"Mojo"
Bree's confidence is knocked by her encounter with Rodissius, but when a blackout hits the building and everyone else is stuck in mission command, will she steel herself to save the day? And what is the mysterious invention of Chase's that has everyone's attention?
FADE IN.
SCENE ONE.
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(CHASE, SKYLAR, OLIVER, KAZ and BREE (in that order, with BREE bringing up the rear, a few paces behind the others), enter the penthouse through the front door. They are in their mission suits, having clearly just returned from another successful mission. They all look happy with themselves, but exhausted, but BREE seems to exaggerate her smile whenever someone else looks at her, as if she is playing along. KAZ and OLIVER are bouncing like excited puppies).
KAZ
That was awesome!
OLIVER
I know! Did you see that thing go (He makes an incoherent explosion sound).
KAZ
(Laughing)
Yeah, and then that (He makes a different sound, exaggerating the explosion) and the-
CHASE
Okay, okay! We get it. We were all there.
SKYLAR
Yeah - and FYI guys, superheroes are supposed to be cool.
BREE
Really? What about Chase?
CHASE
(Dryly)
Ha-ha. Hilarious.
KAZ
Oh come on dude, you've got to admit, me and Oliver absolutely rocked that mission.
OLIVER
It's Oliver and I - (Grinning) But yeah, we did!
(OLIVER and KAZ begin an elaborate handshake, ending in a proud-of-themselves "superheroes").
SKYLAR
I will admit - and for the record, I don't want to, because of whatever that was - but you two are really getting the hang of your powers.
CHASE
Skylar's right - I'm really impressed. (Pauses, then adding) About the mission, not the handshake.
(CHASE puts the mission bag down on the couch, moving towards the kitchen to get an apple as he continues to talk).
CHASE
We're really coming together as a Force! We rescued the people from that ferris wheel in record time - Skylar, your superspeed was slick as ever, Oliver, Kaz, your flying was incredibly precise. I calculated the safezone for rescue with exact precision, and Bree… (He stops, pointing at BREE, trying to muster up a compliment but coming up with nothing) …What exactly did you do on that mission, again?
BREE
(Scoffs, offended, hesitating for a second and then speaking defensively)
Stuff… and things! Plenty of things! I was superspeeding, yeah, superspeeding really fast. So fast that you probably didn't even see me! (She scoffs again) Pssh, "what did I do on the mission". I'll tell you what I'm going to do right now is… (She stalls, unable to come up with a threat, so gestures to the stairs) Go… to the bathroom. Yeah. (She glares at CHASE with smug confidence) Take that. Yeah.
(BREE exits, stomping away up the stairs).
OLIVER
(Rolls his eyes)
Wow, girls are so… (He catches a black look from SKYLAR, who stares at him, narrowing her eyes and folding her arms. He tries to save himself) …unable to do anything wrong.
SKYLAR
That's what I thought.
(SKYLAR goes to the kitchen to get a drink. CHASE stands awkwardly for a second).
CHASE
Well… (Quickly) I'll be in the lab.
(CHASE runs away as fast as his legs can carry him towards the hyperlift, which takes him safely down away from conflict).
ROLL TITLES.
SCENE TWO
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(OLIVER is sitting on the couch, using a tablet. BREE walks down the stairs into the living room, both now in plain-clothes).
BREE
Hey Oliver, what's up?
OLIVER
Nothin' much, just going over these mission reports for Chase. He's got some big secret project he's working on, so I'm picking up the slack.
BREE
That's so nice of you.
(BREE picks up an apple and prepares to eat it).
OLIVER
It's no problem - I just have to review the footage from the ferris wheel rescue, then I'm done.
BREE
(Freezing, the apple half way to her mouth)
You what? (She snaps) Oliver, give me the tablet.
OLIVER
What? Why?
BREE
Give me the tablet!
(BREE runs towards OLIVER - without using her speed - and lunges for the tablet, trying to pull it away from him. There is clearly something she doesn't want OLIVER to see. But, before she can, footage appears on the tablet of the mission:
CHASE, SKYLAR, KAZ and OLIVER are running towards a sparking ferris wheel with people trapped on it. BREE was walking tentatively behind, but she watches the rest of the team go and she stops walking. Her eyes are wide and she looks around, and she slowly backs away. She turns and the footage shows her running away.
Focus back on OLIVER and BREE as they watch the footage. OLIVER is shocked, and BREE looks guilty).
OLIVER
(Awkwardly)
Ah… so, you… bolted. You ran to… get supplies?
BREE
(Guiltily)
I hid behind a car.
OLIVER
(Incredulous)
You hid behind a car?!
BREE
(Her voice hushed, embarrassed, starting to ramble)
I freaked out, okay! We got there, and my heart started beating really fast - you know, the way it does when a cute guy walks in at the gym - but then I just couldn't move any further towards the danger and I… I kept thinking about the warehouse, and Roman and Riker, and Rodissius controlling me, and me fighting you, and telling you all to leave, and I… I just couldn't! (She pauses, desperate) Oliver, you have to promise not to say anything to the others! They'll never trust me again if they find out!
(OLIVER puts the tablet down).
OLIVER
Bree, it's not a big deal. We all psych ourselves out from time to time. I have, Skylar has, it happens!
BREE
Not to me, it doesn't! I'm a genetically engineered superhuman, I'm built to withstand extreme climates, collapsing buildings, I survived living in a basement for sixteen years! You're a stick with legs, we're not the same.
OLIVER
(Offended)
Wow, is one of your abilities also being Super Mean?
(BREE sighs).
BREE
Sorry, I insult people when I'm nervous.
OLIVER
Look, Bree, you're scared. I get it. It happens, but you'll push through.
BREE
I'm not scared. I don't get scared.
(The toaster pops from the kitchen. BREE yells and fires her proton ring at it on instinct, leaving the toaster, and the toast it made, to melt to nothing on the counter top. BREE stands, embarrassed. OLIVER raises an eyebrow).
BREE
(Hopefully)
Would you believe me if I said I sneezed?
SCENE THREE.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(CHASE is hunched over the cyberdesk, also now in plain-clothes. He is working on something, in deep concentration, writing a code on a laptop and hunched over various discarded tools for a mysterious prototype. He taps something on the cyberdesk. Just then, the hyperlift whooshes and KAZ, plain-clothes, walks in. CHASE does not look up from his project).
KAZ
Hey, bud. (CHASE doesn't look up) Chase. (No response. KAZ cracks his knuckles). Well, I'm nothing if not an irritating distraction.
(KAZ walks over to CHASE, to peer over his computer. When he speaks again, CHASE is alerted to his presence and jumps).
KAZ
Whatcha workin' on?
(CHASE yells in surprise and slams his laptop shut).
CHASE
Nothing!
KAZ
(Intrigued)
Ooh, a secret. Come on, tell Kaz. Gimme, gimme, gimme.
CHASE
No.
KAZ
(Rolls his eyes)
Bor-ing.
CHASE
Your school-ground taunts won't work. Now if you don't mind, I really would like some peace and quiet to finish this.
(The hyperlift opens again, and this time, SKYLAR enters. CHASE rolls his eyes at the irony).
SKYLAR
Hey guys, what's goin' on?
KAZ
Chase has some secret project and won't tell me what it is.
SKYLAR
(The same way as KAZ).
Ooh, a secret. Come on, tell Skylar. Gimme, gimme, gimme.
(KAZ moves over to try and touch his laptop. CHASE slaps his hand away).
CHASE
Look, all you two need to know is that this is going to help us on missions. Now please leave me alone so I can have some peace -
(The hyperlift opens again, and in walks DOUGLAS and PERRY. DOUGLAS' eye is healed).
PERRY
- Come on, Dougie!
DOUGLAS
For the last time, Perry, I'm not spending Christmas with your Mom.
CHASE
(Deadpan)
- and quiet. Great. Just great.
DOUGLAS
Will one of you hide me from this insufferable woman?
PERRY
It's not much of a hiding place if you talk about it in front of me.
DOUGLAS
I'm fairly confident I could outrun you.
PERRY
Tell that to my 500 metre sprint gold medal from the 1976 olympic games. (Threatening) I brought Bulgaria to victory, buddy… I was their track star.
CHASE
Out. Out. Out! All of you, out!
PERRY
What's got your panties in a bunch, robo-boy?
CHASE
One - I'm not a robot, and two - that's none of your business.
SKYLAR & KAZ
He's got some secret project -~
CHASE
(Aghast)
Do you have no loyalties?
KAZ
Yeah, but then we wouldn't get to see you freak out and where's the fun in that?
CHASE
(Resigned)
Okay, you know what, I don't care. Be down here. But don't bother me whilst I'm trying to work.
(CHASE walks over to his cyberdesk, and begins tapping away at his computer again).
DOUGLAS
(To KAZ)
You know, if you try hard enough, we could probably get him to explode.
SKYLAR
(Laughing)
You wouldn't need to try at all.
SCENE FOUR.
EXT. TERRACE - DAY.
(BREE and OLIVER are on the terrace. OLIVER is holding a smoothie. He has rigged a large 'Whack-A-Mole' game in front of them. (The fuse box sits attached to the wall behind them). BREE looks sceptical, shuffling from foot to foot with her arms drawn in. She looks around nervously).
BREE
Really? Whack-A-Mole?
OLIVER
Hey, do not knock the power of an old arcade game. I held the high score for this back in the day… you know, before video games and comic books became my oxygen and engulfed my every waking moment. (Pause, he contemplates his life). Anyway, see if you can beat this with your powers. Use whatever you like - kicks, punches, proton ring, and concentrate on winning the fight.
BREE
Do we have to do it out here? Roman and Riker know this place - they could appear at any moment. What if they control me again?
OLIVER
They won't. And it's a beautiful day - we'd see them coming. The whole point of this is to get you out of your comfort zone. And right now, the terrace and an arcade game is out of your comfort zone. Just try not to jump-scare yourself when that little mole pops up - (Sighs knowingly) I have been there, trust me.
BREE
(Arms crossed, smugly)
I was taking down virtual simulators of black belt villains with my brothers when I was six years old. This is a little childish, don't you think? What makes you think I would jump at a-
(A bird flies past the terrace, its flapping wings making BREE scream and duck).
BREE
(Groaning)
Okay, okay, I see your point. I'm not exactly putting the "super" in superhero right now, am I?
OLIVER
You're not really putting the "hero" part in either - you ran away from a fairground ride.
BREE
(Glaring)
Just shut up and drink your smoothie. (OLIVER does so). Okay… (She hardens her expression) Eat it, moles.
(The Whack-A-Mole game begins, and BREE starts well. She kicks down one of the moles, smiling relieved at OLIVER that she did it, who gives her a thumbs up. But as she makes more and more hits, it quickly gets too much. Two moles pop up at once and she hesitates, not sure which one to hit).
OLIVER
Come on, Bree.
BREE
I…
(The moles pop up more and BREE catches her breath).
BREE
(Beginning to panic a little)
Do I use a proton ring or an energy blast?
OLIVER
Either! Just hit it!
BREE
I don't… (She lifts an arm to punch, then changes her mind and raises her leg to kick. Then she shakes her head and steps back, getting frustrated). This is stupid!
(BREE makes to storm off, but she doesn't see the wire to the arcade game strewn in her path).
OLIVER
Wait, Bree, watch the wire!
BREE
Huh?
(BREE turns around, scuffing and tugging at the wire with her boot as she does. OLIVER is stood over the wire a little further down, and BREE's movement tugs the wire into a tripwire, sending OLIVER backwards).
BREE
Oliver!
(BREE leaps forwards to catch him - without using her powers - and accidentally pushes him. He stumbles, spilling his smoothie all over the fuse box behind him, and falls. The fuse box sparks as BREE helps him up).
BREE
Uh-oh…
OLIVER
I'm sure it's fine. It can't be that important, right?
CUT TO:
SCENE FIVE.
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(All the lights in the penthouse go out).
(A wide shot shows that the whole building's power goes dark).
CUT TO:
SCENE SIX.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(CHASE is working at his console, KAZ and SKYLAR watching him, and PERRY and DOUGLAS standing in another corner, when the room completely blacks out).
CHASE
What the-
SCENE SEVEN.
EXT. TERRACE - DAY.
(BREE and OLIVER are staring awkwardly and guiltily at the fuse box, and then through the window to the living room).
OLIVER
So yeah... that might have been important.
(BREE nods).
MIDWAY BREAK.
SCENE EIGHT.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(An alarm is blaring, the room in darkness. PERRY stands baffled, DOUGLAS and CHASE are trying to get something - anything - to work on the consoles, and SKYLAR is trying to make the hyperlift work. KAZ is using his flame hands for torches, standing in the middle of the room. There is an overall sense of panic).
CHASE
Douglas, I thought you said you put a new security system around the penthouse!
DOUGLAS
I did!
SKYLAR
The hyperlift isn't working guys - we're stuck down here.
PERRY
What's going on?
CHASE
We must have been hacked again! It's Roman, Riker and Reece. (He runs a hand through his hair, staring at his invention, which is half-finished) This can't be happening again. Not yet!
DOUGLAS
Hang on! It might not be them. It might be a trip in the whole building's electricity. See if you can get Oliver and Bree on the PA system. (To KAZ) Hey, fire boy, can you bring your torch fingers over here?
KAZ
I really envisioned more punchy-flippy, and less matchy-torchy when I got my powers but whatever.
(KAZ walks over to DOUGLAS and CHASE. DOUGLAS flicks something on the wall and manages to crackle it into life, pulling a PA microphone from its coil tether to the wall).
DOUGLAS
It's a radio signal, not electric, so it should still work.
CHASE
(Speaking into a radio mic)
Guys. Guys! Are you there?
CUT TO:
INT. THE LIVING ROOM - DAY
(The power is out but there is enough natural light for OLIVER and BREE, who are standing by their side of the comms, looking guilty, pushing each other into talking).
OLIVER
(Smoothly)
No.
(BREE hits his arm).
BREE
Yes! Yeah, Chase, we're up here.
CHASE (V/O)
(His voice coming through BREE and OLIVER's comms)
Are we under attack?
BREE
No! No, it's just a… (She struggles for an excuse) A bird! A bird, yeah. A bird flew into the fuse box and knocked out the power.
OLIVER
Yeah, and then they dropped a smoothie on it - so… nothing suspicious to see when you come up.
(BREE hits OLIVER's arm again).
CUT TO:
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(DOUGLAS speaks into the comms).
DOUGLAS
There's a generator across the street from the building, can you go and switch it on?
CUT TO:
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(BREE and OLIVER, as before. BREE looks concerned, OLIVER looks relieved).
BREE
(Nervous)
Across the street? Across the street as in, outside? Outside meaning not inside our safely secure penthouse?
CUT TO:
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(DOUGLAS speaks into the comms).
DOUGLAS
What other outside is there? Geez, I know you're not the smart one, but I thought I put some intelligence in you and Adam.
CHASE
Give me that.
(CHASE snatches the comm-set from DOUGLAS and speaks into it).
BREE (V/O)
(Her voice through the comm-set)
Can't you just come up and switch it on yourself?
CHASE
The hyperlift won't work without power. We're stuck.
SKYLAR
And please God, Perry is down here, so hurry.
CUT TO:
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(BREE and OLIVER, as before; OLIVER, hearing SKYLAR's voice, puts his hand to his heart, taking the comm from BREE).
OLIVER
(Heroically)
I will rescue you, Skylar my love! If it's the last thing I do!
SKYLAR (V/O)
(Her voice through the comms)
Don't need rescuing - it's flicking one switch. A toddler could do it, but okay.
(BREE takes the comm back and puts it down, switching it off. She paces as OLIVER heads towards the door).
BREE
Well, go on then.
OLIVER
You're not coming?
BREE
(Scoffs)
And stop you from being Skylar's hero? I would never.
OLIVER
(Narrowing his eyes, folding his arms)
Are you scared of going outside?
BREE
We've been over this, I don't get scared. (Hesitates, trying to find an excuse and awkwardly finding one) It's strategy. To not die. (Realises she is getting nowhere) Oh, just go!
(OLIVER exits out the front door, leaving BREE to pace and watch afraid out the window).
SCENE NINE.
EXT. STREET OUTSIDE THE PENTHOUSE - DAY.
(A large generator sits behind a wire cage. OLIVER, hurrying round a corner just outside the building, sees it, smiles, and walks forwards).
OLIVER
Right… just got to switch it on. Switch it on. That can't be that hard, it's just one switch, right?
(OLIVER opens a panel to reveal about fifty identical switches).
OLIVER
Or… fifty. Damn you, Davenport.
(A screen lights up to OLIVER's left, showing a video of DONALD DAVENPORT, staring at the camera. OLIVER jumps).
OLIVER
Sorry! Jeez.
DAVENPORT
If you're watching this, the power in my Davenbuilding has gone out, but never fear, for the Davengenerator is one of my easiest pieces of technology to use. (Pause) Kaz, if you're watching this, go get Chase!
OLIVER
You really do just slap your name on everything, don't you?
DAVENPORT
To switch on the generator, it's easy. Just flick the switch that's third from the left on the top row -
OLIVER
Well, that was easy!
(OLIVER does it).
DAVENPORT
(Continuing)
- Which for security purposes, will release high-tech deadly lasers unless met with the answer to my security question in thirty seconds.
OLIVER
(Losing his mind)
Security what?!
DAVENPORT
Assuming Bree and Chase are watching this, it's the same answer to all my security questions, just put your middle names in and it'll switch on. (Pause) If you're not Bree and Chase, well, forget I said that.
OLIVER
Well that explains why Davenport industries gets hacked all the time!
ROBOTIC COUNTDOWN
Thirty - twenty nine - twenty eight - twenty seven -
OLIVER
Middle names? What are Bree and Chase's middle names?
ROBOTIC COUNTDOWN
Twenty three - twenty two - twenty one -
OLIVER
(To the countdown)
Okay! I get it! You don't like helping!
(OLIVER pulls out his phone and calls BREE).
CUT TO.
INT. PENTHOUSE LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(BREE is pacing. Her phone rings, she answers it. For each line, it cuts between BREE and OLIVER).
BREE
What's up?
OLIVER
(Insanely stressed)
Your security illiterate father is about to kill me with lasers is what's up! What's your middle name?
BREE
Alberta, why?
OLIVER
(Teasingly)
Alberta?
BREE
I have two scientist Dads! One of us was going to be named after Albert Einstein!
(OLIVER stares panicked at the screen).
ROBOTIC COUNTDOWN
Ten - nine - eight -
OLIVER
Okay, okay, what's Chase's?
BREE
Newton. What's going on?
OLIVER
(Concentrating on the generator)
Alberta and Newton… why isn't it stopping?
ROBOTIC COUNTDOWN
Four - three - two -
(OLIVER screams and jumps out the way, landing flat on his back. Lasers begin to fire out at OLIVER, so close that he cannot stand up without hitting a laser, trapped on the ground. In the process of jumping, his phone skids away from him, landing too far away from him).
BREE (V/O)
(Through the phone)
Oliver! Oliver!
SCENE TEN.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY
(CHASE paces, as PERRY, DOUGLAS, and SKYLAR try to figure out a way out of mission command and KAZ, losing his patience, still stands as the torch).
CHASE
How long does it take to flick on a generator?
DOUGLAS
To be fair, Donnie did just input a security video. He could just be talking, and talking, and talking… you know how he is.
SKYLAR
Are you sure there's no way for the hyperlift to work like this?
CHASE
Not without power. (He thinks) You know what, I'm just going to keep myself busy. (He goes over to his work station) Kaz, a little help?
KAZ
(Flattered)
Ooh, are you finally going to tell me your secret?
CHASE
No, I need your torch hands to see.
KAZ
(Grumbling)
Coming…
(KAZ goes over to stand next to CHASE, using his hands as a torch, and CHASE begins to quietly work).
SKYLAR
I can't believe that we're all stuck down here and you're just going to keep working without telling us!
CHASE
Really? You can't believe it? I think it's fairly in character for me, Skylar.
(DOUGLAS walks over to CHASE, a proud hand on his shoulder. CHASE looks up at DOUGLAS, sceptical).
DOUGLAS
Yeah Skylar, inventions are precious to their scientists. You wouldn't understand, but when Chase and I work tirelessly on this innovative piece of technology, then -
CHASE
I'm not telling you either, Douglas.
DOUGLAS
(Whiney)
What? (He clears his throat, guilt tripping) But Chase, I'm your Dad!
(CHASE folds his arms).
CHASE
Name one of my allergies.
DOUGLAS
(Thinks, then decides to guess, gauging CHASE's face for reaction every guess)
Cat-apple-mushr-radis-milk?…. Okay, you're right, I don't know.
CHASE
Shoo.
(CHASE pushes DOUGLAS back).
PERRY
He's probably not telling us because he's putting together a robot army to take over the world!
CHASE
I'm not telling you because you'll destroy it with one touch.
SKYLAR
Oh, come on, Chase! Just-
CHASE
No! It's not ready yet, and you're just all going to have to respect that.
KAZ
Forget it, Skylar, the smartest man in the world just doesn't trust anyone with an IQ lower than 10.
CHASE
(Narrows his eyes)
You know that 10 is not a high IQ, right?
KAZ
My point exactly!
SKYLAR
Look, we get it Chase, you just don't trust your team.
CHASE
Of course I trust my team! It's not- (He pauses, stalls) Look, it's not my secret. I really, really can't say anything yet, alright? Just… back off. Please.
(KAZ, accepting, starts to step back).
CHASE
Kaz, not you - torch hands.
(KAZ scoffs, but moves his hands so CHASE can see).
SCENE ELEVEN.
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(BREE is yelling into the phone, stressed, her conversation with OLIVER having come to an abrupt end with the sound of an explosion of some kind).
BREE
Oliver! Oliver! (The phone call disconnects; she tosses the phone onto the couch in frustration). Darn it! (She sighs) What do I do? What do I do? Think, Bree! (She thinks, tempting herself to run away) No! No, you can't run and hide this time. You're a superhero! Act like it!
(BREE stares at the front door to the penthouse, taking hesitant steps towards it. She reaches the door and it slides open. She looks back, torn).
BREE
What if something goes wrong? (She pauses, thinks) Well, to be fair, things have already gone wrong so… (She pauses, then runs forwards out the penthouse) Screw it!
SCENE TWELVE.
EXT. STREET OUTSIDE PENTHOUSE - DAY.
(OLIVER is flat on the floor, trapped and avoiding the lasers, unable to move lest he get hit. BREE runs into view, eyes widening at the sight).
BREE
Oliver!
OLIVER
(From the floor)
Bree! You're outside!
BREE
I know! Look at me go!
OLIVER
Yeah! That's amazing! (Snaps, stressed) Now can you get me out of here!
BREE
Right…
(BREE steps forwards in attempt to take in the situation, but a laser fires directly at her. Without thinking she jumps, doing a cartwheel flip to dodge it. She lands on her feet).
BREE
Hang on!
(BREE flips forwards, using her superspeed and her superagility to expertly dodge the lasers to get close enough to the generator).
OLIVER
(Lifts his head up)
The recording said it needed your middle names as a security code! I said Alberta and Newton but it didn't - (A laser fires too close to his head and he screams, ducking).
BREE
(Rolls her eyes, realising, distracting herself from the immediate danger)
Oh! Not mine and Chase's, Oliver. All of us! Chase and I have two other brothers and a sister, remember! Davenport goes to all these lengths to have us convinced he loves us all equally - but we all really know Chase is his favourite.
OLIVER
(Panicked, yelling)
That's great! You want to do something about that then?!
BREE
Oh, yeah! (BREE turns back to the generator, flicks some switches and dodges another laser). Charles-Alberta-Netwon-Francis-Rose!
(BREE does a final backflip to dodge a final laser, landing in a triumphant one-knee pose, her hand out to steady herself as the generator whirls into life. There is quiet as BREE realises she did it. She stands up, a grin on her face, and pulls OLIVER to his feet).
BREE
The power's on! I did it!
OLIVER
Yes!
CUT TO:
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY
(The lights flicker on, PERRY, DOUGLAS, SKYLAR, KAZ and CHASE look relieved. KAZ puts out his torch hands).
CHASE
Finally!
CUT TO:
EXT. STREET OUTSIDE PENTHOUSE - DAY.
(The scene as it was. OLIVER and BREE hug in the happiness of the moment).
OLIVER
(Once they pull apart)
You think we could tell Skylar it was me?
BREE
Come on, superhero.
(BREE and OLIVER head back inside, smiles on their faces, BREE especially looking proud of herself).
SCENE THIRTEEN.
INT. PENTHOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY.
(BREE and OLIVER stand by the hyperlift as KAZ, SKYLAR, CHASE, PERRY and DOUGLAS zip up the hyperlift and make their way out into the living room. BREE looks troubled).BREE
Sorry it took so long!
OLIVER
Is everyone alright?
PERRY
About time! What did you do, catch a movie?
SKYLAR
I'm sure what she means to say, is thank you.
PERRY
Nope!
(PERRY exits away up the stairs. SKYLAR hugs OLIVER).
SKYLAR
Well, I'll say it then. Thank you.
OLIVER
(In heaven, holding SKYLAR)
I might go turn the power off again right now.
KAZ
No! No. Absolutely not! I am done being everyone's personal lamp!
DOUGLAS
Okay, I'm going to go fix the fuse box on the terrace. Now we've got the generator up and running, it shouldn't take too long.
(DOUGLAS steps forwards towards the terrace, then realises CHASE isn't following him).
DOUGLAS
You coming, Chase?
CHASE
In a sec, Douglas.
(DOUGLAS leaves, and as KAZ, OLIVER and SKYLAR make their way, chatting, to the couch, BREE steps forwards to join them. She still has a troubled look on her face. CHASE, before BREE can get further towards the couch, grabs her arm loosely. He gestures his head towards the hyperlift).
CHASE
(Quietly)
Come with me. I want to show you something.
(BREE is confused, but obliges, making her way to the hyperlift with CHASE).
SCENE FOURTEEN.
INT. MISSION COMMAND - DAY.
(CHASE and BREE step out of the hyperlift. CHASE paces purposely forwards towards the desk he has been working on all day. The tools are now stored away, his laptop sitting open atop the cyberdesk. BREE lingers slightly behind, making her way over slowly, trying to seem nonchalant).
BREE
So what did you want to show me? We've been over this, Chase, I don't care about your nerd toys.
CHASE
(Smugly)
I think you'll like this one.
(CHASE taps something on the cyberdesk, clicking a final button. When he pulls his hands away, the cyberdesk shows two side-by-side codes of schematics. The one on the left, in green, is labelled "CHASE" in big letters at the top, and the one on the right, in pink, is labelled "BREE").
BREE
(Confused)
Our chip codes?
(CHASE turns to BREE, his expression serious).
CHASE
Look, I know you weren't at the ferris wheel mission this morning.
BREE
(Panicked)
What? But I - no, you're -
CHASE
Save it Bree, seriously, it's okay. I understand. After Giselle kidnapped me on the island, I lost my mojo for a bit too.
BREE
So, what? You brought me down here to lecture me?
CHASE
No! No, look.
(He taps the cyberdesk again, and a large pop-up button appears, covering both BREE and CHASE's chip schematics on the desk. It says "ACTIVATE REMOTE COMMUNICATION SIGNAL").
BREE
(Her curiosity piqued)
What's that?
CHASE
I've been working on something. I wanted to keep it a secret until I knew it would work because, well, it's never been done before and, I honestly didn't know if even I could do it. But... (he clears his throat) I've coded an upgrade into our chips.
BREE
(Sceptical)
Okay…
CHASE
(Pointing to the pop-up on the cyberdesk)
Once you press this button, our chips will be able to send signals to each other. I picked three random words for an activation phrase - pineapple, barnyard, kangaroo - and all you have to do is think "pineapple, barnyard, kangaroo" three times over and then that opens a transmission, kind of like a phone call, but for your thoughts. Whatever you then think is transmitted into my chip and I would hear you. Then I'll be able to think back in response and we can communicate in emergencies.
BREE
You… invented telepathy?
CHASE
(Correcting)
Mmm… remote communication signals, but okay. If you want to call it that, I suppose it is a kind of telepathy. But the point is, Bree… (He sighs, turning fully to her, his voice lowering) I know you've been freaked out ever since Rodissius took control of you. But, think of this as a failsafe. If anything like this should ever happen again, or if either one of us are separated, for example, I don't know, (Pointedly) by running off to Caldera without saying anything and getting kidnapped… (BREE chuckles), all you need to do, wherever you are in the universe, is think the three code words: "pineapple, barnyard, kangaroo". No matter what your body is doing, or what you're saying out loud, even if you're being programmed to fight me and you don't have any control, it won't matter. You can just talk to me through our chips, and I'll come get you.
(A pause. CHASE smiles at his sister, but BREE just stares at CHASE, speechless, touched. CHASE, seeing her silence, continues to ramble).
CHASE
(Awkwardly)
I know it's not a complete fix, I just thought, you know, it might help you feel safe, to get your confidence back. You don't have to use it. I mean, I haven't even rigged it to go yet. I thought I'd let you push the button just in case you hated it
(Another pause; BREE's gaze softens as she stares at CHASE).
CHASE
And, you know, I can see you do hate it. So, never mind. Just forget I said anything. I didn't mean to make things worse, it doesn't matter, I can just delete the research-
(Wordlessly, BREE launches forwards. She hugs CHASE so tightly and with such ferocity that he stumbles back a step. CHASE, surprised, is stiff for a second, but then processes the moment and lowers his arms to hug her back. He gives her a squeeze, feeling her raw emotion, and they stay there for a second).
BREE
(Quietly, tearfully)
Thank you.
CHASE
Of course… (He shrugs) it's not a big deal, really, it's just an excuse for me to invent more nerd toys, so…
(BREE pulls back, wiping her eyes).
BREE
Chase… I'm speechless. Thank you.
CHASE
Well, being speechless doesn't matter if this thing works. You want to test it?
BREE
(With sudden energy)
Heck yeah I want to test it! Buttons, buttons, what can I push and where can I push it?
CHASE
(Chuckling at her)
There.
(CHASE points to the pop-up on the cyberdesk, and BREE looks at him, apprehensively, and he gives her a supportive nod back. BREE presses the button. Their codes disappear and the normal look of the cyberdesk returns. CHASE and BREE feel a simultaneous shock in the back of their necks. They both make a slight grimace and bring their hands up to where their chips sit. CHASE and BREE look at each other, BREE smiling, and CHASE paces away to the other side of the room).
CHASE
Okay, so just think what I told you. The code is "pineapple, barnyard, kangaroo". Think it three times over, and we should be-
BREE (V/O)
(Telepathically to CHASE)
I heard you the first time, dork.
(CHASE reacts to the invention working, turning to face BREE, amazement and shock on his face, having heard her loud and clear. They stare at each other, astounded).
CHASE (V/O)
(Also telepathically)
I hear you! Can you hear me?
BREE (V/O)
Why do you look so surprised?
CHASE (V/O)
I honestly thought you were going to explode.
BREE
(Outloud, yelling)
Chase!
CHASE
Hey, it worked didn't it?
(A pause).
BREE
I can't believe it worked… I can't believe you invented telepathy for me! Having a genius brother has finally paid off!
(BREE hugs CHASE, overjoyed, who hugs her back).
BREE
(Rambling with her new relief)
Oh my god, I can breathe again! (Gasps) I'm going to go for a run! I haven't been on a run in forever… (She smiles) Chase, I can't tell you how much this means to me.
CHASE
(Shrugs)
Don't sweat it. I meant what I said, Bree, I'm always going to be here for you, and now we can reach each other wherever we are. (Turns to her, his tone lighter) And don't act so surprised I did something nice! Besides, someone's got to remind old "SpaceRock" Davenport over here where her powers really come from. I know I'm no Arcturion, but I figured we earned a new ability.
BREE
(Smiling)
You're way better than some dumb space rock.
CHASE
(Surprised at the compliment)
Yeah?
BREE
Oh, definitely.
(A moment passes, for less than a second, before BREE turns to him with an evil twinkle in her eye).
BREE (V/O)
Because I can't annoy the Arcturion with its own inventions, can I?
(CHASE's face falls).
CHASE (V/O)
Oh for the love of Einstein, what have I done?
(CHASE runs away, but BREE follows him).
BREE (V/O)
I can tell you everything now, Chasey, whatever's in my head, I can make you hear it! My grocery list… what shoes I'm going to wear…
CHASE
(Out loud)
This is for emergencies only!
BREE (V/O)
But my shoes are an emergency, Chase!
(BREE chases CHASE out of mission command and into the tunnels, both disappearing).
CHASE
No, no, no, no, no!
