Chapter 12
Jack rode in a longboat with his wife, daughter, Elizabeth, and James with Pintel and Ragetti pulling the oars trying to stay in sync with one another.
Morgan looked out to the island as the wave lapped up at the side of the boat as they got closer to land. She tried her best to keep her eyes away from James who wasn't sitting to far from her. She chewed the inside of her cheek knowing that this was rather dangerous.
"You're pulling too fast." Pintel complained.
"You're pulling too slow. We don't want the Kraken to catch us."
Jack winced at the mention of the creature.
"I'm saving me strength for when it comes. And I don't think it's "kracken," anyways. I always heard it said "kray-ken"."
"What, with a long "A"? "Krock-en"'s how it is in the original Scandinavian, and "Krack-en's" closer to that."
"Well, we ain't original Scandanavians, are we? Kray-ken."
"It's a mythical creature and I can calls it what I wants."
"If it's so mythical, then why are you pulling so fast?"
Bonnie reached over taking her husband's hand in hers giving it a squeeze knowing that he was worried of the Kraken coming to get him. She was even worried to know that it was out there after her husband and knew that there were very few ways of doing things.
"Oi would you two shut it!" Morgan snapped looking at the two of them.
"Sorry." The two of them piped up knowing that it was a bad idea to get on the bad side of Morgan with her temper. Which wasn't good at that moment.
James looked over at her out of the corner of his eyes. He had to admit that it was nice to see that spark that he saw over a year ago. She hadn't lost that and it was a good thing that she hadn't.
They arrived on the beach.
Jack sat his jar down into the boat before stripping off his jacket and grabbing a shovel. He looked to Pintel and Ragetti. "Guard the boat. Mind the tide."
Morgan and Bonnie got off of the boat sheading their jackets off before following Jack.
"And you were wrong about to-mah-to, if I recall." Ragetti complained.
"I like tomatoes."
Jack handed Elizabeth the compass.
Elizabeth slowly opened it.
Jack peaked at the heading before walking.
Morgan followed her father with her mother not too much behind her.
Elizabeth and James followed behind the three Sparrows.
James spotted the abandoned Church. "I didn't expect anyone to be here."
"There's not." Morgan called out as they kept walking.
James' brows furrowed together as he looked at the woman's form before him. "You know this place?"
"Stories. Isla Cruces. The Church came to the island, and brought salvation ... and disease, and death. They say the priest had to bury every single body, one after the other. It drove him mad, and he hung himself."
"Better mad with the rest of the world than sane alone."
Morgan looked over her shoulder her brows furrowing slightly. He was more cynical now than what she knew of him. Perhaps this was always what was bubbling under the seams of the Commodore.
"No fraternizing with the help, Morgan," Jack called out to his daughter.
Morgan let out a groan shaking her head. "I wasn't fraternizing in the way that you think." Morgan said defending herself.
"Oh come on, Jackie. She's only talking to him." Bonnie said looking at her husband as she caught up to him. She didn't see the problem of Morgan and James talking. She thought that it was nice that the two of them were talking and she had a feeling her daughter had more feelings than what she was letting on.
"Oh, after you sir."
Jack handed the shovel to James.
James brought up the rear of the group as the five of them walked.
Jack waited impatiently as Elizabeth passed him following the compass.
Suddenly the needle swung around in the opposite direction. She turned and faced Jack. The needle swung away and she turned again. Frustrated she sat down tossing the compass away. "It doesn't work! It doesn't show you what you want most."
"Jackie."
Jack nodded his head looking at the compass without touching it. "Yes it does. You're sitting on it."
"Beg pardon?"
"Move." Jack said shoving Elizabeth aside before making an x in the sand. He looked at James expectantly.
Morgan rolled her eyes moving forward to start digging.
James let out a breath and followed the look and began to dig. He kept his mouth quiet as he worked.
Morgan continued to dig with James when her shovel hit something with a loud knok.
Jack and James lifted the chest out of the hole.
Jack used his shove to break the lock. He sunk to his knees lifting the lid of the chest.
Bonnie bit her lip as she watched Jack dig through the items in the chest. There was a white dress, a conch shell, dried flowers, a strand of pearls, lace, love letters.
He lifted out a less than two foot long, a little more than a foot high bound solidly in iron.
The five of them went silent listening to the box to make noise.
A thump of a heart beat was heard.
"It's real." Elizabeth said in shock.
"You actually were telling the truth." James said looking over at Jack his brows raised slightly thinking that this was still rather insane to begin with.
"I do that a lot, and yet people are still surprised." Jack muttered shaking his head.
"With good reason." Will's voice rang out causing Elizabeth to look over. He was dripping wet from the sea.
Elizabeth raced towards him. "Will - you're all right! Thank God. I came looking for you -"
"I'm fine, I'm fine, I know. I like your hair."
Jack looked back at the sea looking worried. "How did you get here?"
"Sea turtles, mate. A pair of them, strapped to my feet."
"Not so easy, is it?"
"But I do owe you thanks, Jack."
"You do?"
"After you tricked me onto that ship - to square your debt to Jones -"
"What?" Elizabeth asked in concern. Jack hadn't told her that.
"What?" Jack said trying to pretend to be shocked of the whole thing.
"I was reunited with my father."
Bonnie's eyes went wide. "Bootstrap is still alive?"
Will nodded his head.
"You're welcome." Jack said with a smile.
"Everything you said to me ... every word was a lie." Elizabeth said clutching her hands at her sides.
Bonnie let out a breath shaking her head.
"Yes. Time and tide, love - what are you doing?"
Will kneeled down next to the chest with a key in hand his father's knife in his other hand. "I'm going to kill Jones."
Jack drew his sword pointing it at Will's throat. "I can't let you do that, William. If Jones is dead, then who's to call his beastie off the hunt? Now, if you please - the key."
Will slapped Jack's sword away before jumping back and pulling Elizabeth's sword out pointing it at Jack. "I keep the promises I make. I intend to free my father. I hope you're here to see it."
Morgan let out a groan as she heard another sword being drawn. She turned her head to see it was James drawing his sword as well. "Bloody hell." She said with a groan.
"I can't let you do that, either. Sorry." James said gripping his sword in his hand tightly.
"I knew you'd warm up to me eventually."
James moved his sword to Jack. "Lord Beckett desires the contents of that chest. I deliver it. I get my life back."
"Ah. The dark side of ambition."
"I prefer to think of it as the promise of redemption."
The three men squared off against each other. Before leaping forward at the same time swords clashing.
"Will, we can't let him get the chest. You can trust me on this … You can mistrust me less than you can mistrust him."
Will took a good look at James for the first time. "You look awful."
"Granted. But you're still naive. He just wants Elizabeth for himself."
"Pot. Kettle. Black."
Bonnie let out a breath shaking her head.
Will was able to jump back for just a moment to look at his fiancee. "Guard the chest."
Elizabeth glared at him. "No. This is barbaric. This is not how grown men settle their - oh,
fine! Let's just all haul out our swords and start banging away at each other! Have at it! That will
solve everything. Well I've had it with the lot of you! I've had enough of ... rum soaked ... wobbly-legged ... pirates!"
"Well that didn't help much did it." Morgan looked at her mother. "Should we really guard the chest or just get out of here with it. Let those three hash out their problems?"
Bonnie let out a breath. "As much as I want to see them fight their problems out we really are pressed for time."
"I swear! This is madness! This is -" She swooned pretending to faint laying still for a moment.
Morgan shook her head before turning her head to see Pintel and Ragetti legging it for the jungle with the chest. "Damn it why do we always bring those klauds?"
Bonnie let out a breath as she turned. "Sometimes I wonder." She said before chasing after the two men.
Morgan quickly followed her mother with Elizabeth getting to her feet following.
