The night was very quiet. All the gorillas were in their nest. Kerchak lovingly watched his mate, Kala. Her belly was full of life. She and Kerchak were expecting their first infant. He had always loved Kala→ but his love for her had only grown as her pregnancy increased. She was 8 ½ months pregnant. He heard the first howls of birth. Sprinting over to her, Kerchak could see the infant was about to make its way into the world. Kala's water had broken.
"The infant is coming," Kala said.
"I know," Kerchak whispered, taking her hand, "How are you feeling, Mon Amour."
Kala smiled at Kerchak's nickname for her.
"The pains have started," Kala said.
"I'm right here," he told her, slipping his hand into hers.
Kala sat down under a tree. She took in a deep breath and howled as a new pain hit hard.
"What do you hope we have?" Kerchak asked.
"I (breathing) will love whatever we have. I've always hoped my first infant would be a girl though," Kala admitted.
The image of a daughter made Kerchak smile. He too had dreamed of a little princess in the midst of the family.
Kala interrupted his thoughts when she howled loudly. The pain intensified.
"It feels like I'm on fire," she exclaimed.
Kerchak squeezed her hand and rubbed her back at the same time.
"I wish I could go through the pain for you!"
The pain lasted 45 seconds.
"That was short but terrible," Kala said.
The infant's head poked out. Kala howled loudly as she felt the ring of fire. She began pushing while Kerchak helped her to shift into a more comfortable position.
"I see the head," he encouraged, "I think the infant will be out with just one more push.
Kala nodded. She took a deep breath and gave a tiny push. The infant came tumbling out. Kerchak caught her in his strong arms.
"She's beautiful," he said in a whisper of awe, "What should we call her?"
Kala looked up. The moonlight was just beginning to peek through the horizon.
"Moonlight," Kala whispered, "Baby Moonlight."
"Moonlight. I love it and I love you." Kerchak whispered, "And I love her."
