Barney groaned as his senses returned in fits and starts, a dull ache spreading through his limbs. Blurred light filtered through his eyelids, and a faint hum filled the air—softer than the roar of an engine, but steady and alien in its precision. He forced his eyes open, blinking against the brightness of the room. It was clean and sterile, with sleek metallic walls and glowing blue panels that pulsed gently, casting a calming hue over the space. Definitely not the back of the SUV.
He struggled to sit up, only to feel his head swim. "Ugh... what the hell hit me?" he muttered, clutching his forehead.
"Ah, you're awake!"
The voice startled him, high-pitched yet melodic, with an almost bubbly enthusiasm. Barney froze, turning his head slowly toward the source.
Standing at the foot of his bed was... well, something he couldn't immediately process. The figure was humanoid, but her skin shimmered in shades of purple and black, with smooth, amphibian-like texture. Two round, horn-like blue appendages jutted from the back of her head, framing her flat nose and expressive yellow eyes. Her lithe form was accentuated by a sleek uniform that looked like a cross between a nurse's scrubs and tactical gear. Tribal tattoos in intricate patterns spiraled along her arms and neck, glowing faintly under the room's light.
Barney's mouth hung open. He blinked several times, as if waiting for his vision to correct itself. "Okay, still unconscious," he mumbled.
The figure stepped closer, clasping her hands together in excitement. "Oh, this is so incredible! You're awake, and I get to be the first Fungoid to meet a human! A real human! I mean, I studied about your kind, but I never imagined—"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold on," Barney interrupted, raising a hand. His voice was groggy, and his head still felt like it had been stuffed with cotton, but his instincts were kicking in. He pointed a finger at her, squinting. "What... are you?"
"Oh!" The woman flinched slightly, her enthusiasm faltering. She stood up straighter, clasping her hands behind her back. "My apologies! I—I let my excitement get the better of me. How unprofessional. My name is Sheila. I'm a medic here at Galactic Rangers' headquarters. I'm what you would call a Fungoid—a sentient amphibian species native to Planet Quantos." She bowed slightly, her blue horns twitching. "Welcome to Planet Kerwan."
Barney blinked, her words only half-registering. "Ker... what?"
"Planet Kerwan!" Sheila repeated cheerfully. "The home of the Galactic Rangers and one of the most bustling hubs in the Solana Galaxy!" She gestured around the room. "You're currently in the medical bay of our headquarters. You were unconscious when you arrived. It seems you and your, uh, companions had a bit of an accident with the central plaza's fountain."
"Fountain?" Barney mumbled. Flashes of the SUV crashing through the portal flooded back to him—the jarring impact, the fountain, the statue falling over. "Oh, yeah. That happened." He rubbed his face, still trying to process. Sheila tilted her head curiously. "You seem... remarkably calm for someone who just crossed dimensions."
Barney chuckled dryly. "Lady, I've been through an alien invasion, survived a collapsing lab full of monsters, and been chased by flying aliens that could shoot plasma bolts. At this point, waking up in a shiny hospital with a... uh..." He waved vaguely at her. "...Fungoid is just another day at the office."
Sheila's horns twitched again, and her wide mouth curled into what Barney assumed was a smile. "You're surprisingly adaptable for a human."
"Yeah, well," Barney muttered, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. He paused, waiting for the room to stop spinning. "I try to roll with it. Speaking of rolling—where's the rest of my crew? The Doc and the two assistants?"
"They're all fine," Sheila reassured him, raising a webbed hand. "Your injuries were minor, but your vitals were more stable than the others, so you woke up first. They're resting in separate rooms." Barney nodded, relief washing over him. He leaned back slightly, trying to gather his thoughts. "So… you're telling me I'm on another planet? Like, a whole different planet, not just the other side of the solar system?"
"Correct!" Sheila said with enthusiasm. "Your arrival was quite the event. Portals of your nature are highly unusual—even for this galaxy. The Galactic Rangers are already investigating."
Barney scratched the back of his head. "Figures. You get sucked into one weird portal, and suddenly you're the interdimensional mystery guest."
Sheila's smile softened. "I understand this must be overwhelming for you. If you'd like, I can contact Commander Sasha Phyronix. She'll want to speak with you once you're ready. She's very eager to learn more about your, uh, situation."
Barney frowned slightly. "Commander who?"
"Sasha Phyronix," Sheila repeated. "She's the acting leader of the Galactic Rangers and the mayor of Metropolis City here on Kerwan. She's quite interested in... unique situations like yours."
Barney rubbed his temples. "Great. More questions. Look, Sheila, right? Could you maybe get me some coffee or something? I feel like I'm gonna need it if I'm gonna explain everything to your boss."
Sheila chuckled, her yellow eyes crinkling with amusement. "I'll see what I can do. Just try not to be too hard on yourself, Mister… uh..." "Calhoun," Barney said with a sigh. "Barney Calhoun. And thanks, Sheila."
Sheila nodded, her blue horns twitching again as she stepped toward the door. "Rest for now, Barney. You'll need your strength. Welcome to the Solana Galaxy." As the door slid shut behind her, Barney leaned back on the bed, exhaling deeply. His eyes drifted to the glowing panels on the walls, the sleek, alien technology that filled the room. "Solana Galaxy," he muttered, shaking his head. "What the hell have I gotten myself into this time?
Not long later the door slid open again with a soft hiss. Sheila reappeared, her webbed hands carefully balancing a steaming mug of coffee on a tray. "Here we are," she said cheerfully, setting the cup on a small bedside table. "I had to scrounge this up from one of the engineers. Coffee isn't exactly standard in our medbay, but I read humans are quite fond of it."
Barney raised an eyebrow, glancing at the cup. It looked like coffee. Smelled like coffee. Tentatively, he picked it up and took a sip.
"Not bad," he said, his voice soft with surprise. "Almost like the real thing." Sheila smiled, folding her arms. "I'm glad it meets your standards. Commander Sasha Phyronix is on her way to see you. Until then, I thought we could talk—you probably have questions."
Barney leaned back against the headboard, the warmth of the coffee slowly waking him up. "You could say that. For starters, what's the deal with this place? You mentioned I'm on a planet called Kerwan, but it feels like I'm in some sci-fi theme park." Sheila laughed, her yellow eyes crinkling with amusement. "I suppose it could seem that way. Metropolis, the city you're in, is a melting pot of species from across the Solana Galaxy. It's home to Fungoids like me, as well as Vullards, Markazians, Cazars, and many others."
"Cazars?" Barney asked, taking another sip.
Sheila nodded. "Yes, Cazars. Commander Sasha is one herself. They're a feline-like species known for their sharp intellect and leadership skills. Sasha is a prime example of that—she's one of the most respected figures in the galaxy." Barney gave a low whistle, his curiosity growing. "Sounds like quite the crowd here."
Sheila beamed. "It is! We pride ourselves on diversity and cooperation. Though, I'll admit your arrival caused a bit of a stir. Appearing out of thin air like that? It's not exactly a common occurrence." Barney couldn't help but smirk. "Yeah, I get that. What about the rest of my crew? Rosenberg, Simmons, Walter—they doing okay?"
Sheila's expression softened. "They're fine. No major injuries, though they're still unconscious. We've kept them stable and comfortable, just like you." Barney nodded, relieved. "That's good. Last thing I need is for one of them to keel over before we figure out what's going on."
Sheila hesitated for a moment before continuing. "You did give the citizens quite the scare. Crashing into the fountain was dramatic enough, but when they saw four unfamiliar humans being pulled out of a strange vehicle, well... let's just say it was a memorable entrance."
Barney groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Figures. I'm making first contact, and I do it by wrecking the place." Sheila chuckled nervously. "It wasn't all bad. Though, Captain Qwark wasn't exactly thrilled when he found out his statue was destroyed."
Barney looked up, eyebrows raised. "Captain who?"
"Captain Qwark," Sheila said. "He's a celebrated hero around here—helped save the galaxy several times, albeit with... some help from Ratchet and Clank." Barney grinned. "Sounds like he's got a bit of an ego." Sheila laughed, her horns twitching. "You could say that. He's... unique. But despite his quirks, he really has helped protect the galaxy. Well, mostly."
"Mostly?" Barney teased. "You're not exactly selling me on the guy, Sheila." Her laughter grew louder, and she waved a webbed hand. "I suppose he's an acquired taste."Barney leaned back, the coffee now fully kicking in. "Alright, you've also mentioned this Ratchet and Clank. Who are they? Another pair of heroes?"
Before Sheila could answer, the door hissed open again, and two towering Ranger bots entered, their bulky frames gleaming under the medbay lights. Each carried a rifle-like weapon, their red visors scanning the room. Behind them strode a tall, imposing figure."Commander Sasha Phyronix," Sheila said, stepping aside and bowing slightly.
Barney sat up straighter, instantly wary of the feline-like woman now standing before him. Sasha's golden fur gleamed, and her piercing blue eyes locked onto him with an intensity that reminded him of a drill sergeant. Her uniform was crisp and authoritative, the emblem of the Galactic Rangers prominent on her chest.
"Mr. Calhoun," Sasha said, her voice firm yet measured. "I trust you're feeling well enough to talk?" Barney set his cup down and swung his legs over the side of the bed, standing a bit unsteadily. "Yeah, I'm good. Well, as good as I can be after crashing into an alien fountain."
Sasha's lips twitched into a faint smirk before her demeanour hardened again. "Good. Then you'll come with me. We have questions, and I'm sure you have answers." Barney raised an eyebrow. "What, no pleasantries? Not even a 'welcome to Kerwan'?"
Sasha crossed her arms. "Consider this your welcome. Now, if you'll follow me." Barney sighed, glancing back at Sheila. "Thanks for the coffee, Sheila. Guess I'm off to meet the welcoming committee."
Sheila gave him a sympathetic smile. "Good luck, Barney." Barney muttered under his breath as he followed Sasha and the Ranger bots out of the room. "Great. First contact, and I'm already getting interrogated. Just another day in the life."
