Knowing her story - Chapter 16
My brother stood in front of the battle general, he didn't let her be afraid. She passed by me, stopped, looked into my eyes from under her shoulder, a cold look that could have frozen me. She looked down and from a pocket of her dress, she took out my little white mouse, which was my best friend at the time and said:
- The day you learn to take care of your best friend, you'll become a real man," and handed me the little white mouse safe and sound.
My brother died when he went to defend her from being raped by Charles at the age of fifteen. She still carries this guilt to this day, and we didn't manage to punish Charles III. In the end, he managed to disappear the file and Beth's father signed for her because she was a minor and there he states that Charles didn't do anything, that his daughter may have crossed the line, allowing or hinting at Charles, and she as a girl already had her wiles. The file was kept under lock and key.
Everyone noticed that Lieutenant Frankison Thatcher's face was grim and he was frothing with rage at the thought of the case.
There's no way they're going to lay a hand on my cousin and her son, I've met Jack and been his superior, I know the struggle Elizabeth has been in for years, but I know how scared she's been these last sixty days, when she called us. I must also inform you, Charlote, that we have almost proven the innocence of Jack Thorton, and others thanks to Elizabeth, she took a great risk, but we managed to gather witnesses and arrest several people, including the police themselves. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I can't say that, in fact, my father told me about your Nathan and Bill files, I must say that it wasn't my father who did all the strategizing, to set up and catch Captain Haver, that little general of ours who set it all up.
- Stop it! What are you talking about? Charlote asked angrily and with a red face.
- From what I can see you didn't know until now, not that I'm surprised, but this is Elizabeth. She didn't want you to suffer. She suspected something at the funeral, there was no gun salute, no superiors to pay their respects, her pension has still not been approved because of the injustice behind Jack Thorton's name, but also because of her father's fingers forcing her to accept marriage to Charles. Jack, along with his team who died, is being accused of being deserters, a process that was going on internally and Elizabeth found out.
-But how did she find out? Normally it's secret. Nathan asked.
Sergeant Edward explained:
-"Look, she came to me, I don't do things like that, but she threatened me with those teacher's eyes and hands on her waist; and she imitated Beth ...
- Either you find out what's going on with Jack Thorton's name, or I swear your sister here will be dead to you. Another thing... and he fell silent, glaring at me. You've got five days for that and he slammed the door and got on the train.
A loud laugh from Tom and Charlote broke the silence of the night.
- That's my Lizzie.
-Bill, as for you and Nathan, she was dressed as ...haa...haaa. I mean, I don't even have to say it; my father nearly had a heart attack when he saw her, she went to Hamilton, to the gambling houses, in a very short red dress, high heels, red lipstick, well, you get the idea, right? She went to the table, used a theater, played poker and won every round, then my father and I spotted her, she called a man to the back corner and winked at him in a way I never thought I'd see her do. He was one of Captain Haver's subordinates, who we found out was in the case against Jack and five other deceased boys. When we got to the bottom, she had one foot on a stool, her hand on one side of his waist and a gun to his head, she made him tell her everything. When it came to the day of Nathan and Bill's trial, she went there, but asked to see the subordinate who had been arrested, i.e. the witness, but before he gave his testimony. She went into the room, came up to him, said something quietly, almost in a whisper in his ear. I was really scared of her that day, the look on her face, well I don't intend to ever see it again. She left and didn't let anyone else see her during the trial, Lieutenant Frankison explained.
Lucas went on to explain: I took her away, we picked up Fiona and Jack Junior at the station and drove back so that none of you would find out. When she told us, we had a good laugh all the way home; If you want to know, the crazy woman said that if he didn't tell the truth about you two, she'd already left the gun there in prison with some new acquaintances of hers that week, and that he was very happy with her so they were going to solve some of her problems, and that they were going to leave the gun well guarded in one of his places and take it out every day ...Then everyone's mind was made up and they all burst out laughing.
Bill and Nathan had tears in their eyes. Knowing that she had fought for them, putting herself at risk or pretending to be vulgar, putting her reputation and even her job at risk, that was a lot of love involved. Arriving at the hotel, after a meal and three hours of rest, they decided to sit down and make plans. That's when Lucas came running from the mercantile, where he sent a telegram to his wife Fiona, asking her to take care of herself, very agitated, he went on to tell her that the city was full of Charles and Pinkson's henchmen in every square; Everyone shivered, they knew that if they caught Elizabeth, she would do everything not to go with them. Just then there was a knock on the door, and Wynn Delany appeared. Wide hugs and a lot of quick thinking from everyone as they began to look around and make plans. She was going to the Northern Territories, we were all close. They needed to think and manage to save those two.
