Chapter 1: Shadows of the Past
The soft golden rays of the setting sun stretched over the Hidden Leaf Village, painting the rooftops in warm hues. Naruto strolled through the streets, hands tucked behind his head, his mind wandering. It had been weeks since the events at the Blood Prison, but he couldn't shake the memories of Ryūzetsu—her sacrifice, her strength, and the surprising turn of fate that had brought her back to life.
He glanced over his shoulder. Ryūzetsu walked a few steps behind, her crimson eyes scanning the bustling streets with guarded curiosity.
"You're too quiet," Naruto said, breaking the silence. "Aren't you amazed by the village? I mean, look at all this! So much better than… uh…" He trailed off, realizing the thoughtless comparison to the grim Blood Prison.
Ryūzetsu smirked faintly. "It's… overwhelming, to be honest. A place like this feels unreal after everything I've been through."
Naruto slowed his pace to walk beside her. "You'll get used to it. Everyone here's really nice once you meet them! I can introduce you to my friends later—well, most of them. Sakura can be kind of scary, but she's cool. And Shikamaru? Total genius, even if he's super lazy…"
Ryūzetsu chuckled softly at his rambling. "You've got good people around you, Naruto. That's rare."
He grinned at her. "Well, you're one of those people now. Believe it!"
Before Ryūzetsu could respond, a distant explosion rocked the air. The ground trembled slightly, and a plume of smoke rose from the edge of the village. Naruto's expression shifted instantly from cheerful to serious.
"Trouble," he muttered, his body tensing. "Stay close to me!"
Ryūzetsu placed a hand on the hilt of her sword. "I can handle myself, you know."
"Yeah, yeah," Naruto replied with a grin, already darting toward the commotion. "Just don't get left behind!"
Ryūzetsu rolled her eyes but followed him, her speed keeping her close.
At the scene, the pair found several Leaf shinobi locked in combat with rogue enemies dressed in dark cloaks. They moved with precision, targeting specific buildings near the village's outskirts.
"Who the heck are these guys?" Naruto asked aloud as he skidded to a stop.
One of the rogue shinobi turned, his gaze locking onto Naruto. "Uzumaki," he growled, voice dripping with hatred. "We've found you at last."
Naruto's eyes narrowed. "Me? What do you want with me?"
The rogue didn't answer. Instead, he lunged forward, kunai gleaming. Naruto barely had time to block with his own blade, the force of the attack pushing him back.
"Don't just stand there!" Naruto called to Ryūzetsu as she unsheathed her sword.
Ryūzetsu didn't need further encouragement. She leapt into the fray, her blade moving with precision as she deflected another attacker's kunai. Her movements were fluid, a stark contrast to Naruto's raw power.
"You're stronger than you look," Naruto remarked, grinning as he dispatched another foe with a well-placed Rasengan.
"Focus, Naruto," Ryūzetsu retorted, her tone sharp but amused.
As the battle raged on, the remaining rogue shinobi began to retreat, vanishing into the shadows. Naruto and Ryūzetsu stood back-to-back, panting slightly, their weapons still raised.
"Cowards," Naruto muttered, glaring into the darkness.
"They weren't here to win," Ryūzetsu said, her crimson eyes scanning the surroundings. "They were testing us. Or you."
"Me?" Naruto looked puzzled.
Ryūzetsu nodded. "They knew who you were. And they weren't random attackers—they had a purpose."
Before Naruto could respond, the village's reinforcements arrived, led by Shikamaru.
"You two all right?" Shikamaru asked, surveying the scene.
"Yeah, we're fine," Naruto replied. "But those guys… they were after me."
Shikamaru frowned. "We'll debrief later. For now, let's regroup and figure out what they wanted."
Later that evening, after the dust had settled, Naruto and Ryūzetsu sat atop the Hokage Monument, the village glowing softly below.
"I don't get it," Naruto said, breaking the silence. "Why are people still coming after me? I've already got enough on my plate with being a jinchūriki and all."
Ryūzetsu glanced at him, her expression thoughtful. "You're more than just a jinchūriki, Naruto. You're someone who changes people. You changed me. That kind of power attracts attention—for better or worse."
Naruto rubbed the back of his neck, his cheeks tinged pink. "Heh, I guess. I just don't want you getting dragged into my mess."
Ryūzetsu smirked. "Too late for that. Besides, I'm not going anywhere. I owe you my life, remember?"
Naruto's face softened. "You don't owe me anything, Ryūzetsu. You saved me, too. And… I think you're pretty amazing."
Ryūzetsu's eyes widened slightly, a hint of pink coloring her pale cheeks. "Naruto…"
Before either could say more, the wind picked up, carrying the scent of rain. Naruto laughed, breaking the tension.
"Looks like a storm's coming," he said, standing and offering her a hand.
Ryūzetsu hesitated, then took it. "Let's head back," she said softly.
As they made their way down, a quiet thought lingered in Ryūzetsu's mind. Maybe this village could be my home after all… if he's in it.
