Chapter 10: Starlight Carnival: Act 1

Starlight Carnival

Music: Starlight Carnival - Act 1 - Sonic Colors

Sonic dashed out of a ship's loading bay and landed gracefully on the glowing purple energy path that twisted through Starlight Carnival. The air was thick with neon lights, fireworks, and the hum of machinery. Above him, enormous ships hovered like colossal guardians, and the bright neon lights of space illuminated everything around. The contrast between the darkness of space and the brilliant neon atmosphere was dazzling.

"Alright, Eggman. Let's see what kind of crazy obstacle course you've set up this time," Sonic remarked with a determined grin.

Ahead of him, two Egg Chasers zoomed into view, their laser cannons already warming up. They took aim at Sonic, lasers crackling through the air. The hedgehog sidestepped the attacks with ease. However, the Egg Chasers weren't exactly known for their piloting skills, and as they swerved to lock onto the speeding hedgehog once again, they crashed directly into a parked shuttle on the side of the path, the explosion scattering debris.

Eggman's voice boomed over the PA system, his annoyance evident.

"Attention, guests! Please note that our well-trained security team may sometimes experience... navigation issues. Don't worry—they're fine. Probably."

Sonic chuckled to himself but didn't slow down. His sharp eyes caught movement ahead—Neoshadows and Star Sentries were emerging onto the path. The Heartless appeared to be patrolling the area, their yellow eyes glowing ominously against the neon-lit backdrop.

"Alright, let's dance," Sonic muttered as he crouched low, gathering speed for a Spin Dash.

With a burst of energy, Sonic launched himself into the group of Neoshadows, sending them flying as he spun through the dark creatures. With the Neoshadows bursting into darkness, Sonic seamlessly transitioned into a Homing Attack, bouncing between the Star Sentries with quick precision. Sparks flew as he took them down one by one, his moves fluid and precise.

"Too easy!" Sonic grinned, watching as the last of the Heartless dissolved into nothingness.

As Sonic charged forward, the path began to curve, twisting and turning through the surreal environment of floating ships and glowing platforms. Neon lights flickered beneath his feet, and the landscape shifted as more ships docked in the distance, each filled with new dangers.

Ahead, a gap in the energy path loomed, with floating objects scattered across the void. Sonic launched into the air, using his Homing Attack to bounce between the objects, maintaining his momentum as he zipped across the empty space. Each target exploded in a shower of sparks as Sonic's precision strikes hit them dead-on, ensuring he kept moving forward.

In the distance, he spotted another path leading to a massive hovering ship. His eyes narrowed as he zeroed in on it.

"That's where the fun begins," he muttered under his breath.

Eggman's voice interrupted again, full of fake cheerfulness.

"Attention, the anti-gravity toilets on this level are out of order. We are sorry for this inconvenience and hope you can hold it for another 20,000 light years!"

"Yeah, typical Eggman. Always focusing on the important stuff," Sonic remarked as he dived towards the ship.

As soon as he touched down inside the ship, he was met with the sight of multiple paths and rooms branching out in different directions. Heartless patrols filled the corridors, their glowing eyes scanning for intruders. Sonic's eyes landed on a capsule with a Blue Wisp waiting to be freed.

"Alright, little buddy. Time to show 'em what you got," Sonic said with a grin, smashing the capsule open.

The Blue Wisp zipped into Sonic, transforming him into a cube-like form. The bodiless announcer shouted, "CUBE!" and Sonic felt the sudden surge of power. The transformation allowed him to smash through crates and obstacles that blocked his path, the sheer force of his new form breaking everything in his way.

With each step, Sonic's Cube form also converted rings above him into solid platforms, giving him new paths to run across. He quickly leaped from one platform to the next, dodging enemy fire from the Star Sentries lurking in the corridors.

"Now this is what I'm talking about!" Sonic shouted as he plowed through a group of enemies and crates, clearing the way ahead.

The ship's interior opened up into another room, and Sonic could see his exit—another energy path glowing in the distance, ready to take him deeper into Starlight Carnival. Without missing a beat, he leaped off the edge, free-falling toward the next section.

As Sonic tumbled through the air, he caught sight of a group of Motobugs and Star Sentries, ready to block his path.

"Alright, let's pick up the pace!" Sonic shouted as he landed, activating his Boost.

With a burst of speed, Sonic darted ahead of his pursuers, quick-stepping between laser fire and obstacles as the neon world blurred around him. The Motobugs were no match for Sonic's agility, and one by one, they were destroyed, giving him more energy to fuel his Boost.

More ships warped in, their cargo doors opened, and Sonic was flung into one of them, landing inside with barely a moment to breathe.

"Here we go again," Sonic muttered, eyeing the corridor lined with crushers.

Timing his movements, he stopped just in time to avoid being flattened, dashing through the narrow spaces as the crushers rose and fell. Each step required perfect precision, but Sonic never lost his momentum.

Finally, the corridor opened up, revealing another energy path littered with floating platforms and objects. Sonic grinned as he launched into a series of Homing Attacks, bouncing from one target to the next with ease.

Sonic landed on the next platform with a light thud, his momentum carrying him forward. The energy path beneath him shimmered and pulsed as it twisted and turned, leading deeper into the neon-lit expanse of Starlight Carnival. But this time, the landscape shifted—the energy paths began to rise and fall, dipping into waves like a glowing roller coaster suspended in space.

"Alright, what've you got for me now?" Sonic muttered to himself, his eyes scanning the horizon for the next challenge.

Almost immediately, the platform ahead began to fracture, breaking apart into smaller floating pieces. Sonic's instincts kicked in as he dashed forward, leaping between the crumbling platforms. The pieces hovered briefly before plummeting into the void below, forcing Sonic to move fast, or risk falling into the endless starry abyss.

As Sonic sprinted, a familiar voice echoed from the sky.

"Attention, guests! If you experience explosive decompression, please try to avoid staining the seat cushions. Those things are expensive!"

"Really, Eggman? Decompression? You're running out of good material," Sonic remarked with a small laugh.

Ahead, the energy path split into multiple winding routes that looped in spirals, glowing brilliantly under the neon lights. Sonic didn't hesitate and chose the middle route, boosting through the tight curves as lasers from turrets began firing at him. As he dashed through the loops and twists, more fireworks burst overhead, making the entire course feel like a high-speed amusement ride.

The lasers fired wildly from both sides as Sonic zigzagged between them.

"Due to a slight technical malfunction, the lasers may... slightly disintegrate you," Eggman said, his voice booming through the PA System once again. "Please stay calm and enjoy the fireworks while we attempt to recalibrate. Or don't. I'm not picky."

The path looped around and shot upward. Sonic launched into the air, performing a series of Homing Attacks to bounce off floating objects in the void. Each strike sent sparks flying, and Sonic ricocheted between them with ease.

As he landed on another platform, more Star Sentries appeared, floating defensively and taking aim at the hedgehog.

"Alright, let's do this," Sonic muttered.

"If there is anyone here who has experience with upper orbit theme park gravitational control systems, please report to the main office immediately. In the meantime, we hope you don't mind a few… malfunctions. Carry on!" Eggman announced.

"Malfunctions, huh? This whole place is one big malfunction!" Sonic shouted, dashing forward to meet the incoming sentries.

With a burst of speed, Sonic smashed through the Star Sentries, using his Spin Dash and Homing Attack to take them down one by one. He moved like lightning, dodging their laser blasts and countering with pinpoint precision.

As the final sentry exploded in a shower of sparks, the platform beneath him shifted once again, smoothly gliding toward another section of the course. Sonic's sharp eyes caught sight of a glowing capsule up ahead. Inside, a Wisp, shaped like an orange rocket with two green eyes stacked vertically, was trapped, its light pulsating in rhythm with the neon surroundings.

"Now we're talking!" Sonic shouted, smashing the capsule open.

The Orange Wisp spiraled around him before zipping into his body, and the bodiless announcer's voice rang out with energy.

"ROCKET!"

In an instant, Sonic shot into the sky like a firework, the force of the Rocket Wisp launching him high above the carnival. The entire park sprawled beneath him, the lights of the ships and the neon displays glowing like a galaxy of their own. Sonic soared upward, his vision filled with dazzling lights and flashes of colors.

"Attention! Please be advised that our spectacular fireworks show is for your enjoyment only. Unauthorised guests using rocket propulsion are strictly prohibited—I'm talking about you, Sonic!" Eggman announced in annoyance through the PA system.

Sonic laughed as he rocketed through the sky, flipping mid-air to get a better view of the course below.

"Yeah, right. Try and stop me, Eggman!" he taunted.

As he reached the peak of his flight, Sonic spotted another platform below, and he canceled the Rocket form, landing gracefully back on the energy path. No sooner had he touched down than he was met with the dark, swirling forms of Neoshadows emerging from the void.

"Of course! Let's keep things interesting," Sonic muttered, crouching low and preparing for a fight.

The Neoshadows lunged at him with their dark claws, but Sonic was ready. He dashed forward, ducking under their slashes before spinning into a Spin Dash, taking out the first few Heartless. The others didn't stand a chance as Sonic transitioned into a flurry of Homing Attacks, each strike hitting with perfect accuracy.

"Nice try, Eggman! But your Heartless aren't much of a challenge."

The PA crackled again, and Eggman's irritated voice came through.

"Security to sector four! We have a certain blue nuisance that needs immediate... termination. Oh, and would the spiky blonde guest with the giant sword please refrain from decimating my well-trained Heartless team? Thank you."

"Wait... spiky blonde guest? That sounds like Cloud!" Sonic remarked. "Time to speed things up!"

Sonic's legs blurred beneath him as he raced down the twisting neon paths of Starlight Carnival, his mind already locked on the idea of Cloud being somewhere in this bizarre park. The energy paths split ahead, rising and falling like waves, while laser turrets popped out from hidden alcoves, firing rapid bursts of energy at him. He dodged with ease, quick-stepping between the shots, the adrenaline of the chase pushing him forward.

Just as Sonic launched off another platform with a Homing Attack chain, Eggman's voice crackled over the PA system again.

"Guests are kindly reminded that falling into the abyss of space is considered a hazard. We kindly ask that you refrain from plummeting to your doom. And as for any blue hedgehogs? Please... take a dive."

Sonic chuckled, dodging the lasers as he bounced between floating platforms.

"Yeah, yeah, Egghead. If I fall, it won't be into space—it'll be right back into your plans!"

As Sonic landed on another stretch of energy path, more Star Sentries and Neoshadows appeared, but Sonic was already in motion. With a quick spin, he took out the Heartless with a Spin Dash, clearing his path. He dashed forward, feeling the wind rush past him as he burst through another swarm of enemies.

Suddenly, the ground beneath him began to split, the platform breaking apart into smaller chunks that hovered precariously in space. Sonic leaped between the pieces, his feet barely touching the ground before he was airborne again. Fireworks burst overhead, casting vibrant colors across the dark sky as Sonic kept up his momentum, weaving between the floating debris.

As he dashed along a narrow path, another announcement from Eggman blared over the PA.

"Captain Marvel, you are officially a pain in my side! And Tails? You and that girl need to stop snooping around my park! Security is on its way to deal with you immediately!"

"Looks like they're keeping busy too," Sonic said to himself with a smirk.

The path dipped again, sending Sonic into a freefall through a tunnel of light. He twisted in the air, dodging floating crates and lasers as he plummeted toward another ship below. With a quick boost, he zoomed through the tunnel and landed gracefully on a platform, his feet already propelling him forward.

Ahead, Sonic spotted a Blue Wisp capsule rotating in place. He smashed it open, and the Wisp spiraled into his body. The bodiless announcer boomed once more, "CUBE!" Sonic felt the familiar surge of power, and he transformed, his body glowing blue.

"Let's smash some blocks," Sonic quipped.

With the Cube form active, Sonic slammed into the ground, transforming the rings hovering above him into solid blocks. He used these new platforms to leap higher, smashing through enemies and obstacles with ease. Cube strikes scattered the Neoshadows, leaving only darkness in their wake as Sonic bulldozed his way through.

More Heartless emerged ahead, and Sonic quickly dashed through them, the Cube power fading as he launched back into high-speed action. He landed on another glowing platform, taking a moment to look around. The neon lights flickered as the giant ships hovered ominously in the distance, their thrusters burning bright against the night sky.

Eggman's voice echoed once more, his tone dripping with frustration.

"To the brooding blonde! You and your oversized butter knife are causing too much damage to my precious Heartless! Show some respect for my park, will you?!"

Sonic chuckled, "Cloud's really making himself at home, huh? Better find him before Egghead completely loses it."

The path ahead straightened out, and Sonic spotted the telltale glow of the Goal Ring hovering just ahead. But before he could reach it, a final wave of Motobugs and Star Sentries appeared, blocking his way. Sonic grinned, his legs tensing in anticipation.

"Time to wrap this up!" Sonic declared.

With a burst of speed, Sonic zipped forward, dodging the Motobugs with ease and performing a series of Homing Attacks on the sentries. He bounced between targets like a pinball, the explosions lighting up the dark space around him as he cleared the final wave of enemies.

As the last sentry exploded, the Goal Ring shimmered ahead, spinning slowly.. Sonic didn't hesitate—he dashed forward, his shoes a blur as he made his way toward it.

"Guests are reminded that unauthorised personnel—specifically blue hedgehogs—are NOT permitted to access the Goal Rings. Violators will be… ejected. Into space. Thank you," Eggman remarked, his voice booming with frustration through the PA system again.

Sonic laughed as he launched himself into the air, flipping gracefully as he passed through the Goal Ring. A triumphant sound echoed across Starlight Carnival, and Sonic landed on the other side with a perfect slide.

"Whew! Another zone down," Sonic said to himself, throwing up a victory pose. "Now to find Cloud and see what's really going on around here."

RANK: S

Sonic stood, tapping his foot impatiently as he glanced around the neon-lit expanse of Starlight Carnival. His eyes scanned the environment, the bright lights and glowing paths stretching out in every direction, but there was no sign of Cloud. He let out a sigh, wondering just where the spiky-haired swordsman could be.

"Where is this guy…?" Sonic muttered to himself.

Suddenly, a voice came from nearby, low and calm but with a noticeable edge.

"You're Sonic, right?"

Sonic spun around to see Cloud stepping out of the shadows, his massive sword slung across his back. His eyes, serious and sharp, locked onto Sonic's with a quiet intensity.

Sonic grinned, his casual demeanor returning.

"Sure am! And I remember you from the Coliseum. Sorry we didn't get to properly introduce ourselves back then," the hedgehog said.

Cloud's gaze didn't waver, though there was a subtle hint of amusement in his eyes.

"Well, you did run headfirst into a dark portal when you faced Knuckles," Cloud recalled. "It didn't exactly leave much time for chit-chat."

"What can I say? A friend in peril—had to save the day, right?" Sonic replied with a shrug.

Cloud's expression softened for a brief moment, but his voice remained blunt.

"Right," Cloud retorted back.

The two stood there for a beat, the glow of the carnival casting strange shadows across the platform. Sonic broke the silence, his tone a little more serious.

"By the way, Tifa's looking for you," Sonic said, studying Cloud's face for a reaction. "But she's got a hunch you're here because of this… Sephiroth guy, right?"

At the mention of Sephiroth, Cloud's face darkened, his eyes narrowing slightly as he looked away.

"Sephiroth..." Cloud repeated, the name rolling off his tongue with a weight that made Sonic's fur prickle. "He's more than just a guy. He's a remnant of my past. He's the darkness that keeps pulling me back in, no matter how far I try to run from it."

Sonic scratched his head, trying to make sense of it all.

"So, why would he be lurking around Starlight Carnival of all places?" The hedgehog questioned. "It's not like he's here for the rides, the attractions, or the snacks."

"I don't know exactly why he's here. But I have a hunch it's tied to this Eggman," Cloud remarked. "The darkness that's been consuming these worlds, the way the Heartless are showing up… It's all connected. And Sephiroth thrives in places where the darkness is strong."

"Danvers said she heard rumors about this guy. She's no stranger to dark threats, but she's never come face to face with him," Sonic explained.

Cloud's eyes shifted back to Sonic, his face hardening again.

"Danvers? Captain Marvel, right?" he questioned.

Sonic nodded, "Yeah, how'd you know?" the hedgehog asked.

Cloud's tone remained calm, but there was a hint of respect in his voice.

"I've heard of her. She's a hero across many worlds, fighting to protect space from threats even beyond what I've dealt with. If she's involved, then the stakes are higher than I thought."

"So, we've got Eggman causing chaos with his machines, trapping these Wisps, and now this Sephiroth guy's lurking in the shadows. Looks like we've got our hands full," Sonic admitted.

"I didn't come here looking for a fight with Eggman. But if Sephiroth is involved, it means things are worse than I thought. His presence can only mean one thing—he's after something tied to this park. Something powerful enough to feed his darkness," Cloud replied, turning his gaze to the blue hedgehog fully.

Sonic tapped his foot, considering Cloud's words.

"So what do you think he's after? The Wisps' energy?" Sonic probed.

Cloud shook his head, but was deep in thought.

"Maybe. Or maybe it's something deeper," Cloud retorted. "Sephiroth doesn't act without reason. Whatever his purpose, it's always tied to the heart of a world's darkness."

Sonic looked down the glowing path ahead of them, his mind racing.

"Well, I've still got a generator to smash and Wisps to save. But helping you stop this Sephiroth guy? That's right up my alley too," Sonic affirmed with a grin.

Cloud nodded, though his expression remained guarded.

"Just be careful. Sephiroth isn't like the enemies you've faced before. He's a force of pure destruction. Even if we do find him, it won't be easy," Cloud warned.

"Hey, nothing worth doing ever is. Besides, between me, you, Carol, and Tifa, I'd say we've got this covered," Sonic exclaimed, determined to save the day.

Cloud remained silent for a moment, but there was a subtle shift in his demeanor, a flicker of something close to appreciation.

"Let's get moving," Cloud finally said. "The longer we wait, the more ground Sephiroth gains."

"Right," Sonic agreed, already gearing up for another run. "Tails is with Tifa, and I'm sure Carol's handling whatever Eggman's throwing at her. Let's track down that generator, and then we'll take care of Sephiroth."

With that, Sonic turned and dashed ahead, his blue streak lighting up the dark path. Cloud followed at a measured pace, ready to hunt down Sephiroth.
