Chapter 5 - Alice
I thought that it had been the perfect plan. As soon as I realized that Bella was Jazz's true mate and that she could take him from me...I devised my plan. Edward said that her blood smelled different than others and I instantly knew...she was his singer. After he came back from a week in Alaska, I convinced him that I'd had a vision where Bella was his mate and I'd seen her as one of us, he started trying to get close to her. Things were going fine. Edward was entranced by Bella and I was keeping Jazz away from Bella. It was perfect. At least until that day in the clearing. Esme had encouraged Edward to invite Bella to our baseball game, under the pretense that we cheat. I wasn't happy about this. It meant that Bella and Jazz would be near each other. And then the Nomads appeared. Stupid James had to become obsessed with stupid Bella as well. Fortunately, I could block the majority of my thoughts from Edward. When we arrived back at the house, Edward tells us that he's gonna have to get Bella out of town in order to protect her. Against my better judgement I offer for Jazz and I to take her south. Edward wasn't happy but agreed.
Of course things couldn't be easy. Bella had to try and be the sacrificial lamb. James had lured her away from Jazz and I making her think that he had her mom. I had to admit it was a great ruse. So naturally we all go running after her. I had to agree with Rose though...we shouldn't have to be the ones protecting her. With Rose and Esme back in Forks, keeping an eye on Bella's father, making sure that the other two didn't go after him…It was up to the rest of us to try and save Bella. I mean, either way it was gonna happen. I hadn't lied to Edward about that. The only part that I'd lied about was the fact that it wasn't Edward I'd seen her with…it was Jazz.
After we'd managed to get rid of James and burn all of his body parts, we'd taken Bella to the nearest hospital and then Jazz and I headed back to Forks. Carlisle was going to call her parents with some cover story. Edward was planning on convincing her to go to Jacksonville with her mother. I knew that it wouldn't work. She'd already begun to feel the pull towards Jazz. I knew that I had to do something.
When everyone arrived back in Forks, Edward told me that he'd somehow managed to convince Bella to go to prom. Well, I couldn't exactly let her go wearing anything she owned, so I helped out. She was my own personal barbie doll.
When school let out for the summer, I knew that I'd have to devise a new plan. I needed something that was going to push Bella away from Edward. I knew that it was unlikely but I had to take a chance. My back up plan however was I was gonna make sure that Edward would push Bella away. Especially if she was collateral damage. By the time that school started back and Bella's birthday was approaching I had my plan all in place. And…I'd been very careful to block my thoughts from Edward. He couldn't know everything. Not yet.
The day of Bella's birthday had arrived and everything was ready. I had the presents wrapped perfectly tight. There was no way that my plan could fail. I'd given Bella the dress that I'd wrapped for her at school, and Jazz had managed to manipulate her emotions so that she agreed to the party that I'd planned. I would give her the presents fairly early in the evening and then things would progress from there. The best part of all was that I'd pictured several outcomes happening.
When Edward had arrived with Bella, we'd shooed them upstairs while we finished setting everything up. We could hear them upstairs in Carlisle's study. He was explaining about the Volturi to her. Stupid Edward. When everything was ready, I went to get them, pulling Bella downstairs behind me. I immediately started handing her presents. The stereo system from Emmett, she'd unwrapped carefully. As she did the bracelet from Rose. It wasn't until she went to open the plane tickets from Carlisle and Esme that everything happened. She ended up with a paper cut. Everything from there happened so quick. A drop of blood hit the floor. He turned to look at Jazz. He must have heard something in Jazz's mind because then he turned to Bella and pushed her back into the glass table making it shatter. Therefore a tiny papercut turned into glass all in her arm. Jazz went to lunge for her and Edward tried to push him back. It was only when everyone realized how much blood there was that we all started clearing out of the room.
Poor Jazz. He'd felt so ashamed of himself that he ran all the way to Alaska. Emmett and I had followed him trying to get him to calm down. When that didn't work, Emmett agreed to go hunting with him while I headed back to Forks to check on the rest of the family. I knew that I had a great plan but I couldn't have planned this better if I'd tried.
When I got back to the house, Esme was already cleaning up the glass and bleaching the carpet with Rose helping her. As soon as I'd entered the room, Rose turned on me. "You and your stupid parties!" Rose growled at me.
"How is this my fault?" I asked, deigning innocence.
"You just couldn't leave well enough alone. You never should have encouraged Edward to pursue her. We should have left as soon as he realized that she was his singer." Rose growled.
"You can't really expect him to stay away from her, can you? She's his mate." I told her.
"You don't know that! She's his singer. We don't know that she's his mate. And now, because of your little party…he's feeling guilty." Rose said.
"What are you talking about?" I asked Rose.
"I've known Edward a long time Alice. I was the fourth member of this family. I know when he's feeling guilty." Rose said.
I narrowed my eyes at her. She didn't know anything. She knew nothing about the lengths that I would go to in order to protect those that I cared about. That included Jazz and Edward.
Rose and I were glaring at each other when we heard Edward's voice. "Enough!" He growled causing both of us to face him. "Carlisle and I have decided. Start packing we're leaving. You all will head to Alaska while Carlisle and I finish up things here. Then we'll join you." Edward told us.
Rose and I straightened our posture and looked at Edward. "What about Bella?" I asked him.
He shook his head. "It's done. Rose is right. It's not safe to be around her. We need to leave before she gets hurt worse than she already has." Edward said. I went to stop him but he cut we off. "Just let it be, Alice." He said before heading to his room.
It wasn't until two months later, that I realized that things weren't getting better with Jazz. I mean, sure, he'd gone back to his animal diet but…he wasn't happy. I knew that it was the pull to be near Bella. I'd seen it when in Rose when Emmett was gone too long hunting. I knew that I wouldn't be able to keep Jazz with me much longer.
It was a week later, when everything came to a head. Jazz and the rest of the family (minus Edward) had cornered me. They'd figured out exactly why Jazz wasn't happy. I had to confess that Jazz wasn't my true mate. I admitted to them that I'd set up Bella's birthday party so that she'd get a papercut. They were pissed at me. Jasper and Carlisle the most. Jasper looked murderous. It took no time before he had me pinned against the wall and growling in my face. "Why? Why did you keep me from her? Was it just some sick game to make yourself feel better?"
I narrowed my eyes at him. "Because she would have taken you away from me. I'm the one that found you after you escaped Maria. I'm the one that helped you find yourself again after the years of torment that she put you through. You should have been my mate…not hers." I growled back.
Jasper managed to rip my arm off before he stormed upstairs and started packing his things.
The last thing that he said to me before he left was that I was lucky that he wasn't turning me over to the Volturi for coming between mates. But he also knew deep down that if he did that they would have known about Bella.
It was another couple of weeks before any of us had heard from Edward. He'd called in to do his monthly check-in and Carlisle had informed him of everything that had gone on since we'd left Forks. When he'd found out about my scheme he'd immediately asked Carlisle to put me on the phone. When I answered, Edward was pissed as well. Just like Jasper, he'd started questioning me about why I did it. I finally had to tell him the truth about the visions that I'd seen…thus informing the family as well. Yes, I'd had visions of Bella and Jasper but that wasn't all. The biggest one had been the fact that I knew who Edward's mate was. When he'd questioned me about who it was, I hesitated before I told him that it was…me.
