Chapter 34: Ripping off the band-aid
Kagome
Kimi had driven me back to the house. I reached out for the door handle, but Kimi put her hands on mine.
"Here, take this before you go," she said.
She reached into her purse and pulled out a business card. Yes, I could definitely see where Sesshomaru got it from. I took it and slipped it into my pocket. I didn't wait for her driver to open the door for me. I got out of the window and headed for the door. She rolled down her window at the second.
"I look forward to meeting your mother. Remember my little human. No more running." She said with a smile.
My little human, I had to get her to change that somehow.
She rolled up her window and they drove off. I turned back to the front door and took a deep breath.
Just go inside Kagome. There is nowhere left for you to run.
I trudged up to the front door, heading towards the impending interrogation. I reached out my hand to knock, but the door opened before I could. It was Sesshomaru standing there.
"You were waiting for me. Weren't you?" I asked in a small voice.
He nodded, stepping out of the way. I went inside and he closed the door behind me. Sesshomaru gestured to the living room. I went inside and sat in the same spot I had before when Kimi was over. I felt like a kid about to be scolded, for keeping secrets. He sat opposite me. I looked up at him. The expression on his face wasn't an angry one. I couldn't tell what it was exactly. No, he was waiting; for an explanation.
"Are you angry with me?" I asked stalling.
"No, I am simply trying to understand."
"To understand?"
"Yes, I want to understand you. I want to understand why you are keeping things from me. I want to understand if you do not trust me. If that is the case. I want to know what I can do to change that."
I fidgeted with my fingers. "I trust you wholeheartedly. You're one of the few people I'd trust with my life... Kimi said you thought I didn't trust me."
"Hn. You two seemed to have had an interesting conversation. That is more than I can say for us."
I exhaled deeply. "What I told you and Kimi this morning, was the same thing I was going to tell you upstairs when we were in the shower."
"There's more, isn't there?."
I said nothing.
"That is why you were in such a hurry today. You were running. Running from telling me the truth."
"I trust you," I reassured him. "I just don't know how to feel about this situation. Or how to go about it. It is hard to talk about something, I haven't really accepted myself."
He leaned forward. "Alright. Then, explain it to me. Let me help you understand."
I gnawed at the inside of my cheek. "My mother has two other children. A younger boy, and an older girl."
He nodded. "Go on."
I looked him in the eyes. "The older daughter's name... my sister is Kikyo."
I could see his eyes widen slightly before he relaxed again.
"I see."
I sighed. "Exactly."
He came over, sitting beside me. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me close.
"Kikyo is how she got my number and knew to get in contact with me," I admitted.
"She meant to derail you. She most likely knew you would find out. About the blood relation between you and her. However, she ended up helping you as well. Giving you the one thing you wanted the most; Your mother."
"Mmm."
"What are you feeling right now?" he asked.
"Anger, exhaustion, but mainly confusion. I don't understand why she hates me so much. I dreamed about finding my biological family for so long. I wondered if I had siblings and if they were happy. What they would be like, If I met them would we get along and be close? I wondered what my parents would be like. I had all of these questions. I finally got my answers it wasn't at all what I envisioned. It was the furthest thing from it. The sister I dreamed about has hated me this entire time, and I don't even know why. I just..."
"You wanted your family. You wanted all of them to want you. The way you wanted them, and knowing that two members of that family are not welcoming you the way you wanted. You're hurt, and rightfully so." he said quietly.
He leaned back and laid me on top of him. I relaxed into him.
"I just wanted this one thing. I've been through enough already. Why couldn't I just have them?"
He rubbed circles on my back. "You have me. You have us. We are your family now. We have been since Inuyasha brought you home to us."
I'm so tired of this. I want to hide." I asked getting choked up.
"You have been through many things in your life. Things that others, nor myself even know about. You have been broken down, but now you're stronger. Stronger than you ever thought yourself to be. Do not let this small part of your past influence the future you have ahead of you. I want you to remember how much you have overcome. Do not lose the smile you have found in all of this. Do not let this shake you Kagome. You have to get back to yourself. No matter how difficult it may be. It may take a short while, but I will be there for you every step of the way. Remember that."
I buried my face in his chest, grabbing fistfuls of his shirt. While I silently cried. I stayed like that for some time. Until I stopped crying. It was already past noon. We'd been here since the morning.
"You're too good for me. You need to be with the perfect woman." I joked, trying to lighten the mood.
He chuckled. "I am right where I should be, and I am with the perfect woman." He said kissing my head.
"Maybe in another universe, I wouldn't be so difficult."
"There is nothing difficult about you Kagome." He said seriously. "It's a privilege to know. Do not think so little of yourself. Focus on happier things."
I propped my head up on my chin. "Things like?"
He smirked. "Our wedding. Right now, you should be sorting through cakes. Finding a dress, and picking the flowers you want. Not dealing with any of this."
"Do you have a favorite flower?" I asked him.
He smiled. "Yes, you," he replied.
I rolled my eyes and smiled. "Oh yeah? Would you pick me up and bring me home then?"
He shook his head. "No, I would leave you planted where you are. I would water you and watch you grow."
I tucked my head back into his chest. "You're so corny," I said muffled.
He chuckled. "Is that why you are blushing?"
I could feel my phone vibrating in my back pocket. I pulled it out and checked the screen It was Sango calling.
"No more running," Sesshomaru said.
I rolled off him and poked him in the chest.
"You sound like your mother." I teased making him smile.
"I will give you two some privacy. I will be in the kitchen if you need me," he said walking away.
I sprawled out on the floor and answered.
"Hey."
"Hey, girlie. I've missed you."
"I've missed you too, but life has been going on."
She laughed. "Planning a wedding, while discovering your bio family will do that to you. You know, if you want to. You can still run away at the last minute. You know I'm always here to rescue you." she joked.
"What are you doing? Weren't you supposed to be with your father? It sounds way too quiet in the background."
I was asking these silly questions to stall.
He sighed. "I was supposed to, but you know how I feel about them. I feel like I'm in jail when I'm around unfunny people for too long. They do not match my energy. Sometimes I think I'm adopted. Besides, I would rather spend time with you. My best friend in the whole wide world... even when she's dodging me."
I sighed. "I'm sorry Sango. Life has just been a lot lately. I have a lot going on
"Did I do something wrong? Is that why you aren't confining in me anymore? Ever since I dropped you off to meet your bio mom, things have been a little strange. At least that's how I feel. Please tell me I'm just being paranoid. I just want to know you're okay."
"I'm in a weird place right now. It doesn't matter how many times I talk about it. I'm not sure how to explain it again. maybe I'm just overcomplicating things. I guess I'll just come out and say it. As it turns out I have siblings. An older sister and a younger brother."
"Oh my god wait, that's great? What could be so wrong about that?"
"One of them is Kikyo. She has known we were related this entire time," I said dryly.
I clamped my mouth shut after the words left my mouth. The words lingered in the air. I could tell she was processing it.
"Holy shit." she finally said.
"Exactly. Also my dad turns out to be a piece of shit who didn't want me because I was a girl."
"Oh, Kags... honey I'm so sorry."
I sighed. "I'm sorry for myself."
"What about your mom?" she asked hesitantly.
I smiled. "She is wonderful. She couldn't be more perfect.
"Oh thank God. I was worried there for a second. You were one more traumatic experience from becoming a psycho."
I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.
"There she is," Sango said.
Sango always knew how to make me feel better.
"I met Sesshomaru's mom too today."
"What is she like?"
"She's so beautiful it's blinding. She has this elegance about her. Everything about her is perfect. Sesshomaru has definitely inherited a lot of things from her. I think it's safe to say she likes me. She gave me a pet name and everything."
"What does she call you?"
"My little human," I told her.
She laughed. "I'm not sure how to feel about that."
"My sentiments exactly. His mom wants to meet my mom, and I'd love to introduce you to her too."
"I would love to meet the lady whose womb you came out of."
I laughed. "Oh god, okay. I'll talk to you later."
"Kisses, love you, bye," she said hanging up.
"It seems like you two had a good conversation."
I rolled over and looked up at him.
I smiled. "Yeah. I needed it. Thank you for not letting me run away."
He smirked. "You're welcome. It's almost as if you need other people."
"Yeah, yeah you were right."
He smiled. "I'm sorry, come again."
I threw the throw pillow at him, and he caught it.
"I've been thinking. What if you stopped working at S-publishing? Especially with everything going on. I could make a call. Someone would pack your things for you. So you would not have to go one. I am not saying you have to do this. It is a simple sugge-"
"I'll do it. I want a fresh start, and I want to focus on starting our future. Who gives a shit if my sister hates me. I'll get over it."
He set the pillow down on the couch. He held his hand out to me, and I took it. he helped me to my feet.
He kissed the back of my hand. "Come, let's go to bed."
"Ah yes. That bedroom might as well be on the other side of the world." I joked.
Forward onto better things.
