Chapter One: Great Expectations
"It is an honor to meet you, Princess, my name is Neji Hyuuga and we will be attending some classes together from today onwards."
That was the first time she met him, the young boy stood in front of her introducing himself to both herself and her parents whom she nervously stood between. He had lowered his head as a sign of respect to the royal family but as he lifted his head to look at her parents she noticed his delicate, youthful features. His eyes darted down to hers and she looked away embarrassed to have been caught.
"Thank you Neji we hope having you here will be of benefit to both of us."
She looked back at him again, looking anywhere but his pale eyes, noticing how the clothes he wore fell just before the tips of his fingers and they had not a single stain or wrinkle on them, unlike his body which was littered with small scratches and messily wrapped hair that fell past his chin rippling across his back. He looked out of place with his clothes, as if they did not belong. As if he did not belong.
"As you must know this is our daughter and your Princess." Her mother's head turns to look at her. "Now darling, introduce yourself to the boy."
The Queen's eyes were smiling but she could tell she was watching carefully for any faults in her movement. The young Princess turned to face the boy, his body towering over her smaller one, his eyes were expectant. She lowered her head and looked at his shoes which were completely incompatible with the rest of his clothes. They were grubby and bursting at the seams, despite how they were cleaned it was not hard to notice that these shoes were just as out of place as the boy himself.
"It is a pleasure to meet you, I am the Princess of Kumogakure Tenten Lee, and I look forward to learning alongside you."
She raised her head to meet his eyes once more and thought how she liked how they looked. Full of hope and determination. Neji's eyes softened as she spoke, and a small, respectful smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. He seemed to appreciate her effort to meet his gaze, and the sincerity in her voice.
"The pleasure is mine, Princess Tenten," he replied, bowing slightly again. "I look forward to our studies and the opportunity to learn from you."
As the formal introductions concluded, her parents exchanged a small glance, signaling the end of the encounter. Her mother gently placed a hand on her shoulder, guiding her away. "Come now, darling," her mother said softly. "We have much to prepare for." Tenten glanced back at Neji as she walked away, his figure becoming smaller with each step. There was something about him that intrigued her, something beyond his mismatched attire and humble demeanor. She couldn't quite place it, but she knew their paths crossing was no mere coincidence.
As they made their way to the palace, her father spoke in a low, reassuring tone. "He seems like a good lad, hardworking and respectful. A worthy companion for your studies."
Tenten nodded absently, her mind still on Neji. She wondered about his life and the stories behind those scratches and worn shoes. Her curiosity grew, and with it, a desire to understand him better.

The sun had barely risen over the peaks of Kumogakure when Tenten started her day. As always she was awoken by her maid-in-waiting, being both bathed and dressed as she was every morning. As she ate a plated breakfast that was brought to her room she was told what her day would bring, and Tenten became exited about the notion of finally having another person to closely spend her days with. She moved quietly through the palace, the halls echoing softly with her footsteps. Her mind was already occupied with thoughts of Neji. Despite their only encounter being short she was excited at the prospect of having someone to spend her time with within the castle, after all being the only young royal there was a lonely fate after a while.
She had only met the royal siblings of Sunagakure once and they did not seem that interested in talking to her because they had one another, Lord A would bring his children to the palace occasionally but they could never get over the difference in status to make their relationship work.
She hoped things would be different with Neji though as she wandered into her first class of the day she was surprised to see she was studying alone with her tutor again.
"Master Iruka, was the new boy not meant to be joining today?" She asked trying to keep the disappointment out of her voice though it seemed she had been unsuccessful when her teacher gave her a somber look replying,
"He was indeed though the Queen had other wishes for him today so it will just be us again, is that okay?"
She nodded softly before joining him at the large desk at the front of the room.

In another part of the palace, Neji stood in the Queen's private chambers. The room was grand and ornate, filled with rich tapestries and elegant furniture. The Queen sat in a high-backed chair, her regal presence commanding respect. The young boy stood nervously in front of the Queen, being in an unfamiliar place alone was new to him and he was afraid to admit that he felt uncomfortable.
"Neji," she began, her tone both kind and authoritative, "I understand that this all must be hard for you, leaving your family at such a young age but I hope you understand that a greater life lies for you here and that you have responsibilities."
Neji bowed his head slightly, showing his respect. "I am at your service, Your Majesty."
The Queen studied him for a moment, her eyes giving no signs of warmth behind them. "You are not being taken in without reason," she continued. "You have a duty to your new home, Kumogakure. You must understand that your skills and talents are vital to us."
Neji straightened, his eyes reflecting his determination. "I will do whatever is required to serve and protect the kingdom, Your Majesty."
The Queen nodded, satisfied with his response. "Good. Your loyalty and dedication will not go unrewarded. But there is something you must understand. Your role here goes beyond training as a soldier and being on the council. You have a special responsibility."
Neji listened intently, sensing the gravity of her words.
"Princess Tenten is the future of this kingdom," the Queen said, her voice firm. "She is young, and while she is strong and capable, she needs protection. You must be her shield, Neji. You must protect her with your life."
Neji felt a weight settle on his shoulders, but he also felt a sense of honor. "I will protect her, Your Majesty. I will ensure no harm comes to her."
The Queen's gaze softened slightly, though her tone remained serious. "This is not just about physical protection, Neji. You must also support her emotionally and mentally. She is often alone, and she needs someone she can trust, someone who understands the burdens of the role she will play in this kingdom's future."
Neji nodded, understanding the full scope of his duty. "I will be that person for her, Your Majesty."
The Queen's eyes seemed to pierce through him, assessing his resolve. "I believe you will. Remember, Neji, this kingdom is now your home. Its people are your people. And Princess Tenten is your most important duty."
Neji bowed deeply. "Thank you, Your Majesty. I will not let you down."
As he left the Queen's chambers, Neji felt a renewed sense of purpose. He was determined to fulfill his duties, not only to the kingdom but also to The Princess. He would protect her, support her, and be the ally she needed. The future of Kumogakure rested on his shoulders, and he was ready to carry that weight.

The Great Hall of Kumogakure was unusually quiet, its vast space amplifying the silence that hung in the air. The long, wooden tables that typically accommodated numerous guests were now mostly empty. Only two places were set, one for Princess Tenten and the other for Neji Hyuuga. The chandeliers cast a soft, golden light, creating an atmosphere that was both serene and slightly eerie.
Tenten sat in the unfamiliar place, all her meals being held in either her room or her family's private dining space. Though after asking the maids where Neji would be dining tonight she felt a strange surge of courage to join him. In front of her was a plate of delicately prepared food. Her mind wandered as she picked at her meal, her thoughts inevitably drifting toward the boy sitting across the hall. Neji was seated at a table a few yards away, his posture impeccably straight, his focus seemingly on the food before him.
The few servants present moved discreetly along the walls, their presence almost ghostly as they awaited any command from the young princess or Neji. The air was filled with a tension that neither of them could quite place.
Tenten's gaze traveled to Neji, observing him quietly. His features were calm and composed, his eyes sharp and attentive even in the tranquility of the moment. Despite his composed exterior, Tenten sensed an undercurrent of nervousness and unfamiliarity, something that resonated deeply with her own experiences.
As if drawn by her stare, Neji looked up. Their eyes met across the silent hall, locking in a moment of unspoken connection. Tenten's breath caught slightly, her heart beating just a bit faster. She saw a flicker of something in his pale eyes, a mixture of understanding and solidarity.
Tenten turned her attention back to her own plate, feeling her face warm up from the extended eye contact. She snuck a glance at him through her overhanging bangs only to see that his attention was back on his own food. Feeling disappointed she kicked her feet playfully under the table barely grazing the ground, wondering how she could get his attention again.
She pondered for a moment, her mind racing with ideas. Taking a deep breath she steeled herself, Tenten decided to take a small step forward. She picked up her glass of water and carefully stood up, making her way towards Neji's table.
The silence in the hall made her footsteps sound louder than they were, each one echoing slightly against the walls.
As she approached, Neji looked up, his expression curious but still composed. Tenten stopped a few steps away from him, hesitating for a brief second before she spoke.
"Neji," she began, trying to keep her voice steady, "Would you mind if I joined you?"
Neji's eyes softened, and he nodded slightly. "Not at all please, Princess. Please, have a seat." His voice held a lilt of desperation in it which only caused her heart to race and swell more. She smiled grateful for his warm response, and took a seat opposite him.
The table was large, but the distance between them felt more manageable now. She placed her glass down and looked at him, feeling a bit more confident. "I hope I'm not interrupting your meal," she said softly, glancing at his plate.
Neji shook his head. "Not at all. It's an honor to have you join me."
They sat in silence for a moment, the awkwardness slowly dissipating. Tenten's hand circled the rim of her glass, trying to think of something to say. Neji seemed content to eat in silence, but she wanted to know more about him.
"I was wondering," she began tentatively, "Where did you learn to be so composed? I mean, you seem very disciplined."
Neji looked up from his plate, a hint of a smile playing at the corners of his mouth. "You say as such but you also seem very put together for someone so young." She only blushed not knowing how to respond to such a genuine compliment from the young boy.
"Well I am the Princess it is to be expected, my mother would be disappointed if I were to behave anyway else." She admitted, her voice was more earnest than she intended it to come out sounding.
They both stayed in compatible silence before Neji spoke, "I have been trained from a young age, Princess. Discipline and composure are important in the Hyuuga clan."
Tenten nodded, intrigued. "That sounds challenging. Do you miss your family?"
Neji's expression grew more serious. "No. My place is here, Konohagakure is not somewhere I wish to return to."
Tenten felt a pang in her heart unsure of how to respond to such an honest and bitter answer. She hesitated for a moment before apologising, "I'm sorry…"
Neji's eyes softened further, his gaze steady on hers. "Do not be Princess It is the truth, and I have accepted it. My duty is here now."
She nodded, still feeling the weight of his words. "It must be difficult to carry such a burden."
Neji looked down at his plate for a moment before meeting her gaze again. "We all have burdens to bear. Yours is no lighter than mine. But it is how we carry them that defines us." He picked up his glass averting his eyes from Tenten's as he took a sip.
"Neji," she began softly, "what do you hope to achieve here in Kumogakure?"
Neji thought for a moment before answering. "I hope to serve the kingdom well and protect those who need it. But more than that, I want to find my place here, to feel that I truly belong."
Tenten nodded, understanding his sentiment. "Well I hope I can help you achieve this goal of yours, this is your home now."
Neji looked at her, his eyes reflecting a depth of gratitude. "Thank you, Princess."
Silence descended upon the conversation though, this time, without any of the uncomfortable undertones it carried in the beginning.
