Healing the Past

--

Setting: Tsunade's Office

The room is quiet, filled with the soft afternoon light filtering through the windows. Tsunade sits behind her desk, her eyes focused on the troubled couple before her. Shikamaru and Temari, both visibly tense, sit on the chairs facing her.

Tsunade: "Let's start with why you two split up in the first place. Shikamaru, you go first."

Shikamaru takes a deep breath, avoiding Temari's gaze initially.

Shikamaru: "I thought Temari deserved someone better than me. I convinced myself that I wasn't worthy of her—of the love she gave, her strength. I... I thought I was holding her back."

Temari listens, her expression a mixture of anger and sadness. Tsunade nods, then turns to her next.

Tsunade: "And Temari, what was your perspective?"

Temari's eyes flash with a mix of frustration and hurt.

Temari: "I believed Shikamaru was unhappy with me and Shikadai. He kept dreaming of someone who wasn't as 'nagging' as I was—his words. . I was right, wasn't I? You married someone else within months of our official separation. I felt like you couldn't wait to be rid of me."

Shikamaru's face contorts with pain and disbelief. "I have *ever* only dreamed about you, Temari. I might have said I wanted an average wife, but I loved only you and wanted only you. Yua was never a replacement for you. She was just a way to fill the void that you left."

Temari's face turned red with a mix of frustration and sorrow. "How could you think you weren't worth of me, Shikamaru? I've always believed in you. You're the kindest, most thoughtful man I know. I gave up everything—my village, my life in Suna—to be with you. And you still thought you weren't good enough?"

Shikamaru felt a lump forming in his throat. He had never seen Temari this emotional, this raw. His own barriers began to crumble. "I never wanted you to feel like you had to give up everything for me. That was never my intention. I... I thought I was protecting you by stepping back."

Temari's voice shook. "And I thought I was holding you back. I was constantly nagging, criticizing... I thought you deserved someone who would be easier to be with. But seeing you marry so quickly, it broke me. I felt like a fool for ever thinking you loved me."

The silence stretches as the weight of their misunderstandings fills the space. The harsh truth is revealing itself through the hurt and regrets spoken aloud for the first time.

Shikamaru: (voice breaking) "I thought I was doing the right thing. I see now how wrong I was, how I let my own insecurities destroy us."

As the words hung in the air, the weight of the years they had wasted became almost unbearable. Shikamaru looked down, feeling the sting of his mistakes. "All this time, I was trying to convince myself that I was doing the right thing by letting you go. I thought you'd be happier..."

Temari interrupted, her eyes wet with unshed tears. "And I convinced myself that you didn't want me—that you were forced to be with me. But the truth is, Shikamaru, I've never stopped loving you. Not for a single day."

Shikamaru's heart felt like it was breaking all over again. "I loved you then, and I still love you now. Every cloud I watched, every strategy I planned... everything reminded me of you."

Tsunade took a deep breath, sensing the gravity of the moment. "You both need to acknowledge these feelings and understand that the past is unchangeable. But reconciliation involves confronting these emotions. You've both been carrying the burden of this misunderstanding for too long.

Temari wipes away a tear, shaking her head.

Temari: "Years... we wasted years apart, chasing shadows and making mistakes. We hurt each other so badly because we misunderstood."

Tsunade:(softly) "What matters now is understanding these feelings and moving forward. You've both made mistakes, but it's not too late to heal if you're willing."

Shikamaru reaches out, his hand trembling as it finds Temari's.

Shikamaru: "I want to make it right, Temari. I want to build the future we always talked about."

Temari squeezes his hand, a hesitant but hopeful smile on her lips.

Temari: "We'll have to rebuild trust, understand each other again. But... I think we can."

Tsunade watches them, nodding approvingly. The journey isn't over yet, but the first steps have been taken.

.

Tsunade: "Let's continue. Why did you choose your previous partners?"

Temari lets out a bitter laugh, and Shikamaru turns to her, his face shadowed with a mix of guilt and regret.

Temari: "I didn't have a partner. After the divorce, I didn't want to be with anyone else. I never felt in love again. I focused on Shikadai and my work. There was... one person, but it was more out of shared loneliness than anything meaningful. It started because of alcohol, and we were both struggling with being too difficult for our previous partners."

The room is silent for a moment as Shikamaru processes her words, feeling the weight of his actions even more.

Tsunade: "Shikamaru, what about you and Yua?"

Shikamaru's eyes get a distant look as he dives into his recollections, tinged with pain and wistfulness.

Shikamaru: "After the divorce, I started drinking. I was trying to forget her—trying to forget you, Temari. Then, Yua came into my life. At first, she was just a way to feel numb, to pretend I could move on. But... it all happened too fast. She got pregnant within the first month, and the rest just followed like a blur."

Temari's eyes well up, her voice trembling as she tries to hold back tears.

Temari: "It was so easy for you to get rid of me and to be happy with someone else. How can you say you loved me when you literally started a family with someone else within months of our separation?"

Shikamaru responds, his own voice shaking as the guilt threatens to break him.

Shikamaru: "I didn't plan it, Temari. It just happened. I was so broken, and I needed someone—anyone—to feel grounded. I see now how it must have looked, how deeply it must have hurt you. I was lost."

Temari wipes her tears furiously, her anger bubbling to the surface.

Temari: "You gave up your job for them—the job that kept you away from us! You were never home for me or Shikadai. Even when you were, you were always tired, reckless, and you'd get me so mad. And yet, you changed everything for her and them!"

Shikamaru breaks down, the weight of his choices crushing him in this moment of truth.

Shikamaru: "I know, Temari. If only I'd given up the job for you—if only I'd waited a little longer, fought for us—I could still have been with you. It's unforgivable that I didn't try to change then."

The room is steeped in a heart-wrenching silence as they look at each other, the depth of their pain laid bare.

Tsunade: (softly) "Regret is a powerful emotion, but realization is the first step towards healing. The important thing now is how you choose to move forward with this understanding."

Temari takes a deep breath, her eyes meeting Shikamaru's, filled with the complex mixture of love, pain, and a fragile hope.

Temari: "We can't undo the past, Shikamaru. But if we're going to move forward, we have to start with forgiveness—learning to forgive each other and ourselves."

Shikamaru grips her hand, his voice a hushed whisper.

Shikamaru: "I want to try, Temari. For us, for Shikadai... for everything we've lost and want to reclaim."

Tsunade nods, satisfied with the progress despite the raw edges of their conversation.

Tsunade: "We'll continue these sessions. Healing takes time, but every step, every tear, every honest word is a movement towards rebuilding. Are you both ready to commit to this journey?"

They both nod, a semblance of determination in their eyes.

Together: "Yes."

As they leave Tsunade's office, their hands clasped tightly together, they know the road ahead is still long and fraught with challenges. But for the first time in a long while, they're ready to face it—together.

The night is still and quiet. The struggles and revelations of the day have left Shikamaru and Temari emotionally exhausted but unable to find rest.

They sit on the edge of their bed, the room dimly lit by the soft glow of a bedside lamp. Shikamaru turns to Temari, his face shadowed with remorse. He pulls her into a tight embrace, his voice a hoarse whisper.

Shikamaru: "Temari, please… forgive me. It's all my fault that I gave up on us and moved on so fast back then. I don't deserve you. I'll understand if you don't want to marry me again."

Temari's tears flow freely, her body trembling against him as she tries to voice her own pain.

Temari: "We lost so many years, and so many things got complicated. You shared your life with someone else. Do you... do you want to live without me?"

Shikamaru's heart aches at her words. He starts kissing her tears away, his grip tightening as if afraid to lose her again.

Shikamaru: "I love you, Temari. I don't deserve you, but I can't live without you. I can't believe how stupid I was. Please, Temari, forgive me."

They cling to each other, their foreheads pressed together as their breaths mingle, sharing the same air. Shikamaru's voice breaks into sobs, each word a desperate plea.

Shikamaru: "Please… forgive me…"

Temari meets his gaze with tear-filled eyes, her guard finally crumbling. She kisses him, their lips meeting with a desperate need for comfort, reconciliation, and understanding. The kiss deepens, their sobs mingling as they pour out years of regret and unspoken apologies.

They make love, their bodies moving together with a raw intensity, each touch and kiss a silent promise to mend what's been broken. They remain glued to each other, breathing the same air, immersing themselves in a world where only they exist. Their foreheads remain pressed together, their tears mingling as they find solace in each other's presence.

The room is filled with whispered confessions and heartfelt apologies, their sobs turning into soft gasps of relief. As they hold each other, their emotional wounds begin to heal.

Shikamaru:(whispering as he holds her close) "I love you, Temari. I'll never let you go again."

They fall asleep, still intertwined, finding a sense of peace they've long been searching for. The night wraps them in a cocoon of shared warmth and love, their breaths in sync as they begin to heal together.
