It was an accident. A simple wrong place at the wrong time accident, but the consequences were to shift the trajectory of a young man's life forever.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was awoken how he always had, by his black cat, Toothless, gently pawing at his chin. The boy's green eyes met the feline's and he immediately gave the cat a lopsided smile, the cat kept slapping his chin in response. Hiccup didn't make any moves to get up, simply enjoying the sight of his best friend continuously slap him, until Toothless let out an annoyed meow.

"Alright, bud. Im getting up, I'm getting up!" The boy stated as he yawned, rubbing his eyes and sitting up. "Come on, bud."

Hiccup stood up from his bed, yawning once more and stretch his limbs before he patted his shoulder. The small cat quickly leaped onto the boy's sleeping shirt and climbed his way up to rest on Hiccup's shoulder, akin to a gargoyle perched upon a cathedral. The two made their way down stairs and into the kitchen, the aroma of coffee, pancakes, eggs and bacon reaching his nose. Smiling he pushed the door open and was met with his father, Stoick "The Vast" Haddock, humming a familiar song and making an omelet.

"Morning dad, what are ya singing?" Hiccup asked as he took one of the two chairs at the dining table.

"Was an old Viking marriage song." Stoick explained, turning and smiling at his son, "I sung it to yer mother, was I how I proposed, in fact!"

Hiccup joined his father's side and began rummaging through the cupboards looking for canned mashed tuna and cod. Toothless was true to his namesake as the cat was born completely toothless, because of this he was unwanted by most. But after a month of saving up his allowance Hiccup went to the shelter and immediately bought the young feline and the two formed a very strong bond. Two halves of a complete idiot.

"Alvin and Oswald are coming over tonight to play cards, so if you and yer cat wanna get lost in the town again, I understand." Stoick stated as he set the table, watching his his feed his cat.

The large man gave himself a large omelette with hot sauce and bacon, as well as a large cup of coffee. Hiccup was given a plate with a small stack of pancakes, hash browns and a glass of milk. Hiccup have Toothless his bowl of fish mush before taking his seat at the table with his father.

"Eh, Dagur and Heather have been asking me to hang out more, so I guess I'll join them." Hiccup told his father as he dug into his meal.

"As long as you socialize, but make sure you keep Dagur's ideas under lock and key. The last time you came home from Dagur's company you were drunker than a sailor!" Stoick stated as he lifted his mug in the direction of his son.

"I told you that wasn't my fault dad! If I knew Dagur was spiking my drinks, I'd have just stuck to water!" Hiccup stated trying to defend himself. "Besides I-."

Hiccup was interrupted by a shrill alarm on his father's silver wristwatch, the scrawny boy let out a sigh before taking a quick swig of his drink and rushing upstairs. Stoick watched him come down about half an hour later dressed in a green ,too-big, long sleeve band shirt—the shirt used to belong to Stoick himself when he was barely a father, but he outgrew it. Hiccup found it one day and decided to keep it for himself—dark blue, ripped jeans and leather boots. His auburn hair still damp from his shower.

"I gotta get going before I'm late, love you dad!" Hiccup stated as he rushed to get his backpack on, filling it with books, a binder and his lunch. Hiccup kept it unzipped for a moment longer before Toothless jumped inside.

"Love you too, son!" Stoick called as Hiccup rushed out the door.

The sun tried to shine over the town of Bewilderbeast Mountain, but was blocked by the many clouds in the sky, a sign of winter's fast approach. Hiccup quickly made his way to the shed on the side of his house, grabbing his faux-fur vest and unlocking his bike. Hiccup mounted his sleek, black bike before peeling down his driveway and riding the asphalt to his high school. The scrawny boy felt Toothless wiggle around inside his backpack, the cat was used to the fast and bumpy ride, but that didn't mean he enjoyed it.

Toothless would never leave Hiccup's side, absolutely refusing to do so, no matter what. So after the first month of his new life in a loving home, summer ended and Hiccup had to go back to school, but the cat was stubborn and boar-headed and decided to climb into Hiccup's backpack one day. It wasnt until later in his homeroom did Hiccup discover what his cat had done and even later before the school staff decided that yelling at Hiccup every morning was not worth it, so reluctantly and slowly Toothless was aloud in school.

Hiccup glanced a peek over his shoulder, seeing Toothless' head and paws peeking out of the partially zipped bag. A chuckle escaped his throat and before he knew it, he was peddling up the driveway of Bewilderbeast High. Hiccup guided his sleek bike over to the school's communal bike rack and locked up his second prized possesion. A loud laugh rang out behind him and Hiccup quickly turned to be greeted by a brawny man with spiky red hair and a five o'clock shadow.

"Brother!"
