Chapter 6

New Companion

"Citizens rejoice. Your lord and master stands on high, playing track three." The Master entered the fight deck and started to dance to I Can't Decide by the Scissor Sisters. He walked up and kissed Chase on the lips. He began to dance with her.

Chase let out a happy laugh as they danced.

Francine began to pour some tea for the two of them.

The Master allowed Chase to sit down and he rang a ship bell and watched the Doctor crawl out of his straw-strewn tent. The Master forces him into a wheelchair and takes him for a push around the deck. "It's ready to rise, Doctor. The new Time Lord Empire. It's good, isn't it? Isn't it good? Anything? No? Anything? Oh, but they broke your hearts, didn't they, those Toclafane, ever since you worked out what they really are. They say Martha Jones has come back home. Now why would she do that?" He questioned as he looked at the Doctor.

"Leave her alone." The Doctor growled out wanting to protect Martha from him.

"But you said something to her, didn't you? On the day I took control. What did you tell her?"

"I have one thing to say to you. You know what it is."

"Oh no, you don't!" He said as he pushed the Doctor's wheelchair away.

"Valiant is now entering Zone One airspace. Citizens rejoice." Tannoy said.

"Come on, people! What are we doing? Launch Day in twenty four hours."

Chase looked over at the Doctor and saw that he held three fingers against his thigh, not even realizing that it was a code to the others that were around them.

DWDWDW

Chase looked from where she sat from the book that she had been reading. She watched her husband coming onto the deck.

"Time for my massage. Who shall I have today? Tanya. Come on, sweetheart. Chase, have you met Tanya? She's gorgeous. Tanya, when we go to the stars, I'm going to take you to the Catriga Nova. Whirlpools of gold."

Chase scoffed, rolling her eyes.

"You two should get to know each other. That might be fun."

Tanya massaged the Master's shoulders.

"Condition red." Tannoy said.

"What the hell?"

Chase got up to her feet, her brows furrowed.

"Repeat, condition red."

Chase watched Francine throw the Master's jacket to Tish, who in turn gave it to the Doctor who took his screwdriver from the pocket and pointed it at the Master.

"Oh, I see."

"I told you. I have one thing to say."

The Master began to laugh.

The Doctor messed with his laser screwdriver and couldn't get it to work.

"Isomorphic controls." The master said as he took the screwdriver from the Doctor and punched him. "Which means they only work for me. Like this."

Suddenly a laser beam just missed Francine.

"Say sorry!"

"Sorry. Sorry. Sorry." Francine said pleading.

"Mum!" Tish said moving towards her mother.

"Didn't you learn anything from the blessed Saint Martha? Siding with the Doctor is a very dangerous thing to do. Take them away."

"Move. Come on." The Guard ordered.

"Okay. Gotcha." The Master then helped the Doctor into a chair as Tish and Francine were taken away. "Oh boy. There you go, Gramps. Oh, do you know, I remember the days when the Doctor, oh, that famous Doctor, was waging a Time War, battling Sea Devils and Axons. He sealed the rift at the Medusa Cascade single handed. And look at him now. Stealing screwdrivers. How did he ever come to this? Oh yeah, me."

Chase came over to the Master slowly as he pulled her close to his body.

"I just need you to listen." The Doctor pleaded.

"No, it's my turn. Revenge! Best served hot. And this time, it's a message for Miss Jones."

Chase looked down at the Doctor worry flitting across her face before switching to a non emotional state.

DWDWDW

"My people. Salutations on this, the eve of war. Lovely woman. But I know there's all sorts of whispers down there. Stories of a child, walking the Earth, giving you hope. But I ask you. How much hope has this man got? Say hello, Gandalf. Except he's not that old, but he's an alien with a much greater lifespan than you stunted little apes. But what if it showed? What if I suspend your capacity to regenerate? All nine hundred years of your life, Doctor. What if we could see them?" The Master questioned as he returned the screwdriver and zapped the Doctor again. "Older and older and older. Down you go, Doctor. Down, down, down the years."

The convulsion ended and the Doctor is no longer sitting in the chair.

"Doctor."

A tiny creature with big eyes, rather Gollum-like, peered out from the empty clothing.

"Received and understood, Miss Jones?"

Chase looked over with a sad look, her cheeks paling as she looked at the Doctor. She hadn't expected that her husband would do such a thing to a man that she hardly knew.

DWDWDW

Chase paced around back and forth, her arms crossed over the red dress she wore. Her brain reeling trying to remember who she was to everyone that her husband had imprisoned. Her hand went through her hair as she breathed through her nose in irritation. She looked over at her husband out of the corner of her eyes to hear him gloating about everything.

"Tomorrow, they launch. We're opening up a rift in the Braccatolian space. They won't see us coming. It's kind of scary."

"Then stop." The Doctor said, looking up at the Master.

"Once the Empire is established, and there's a new Gallifrey in the heavens, maybe then it stops. The drumming. The never ending drumbeat. Ever since I was a child. I looked into the vortex. That's when it chose me. The drumming, the call to war. Can't you hear it? Listen, it's there now. Right now. Tell me you can hear it, Doctor. Tell me."

"It's only you."

"Good."

A sphere entered the room. "Tomorrow, the war. Tomorrow we rise, never to fall."

"You see? I'm doing it for them. You should be grateful. After all, you love them so very, very much."

Chase closed her eyes thinking, her hands glowing slightly blue before her eyes snapped open. She remembered who she was. Her name was Chase Harkness, not the wife of Harold Saxon.

The Master came over to Chase and wrapped his arm around her. "I took Chase to Utopia. A Time Lord and his human companion. I took her to see the stars. Isn't that right, sweetheart?"

Chase forced a smile on her lips knowing she now had to play a part that she hated. "Trillions of years into the future, to the end of the universe."

"Tell him what you saw."

"Dying. Everything is dying. The whole of creation was falling apart, and I thought, there's no point. No point to anything. Not ever."

"And it's all your fault. You should have seen it, Doctor. Furnaces burning. The last of humanity screaming at the dark. All that human invention that had sustained them across the eons. It all turned inwards. They cannibalised themselves."

"We made ourselves so pretty." The sphere said.

"Regressing into children. But it didn't work. The universe was collapsing around them. My masterpiece, Doctor. A living Tardis, strong enough to hold the paradox in place, allowing the past and the future to collide in infinite majesty."

"But you're changing history. Not just Earth, the entire universe." The Doctor said gripping onto the bars of his cage.

"I'm a Time Lord. I have that right."

"But even then, why come all this way just to destroy?"

"We come backwards in time all to build a brand new empire lasting one hundred trillion years." The Sphere said.

"With me as their master. Time Lord and humans combined. Haven't you always dreamt of that, Doctor? Human race, greatest monsters of them all. Night, then." The Master led Chase out of the room. He led her to their sleeping chambers. "Get dressed in something beautiful. Tonight we celebrate my dear wife." He said kissing her on the lips in a heated kiss.

Chase slowly pulled back, biting her lower lip softly. She slowly went to the closet where her things were. She took a soft breath, closing her eyes. She couldn't help but wonder what the Master was doing to her brother, Jack and what happened to Martha.

DWDWDW

The Master and Chase walked accompanied by armed guards and spheres.

"Martha. Martha Jones. I can see you! Out you come, little girl. Come and meet your master. Anybody? Nobody? No? Nothing? Positions. I'll give the order unless you surrender. Ask yourself. What would the Doctor do?"

Chase watched Martha come out of the slave quarters.

"Oh, yes. Oh, very well done. Good girl. He trained you well. Bag. Give me the bag. No, stay there. Just throw it."

Martha threw her backpack towards the Master, who fired his laser screwdriver at it.

"And now, good companion, your work is done." The Master pointed his laser at Martha.

Suddenly a man ran out of the house. "No!"

Chase let out a soft gasp as she watched him kill the poor man.

The Master laughed. "But you, when you die, the Doctor should be a witness, hmm? Almost dawn, Martha, and planet Earth marches to war."

DWDWDW

"Citizens of Earth, rejoice and observe."

Some guards brough Martha in, her mother, father, and sister were already there on one side and Jack was on the other.

"Your teleport device, in case you thought I'd forgotten."

Martha threw the vortex manipulator to the Master.

"And now, kneel. Down below, the fleet is ready to launch. Two hundred thousand ships set to burn across the universe. Are we ready? Three minutes to align the black hole converters. Counting down. I never could resist a ticking clock. My children, are you ready?"

"We will fly and blaze and slice. We will fly and blaze and slice." The spheres said up in the air.

"At zero, to mark this day, the child Martha Jones, will die. My first blood. Any last words? No? Such a disappointment, this one. Days of old, Doctor, you had companions who could absorb the time vortex. This one's useless. Bow your head. And so it falls to me, as Master of all, to establish from this day, a new order of Time Lords. From this day forward…"

Martha laughed quietly.

"What. What's so funny?"

"A gun."

"What about it?"

"A gun in four parts?"

"Yes, and I destroyed it."

"A gun in four parts scattered across the world? I mean, come on, did you really believe that?"

"What do you mean?"

"As if I would ask her to kill." The Doctor said, looking up at the Master.

"Oh well, it doesn't matter. I've got her exactly where I want her."

"But I knew what Professor Docherty would do. The Resistance knew about her son. I told her about the gun, so she'd get me here at the right time." Martha said as she looked at the Master.

"Oh, but you're still going to die."

"Don't you want to know what I was doing, travelling the world?"

"Tell me."

"I told a story, that's all. No weapons, just words. I did just what the Doctor said. I went across the continents all on my own. And everywhere I went, I found the people, and I told them my story. I told them about the Doctor. And I told them to pass it on, to spread the word so that everyone would know about the Doctor."

"Faith and hope? Is that all?"

"No, because I gave them instructions, just as the Doctor said." Martha got up to her feet. "I told them that if everyone thinks of one word, at one specific time."

"Nothing will happen. Is that your weapon? Prayer?"

Chase looked over at Martha and saw the worried look on her face. Chase winked at Martha alerting her that she was alright.

"Right across the world, in word, just one thought at one moment but with fifteen satellites."

"What?"

"The Archangel Network."

"A telepathic field binding the whole human race together, with all of them, every single person on Earth, thinking the same thing at the same time. And that word is Doctor."

The timer hit zero and the Doctor and his cage started to glow.

"Stop it. No, no, no, no, you don't."

"Doctor. Doctor." Jack began to say.

"Doctor." Francine said.

"Don't."

"Doctor. Doctor. Doctor." The Crowd said over the monitor.

"Stop this right now. Stop it!"

"Doctor." Chase said, finally voicing herself.

"Doctor." Jack said again.

"Doctor." Martha said with a smile.

"Doctor." The crowd said again.

The Doctor went back to his previous form. "I've had a whole year to tune myself into the psychic network and integrate with its matrices."

"I order you to stop!"

"Doctor. Doctor. Doctor. Doctor." The crowd continued.

"Doctor." Chase said again, moving closer to where Jack was, her hands glowing.

"The one thing you can't do. Stop them thinking." The Doctor said finally in his normal appearance. "Tell me the human race is degenerate now, when they can do this."

Martha ran up to her mother and sister for a group hug.

"No!" The Master yelled firing his laser screwdriver at the Doctor, but an energy field is still around him and doesn't break though.

"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

"Then I'll kill them."

The Doctor stretched his hand out and the screwdriver flew from his hand.

"You can't do this. You can't do it. It's not fair!"

"And you know what happens now."

"No! No! No! No!"

The Doctor floated towards the Master. "You wouldn't listen."

"No!"

"Because you know what I'm going to say."

"No." The Master curled up into a ball in the corner.

The Doctor put his arms around him. "I forgive you."

"My children."

"Protect the paradox. Protect the paradox. Protect the paradox." The spheres said.

"Captain, the paradox machine!"

"You men, with me! You stay here." Jack said as he moved quickly.

The Doctor spotted the Master activating the manipulator and grabbing it. "No!"

They vanished from the quarry.

"We've all six billion spheres heading right for us."

Chase's hands glowed a bright blue. "I'm back to myself, meaning I'm going to fight… they won't get far." She looked over her shoulder at Jack who was running. "JACK!"

Jack turned his head looking at Chase.

"You be careful you hear me?"

Jack winked as he went to find the Tardis.

Chase closed her eyes hoping that Jack was able to do what he needed to do without getting himself killed even though she knew that he wouldn't die, she was still worried. After everything that they had been through they still acted like siblings and the two of them needed one another.

The spheres suddenly disappeared as the ship shook. Papers flew everywhere.

Martha was thrown into the Doctor's arms.

"Everyone get down! Time is reversing!" The Doctor shouted.

Chase quickly put a blue barrier around them protecting them.

The Master hung onto some of the railings.

Francine saw a pistol on the floor.

Meanwhile the winds of time were creating havoc and panic on the ground, until finally the people, the rockets, and the statues disappeared. Calm returns and a red bus drives around Piccadilly Circus.

The Doctor took a breath as Chase lowered the blue force field. "The paradox is broken. We've reverted back, one year and one day. Two minutes past eight in the morning."

"This is UNIT Central. What's happened up there? We just saw the President assassinated." A man's voice rang out over the com.

"Just after the President was killed, but just before the spheres arrived. Everything is back to normal. Planet Earth restored. None of it happened. The rockets, the terror. It never was." The Doctor explained.

"What about the spheres?" Martha questioned as she looked at the Doctor, her brows furrowed in confusion.

"Trapped at the end of the universe."

"But I can remember it." Francine said blinking a few times.

"We're at the eye of the storm. The only ones who'll ever know. Oh, hello. You must be Mister Jones. We haven't actually met." The Doctor said with a smile.

The Master took a run for the door just as Jack came in.

"Whoa, big fella! You don't want to miss the party. Cuffs. So, what do we do with this one?" Jack said, stopping The Master right in his tracks.

"We kill him." Clive said.

"We execute him." Tish replied.

"No, that's not the solution." The Doctor said, shaking his head.

Francine aimed the pistol at the Master. "Oh, I think so. Because of all those things, they still happened because of him. I saw them."

"Go on. Do it." The Master said with a scoff.

"Francine, you're better than him." The Doctor said as he got Francine to lower the gun and he hugged her, then handed her off to Martha.

"You still haven't answered the question. What happened to me?"

"You're my responsibility from now on. The only Time Lord left in existence."

"Yeah, but you can't trust him." Jack said, looking at the Doctor.

"Jack has a point." Chase said softly.

"The only safe place for him is the Tardis."

"You mean you're just going to keep me?"

"Mmm. If that's what I have to do. It's time to change. Maybe I've been wandering for too long. Now I've got someone to care for."

Chase suddenly blasted the Master with her magic.

The Doctor caught him as he staggered back.

"Chase!"

"There you go. I've got you. I've got you." The Doctor said softly looking up at Chase seeing the look on her face. It was haunted and scared, he finally understood why she had blasted him.

"Always the women." The Master said weakly.

"I didn't see her. Not fast enough."

"Dying in your arms. Happy now?"

"You're not dying. Don't be stupid. It's only a bullet. Just regenerate."

"No."

"One little blast. Come on."

"I guess you don't know me so well. I refuse."

"Regenerate. Just regenerate. Please. Please! Just regenerate. Come on."

"And spend the rest of my life imprisoned with you?"

"You've got to. Come on. It can't end like this. You and me, all the things we've done. Axons. Remember the Axons? And the Daleks. We're the only two left. There's no one else. Regenerate!"

"How about that? I win. Will it stop, Doctor? The drumming. Will it stop?" The Master suddenly died in his arms.

"No!"

Chase looked at the Doctor as a few tears slid down her cheeks.

DWDWDW

Chase stood with the Doctor, Jack and Martha at Roald Dahl Plass.

"Time was, every single one of these people knew your name. Now they've all forgotten you." Martha said softly, shaking her head.

"Good."

"Back to work." Jack said as he wrapped his arm around Chase.

"I really don't mind, though. Come with me." The Doctor said, looking at the two of them.

"I had plenty of time to think about the past year, the year that never was, and I kept thinking about that team of mine. Like you said, Doctor, responsibility."

"Defending the Earth. Can't argue with that." The Doctor took Jack's hand and exposed the vortex manipulator on his wrist.

"Hey, I need that."

Chase simply shook her head lightly. "That thing… it's a death trap and you know that."

"I can't have you walking around with a time travelling teleporter. You could go anywhere, twice. The second time to apologise." The Doctor said as he sonic the manipulator.

"And what about me? Can you fix that? Will I ever be able to die?"

"Nothing I can do. You're an impossible thing, Jack."

"Been called that before. Sir. Ma'am. But I keep wondering. What about aging? Because I can't die but I keep getting older. The odd little grey hair, you know? What happens if I live for a million years?"

Chase let out a soft chuckle.

"I really don't know."

"Okay, vanity. Sorry. Yeah, I can't help it. Used to be a poster boy when I was a kid living on the Boeshane Peninsula. Tiny little place. I was the first one ever to be signed up for the Time Agency. They were so proud of me. The Face of Boe, they called me. Hmm. I'll see you." Jack said as turned. He looked at Chase. "You coming sis?"

Chase looked at Jack. "Give me a moment please Jack?"

Jack nodded his head and walked toward Torchwood's secret entrance.

"No." The Doctor said thinking.

"It can't be." Martha said, looking at the Doctor.

"No. Definitely not. No. No." The Doctor then looked at Chase. "You look troubled."

Chase nodded her head weakly. "Can I ride with you? Before you go on your next adventure?"

The Doctor nodded his head.

DWDWDW

The Doctor stood with Chase watching Francine, Martha, Clive and Tish inside the house from across the street where the Tardis is parked before they both went inside.

The Doctor looked over at her. "You're troubled with the choice you made…"

"When he took me from the end of everything… bringing me here…" Chase looked down, pursing her lips together. "He screwed with my mind in so many ways… I was brainwashed to be his wife… to do things that I would never do…"

The Doctor put his hand on her shoulder. "You were tortured… more than you care to admit Chase…"

"That's my name here… my name is really…" She took a sharp breath looking up at him.

The Doctor's brows furrowed as he looked at her.

"Samara… My name is Samara. Chase is the name that Jack gave me…"

"You're…"

"I'm the last of my kind, yes, and a healer, and someone who used to travel with you a few times…"

The Doctor suddenly pulled her into a hug. "How did I not know it was you? How did I not know that you were alive Samara…"

Chase's cheeks flushed in embarrassment.

The Doctor then pulled away as Martha came into the Tardis.

"Right then, off we go. The open road. There is a burst of starfire right now over the coast of Meta Sigma Folio. Oh, the sky is like oil on water. Fancy a look? Or back in time. We could, I don't know, Charles the Second? Henry the Eighth. I know. What about Agatha Christie? I'd love to meet Agatha Christie. I bet she's brilliant. Okay."

"I just can't." Martha said, shaking her head.

"Yeah."

"Spent all these years training to be a doctor. Now I've got people to look after. They saw half the planet slaughtered and they're devastated. I can't leave them."

"Of course not. Thank you. Martha Jones, you saved the world."

"Yes, I did. I spent a lot of time with you thinking I was second best, but you know what? I am good. You going to be alright?"

"Always. Yeah."

"Right then. Bye." Martha then turned to leave, then came back inside of the Tardis. "Because the thing is, it's like my friend Vicky. She lived with this bloke, student housing, there were five of them all packed in, and this bloke was called Sean. And she loved him. She did. She completely adored him. Spent all day long talking about him."

"Is this going anywhere?"

"Yes. Because he never looked at her twice. I mean, he liked her, but that was it. And she wasted years pining after him. Years of her life. Because while he was around, she never looked at anyone else. And I told her, I always said to her, time and time again, I said, get out. So this is me, getting out." She threw her mobile phone to him. "Keep that, because I'm not having you disappear. If that rings, when that rings, you'd better come running. Got it?"

"Got it."

"I'll see you again, mister."

"Martha." Chase said softly.

Martha stopped to look at Chase. "Chase?"

"Can…" She swallowed the lump as she moved closer to the Doctor. "Can you tell Jack I'll be back soon…"

Martha looked at Chase, her brows furrowed.

"I need to find answers… he'll understand."

Martha nodded her head. "I can do that. See you Chase."

Chase smiled softly watching Martha leave.

The Doctor looked at Chase. "Are you sure you want to go with me?"

Chase looked up into the Doctor's eyes and put her hand on his shoulder. "Yes."

The Doctor nodded his head and pressed some buttons to get the Tardis going.

Chase took a soft breath as she heard the sound of the Tardis dematerialising.

Suddenly there was a sound of a ship's foghorn, a bow of a ship smashed through the side of the Tardis causing Chase to fall into the Doctor.

"What. What?" He held Chase to him before he reached down and picked up a lifebelt with the name of Titanic on it.

Chase's eyes went wide.

"What?"
