Kerchak beat on his chest twice. The gorillas all came out of their nests.

"Was the infant born," Terk asked.

Kerchak smiled at her.

"She was born just moments ago," he said, "Everyone, meet baby Moonlight."

"Can I hold her," Terk asked.

Kerchak paused for a moment. Terk was only three. On the other hand, she was Kala's sister's daughter. Terk was a very loving gorilla. She would never harm anyone and have often protected others from harm. Before Kerchak could come to a decision one way or another Kala gently placed Moonlight in Terk's arms.

"You must support her head," Kala said, "She's very small. She cannot yet hold her head up."

Terk smiled brightly and licked her cousin's forehead.

"You're so gentle Terk," Kerchak said, "You're a great big cousin."

"Thank you Uncle Kerchak," Terk replied, "I love you."

Moonlight cried.

"Oh I'm sorry," Terk said, "I didn't mean to make her cry."

"Oh sweetie," Kala said, "You didn't make her cry. She's hungry. Give her to me→ I have to feed her."

Terk handed Moonlight to Kala. Kala started breastfeeding Moonlight. She suckled and soon calmed down. Kala gently burped her, rubbing her back until she fell into a comfortable sleep.

"Come along," Kerchak said softly, "We need to get a night of sleep now."

He nodded at their nests. They each went to their individual nests. Kala and Kerchak settled down with Moonlight in between them.

"I can't believe she's finally here," Kala exclaimed.

"I'm relieved that she's finally here. She's healthy and perfect."

"Did you have any doubt she would be?" Kala asked.

"I was worried," Kerchak admitted, "During your pregnancy it was rough for you. I was worried I would lose you. I was worried I would lose her. I was worried I would lose both of you."

"You were a Saint for putting up with my mood swings and irrational behavior during the pregnancy," Kala said.

"Well, I knew it was due to the baby," he said, "I'll always be patient with you. I love you Kala."

He licked Moonlight's face.

"I never thought it was possible to love anyone as much as I love you→ but Moonlight isn't just anyone."

"I don't want any negativity around Moonlight," Kala said, "It would frighten her."

"I hear you," Kerchak said, "I understand what you're saying."
