Side Story I - Afterword
So I wanted the first side story to focus mostly on Rosie, right? I think it is deserved. While she will be very prominent in the first Month of Day by Day (And probably will still feature greatly in many Scenes and so on), I thought it would be fitting. She IS the motherfucking Overlord the family will live with. So her being a constant in their lives and giving her a lot of screen time watching their development was perhaps not mandatory, but I am sure as fuck it was going to be very damn important at least.
This was true when the series wasn't around.
Then I watched the series. How I saw this going originally didn't fit anymore in my mind. I went a few days thinking about how to change it to my liking.
And a lightbulb went 'click'. Which is pretty fucking concerning, but you know.
There are many theories out there, but I liked the idea that Rosie is shit at her own romantic history. Every Overlord has something they seem to suck at, or have problems with, like any other person. For Rosie? She is a planner, a charismatic leader and a woman of drive. But she is likely much better at managing OTHERS, not herself. Most people suck at that, and for someone that is such a socialite? Rosie would likely fail at it, but still manage to make it look like she is doing beyond good. But gosh darn it! Pesky accidents, the angels and who knows what keep getting at her men! Poor old Rosie.
So I thought it was equally fitting that she'd be just as disastrous when it came to wanting what was not hers. Now, originally this had absolutely nothing to do with Carlos. Problem is, the character of Alan, Evelinde's own grandfather, was already made from the start and the general idea was very similar to Carlos. In a sense this was because said man lived roughly 50-60 years ago, around the 40s, if not earlier even earlier (This I left nebulous in my mind. The details aren't super important), so he was still strong on the 'being a gentleman' kind of thing that isn't as common nowadays. Why be a gentleman when it just fucks you over most of the time these days? But Alan was very much that kind of man and very loyal to the woman that saved his bacon.
Anastasia was also going to be a recurring character, if only because of Carlos being involved with Evelinde's family in the future. She was already meant to be Rosie's friend and also the psychologist she was going to call over to help the family. A far more level headed and pondering Cannibal, no less dangerous. She'll make her proper debut in Act 4 or so. She is also somewhat important considering she began the bit with Cambions in the Colony in this universe. I'd like to think that in cannon, if she had been alive, she would've been far less lucky than in this version of the story and she would've died, thus ending this line of thought. Sand and perhaps cruel, but hey, Hazbin and Helluva may be funny, but they have serious shit if you ignore the jokes.
HOWEVER! This, and Franklin being a woman (and a bitch), was as far as I went when I originally thought of this side story.
I didn't originally plan for Rosie's first deep foray in Ouroboros to play out this way.
I didn't plan for the longing, the breakdown, and a confession of Rosie trying with Alastor, only to be rebuffed* (gently).
*I planned on keeping Alastor close to the official cannon in that regard, and we already knew his preferences BEFORE the series. Aromatic and Asexual doesn't mean NO want for it, just no desire, and perhaps no enjoyment of such things in a more traditional way. Every person is different and, considering Alastor wants the 'perfect woman as a partner', just thanks to the mindset at the time, Rosie, a great and very driven woman, could be that… if she didn't have the background she has in Ouroboros with her many failures and very controlling way of going about things until she gave up after Alan's death. Canonically speaking I wish they'd get together tho. They are super fucking cute the time they share the screen. If the series has Alastor betray Rosie at ANY point I will kill everyone else and then myself!
I sure as fuck didn't plan for Carlos NOT to fuck it up. In fact I thought Rosie trying to scare the shit out of him would've had the interaction breaking down a bit, at least until patched up later once Rosie explained herself and worked it out as months went by.
Then I played the characters as I had them envisioned and the ball just kept on rolling this way. You know, because planning amounts to shit when something grows its own way, only to feel better than the original idea would have.
Generally I like to have an outline and a plan, but never to draft the whole thing before it is made. I like it to grow as organically as possible, which sometimes fucks me over. But excessive planning makes my perfectionist sense tingle since I begin thinking I am fucking up somewhere, which devolves into three hundred different revisions, unhappiness, rewrites, looking back a million extra times and things end up NOT MOVING.
So I let the story write itself.
And… uh… This happened? It got me in the fee-fees a bit, so hopefully it did the same for ya. I don't think this will evolve into Rosie going full time lover or anything like it, more like a 'casual' thing because she knows how she'd act otherwise. More along the lines of having just a piece of happiness, since every time she tried to get it all things just… didn't pan out.
It probably will help answer a few questions for those that reached ACT II's end before reading this. And if not? Well, you got a few answers when the time comes. Either way, I am happy with how it turned out. Is it perfect? No. But I seriously need to stop trying to make it so.
Perfection doesn't fucking exist and trying to achieve it is making me miserable. I just want to enjoy writing shit for whoever wants to read it. Probably would manage to finally work up the courage to finish and publish something. Either way, this has been the first side story. Hope the next one entertains you as much as it will me.
Now, get some bullshit data I cooked up on the Overlords. See ya guys next week.
