The morning sun illuminated the academy grounds as Ash, Arven, and Nemona returned to their routine, attending various classes. Ash couldn't help but worry about Koraidon, whom he had left in his dorm room with Pikachu to keep it entertained. He hoped the Legendary Pokémon wouldn't get into any trouble while he was away.
His mind wandered as he thought about Koraidon, picturing it trying to explore the dorm, possibly finding Pikachu's antics amusing—or worse, causing chaos.
"A-hem." Ash flinched, snapping out of his thoughts. His gaze shot upward to find the stern yet slightly bemused face of Raifort, the academy's history teacher. She stood at the front of the classroom with her arms crossed, her sharp gaze fixed on him. "Mr. Ketchum," she began, her tone laced with mild annoyance, "perhaps you could enlighten the class by answering the next question about Paldea's rich history?"
Ash chuckled nervously, scratching the back of his head. "Uh… sure, Professor Raifort!" he said, scrambling to look at the textbook in front of him, which was still on the wrong page. His eyes darted around, desperately trying to figure out what topic she was even talking about.
Behind him, Nemona stifled a giggle, her hand covering her mouth. She leaned forward and whispered, "Looks like someone wasn't paying attention~."
Ash gave her a sheepish glance over his shoulder before returning his focus to Raifort, who tapped her foot expectantly. "We're waiting, Mr. Ketchum," she said, arching an eyebrow.
Ash gulped, hoping he could piece together an answer before making himself look even more clueless.
...
Later that day, Ash found himself seated in Director Clavell's office, a mixture of nervousness and guilt swirling in his chest. The room was quiet except for the soft ticking of a clock on the wall. Clavell sat across from him, his hands steepled under his chin, his sharp eyes studying Ash with a calm but firm expression.
Ash shifted uncomfortably in his seat, his fingers fidgeting with the hem of his jacket. He knew he wasn't the most studious person at the academy, but having the director's full attention made him feel like he was about to be lectured by Professor Oak all over again. After a few moments of silence, Clavell finally sighed and leaned back in his chair. "Mr. Ketchum," he began, his voice measured, "I understand that academics may not be your strongest suit, but distractions during lessons are concerning. Especially for someone in your unique position as both a student and the reigning Monarch."
Ash rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. "Yeah… I guess I kinda let my mind wander. Sorry about that."
Clavell raised an eyebrow. "Indeed. It's fortunate that Rika isn't here to witness this; I imagine she would have had quite a stern word with you. And as you know, both she and Chairwoman Geeta are away on important business, which means the responsibility of keeping an eye on you falls to me."
Ash winced slightly at the mention of Rika. He could already imagine her scolding him with a mix of sternness and teasing, which was somehow worse than just being yelled at. "I'll try to do better, Director Clavell. I promise."
The director nodded, his expression softening a little. "See that you do, Mr. Ketchum. You have a great deal of potential, but you must learn to balance your responsibilities—both as a trainer and as a student."
Ash gave a small, determined smile. "Got it. I won't let you down!"
Clavell allowed himself a faint smile before leaning forward. "Good. Now, if there's nothing else, you're free to return to your next class. And please… keep your focus this time."
Ash nodded quickly, standing up and adjusting his cap. "Will do! Thanks, Director!"
As Ash reached for the doorknob, Director Clavell cleared his throat, halting him in his tracks. "Oh, Mr. Ketchum, before you go..."
Ash turned back, tilting his head curiously. "Yeah? What's up?"
Clavell leaned back in his chair with a subtle, knowing smile. "At the end of the week, I'll be making an important announcement. It's something that may interest you—and the rest of the students."
Ash's curiosity immediately piqued. "Really? What kind of announcement?"
Clavell raised a hand to stop him, his expression turning playful. "Patience, young Monarch. You'll have to wait and find out alongside everyone else. Even your position doesn't grant you special privileges in this matter."
Ash crossed his arms, pouting slightly. "Aw, come on! Not even a little hint?"
Clavell chuckled softly, shaking his head. "I'm afraid not. But I assure you, it will be worth the wait."
Realizing he wouldn't get any more information, Ash sighed in defeat. "Fine, I'll wait. But now I'm really curious!"
With that, Ash gave the director a quick wave and exited the office, his mind now buzzing with questions. What could the announcement be? A tournament? A new class? Something about Pokémon? As he made his way back to his final class, Ash couldn't help but grin. Whatever it was, he had a feeling it would be exciting—and he couldn't wait to find out.
...
The final bell rang, signaling the end of the day's classes. Ash stretched his arms with a tired smile, relieved to be done with lessons. "Finally, no more lectures for today," he muttered to himself. As he started down the hallway, his eyes caught sight of a familiar figure—Penny, the shy girl with the Eevee-themed backpack.
She was crouched down near a locker, glancing under it with a weary expression. "Where is it? I could've sworn I must have dropped it here," she mumbled with frustration creeping into her voice.
Ash paused, watching her. "Isn't that…what's her name again?" He frowned, trying to recall, and then it hit him. "Oh, yeah, Penny! I wonder what she's looking for?" He thought for a moment before another realization struck him. "Wait a second…" Digging into his pocket, Ash pulled out a small keychain shaped like an Eevee. He had found it on the ground a couple of days ago and figured it belonged to her. "She's probably looking for this!" Ash said, clutching the keychain. Before he could call out to her, Penny let out a frustrated sigh and stood up, adjusting her backpack. She began walking toward another hallway, likely to check another section of the academy or even head outside to Mesagoza's districts. "Hey! Wait up!" Ash shouted, bolting after her with the keychain in hand.
Penny stopped in her tracks and turned, startled by the sudden noise. When she saw Ash jogging toward her, she blinked in surprise, her posture stiffening slightly.
Ash caught up, slightly out of breath but grinning as he held out the keychain. "Is this what you're looking for?"
Penny's eyes widened as she saw the Eevee charm. "Oh! My keychain!" she exclaimed, quickly taking it from him. Her hands trembled slightly as she inspected it, relieved to find it unharmed. "I thought I lost it for good. Thank you, Ash!"
Ash grinned, scratching the back of his head. "No problem! I found it the other day and figured it was yours. I'm just glad I could give it back to you."
Penny hugged the keychain close to her chest before carefully clipping it back onto her backpack. She glanced down shyly, avoiding Ash's eyes. "I…I guess I owe you one now."
Ash shook his head with a laugh. "Nah, you don't owe me anything. But you looked pretty stressed back there. Next time, just ask someone for help. I'm sure plenty of people would be happy to lend a hand."
Penny hesitated, her lips parting as if she wanted to say something, but she only nodded. "Y-Yeah. Maybe you're right." She adjusted her backpack again, clearly preparing to leave. "Anyway, thanks again."
As she turned to go, Ash called after her. "Hey, Penny!"
She paused, glancing back over her shoulder with a curious expression.
"If you ever need someone to talk to or, you know, hang out with, I'm around," Ash said with a warm smile.
Penny's eyes widened slightly at the unexpected offer. For a moment, she didn't respond, then gave him a small but genuine smile. "I'll think about it," she said softly before walking away, the keychain secured to her bag and her steps lighter than before.
Ash watched her go, feeling a little proud of himself. "She's pretty shy, huh?" he muttered, turning to head out himself.
Just as Ash was about to head back to his dorm room to check on Koraidon and Pikachu, his Rotom Phone buzzed and rang from his pocket. Startled, he pulled it out and frowned at the screen, which displayed "Unknown Caller."
"Huh? Who could this be at this hour?" Ash muttered. Pressing the answer button, he brought the phone to his ear. "Uh, hello?"
A distorted, almost robotic voice answered on the other line. "Are you the Monarch?"
Ash blinked, his brow furrowing. "Uh… yeah? Who's asking?"
The voice responded urgently, "I need your help with a certain group of troublemakers."
"Come again?" Ash tilted his head, confused.
"No time to explain. Just listen and do what I say," the voice snapped, sounding impatient.
Ash frowned. "Okay, is this some kind of prank call? Because if it is—"
"No," the voice interrupted, letting out an exasperated sigh. "Look, this is serious. I need your help with Team Star."
"Team Star?" Ash repeated, scratching his head. Memories of a group of rowdy students in gaudy outfits flashed through his mind. "Oh, those jokers. Wait, you're saying they're causing trouble? I thought they were just cosplaying for fun or something."
"They're more than they appear," the voice explained curtly. "And yes, I need your help to deal with them."
Ash paused, glancing down the hallway as he processed this strange request. "But why me? And why can't you deal with them yourself?"
"It's… complicated," the voice admitted, their tone softening slightly. "But I promise, everything will make sense later. You're the only one I can count on right now."
Ash sighed, still unsure. "This is a lot to take in. Before I agree to anything, who are you?"
The line went silent for a moment, the pause stretching long enough that Ash wondered if the caller had hung up. Finally, the voice responded, sounding almost hesitant.
"My name is… Cassiopeia."
"Cassiopeia?" Ash repeated, rolling the name over in his mind. It didn't ring any bells, and the distorted voice gave him no hints.
"Yes," Cassiopeia confirmed. "I can't say more right now, but please, will you help me?"
Ash hesitated for a moment before nodding to himself. "Alright, I'll hear you out. But if this turns out to be a wild Goose chase or something fishy..."
"It won't," Cassiopeia assured him. "Thank you, Ash. I'll be in touch soon with more details. Until then, stay alert."
The call abruptly ended, leaving Ash staring at his Rotom Phone with a puzzled expression. "What did I just get myself into?"
...
Ash lay on his bed, staring up at the ceiling. The conversation with Cassiopeia kept playing over and over in his head. Why me? he thought. Why did they suddenly need my help? And who even are they? The mystery gnawed at him, filling his mind with questions he couldn't answer. He glanced over at Koraidon, curled up near his bedside, its breathing slow and steady as it slept. Pikachu was sprawled out on top of the Pokémon's broad back, equally at peace. The sight brought a small smile to Ash's face. At least these two are getting some rest, he thought fondly.
Just as he let out a sigh and closed his eyes, his Rotom Phone buzzed again, its screen lighting up. Without thinking, Ash answered it, assuming it was the same mysterious caller. "Cassiopeia, is that you?" he asked quickly.
Instead of the distorted voice, a familiar, cheerful one greeted him on the other end. "Cassiopeia? No, it's me! Nemona, you silly," she replied, laughing softly.
Ash sat up quickly, his face growing warm with embarrassment. "Oh! Uh, sorry, Nemona," he stammered, rubbing the back of his head. "What's up?"
Nemona chuckled at his awkwardness but didn't comment further. "I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out tomorrow after class! We could check out some of the shops in Mesagoza. There's a bunch of cool stuff I've been meaning to show you."
Ash grinned. "That sounds great! I'm in."
"Awesome!" Nemona's excitement was evident. "I'll meet you after the last bell, okay?"
"Yeah, sure," Ash replied with a nod, even though she couldn't see it.
"Great! See you tomorrow!" Nemona said before hanging up.
Ash set his phone down and leaned back on the bed again, his thoughts swirling. The idea of hanging out with Nemona was nice—it was a chance to relax after a long day. But his mind kept circling back to Cassiopeia and their strange request.
Could they be someone I already know? he wondered, staring up at the ceiling once more. He let out another sigh, deciding to put the mystery aside for now.
Tomorrow was another day.
