Moving In

As Shinoa and her squad stepped into the house that the villagers had graciously offered as a refuge in exchange for their protection against the menacing monsters that prowled the area, she turned to her comrades with a hopeful smile.

"What do you all think of this place? Does it suit your needs?"

The journey had been arduous, especially with Yuu still in a comatose state. The male members of the squad had taken turns carrying him, their muscles aching from the effort, but they pressed on, fueled by the urgency of their situation.

Mika, who had just walked into the spacious living room with Yuu slung across his back, shrugged nonchalantly.

"It'll have to do for now." He glanced around, taking in the high ceilings and open layout. "Besides, we don't have the luxury of being picky. We should count ourselves fortunate that we stumbled upon this village and that the residents are willing to shelter us, at least until Yuu-chan wakes up."

Yoichi, who was busy setting down their bags on the floor, nodded in agreement. "Honestly, I never expected the villagers here to offer up a whole house. One of them mentioned that the previous occupants left some time ago, but with a bit of tidying up, it should feel just like home."

Kimizuki snorted dismissively. "Just don't get too comfortable, you guys. Once the Demon Army and the Hiragi clan recover from their losses, they'll definitely be on our trail again. We can't forget about the vampires either."

Mitsuba rolled her eyes at Kimizuki's bluntness. "We're all aware of the risks, Kimizuki. But we need to keep a positive outlook, especially for Yuu's sake. He's been through so much, using his seraph powers to save us all. It's our turn to protect him while he recuperates. We owe him that much."

Makoto Narumi's brow furrowed with concern as he chimed in. "I just hope his recovery won't take too long. We can't move forward with Yuichiro unconscious, and staying here puts the villagers at risk too."

"Have faith, Narumi-san," Shinoa replied gently, trying to reassure him. "Yuu has been knocked out more times than we can count, but he's never been in a coma for more than a week. He'll pull through."

Mika nodded, though concern lingered in his voice. "I hope you're right, Shinoa. For now, let's get him settled in. Fortunately, it looks like the previous owner left behind some usable furniture. I just hope that includes beds because sleeping on the floor is not my idea of a good time."

To their relief, the house had ample rooms and enough beds for everyone. It was quite spacious, boasting two bathrooms, a generously sized kitchen, and a dining area that would accommodate them all.

After carefully placing Yuu in one of the beds, the squad began to unpack their belongings. Yoichi assisted Mika in removing Yuu's dirty and blood-stained Demon Army uniform, which bore the marks of their harrowing escape, including two large tears where his wings had burst forth. They gently dressed him in comfortable sleepwear.

Mika examined Yuu's tattered black jacket, shaking his head as he spoke softly. "I'm afraid this uniform is beyond saving. There are too many cuts and stains, and I doubt we can get the blood out."

"That's okay; he won't need it anymore since he's no longer part of the Demon Army—or any of us for that matter," Yoichi replied, trying to inject some cheer into the situation. "But if Yuu wants, I can arrange to have another uniform made for him. I'm sure there's a talented tailor in the village."

Mika couldn't help but smile at the thought. Initially, he had felt disheartened at the prospect of relying on Yuu's friends for support, but he gradually recognized that he couldn't shoulder the burden of protecting his best friend and adoptive brother alone, even with his newfound vampire strength.

"Yeah, I suppose that makes sense," Mika agreed, placing a gentle hand on Yuu's forehead as he watched his brother sleep. "I'm sure he would appreciate having a new uniform."

Yoichi glanced at Mika's own tattered uniform and raised an eyebrow. "What about you, Mika? Your uniform looks pretty bad too. Since it's white, all the blood and stains really stand out. Would you like to have another one made as well? I can talk to the tailor about that too."

"Maybe; I'll think it over. I have other clothes to wear, and I'd prefer not to draw too much attention to myself. I wouldn't want to scare the villagers," Mika replied, pondering the wisdom of blending in for the time being.

"Good point. It's still early, so we should venture into the village to gather food and supplies. Shinoa and Mitsuba could stay behind to clean up, while the rest of us head out. What do you think?" Yoichi suggested.

Mika looked at Yuu, contemplating his decision. "Would you mind if I stayed here today? I just want to ensure Yuu-chan is comfortable and be ready when he wakes up."

Understanding Mika's desire, Yoichi nodded, though uncertainty lingered in his mind about how long Yuu would remain unconscious. He wanted to maintain a good rapport with Mika, knowing they would all need each other's support.

"I understand. Just remember, you don't have to shoulder everything alone. We'll all take care of Yuu together, okay?"

Mika was taken aback by Yoichi's words; they echoed sentiments Yuu himself had shared with him during their time as vampire livestock in Sanguinem. Was he really that transparent?

"Is everything alright, Mika?" Yoichi asked, noticing the surprise etched on Mika's face.

"Yes, of course," Mika replied hastily, eager to shift the focus away from his thoughts. "Just let me stay with Yuu today. I promise I'll join you all for hunting tomorrow."

"Sure thing. I'll head out now. If you need anything at all, just let me know."

"Thank you. See you later," Mika said softly, his gaze returning to the peaceful face of his brother as he settled back into a chair beside the bed, ready to keep vigil until Yuu stirred once more.
