Andromeda and Narcissa (and Kreacher) determined that in addition to studying for NEWTs and getting ready to join the Wizengamot, he needed to research his family's legacies. So he took a trip to Gringotts and with mildly helpful goblins, managed to get family grimoires and packets of parchment on the three families. He decided he would start with Potter as the most recent and most connected.
There were two properties mentioned: a place called Potter's Den and the house in Godric's Hollow. There was an addendum that the cottage was being held as a State Memorial with the ministry paying a thousand galleons a year to rent it. It would still need massive repairs so it would hold until he was ready to work on it.
There were apparition coordinates for Potter's Den so he decided to start there. He apparated after packing a bag of "essentials" Kreacher claimed he'd need.
He ended up in a field with no property to see, just an old stone statue of a stag. He concentrated on feeling the magic around him. He had been doing something similar at Grimmauld, helping to detect cursed items before he picked anything up. He felt a connection to the statue and pressed a hand against it, feeding it some of his magic. Suddenly, a large country house and barn developed before his eyes, melting into view.
Harry stepped forward carefully at first and then more confident as he learned the image wouldn't vanish. He explored the barn as it was closest and found gardening tools and a section that looked like it was for different hobbies. There was a clay spinning wheel and a bunch of small porcelain animals on a shelf as well as a large loom with what looked like an ornate tapestry half done. He ran a gentle hand over the cloth, wondering who had been weaving it.
He turned away and headed up to the house. It was sprawling but still comfortably sized. The door facing the statue opened to a foyer that housed a large stone fireplace, for Floo guests he assumed. He continued to the left, discovering a dining room with a large table and a well thought out kitchen with two ovens and a butcher block for preparing food. There was also a mud room off the kitchen and when he looked out the windows, he saw there was a large pond a few hundred feet away.
Turning, he then explored the right half of the house, finding a room with musical instruments, some sitting rooms, and some guest rooms. He noticed that while there were portraits adorning the walls, they were all sleeping. He called Kreacher.
"Kreacher, how do I wake up the portraits?"
"Master must tap the notch on the corner of the portrait he wishes to speak with ad send a magic pulse. The portrait will be waking."
"Oh. Thanks Kreacher, you can go back to what you were doing."
He bowed and popped away.
Harry walked around some more, recognizing some of the names written on the frames from the parchment Gringotts had given him. He was looking for more recent relatives though. It was nice to see though, the dark skin and unruly hair that had separated him from the Dursleys were common in his family's past. The family recognized their Indian roots and seemed to frequently marry witches from the subcontinent.
He moved upstairs and found an office/study room with a dark red wooden desk and shelves built to the ceiling in the same shade. There was a comfortable looking chair behind the desk and a pair of leather armchairs in the middle of the room with a metal serving table in between. He sank into one of the armchairs and looked around. Then, he saw him, his grandfather who he had only seen once in that odd dream space of the Lordship ring.
Immediately he rushed over and woke the portrait.
Charlus blinked and stretched, just like a live person waking after a long rest, before his eyes seemed to focus on the young man before him.
"Well hello there. May I ask the year and your name?"
"It's 1998 and I'm your grandson, Harry Potter."
"Well that's quite a bit of time passed. I'm assuming James is gone?"
It was odd having the same conversation he'd had in the ring realm, but he hoped the portrait would last longer than a dream.
"Yes, he and my mum were murdered in 1981."
"Ah, I passed in 1979 and remember this portrait waking up briefly in 1980 for James to tell me he was having a baby, you, and that he was putting the manor in lockdown for the duration of the war." They both went silent for a moment. "What can I help you with, Harry?"
"I was hoping…to learn about the family. I grew up away from magic so I'm still learning but I wanna make my parents proud."
Charlus nodded from his painted armchair. "A worthy goal. I'll teach you what I can and for what I cannot, there are other, older portraits. Let's start with the family motto. I'm sure you have learned it's in Hindi. We are proud of our roots and each Potter child is brought up to speak Hindi and write in Devanagari script, that is the writing system of most Indian languages. I can teach some of it but what I would recommend is finding a tutor, perhaps a Patel. We've long had a connection with them as cousins. They will help you I'm sure.
"Then the second half of the motto, what it means. Every Potter has had a streak of ingenuity and drive. It may be in wanting to be the first to discover something or wanting to create something from your own two hands. Whatever drives you to innovate is something to be treasured. I want you to think on what motivates you. Then, we can begin lessons on what it means to be Lord Potter." With that he shifted and went back to sleep.
Harry's eyebrows rose and he took that as a sign to go home. He apparated back to Grimmauld, hoping to study the Potter grimoire, and saw an owl had left a note from Miles.
Harry,
If you're still amenable, maybe we could meet for coffee (muggle side) and talk about studying together. Send me a note if there's a time that works
Ta,
Miles
