The night was quiet, the stars barely twinkling in the sky as Caelus lay on the grassy hill outside Belobog. He had been exploring the city with his companions all day and now craved some peace and quiet. He sighed contentedly, eyes closed, letting the cool breeze wash over him. Everything seemed so peaceful... until he felt a weight on his chest.
"Caelus... you're not falling asleep, are you?"
He opened one eye and saw Firefly sitting on top of him, legs crossed and arms folded across her chest. Her tiny wings fluttered in the moonlight, giving her an ethereal glow that didn't match her usual sass.
"I was trying to get some rest,"Caelus replied, giving her a crooked smile. "What are you doing?"
Firefly leaned closer and narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "You look a little too comfortable for someone who's supposed to be on a mission. You'd better not relax just because everything's quiet tonight."
Caelus chuckled, feeling her warmth hovering over him. "Aren't you supposed to be keeping an eye on everything too? And yet here you are, getting cozy on top of me."
Firefly puffed out her cheeks in an exaggerated pout, clearly not amused by his teasing. "I'm doing my job! It's just... I'm multitasking."
"Right,"Caelus said with a smirk. "And part of your job is to sit on me?"
Firefly tapped him on the forehead with a tiny finger, which made him wince. "Hey! You should thank me for sticking around to keep you awake."
"Keeping me awake? Sitting on my chest like I'm a fluffy paperweight?"
She crossed her arms again, her wings fluttering more aggressively this time. "If you think I'm fluffy, I'll show you how 'fluffy' I can be."After that, she tapped him on the nose, her expression all too pleased with herself.
Caelus couldn't help but laugh, grabbed her small body between his fingers and lifted her into the air."Be careful, or I might throw you into the bushes."
Firefly's wings buzzed furiously as she twisted in his grip. "You wouldn't dare!"Her voice held a mixture of indignation and playful menace.
"You wouldn't?"Caelus raised an eyebrow and his lips curved upward. He gestured as if he was going to throw it, but Firefly immediately grabbed his thumb, wide-eyed and feigning fear.
"No! Don't throw Firefly!"
Caelus laughed again and deposited her gently on his chest. She folded her arms and snorted as if she hadn't had to rush to avoid being thrown.
After a few seconds of silence, Firefly relaxed and the irritation disappeared from her face. She let out a soft sigh and leaned back against Caelus' chest, mimicking his posture. They both stared up at the night sky, their wings still glowing faintly beside them.
"You know,"Caelus said, breaking the silence, "It's nice having you around. You're like my personal light source."
Firefly looked sideways at him, trying to hide her smile. "You'd be lost without me."
"I wouldn't go that far,"Caelus replied with a grin, "but you make the trip so much more... lively."
Firefly turned her head and stared at him; her wings slowed to a soft hum. There was something soft in her gaze, a flash of emotion that caught Caelus off guard. "You're not so bad yourself,"he said, his voice quiet, almost shy. "For a big jerk."
Caelus pretended to be hurt. "Hey, who are you calling an idiot? I saved you from those crazy wind currents last week, remember?"
Firefly rolled his eyes, but his smile remained intact. "Right. I guess you're decent when you're not annoying."
After that, they lapsed into a comfortable silence, as the gentle hum of the wind filled the space between them. Firefly's small body rested on Caelus' chest, and he couldn't help but feel a warmth spreading throughout his body. The quiet companionship, the teasing... it all felt... good. As if this little firefly had somehow become an irreplaceable part of his journey.
Caelus let out a soft chuckle. "You know, if anyone saw us like this, they'd probably think I was crazy, talking to a glowing insect on my chest."
Firefly elbowed him in the side. "First of all, I'm not a bug, I'm a Firefly, there's a difference. And secondly, you should feel lucky to have me."
"I am lucky,"Caelus said, surprising even himself at how sincere he sounded.
Firefly looked at him blinking and his wings fluttered a little faster. She turned around and pretended to be interested in the sky again. "Well... well. You'd better remember that."
Caelus smiled and felt a sense of peace wash over him. Perhaps the journey ahead of him would be long and full of unknowns, but now, with Firefly glowing softly at his side, everything seemed a little easier. And maybe, just maybe, he would let her win a shooting contest now and then.
