I don't remember when I woke up exactly, but I do remember that when I finally did, I just layed still, eyes shut, hopping what just happened was all a bad dream. My body hurt all over, but my legs and stomach area hurt the most. It felt like they were on fire, but cold, and I didn't dare move them, in fear of making it worse.
"HE'S AWAKE!" someone shouted next to me, startling me from my rest. "WHAT SHOULD I DO?"
I opened my eyes slightly and saw a purple and white ghost with a skull for a face looking at me. 'A Duskull,' I thought, 'weird.' I carefully looked around and saw I was in a circular room with a domed roof. I was layed down on a bed made of straw, and there were two others just like it in the room. Other than the beds, it was bare of any decoration, with just a singular window letting in sunlight from outside. The only person here other than me was the Duskull.
"SPOOKS, CUT IT OUT WITH THE YELLING, YOU'RE GOING TO DISTURB OUR OTHER PATIENTS!" I hear someone further away shout back, getting closer as they spoke. The pokemon responsible turned the corner and entered the room through the large single doorway.
"Jeez Spooks, you're going to terrify the poor child if you don't stop shouting so much. Now go run along and help Audrey with prepping fresh bandages while I tend to the patient." A pink, round pokemon with two short legs and arms spoke. 'A Chansey,' I thought to myself, noticing the pouch on her belly with an egg-like object in it.
"Ok," Spooks said cheerfully, floating out of the room and turning down the hall.
The Chansey watched her leave and sighed, turning to face me. "And how are you doing sweetie?" She looked at me in silence as I didn't answer and said, "Oh, right, my name is Casey. It's a pleasure to meet you."
"S-steven," I managed to croak out, my throat dry and sore.
"A wonderful name," Casey replied. "I know you didn't really get off on the right foot, but that Duskull back there is my assistant, Danielle, but we just call her Spooks, as she loves to prank our patients. I hope you can forgive her, she's really a good kid, even if a little to excitable."
"No pro-" I began before breaking into a nasty cough, my whole body wracking with pain from the force of it. "No problem," I finally managed after the coughing died.
"Poor dear," Casey said. "Here, better get you some water, I'm sure you're dying of thirst." She turned around and walked out into the hall for a moment, then returned with a bowl and pitcher, placing the bowl in front of me. She poured water into the bowl from the pitcher and brought the bowl to my face.
"Here, drink," she smiled at me happily.
I put my snout in the bowl and began drinking the water, careful not to have too much, too fast. I just lay there, my jaw soaking in the water, drinking slowly as Casey watched me from the side, smiling. After getting my fill, I pulled my mouth from the bowl and shook it a little bit to get some of the water off before laying my head back down on the bed.
Casey took the bowl from in front of me and said "Now, just get some more rest, I'll be back shortly to change your bandages," before turning and walking back out the door.
"Thank you..." I whisper as she leaves. She must have heard me, because she turned her head slightly, a smile showing on her face. I lay there and shut my eyes, thinking how lucky I must be to not be dead. I still have no idea where I am or who I am, and I'm not really in any condition to be asking questions to get answers right now.
I must have fallen asleep again, because when I woke up, it was dark in the room, moonlight filtering through the lone window. 'It must be night time,' I thought to myself. I looked around to see if anyone was here with me. Nope, same empty beds, same empty room. I layed my head back down and was about to close my eyes when I heard and felt a light rumbling from my stomach. Well, no big surprise that I would be hungry, I haven't eaten since getting to this strange world, but I couldn't just get up and get some food.
My body didn't hurt as much right now, the pain feeling slightly numbed, which means that Casey probably changed my bandages already, and probably put some kind of numbing solution in them. The air did have a faintly sweet scent to it, now that I thought of it, which only made me hungrier.
I lay there for a while, just trying to ignore the hunger, but it only got worse as time passed. So, against my better judgment, I decided to get up and find some food. Cautiously rolling onto my belly, wincing slightly in pain, I put pressure on my legs and slowly stood up. They felt extremely sore, but they didn't feel broken anymore.
Wobbling, a little off balance, I slowly made my way to the doorway, doing my best not to fall over or run into anything, not that there was anything to run into anyway. I almost made it to the door when I saw strange lights in the hall just outside. There was a yellow oval, with the center hollowed out, floating in the air at about face level, and two separate horizontal thick lines at the same height, slightly above the ring. Then I saw two red eyes glow as the pokemon in front of me opened them. I back-peddled a bit in surprise, tripping and falling on my ass.
"Oh, sorry," the pokemon spoke. "Didn't mean to spook you there bud." I just look at him, dumbfounded, unable to say anything and unsure what to do when my stomach growled again. "Here," he said, chuckling to himself, stepping out of the dark hallway and into the moonlit room, "let's get you back in bed so you can rest and I'll go get you some food and water my friend."
Now that I could see him clearly, he had jet-black fur with yellow rings on his head, ears, legs, and tail. 'An Umbreon,' I realized, feeling stupid for being so spooked. He just smiled at me, leaning his body against mine to help support me as we slowly made our way back to the bed I was in before. Once I was back on the bed, I gently layed down on my stomach and looked at the Umbreon. He nodded at me, smiling slightly.
"I'll be right back," he said, turning to leave.
"W-wait," I called out. "What's your name?"
He turned around, looked at me, then grinned. "Urian. My name is Urian bud." He turned and walked to the doorway, taking a slight pause there. Looking back he said "I'll be right back, just sit tight," before walking out of the room and down the hall.
I lay there waiting, trying to get my thoughts together, and to remember all the events from when I woke up. I was in a cave, laying in someone's blood, then I left, ran into a forest, chased by Kabutops. Then I fell in a river and went over a waterfall, getting grabbed by something bird-like mid-air. I free myself, fall into a river, break my legs, then almost drown. Later someone saves me, pulling me out of the river and Kabutops shows up again, but after that it's kind of a blur.
So why were the Kabutops and his buddies after my life? Why was I in that cave? Who's blood was that? I didn't have any injuries when I woke up, so if it was mine, how did I heal so quickly, and with what?
Too many more questions ran through my head, unanswered, when Urian returned with a bag hanging off his shoulders, a pitcher and bowl glowing with a faint energy following behind him, floating in the air. He came up to me, setting the pitcher and bowl next to me as he unslung his bag from his body.
"Here," he says, pulling a blue, round object from the bag. "Eat this, it should help with the hunger." He sets the object in front of me and grabs the pitcher and starts pouring water into the bowl. I turn my attention to the round object in front of me, grabbing it with my front paws. I bring it close to my mouth, sniffing it cautiously. It has the same sweet scent as my bandages, so I take a bite of it. 'Sweet,' I thought to myself, 'but not TOO sweet. Juicy and a bit of tart too.'
As I ravenously finish off the sweet food, Urian chuckles, bringing the bowl filled with water and a couple more of the round, blue foods over in front of me. "You liked the Oran berry, huh?" He asks. I just nod in response, licking my lips of all the juice that had dribbled out of the berry when I ate it. "Go on then, I'm sure you're still hungry. You were out for three days afterall."
Barely pausing to say "Thanks," to Urian, I quickly finish off the other two berries, enjoying their sweet taste, then drink from the bowl until I'm full. "Thank you," I tell Urian as he takes the bowl and sets it to the side. "I don't know what came over me when I got up, I was just so hungry."
He chuckled and said "Don't worry about it, it took you three days to really wake up."
"Is that how long I've been here?" I asked.
"Just about," Urian answered. "You were hurt really badly. When we took you in from the field trauma team, you had four broken legs, a really deep gash in your stomach, and countless cuts and bruises all over your body. You had lost a lot of blood, and we weren't sure you were going to make it, but we never gave up."
"Thank you," I say again. "I owe you all my life."
"No, no!" Urian said with an awkwardly nervous grin on his face. "We just did our job. We're just glad you made it, and have been healing really well." His face turned semi-serious. "You've been healing exceptionally well actually. Your wounds should have taken at least a month to recover from, but your legs are already at the point where you can safely walk on them, and the cut on your belly is almost gone completely too. It won't even leave a scar."
"Well, that's a good thing right?" I asked, confused.
"Of course, of course," he said smiling. "I guess it just means our treatments were much more effective than we thought."
"Hmmm..." I say, laying my head down, content with a full stomach. "Hey, Urian? You mind if I ask you a few questions?"
"Sure, what's on your mind?"
"Where am I?" I asked.
"Oh, you're in the Guild medical wing," he answered.
"What's a Guild?" I asked confused.
He looked at me dumbfounded and confused as well. "Well, we're a group that take jobs from the local populous and solve their problems, big or small." He paused, thinking for a second. "You've never heard of the Guild before?"
"No," I replied, shaking my head. "I don't really know anything. I woke up in a cave with no idea where I was or any memories either. The only thing I can remember is my name, Steven, and that I think I used to be human."
"You used to be a human!?" He exclaimed. "Are you sure?"
"Not really," I replied, shrugging. "When I woke up everything was hazy. It's probably just a weird dream or something, right?"
"Maybe," Urian answered, "but you say you don't remember anything else really, right?" I nod silently. "What do you remember between then and now? It might help answer some of your questions."
I told him my story, sparing no detail, hoping to get some insight from another person. He listened silently, and then went deep into thought when I finished. I waited for him to finish thinking when he said "Then maybe you were. We can't completely discount the possibility of it just yet. Your amnesia doesn't help with figuring this out, but maybe by traveling or meeting the right pokemon you could get the answers you seek."
"Have you met any other humans before then?" I asked.
"Nope," he replied. I looked down at the ground in defeat. "But, our Guildmaster might have, or knows someone who has, so don't lose hope. Just don't go mentioning anything about being a human to anyone not on the medical staff. It could be difficult to protect you and your identity if someone is hunting you."
"I didn't do something bad before, did I?" I ask worriedly, downcast at the thought.
He turns to smile at me and says "I don't think so. If you were bad before you'd probably be bad now, and you're not bad now, so I think it's unlikely. But even if you did, we can help you make up for it, and even give you a chance at a better life."
"Hmmmm..." I fumed inside my head, terrified I had maybe done something before I lost my memories.
"Don't worry Steven, I doubt you did anything, and I'm sure whomever your family is is looking for you right now. We'll just need to ask and look around for you." I looked up at him, sad but now slightly hopeful. "Look, don't worry, the Guild will help handle everything. Everything's going to work, just you wait, but now it's time for me to go write a report and you need a little more rest. Your wounds haven't completely healed yet."
He turned to leave, taking the bag and pitcher with him, leaving the bowl of water. He turned to look back in the doorway and said "Get some sleep, we'll get to answer your questions in the morning when you wake up. Just get some good rest, and I've left you some water if you get thirsty again, you'll need all the water you can get with all the blood you lost. Sleep well Steven."
I lay my head back down, rolling onto my side and shut my eyes, head swirling with questions, but eventually the exhaustion from all the excitement tonight and my wounds took over and I fell asleep. When I woke up the room was lightly lit through the window. It must have been early in the morning, because I didn't hear anyone else up.
Feeling a bit stiff I stretch my body cautiously while I was still laying on my side, hearing my back and legs pop. For a brief instant it was painful, then I felt great, my body able to relax after staying in the same position for what was supposedly three days. Getting up I went over to the bowl of water and drank some before taking a slow walk around the edge of the room to finish stretching myself out.
My slow pacing was interrupted by a light knocking on the wall right outside the doorway. I looked over and saw Casey standing there with a new pokemon: a floating keychain with hollow eyes on one of the keys. 'A Klefki,' I realized.
"Steven, I see you're up," Casey said. "Are you feeling better after some food?"
"Yes, thank you very much," I replied, nodding.
"That's good, and I'm glad," she smiled. "This here is Kikimora, but just call her Kiki. She's the medical staff's psychologist, and she's here to talk to you to see if we can help you get your memory back."
" 'A pleasure to meet you' ," I heard in my head. I looked around, confused and thinking I really was loosing my mind. " 'Hehe. It's me silly, Kiki.' "
I looked at her and asked, "How are you in my head?"
" 'Telepathy, dear. It's how I communicate with other pokemon.' " Kiki said. " 'Now, how about we sit down and you can tell me everything you know. We can start there, then explore our options to try to fix your amnesia.' "
All of us walked over to the three beds and I sat down on the one I slept on. I looked over at Kiki, then at Casey, who nodded to me, then told them everything I remembered from when I woke up in the cave until now. They listened quietly, with Kiki only stopping me a couple times to confirm something I had said. When I was done there was a silence for a moment.
"Dear, how horrible," Casey spoke, breaking the silence. "Well, we're going to try to get you all the help we can and try to get you back to your family, human or pokemon. What are your thoughts Kiki?"
" 'Well, I feel he's definitely telling the truth that he doesn't remember anything, but I don't know about the human aspect. There's just no evidence to either prove or disprove that claim, which doesn't leave us much to go on. The pokemon that attacked him and Team Hurricane also concern me, but we don't know enough about them either to make any connections to Steven's story.' "
"Well, I guess that means I won't be going home any time soon, not that I know where that is," I say solemnly, looking down.
"Now, don't say that," Casey said. "Just because WE can't do anything for you right here, right now, I'm sure our Guildmaster can do something for you. I need to do a checkup today to check on your condition, but from the look of things, you'll be released from our care by the end of the day."
"So where will I go? I don't have anywhere to go to or call home. And I'm pretty sure I don't have anything to pay you for your services or to get a place to stay," I say, worriedly, looking at the floor.
"Don't worry about that dear Zorua!" a jolly booming voice said from the doorway. Looking up, I see a large orange and tan dragon with small wings and wearing a large green scarf standing there with a massive grin across his face. 'A Dragonite,' I knew subconsciously. "Nice to meet you Steven! I'm Drake, Guildmaster of the Guild of Miracles and you'll be staying with us for now!"
