go," Kara said, her voice barely audible. "I don't know how to fix this, Alex. I don't even know where to start."

Kara's words hung in the air like a storm cloud, heavy and uncertain. Alex's heart clenched at the vulnerability in her sister's voice—this wasn't the Kara she knew, the fearless hero who faced insurmountable odds with a smile and a determination that could move mountains. This was someone broken, someone who had reached the end of her rope.

"I messed up with Lena," Kara continued, her voice cracking with emotion. Her eyes were wide, as if pleading for Alex to understand, but there was a panic bubbling just beneath the surface. "I tried to fix it, I swear I did, but I only made things worse."

Alex's breath caught in her chest as she took a step closer. She could see it now, the way Kara was shaking, the way her hands were balled into fists at her sides. Alex knew this look—Kara was on the edge of something. It wasn't just the stress of being Supergirl or the aftermath of the Crisis. This was something personal. Something deeper.

"Hey," Alex said softly, trying to calm her sister, "We'll figure it out, okay? Just… breathe, Kara. It's gonna be okay."

But Kara's eyes were darting around the room now, her chest rising and falling with quick, shallow breaths. She was slipping away from her sister's grasp, and Alex could feel it. Her heart raced in sync with Kara's growing panic.

"I can't do this, Alex!" Kara's voice raised, the panic turning into something desperate. "I can't fix it. Lena, the whole damn situation… I've ruined everything. She deserves better than me."

Alex's instincts kicked in. She stepped forward again, but before she could reach out to her sister, Kara stumbled back, her feet tangling in the rough floor as she scrambled toward the far corner of the room.

"No, Kara, wait!" Alex called, her voice urgent.

Kara's eyes were wild, her breath coming in jagged gasps as she glanced back at Alex. "I can't stay here. I can't face anyone—I can't face her." Her voice trembled with a raw, painful admission, as though saying it out loud made it too real.

Without another word, Kara spun on her heel, her movements quick and erratic. Alex lunged forward, her hand outstretched, but Kara was already bolting for the door. In a flash, she was gone—faster than Alex could react.

"Kara!" Alex shouted, but it was too late.

Kara had run.

Alex stood frozen for a heartbeat, her mind spinning. She could see it now, the pattern. The panic. The self-destructive behavior. It wasn't the first time Kara had run from something. This wasn't just about being Supergirl or the weight of the world on her shoulders. This was about something more personal, more fragile. And if Alex didn't catch up to her, Kara might spiral completely out of control.

"Kara, don't do this!" Alex muttered, shaking herself out of her shock and dashing toward the exit.

Behind her, Maggie and Brainy exchanged worried glances before following Alex. Brainy, ever the logical one, was already scanning the Fortress with a series of rapid diagnostics.

"We can track her," Brainy said, his voice low but focused. "The energy signature... I can lock onto it again."

But even as he spoke, the dread in Alex's stomach deepened. She had seen Kara running from emotional turmoil before, but not like this. This wasn't the usual retreat to the Fortress for some space to think—it was a flight. A full-on attempt to escape, to bury whatever hurt had gotten too deep for Kara to deal with.

"Do it," Alex urged, her voice strained with urgency. "We need to find her now."

They rushed down the icy hallways, Alex pushing herself to the limit as she followed the faint traces of Kara's energy signature. Each turn, each step felt like they were closing in, but the longer they searched, the more Alex felt her gut tighten. This wasn't just about finding Kara. This was about preventing her from doing something impulsive, something that could hurt her more in the long run.

Alex's mind flashed back to the last conversation she had with Kara before the disappearance. The fight in the DEO training room. Kara had refused to talk. She had refused to open up about Lena, about the cracks in their relationship. And now, Alex could see the aftermath of that silence—the way it had festered inside Kara, twisting her emotions until they were beyond her control.

"Kara!" Alex called again, desperation creeping into her voice. She couldn't lose her sister.

Alex strode towards the center of one of the chambers, where a hidden control panel lay beneath the surface of the floor. Kara had always kept it well hidden, but Alex knew the Fortress better than anyone and she had left it exposed in her rush to leave. She slid her hand over the panel, activating the system with a hiss. The floor began to shift, and slowly, a hidden doorway revealed itself beneath the crystalline walls.

The group exchanged uneasy glances before following Alex into the narrow, darkened passageway beyond. The air was thick with the smell of ancient stone and ice. It felt like they were descending into a crypt, and Alex could feel the tension building in the pit of her stomach with each step they took.

The deeper they went, the more oppressive the silence became. The only sounds were the soft scrape of their boots on the icy floor and the low hum of the Fortress's remaining energy. Alex's breath quickened as the temperature dropped—an unnatural chill that seemed to seep into her bones. It was as if the Fortress itself was preparing them for something terrible.

Then, ahead of them, the passage widened into a cavernous room. Its walls were lined with crystalline structures that pulsed with dim, eerie light. At the far end of the room, a glowing portal flickered weakly, its colors shifting like a dying star.

Kara was standing in front of it, but she wasn't alone.

A figure cloaked in shadows stood beside her. The dark outline was familiar, but Alex couldn't place it. All she could see were its cold, glowing eyes, locked on Kara. The air around them seemed to vibrate with a strange energy that was both familiar and alien, like the hum of Kryptonian technology combined with something darker, older.

"Kara!" Alex shouted, stepping forward.

Kara flinched at the sound of her name, but she didn't turn to face them. Instead, she stood frozen, her hands trembling as she stared into the portal, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and determination.

"Don't come any closer," Kara's voice was barely a whisper, but it rang through the cavern like a warning. "I have to do this, Alex. I have to fix what I've broken."

"Kara, what are you talking about?" Alex's voice cracked as she took another step. "Whatever this is… it's not the answer."

Kara's shoulders slumped as if the weight of the world had fallen on them. "I don't know how to make it right. Lena... I've hurt her. I tried to fix it, but I just made everything worse." Her voice shook. "I'm not strong enough. I can't keep doing this anymore."

Alex's heart broke. She wanted to reach out, to pull Kara back to safety, but something in her sister's eyes stopped her. There was a darkness there, a fear so deep it threatened to swallow her whole.

The cloaked figure spoke, its voice cold and distant. "She has no choice. This is her only option. You cannot save her."

Alex froze, her gaze snapping to the figure. "Who are you?"

The figure stepped into the light, revealing a face that was half shadow, half bone—a haunting image of someone Alex knew all too well.

And in that instant, she realized—this was the one who had been pulling the strings all along. The one who had orchestrated Kara's downfall.

Lena.

But it wasn't the Lena she knew.

It was something else. Something twisted.

"Stay back, Alex," Kara pleaded, her voice shaking. "Please."

Alex's pulse raced as she realized the magnitude of the danger they were in. This wasn't just about Kara anymore. This was bigger than both of them.

And time was running out.
